In Episode 160, Catherine (@GilmoreGuide) and I share the best backlist books we read in 2023. We each discuss our top 5 backlist books from last year, highlight some underrated backlist gems, and review our backlist reading statistics. Devoting an entire episode to backlist reading is something we love doing and we've heard from you that you love it too! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). CLICK HERE for the full episode Show Notes on the blog. Announcement Available Now! To get the backlist reading guide, The Best of the Backlist, you can sign up to be a Superstars patron here. You'll also get access to a monthly bonus podcast series called Double Booked (where Catherine or Susie and I share our own book recommendations in the same format as the big show) and my Rock Your Reading Tracker. Highlights Catherine had a small uptick in her backlist reading — her most successful segment of books in 2023! Sarah's backlist reading was slightly less successful than last year — maybe marking an unfortunate trend. How Sarah's decreased DNFs for last year impacted her Backlist stats. While Catherine has already read many of Sarah's picks, Sarah has already purchased (but not yet read) many of Catherine's choices! In Episode 30, Deb and Amy from the Bless Your Heart Book Club join me to talk Southern literature…and obviously a heavy dose of Pat Conroy!  This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Our extensive thoughts on Pat Conroy. Our first memories of loving Southern literature. Deb and I’s differing opinions of overwrought, intricate writing. Our favorite types of Southern lit. A couple of our favorite Southern books that aren’t by Pat Conroy. Deb’s love for William Faulkner. How it feels to read and review a friend’s book. A real life precursor to the book mobile. ''One of the best writers of her generation'' (Atlanta Journal Constitution), she currently teaches writing in Rutgers University's MFA program. Her new novel follows a husband and wife who seem to embody the new South but are unmoored by false accusation and imprisonment.   Stephanie Powell Watts is the author of the 2017 novel No One Is Coming to Save Us, a Great Gatsby-esque tale of African Americans in Jim Crow North Carolina, which presents ''an important, largely missing part of our ongoing American story'' (Chicago Review of Books). In 2017, No One is Coming to Save Us was chosen by Sarah Jessica Parker as an inaugural pick for the American Library Association's Book Club Central, and in 2018 the novel earned Ms. Watts the NAACP Image Award in the category of Debut Author. Her story collection We Are Taking Only What We Need was a PEN/Hemingway finalist, and one of O: The Oprah Magazine's 2013 Best Summer Reads. In what is now a yearly tradition, EPISODE #61 of Random Old Records is a special 5/10/15/20 edition. For a little over an hour, I jump into the time machine and travel back to 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 to take a look around and sample the top jams of those particular years! This time, I start off in 1997 with the stone-cold classic title track from Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out LP. Then, you'll hear a selection of 97's finest pop-punk and emo from the Get Up Kids and Promise Ring. Zipping right along to 2002, there's ripping punk from the Buff Medways and Idlewild, then a jump into 2007 for some rough and raw garage rock from The Ponys, Willowz, and Blitzen Trapper, before ending up in 2012 with Best Coast and Gentleman Jesse. Her first novel, Leaving Atlanta, is a coming of age story set during the city's infamous child murders of 1979-81. Jones herself was in the fifth grade when thirty African American children were murdered from the neighborhoods near her home and school.  Leaving Atlanta received many awards and accolades including the Hurston/Wright Award for Debut Fiction. It was named “Novel of the Year” by Atlanta Magazine, “Best Southern Novel of the Year,” by Creative Loafing Atlanta. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Washington Post both listed it as one of the best of 2002. She has received fellowships from organizations including Illinois Arts Council, Bread Loaf Writers Conference, The Corporation of Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, Arizona Commission on the Arts and Le Chateau de Lavigny.  Her second novel, The Untelling, published in 2005, is the story of a family struggling to overcome the aftermath of a fatal car accident.  Upon the publication of The Untelling, Essence magazine called Jones, "a writer to watch." In 2005, The Southern Regional council and the University of Georgia Libraries awarded The Untelling with the Lillian C. Smith Award for New Voices. Tayari Jones is a graduate of Spelman College, The University of Iowa, and Arizona State University. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor in the MFA program at Rutgers-Newark University. Silver Sparrow is her third novel. Set in a middle-class neighborhood in Atlanta in the 1980s, the novel revolves around James Witherspoon's two families—the public one and the secret one.
