On February 1, 1922, William Desmond Taylor, one of Hollywood's most successful directors was found dead in his home with a bullet in his back. The list of suspects was as long as the line outside one of his premieres, and the search for the killer would take investigators across the country and into the underbelly of downtown Los Angeles tracking down clues. As the case unfolded, famous names like Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, and Mack Sennett would be dragged through the mud. The press published torrid love letters, exposed scandalous affairs, and filed incendiary reports on the drug problem on Hollywood sets. But the bigger questions remained — how much did the studios know about the murder, and why were they covering up evidence? After leaving home at the age of 14, Dressler built a career on stage in traveling theatre troupes, where she learned to appreciate her talent in making people laugh. In 1892, she started a career on Broadway that lasted into the 1920s, performing comedic roles that allowed her to improvise to get laughs. She soon transitioned into screen acting and made several shorts, but mostly worked in New York City on stage. During World War I, along with other celebrities, she helped sell Liberty bonds. In 1914, she played the title role in the first full-length screen comedy, Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914), opposite Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand. In 1919, she helped organize the first union for stage chorus players. Her career declined in the 1920s, and Dressler was reduced to living on her savings while sharing an apartment with a friend. In 1927, she returned to films at the age of 59 and experienced a remarkable string of successes. For her performance in the comedy film Min and Bill (1930), Dressler won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She died of cancer in 1934.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:20 UTC on Thursday, 7 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Marie Dressler on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Brian Standard.

On February 1, 1922, William Desmond Taylor, one of Hollywood’s most successful directors was found dead in his home with a bullet in his back. And more importantly, who would have reason to murder one of Hollywood’s most promising directors? Listen ad free with Wondery+. We discuss the heartbreaking story of Roscoe Arbuckle and why he should be remembered for his craft rather than a series of horribly unfortunate events. --------------------------------------------- Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle mentored Charlie Chaplin, introduced the world to Bob Hope and Buster Keaton, and for a time, was the most popular comedian in Hollywood. Due to a scandal that unfairly affected his reputation, Arbuckle's contributions to screen comedy have been largely ignored. Thankfully, since the 1970s, historians have begun to set the record straight and audiences have given a second look to this founding father of movie comedy. As part of the Silents at the Senate series, CineMuseum LLC and the Detroit Theater Organ Society proudly presents FATTY ARBUCKLE AND FRIENDS. Join us for a collection of six hilarious silent shorts, accompanied by Andrew Rogers on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ: Peeping Pete (1913) The Rounders (1914) The Waiters' Ball (1916) Fatty and Mabel Adrift (1916) Coney Island (1917) Love (1919) Sat. As an added treat, Producer, Director, and co-founder of Cinemuseum LLC, Paul Gierucki will be displaying memorabilia and items personally owned by Roscoe Arbuckle! Flatpack's Silent Night series continues with a screening, at Birmingham Cathedral, of The Marvellous Mabel Normand, a programme of four silent comedy shorts from the BFI National Archive. Normand was the leading silent comedienne of her day but neither Mike nor José was familiar with her, and the programme provides a great introduction to her work, as not just a star but also a director. We saw Mabel's Blunder (1914), which she directed, Mabel's Dramatic Career (1913), His Trysting Place (1914) and Should Men Walk Home? (1927). Each stars Normand, and alongside her are such names as Mack Sennett, Oliver Hardy, Eugene Pallette and one Charlie Chaplin. José finds himself in thrall to Normand's magnetism and emotional openness, finding her incandescent with screen presence. The nuances she brings to her physical and facial performances, the way she types or jumps out of the way of an onrushing car, light up the screen and make her memorable. Mike, it must be said, is less impressed, suggesting that she doesn't elevate some weak material as a better actor might, though that's not to say he sees nothing to appreciate about her performances. But what he takes away above all else is how seeing one Chaplin film amongst other silent shorts provides incontrovertible proof of his comedic genius, His Trysting Place a geyser of creativity and comic charm. We also consider how key figures of silent comedy are remembered or not, particularly thinking of the disparity between Mack Sennett's importance and name recognition, and how Chaplin remains a worldwide icon perhaps to an extent comparable only to religious figures. José holds forth on the talents and career of Leo McCarey, director of Should Men Walk Home?, and we discuss the programme's newly commissioned score by The Meg Morley Trio, who performed it live during the screening. Recorded on 8th December 2018.

Matron Helen Lawes wants your pictures and stories and she’s got some interesting tales to share before a big community event! (00:32) Shaftesbury Arts Centre’s summer musical is 'Mack and Mabel'. The show, which runs until 21st July, tells the story of the early 20th-century film director Mack Sennett and his relationship with the actress Mabel Normand. Sennett was the silent moviemaker who found industry success making the Keystone Cops and Bathing Beauties films. Alfred went to meet some of the cast and watch this big production. (06:45) For Paul Eaton and Helen Caines, moving to Shaftesbury is their dream come true. The couple will have a home that they can call their own for the first time in their relationship. The Tamar Housing Association has offered 12 properties for rent at Chilmark Glade, through the Rent Plus initiative. Under this scheme, tenants have the chance to buy their homes once they have lived in the property for 5 years. If they choose to buy, the tenants will be gifted a sizeable cash deposit to help their purchase. Alfred attended the launch of this scheme in Shaftesbury. (14:21) Shaftesbury Town Council hopes to tackle speeding motorists. They’ve bought a mobile speed indicator sign, following complaints from Grosvenor Road residents. Mayor, Piers Brown, wants to know where else the sign could be deployed. (20:26) Shaftesbury Town Council should hire an expert commercial negotiator to secure cash for community projects from supermarkets that wish to operate here. Alfred speaks to Councillor Andy Perkins, who made this suggestion. (23:14) Shaftesbury has a new dental practice. Alfred met Eve and Geoff, the couple behind the business. They have installed specialist medical equipment, which can take 3D X-ray images of the skull, head and neck. It could save medical patients long journeys for scans in Poole or Salisbury. Eve used to work in dental care in Germany and you might be surprised at how different visiting the dentist is there. (28:05) Have you found something unusual in your garden? William Desmond Taylor was a big deal. A director in the pre-talkie era of Hollywood, Taylor was a giant in the film industry. He worked with the likes of the greats of that time: Mabel Normand, Mary Pickford, Jack Pickford, Wallace Reed, and Douglas MacLean.  In February of 1922, the houseman found William Desmond Taylor murdered. He had been shot to death, and the resulting furor over his passing went well beyond the tabloids of the era. In context, the murder of William Desmond Taylor was yet another bargaining chip for the growing moral majority of the time period to argue against films as a valid form of creative expression directed at the youth of America. See, Hollywood -- Tinseltown, as it was widely known -- was not the innocent place one might imagine. There were plenty of scandals, even back in the Roaring Twenties. Not only did you have the death of William Desmond Taylor, but there was also the Fatty Arbuckle rape trial to contend with. Stars were going to secret rehabs to dry out of their cocaine addictions. People were ODing and ending up cast aside.  It was a wild time. And William Desmond Taylor's murder was at the center of it all. To make matters worse, the crime was never officially solved, so this podcast episode is all to do with the unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor. However, there's a twist to this story that I would rather not spoil for the casual listener. It's the thing that makes this particular Hollywood murder something of an anomaly, and it's almost fit to be put on screen. The William Desmond Taylor book from which I've drawn most of my research is, of course, William J. Mann's 'Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine, and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood.' It is a fantastically-researched book, on par, in my opinion, with Erik Larson's 'Devil in the White City.'

Mabel and Me (Angel City Press) Join us tonight for a very special event from local publisher and friend of the store, Angel City Press. Mabel and Me is a novel about the Movies—a sharply observed, historically accurate, deliciously intimate story set in the earliest days of motion pictures. Beautifully told, this is a tale of Jack, his coming of age with the Movies, and his passionate, destructive, and ultimately liberating love for one of the very first movie stars, the sweetheart of slapstick—Mabel Normand. Theirs is the story of the birth of the modern movie age. It's a story they lived together. Day in, day out. Until they didn't. Mabel Normand was the model for the modern woman: her brief life, from slapstick girl to boxoffice bonanza to drug addict to modern savvy star, embodied the evolution of the Movies. She was the Queen of Comedy, a flapper a decade before flappers, the first to have her name emblazoned in the title of a picture, the first director of Charlie Chaplin's tramp—not to mention the person who convinced Mack Sennett to give Chaplin his first break, immediately recognizing his comic genius. Mabel was the first woman allowed to be both beautiful and funny, the model for the modern comedic star, and she was shockingly sexy at the time. Watching Mabel on screen was like “being slapped in the face with a perfumed glove.” Author Jon Boorstin portrays her love affairs—all factbased, particularly her defining, explosive relationship with Mack Sennett—with humor, poignancy, and drama. Mabel and Me takes us directly inside the world of the birth of the Movies, inside the world of Hollywood 1912. We become obsessed with motion pictures, in love with their mesmerizing power. Entertaining, heartfelt, and unexpected, Boorstin's novel delivers us to the first moments of filmmaking and recreates the sense of all that was happening on film and behind the scenes for the very first time. Written in a voice that's side by side with Hollywood's premier female movie star, one that's close to her, and from a perspective that's often privy to what Normand is thinking—even when she starred with Chaplin in the first featurelength comedy ever made. Jon Boorstin's first novel, Pay or Play, was called “the definitive send up of Hollywood” by Publishers Weekly in a coveted starred review. His second, The Newsboys' Lodging-House, won the New York Society Library Award for Historical Fiction. Boorstin has also written a book of practical film theory, Making Movies Work, which is used in film schools all over the world. The work of an Oscar®nominated documentary filmmaker and longtime screenwriter and producer, Mabel and Me is the culmination of Boorstin's lifelong affair with the Movies.
