Join our conversation with veteran pro-life trainer, activist, and academic Scott Klusendorf as he walks us through some of his training he uses to prove the pro-life position. "Syllogism, syllogism, syllogism," says Scott. It's the three most important words for proving the pro-life position. A syllogism is a deductive argument with two premises. Premise 1: It is wrong to intentionally kill and innocent human being. Premise 2: Abortion intentionally kills an innocent human being. Therefore: Abortion is wrong. The argument is valid. But it's also sound, according to Scott. The premises are true, and can be defended as such. Anyone can be trained to do so. That's what Scott has given his life to. Scott talks about the LA he grew up in, what it was like back then to go to UCLA and Pierce College in the Valley (where I also taught), and ultimately to the story of what event got him initially involved in pro-life academics and activism. Scott is teaching courses on argumentation and the abortion debate for credit at Cedarville University and South Florida Bible College this summer and also a similar course on crossexamined.org For more information on how to support his work, check out https://www.lifetraininginstitute.com The Republican Professor is a pro-defending-the-pro-life podcast. Join me in a reflexive conversation with Dr. Cara Gillis on the cannons of philosophy and sociology, teaching our disciplines to working-class students of color and women kicking men's ass in sports! Dr. Cara Gillis is a philosopher who specializes in ethics, particularly in the areas of animal ethics, environmental ethics, and the problem of harm. She’s currently examining the relationship between moral psychology and motivation as it applies to biocentric and ecocentric conceptions of environmental ethics. She received a BA in philosophy from the University of Western Ontario, MAs in philosophy from Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from UC Irvine. She’s taught in the Community College, Cal State, and University of California systems and is currently a professor of philosophy at Pierce College, where she’s also the Chair of Philosophy and Sociology Department. Although born and raised in the Canadian Maritimes, she moved to southern California in the early aughts to evade the cold and pursue a “career” in road cycling. Her life motto is “How hard can it be?” It turns out some things, particularly the self-reflection and introspection necessary to be an effective educator, are very hard indeed.

In this installment of EA's Black Book Discussions join us for a conversation with Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette, President of Huston-Tillotson University-an HBCU and Dr. Eddie R. Cole, author of The Campus Color Line: College Presidents and the Struggle for Black FreedomAbout the Book:Some of America’s most pressing civil rights issues—desegregation, equal educational and employment opportunities, housing discrimination, and free speech—have been closely intertwined with higher education institutions. Although it is commonly known that college students and other activists, as well as politicians, actively participated in the fight for and against civil rights in the middle decades of the twentieth century, historical accounts have not adequately focused on the roles that the nation’s college presidents played in the debates concerning racism. Based on archival research conducted at a range of colleges and universities across the United States, The Campus Color Line sheds light on the important place of college presidents in the struggle for racial parity. The Campus Color Line illuminates how the legacy of academic leaders’ actions continues to influence the unfinished struggle for Black freedom and racial equity in education and beyond.About the author:Eddie R. Cole, Ph.D., is associate professor of higher education and organizational change at UCLA. Dr. Cole’s research focuses on college presidents’ historic role in shaping racial policies and practices both inside and outside of the educational sphere. As a scholar of higher education history, his approach in covering historical material and making connections to the current, critical context has garnered respect and praise from academics as well as intellectuals and activists beyond the academy. His finesse in using extensive, historical materials to address contemporary racial issues in higher education demonstrates the role of higher education in influencing all aspects of American life. Dr. Cole’s scholarship and public writing has also been featured in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Chronicle of Higher Education.About Dr. Pierce-Burnette:Dr. Burnette, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, joined Huston-Tillotson University as president on July 1, 2015. She served as interim President at Pierce College in Puyallup, Washington; the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Executive Assistant to the President, Vice President for Information Technology and Services, and Chief Information Officer at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio; Dean of Information Technology at Pierce College in Lakewood, Washington; and Manager of Consulting and Project Management Services at the Washington State Department of Transportation in Olympia, Washington. Colette has combined her IQ, EQ, entrepreneurial spirit, and technical knowledge to forge successful careers in engineering, information technology, and higher education. Before transitioning into higher education, Dr. Burnette worked as a Computer Analyst at The Washington Post, an Operations Support Engineer at Proctor and Gamble, Director of Information Systems at Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp., and ran her own computer consulting firm, CompuMent. The book can be purchased at:https://press.princeton.edu/.../978.../the-campus-color-line
Shermer and Prothero discuss: flat earth theories and how we know the earth is round, hollow earth theories and how we know it’s not hollow, the return of Ptolemy and an earth-centered solar system model (and how we know it’s wrong), how science deals with anomalies, fringe claims, and challenges to the orthodoxy, whether humans were in the San Diego area 130,000 years ago, how consensus is achieved in science (and the messy road to get there), from Newton to Einstein and what ultimately determines if a theory is true or not, flood myths and what causes such stories to arise in some cultures but not others, catastrophism vs. uniformitarianism in geology, the age of the earth and how geologists determined it, the myth of Atlantis and what Plato really intended with his account, biblical accounts of the world and how we should read the book as literature, not science, how science won the evolution-creation wars, science denial and how to deal with it, and the real-world consequences of denying science. Dr. Donald R. Prothero has taught geology for over 33 years as Professor of Geology at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and Lecturer in Geobiology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and currently at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA. He earned M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in geological sciences from Columbia University in 1982. He is currently the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of 33 books and over 250 scientific papers, including five leading geology textbooks and three trade books as well as edited symposium volumes and other technical works. He is on the editorial board of Skeptic magazine, and in the past has served as an associate or technical editor for Geology, Paleobiologyand Journal of Paleontology. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, the Paleontological Society, and the Linnaean Society of London, and has also received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Science Foundation. In 1991, he received the Schuchert Award of the Paleontological Society for the outstanding paleontologist under the age of 40. He has also been featured on several television documentaries, including episodes of Paleoworld (BBC), Prehistoric Monsters Revealed (History Channel), Entelodon and Hyaenodon (National Geographic Channel) and Walking with Prehistoric Beasts (BBC).

He said that the United States Government was activiely reverse-engineering an alien spacecraft in a mysterious facility called s_4 close to Groom Lake in Nevada. A Man Named “Bob” Born on January 26, 1959, Robert Scott Lazar grew up in Coral Gables, Florida. From Florida, the family moved to New York where Lazar got his first interest in science and engineering when he became neighbors with rocket designer named Eugene Gluhareff. From a young age, Lazar’s penchant for pyrotechnics and loud things that go boom were evident. His mother recalled being startled once after hearing a loud bang outside and discovered Bob had installed a rocket engine on his bike. An often-reprinted photo of young Bob in 1977 while he lived in Woodland Hills, California, shows him on that bike with a rocket engine by Gluhareff strapped on it. You can even find photos and videos of Lazar when he was younger testing his jet bike and later, showing off his jet car. In 1980, he married Carol Strong in California and the couple later moved to Los Alamos in Vegas. While there, Lazar set up his photo processing business. Around the same time, he worked on a limited contract job for Kirk-Mayer, one of the few smaller contractors who supplied personnel to the Los Alamos National Lab. The company only worked on supplying small-time personnel like fabricators, electronic technicians, and machinists. Since Lazar had some technical knowledge from studying at Pierce College, he was hired as an electronics tech by Kirk-Mayer. Several people who worked alongside him at the time described Bob as a “clever, fix-it guy.” He was regularly seen at work handling problems with computers and doing technical repairs to a point he was listed in the Los Alamos National Lab phonebook. His name showed up with the denotation “K/M” signifying he was employed by Kirk-Mayer.

And Gerald Bowman, former football player at USC and Baltimore Ravens talks about the realities of recruiters. There is a lot of wisdom in this podcast as we start the new year. Has the internet made hate more infectious? Personalized feeds and sophisticated algorithms can direct us to content and communities that reinforce our most radical ideas and worst impulses—and dare us to act on them. Humanities WA invited us to a discussion as part of their Think and Drink series, encouraging us to explore the benefits of a connected world and ask whether the internet is built for hate. In collaboration with the iSchool at the University of Washington, Humanities WA presented a panel of speakers to help us examine the proliferation of online hate. They identified how a rise in hate groups, coupled with multiple mass shootings that incubated in dark online corners, has raised urgent questions about how the web has affected the way we treat one another. From trolling to White Nationalism, explore the mechanics of online hate, the responsibilities of tech companies and governments, and what we should—and shouldn’t—do to try to stem the tide. Panelists: Anna Lauren Hoffmann is a researcher, writer, and educator working at the intersections of data, technology, culture, and ethics. She is an Assistant Professor with The iSchool at the University of Washington, whose work centers on issues in information, data, and ethics. Shankar Narayan is the Director of the Technology and Liberty Project at the ACLU of Washington. He works to bring values of fairness, transparency, and accountability to surveillance and machine learning technologies, and to lift the voices of impacted communities. Eric Davis is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Bellevue College. He has also taught Ethnic Thought and Culture at Pierce College, as well as Multicultural Communication at Cascadia Community College and Introduction to Multicultural Studies at Shoreline. Presented by Humanities Washington, the iSchool at the University of Washington, and Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Forum on October 9, 2019.

Silver Lake Chronicles: Exploring an Urban Oasis in Los Angeles (History Press) Situated between Los Feliz and Echo Park a few miles from downtown Los Angeles, Silver Lake thrives as a perennially avant-garde and enchanting enclave. From mansion builders and movie stars to bohemians, visionaries and just plain folk, discover Silver Lake's illustrious past and a fantastic cast of characters sure to enrich contemporary experience and inform the past. Colorful anecdotes about early movie magnates William Selig and Mack Sennett and silent-screen idols Mabel Normand, Antonio Moreno and Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle flesh out these famous figures' lives in new and surprising ways. Other lesser-known but richly deserving stories about the area's pioneer families are shared perhaps for the first time. Authors Michael Locke and Vincent Brook present a rich tapestry of this unique urban oasis whose appeal seems only to grow. Michael Locke is a longtime resident of Southern California. He served on the first Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, as the Region One representative and vice chair, and was founder of the Beautification Committee. Since 2003, he has edited and published The Silver Lake News, an online community newspaper. He is also a regular contributing writer and photographer for the Los Feliz Ledger, the Los Feliz Observer and the Los Angeles City Historical Society Newsletter. He lives in the Durex Model Home (Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument Number 1025) in Los Feliz with his wife, Donna Jean. Vincent Brook has a PhD in film and television from UCLA. He teaches media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Southern California; California State University, Los Angeles; and Pierce College. He has authored or edited five other books, most recently: Land of Smoke and Mirrors: A Cultural History of Los Angeles and Woody on Rye: Jewishness in the Films and Plays of Woody Allen (both 2013). Born in Van Nuys, he has lived in Silver Lake with his wife Karen since 1978.
Colin Marshall sits down in Silver Lake, Los Angeles with Vincent Brook, teacher at UCLA, USC, Cal State Los Angeles, and Pierce College, and author of books on Jewish émigré directors and the Jewish sitcom as well as the new Land of Smoke and Mirrors: A Cultural History of Los Angeles. They discuss the difference between Los Angeles obsession and Los Angeles chauvinism; his time in Berkeley, when Los Angeles became the enemy; the Christopher Dorner incident and the old racial wounds it has re-opened; Gangster Squad and the cinematic abuse of Los Angeles history; the city's tendency to repurpose rhetoric about it, no matter how negative, and Reyner Banham's role in that; Los Angeles as Sodom, Gomorrah, and whipping boy; what the German word Stadtbild means, and how Los Angeles lacks it; the great power ascribed to the city by its criticism; whether or not we only use twenty percent of brains, or of cities; hidden places, including but not limited to Barnsdall Park; the work Los Angeles requires from you to master it, and whether that counts as a desirable quality; how technology enables you to watch Sunset Boulevard as you cruise down Sunset Boulevard; Watts Towers as the key to Los Angeles; the city's far-flung museums, and their 21st-century tendency to roll large objects through the streets; how he came to teach a Rhetoric of Los Angeles class, and what his students have taught him; the truth of most local legends, even when contradictory; and how best to see the Los Angeles palimpsest.
Arianne Zucker, who was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2010, portrays unlucky-in-love Nicole Dimera, a former model, on NBC’s "Days of our Lives." Zucker, the quintessential Southern California native, was discovered at age 16 by a modeling scout from It Models. She began modeling in Los Angeles where she shot several clothing catalogues and campaigns. Her career later took her to such places as Paris, Japan, Australia, and New York. As Zucker’s modeling career prospered, so did her interest in television. She appeared in several national commercials for Mazda, Miata, McDonald’s and Burger King. Zucker decided to settle back down in Los Angeles and began her studies as an actress at Pierce College. It was there that she first acquired her love for theater. She was involved in several workshops that included performances in Beth Henley’s "Crimes of the Heart" and Neil Simon’s "Last of the Red Hot Lovers." She continued her studies at the highly reputable Howard Fine Studios and recently finished a two-year program of scene study improv with Stephen Book. Zucker got her first role in a student film at AFI (American Film Institute), and two months after shooting, auditioned for the role of Nicole Walker on the long running soap “Days of our Lives.” Four months later, Zucker became the newest member of the cast and won the Soap Opera Digest Award in 2004 for Outstanding Villainess. In recent months, Zucker has become ambassador for Habitat for Humanity in the San Fernando Valley. She will soon be traveling to Philadelphia and Detroit, among other cities, where she will be leading their charity builds. She has also participated in numerous USO Tours, including visiting bases in Southern California and Guantanamo Bay. The non-profit organization Success for Kids (www.sfk.org) is also close to her heart and she has spent time mentoring children in a structural development program.
