On February 1, 1922, William Desmond Taylor, one of Hollywood's most successful directors was found dead in his home with a bullet in his back. The list of suspects was as long as the line outside one of his premieres, and the search for the killer would take investigators across the country and into the underbelly of downtown Los Angeles tracking down clues. As the case unfolded, famous names like Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, and Mack Sennett would be dragged through the mud. The press published torrid love letters, exposed scandalous affairs, and filed incendiary reports on the drug problem on Hollywood sets. But the bigger questions remained — how much did the studios know about the murder, and why were they covering up evidence? And more importantly, who would have reason to murder one of Hollywood's most promising directors? As of posting time, SAG/AFTRA (actors) and WGA (writers) were still on strike. Our guest Hawk Koch has been through a few strikes in his six decades in the entertainment industry, on both sides of the table. The studios have their offer on the table, so do the writers and actors, and talks continue. Hawk has been heartened by the Barbenheimer phenomenon with people returning to the theaters after the isolation of the pandemic. A key issue is the strange new world of streaming services, where no one knows how many people are seeing the shows, or how much revenue they are generating, thanks to the opaque nature of big tech companies like Netflix, Max, Amazon and Apple. Hawk has produced more than 60 films (from Wayne's World to Chinatown) and was head of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. He is the one half of the only father-son duo to head the Academy (Howard Koch Sr.) When he was head of the Producers Guild of America, he worked with partner Mark Gordon to professionalize the craft and instituted the Producers Mark. Koch serves on the board of directors for AMC Entertainment, the Motion Picture and Television Fund, the Producers Guild of America, and the National Film Preservation Foundation. He lives with wife Molly in Ojai but still keeps himself busy with new projects. We talked about the accelerating rate of change in the business, and whether the studios and creative talents are worried about each other, when the looming threat of Big Tech threatens their entire way of life, through Artificial Generated Intelligence and their general disregard and lack of love for the magic of films. Hawk is a return guest from 2020 when he published "Magic Time," his memoir about growing up on movie sets and his distinguished career. We did not talk about Mack Sennett, the Lumiére Brothers or magic lantern shows.

00h 00’00” Just go to the movies – Michael Feinstein & Jerry Herman 00h 03’30” Presentación 00h 05’02” Cabecera 00h 06’09” Inicio 00h 06’30” Overture 00h 12’02” Movies were movies 00h 15’54” Look what happened to Mabel 00h 19’98” Big time 00h 23’21” I won’t send roses 00h 26’49” I won’t send roses (Reprise) 00h 29’28” I wanna make the world laugh 00h 32’46” Wherever he ain’t 00h 36’37” Hundreds of girls 00h 40’14” Entr’acte 00h 43’56” When Mabel comes in the room 00h 50’11” My heart leaps up 00h 53’26” Time heals everything 00h 57’33” Tap your troubles away 01h 01’21” I promise you a happy ending 01h 04’09” Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 06’35” Hit ‘em on the head 01h 12’15” Tap your troubles away – Anna-Jane Casey

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that famed early film producer, Thomas Ince, was born in Rhode Island in 1880? He was prolific silent film producer, director, screenwriter, and actor. Ince was known as the "Father of the Western" and was responsible for making over 800 films. He revolutionized the motion picture industry by creating the first major Hollywood studio facility and invented movie production by introducing the "assembly line" system of filmmaking. He was the first mogul to build his own film studio dubbed "Inceville" in Palisades Highlands and was instrumental in developing the role of the producer in motion pictures. Two of his films, The Italian (1915), for which he wrote the screenplay, and Civilization (1916), which he directed, were selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. He later entered into a partnership with D. W. Griffith and Mack Sennett to form the Triangle Motion Picture Company, whose studios are the present-day site of Sony Pictures. He then built a new studio about a mile from Triangle, which is now the site of Culver Studios. Ince's untimely death at the height of his career at age 44, after he became severely ill aboard the private yacht of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst, has caused much speculation…. although the official cause of his death was heart failure. Now, for our feature story: North Kingston has unveiled a memorial to residents that died from COVID-19. A public unveiling of the memorial was held Saturday evening outside the Old Meeting House and included music, candlelight and remarks from local residents. The Providence Journal reported artist Nancy Rafi and community volunteers created the display of white flags staked into the ground to honor the more than 80 residents that have died in the town of roughly 26,000. Some of the flags include the names of the victims, as well as the date they died, a photograph and some words of remembrance. Rafi told the newspaper that the display will be up for several months and that volunteers will continue to make additional flags as needed. The North Kingstown Arts Council provided a $1,500 grant for the effort but organizers are also allowing anyone to sponsor a flag. And in Connecticut, Hartford's Puerto Rican Day parade returned to city streets Saturday for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic started, with colorful floats winding their way through neighborhoods. People on the floats and in vehicles in the caravan waved the red, white and blue flags of Puerto Rico and played music as hundreds of onlookers cheered and displayed their own flags. This year's procession was smaller than in previous years. Last year's parade was canceled because of the pandemic. Saturday's event also honored health care workers, first responders and other essential personnel for their work during the pandemic. Parade watcher Juliany Polar said the parade had the atmosphere of a neighborhood party. “People are happy,” Polar told the Hartford Courant. “People are ready to get out and about and enjoy the better weather, the better rates against COVID.” For more information on all things Westerly, check out this story and more at thewesterlysun.com Are you interested in a new opportunity? On February 1, 1922, William Desmond Taylor, one of Hollywood’s most successful directors was found dead in his home with a bullet in his back. And more importantly, who would have reason to murder one of Hollywood’s most promising directors? Listen ad free with Wondery+.

Flatpack's Silent Night series continues with a screening, at Birmingham Cathedral, of The Marvellous Mabel Normand, a programme of four silent comedy shorts from the BFI National Archive. Normand was the leading silent comedienne of her day but neither Mike nor José was familiar with her, and the programme provides a great introduction to her work, as not just a star but also a director. We saw Mabel's Blunder (1914), which she directed, Mabel's Dramatic Career (1913), His Trysting Place (1914) and Should Men Walk Home? (1927). Each stars Normand, and alongside her are such names as Mack Sennett, Oliver Hardy, Eugene Pallette and one Charlie Chaplin. José finds himself in thrall to Normand's magnetism and emotional openness, finding her incandescent with screen presence. The nuances she brings to her physical and facial performances, the way she types or jumps out of the way of an onrushing car, light up the screen and make her memorable. Mike, it must be said, is less impressed, suggesting that she doesn't elevate some weak material as a better actor might, though that's not to say he sees nothing to appreciate about her performances. But what he takes away above all else is how seeing one Chaplin film amongst other silent shorts provides incontrovertible proof of his comedic genius, His Trysting Place a geyser of creativity and comic charm. We also consider how key figures of silent comedy are remembered or not, particularly thinking of the disparity between Mack Sennett's importance and name recognition, and how Chaplin remains a worldwide icon perhaps to an extent comparable only to religious figures. José holds forth on the talents and career of Leo McCarey, director of Should Men Walk Home?, and we discuss the programme's newly commissioned score by The Meg Morley Trio, who performed it live during the screening. Recorded on 8th December 2018.

This time on Alfred, the podcast for Shaftesbury, The Vale and Chase areas of North Dorset and West Wiltshire: Alfred hears about plans to celebrate 70 years of the NHS in Shaftesbury and 30 years of the Westminster Memorial Hospital League of Friends. Matron Helen Lawes wants your pictures and stories and she’s got some interesting tales to share before a big community event! (00:32) Shaftesbury Arts Centre’s summer musical is 'Mack and Mabel'. The show, which runs until 21st July, tells the story of the early 20th-century film director Mack Sennett and his relationship with the actress Mabel Normand. Sennett was the silent moviemaker who found industry success making the Keystone Cops and Bathing Beauties films. Alfred went to meet some of the cast and watch this big production. (06:45) For Paul Eaton and Helen Caines, moving to Shaftesbury is their dream come true. The couple will have a home that they can call their own for the first time in their relationship. The Tamar Housing Association has offered 12 properties for rent at Chilmark Glade, through the Rent Plus initiative. Under this scheme, tenants have the chance to buy their homes once they have lived in the property for 5 years. If they choose to buy, the tenants will be gifted a sizeable cash deposit to help their purchase. Alfred attended the launch of this scheme in Shaftesbury. (14:21) Shaftesbury Town Council hopes to tackle speeding motorists. They’ve bought a mobile speed indicator sign, following complaints from Grosvenor Road residents. Mayor, Piers Brown, wants to know where else the sign could be deployed. (20:26) Shaftesbury Town Council should hire an expert commercial negotiator to secure cash for community projects from supermarkets that wish to operate here. Alfred speaks to Councillor Andy Perkins, who made this suggestion. (23:14) Shaftesbury has a new dental practice. Alfred met Eve and Geoff, the couple behind the business. They have installed specialist medical equipment, which can take 3D X-ray images of the skull, head and neck. It could save medical patients long journeys for scans in Poole or Salisbury. Eve used to work in dental care in Germany and you might be surprised at how different visiting the dentist is there. (28:05) Have you found something unusual in your garden? Take it to Gold Hill Museum on Saturday 14thof July between 10.30am and 1pm. An expert will offer an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ style identification of your mystery object. We talk with Claire Ryley from the museum. (31.35)

It closed after 66 performances and 6 previews. My guest Leland Masek and I talk about how a sad, sad ending it a total bummer of a way to end a fun musical.

It was a daytime audience participation show with variety acts and a 25-piece house orchestra.  While still a teenager he was the weekly guest with radio personality Jim Hawthorne on a CBS radio program that featured milt's old records and commentary by CBS founder Andrew White. His weekend national radio shows recorded in his studio on the premises of the Magic Castle in Hollywood.  His facilities house his huge record collection and his studio is designed specifically to play the old 78-RPM vintage recordings.   His studio console turntables were originally installed at the NBC Radio City studios at Sunset and Vice in Hollywood.    The shows are recorded using the newest state of the art MAC computer technology which includes to ability to clean up the snap, crackles and pops associated with the old records. The concept of the show is that younger generations have never heard samples of the great performers of the past.  Like an old joke, if you never heard it before --- it's brand new with that in mind he leads you down the path to discovery.   He introduces young people of today to a time of laughter and silly songs mixed in with some of the greatest music of all time.   Oscar winning songwriter Richard M. Sherman (The Sherman Brothers – Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, It's a small World After All etc) is a guest on every show talking about the great songwriters of Tin Pan Alley.  His other guest is a character known as Professor Hockmann, the world's oldest magician and vaudevillian who always plays just one of those really old acoustical records from Milt's collection.

Mabel and Me (Angel City Press) Join us tonight for a very special event from local publisher and friend of the store, Angel City Press. Mabel and Me is a novel about the Movies—a sharply observed, historically accurate, deliciously intimate story set in the earliest days of motion pictures. Beautifully told, this is a tale of Jack, his coming of age with the Movies, and his passionate, destructive, and ultimately liberating love for one of the very first movie stars, the sweetheart of slapstick—Mabel Normand. Theirs is the story of the birth of the modern movie age. It's a story they lived together. Day in, day out. Until they didn't. Mabel Normand was the model for the modern woman: her brief life, from slapstick girl to boxoffice bonanza to drug addict to modern savvy star, embodied the evolution of the Movies. She was the Queen of Comedy, a flapper a decade before flappers, the first to have her name emblazoned in the title of a picture, the first director of Charlie Chaplin's tramp—not to mention the person who convinced Mack Sennett to give Chaplin his first break, immediately recognizing his comic genius. Mabel was the first woman allowed to be both beautiful and funny, the model for the modern comedic star, and she was shockingly sexy at the time. Watching Mabel on screen was like “being slapped in the face with a perfumed glove.” Author Jon Boorstin portrays her love affairs—all factbased, particularly her defining, explosive relationship with Mack Sennett—with humor, poignancy, and drama. Mabel and Me takes us directly inside the world of the birth of the Movies, inside the world of Hollywood 1912. We become obsessed with motion pictures, in love with their mesmerizing power. Entertaining, heartfelt, and unexpected, Boorstin's novel delivers us to the first moments of filmmaking and recreates the sense of all that was happening on film and behind the scenes for the very first time. Written in a voice that's side by side with Hollywood's premier female movie star, one that's close to her, and from a perspective that's often privy to what Normand is thinking—even when she starred with Chaplin in the first featurelength comedy ever made. Jon Boorstin's first novel, Pay or Play, was called “the definitive send up of Hollywood” by Publishers Weekly in a coveted starred review. His second, The Newsboys' Lodging-House, won the New York Society Library Award for Historical Fiction. Boorstin has also written a book of practical film theory, Making Movies Work, which is used in film schools all over the world. The work of an Oscar®nominated documentary filmmaker and longtime screenwriter and producer, Mabel and Me is the culmination of Boorstin's lifelong affair with the Movies.
