"Women in Refrigerators": Understanding Fridging in Superhero MediaIn this eye-opening episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki tackle the controversial topic of "fridging" with special guest Jessica Plummer, a comic book historian with expertise in gender representation. The term "fridging," coined by comic writer Gail Simone in 1999, refers to the killing, maiming, or assault of female characters primarily to advance a male character's storyline. What exactly is fridging and where did the term come from? The term "women in refrigerators" originated from a 1994 Green Lantern issue where Kyle Rayner's girlfriend Alexandra DeWitt was murdered and stuffed in a refrigerator by villain Major Force. This served solely to motivate Kyle's character development and revenge arc. The podcast explores how this pattern repeats across comics, films, and TV shows, with female characters frequently introduced only to be brutalized for male character development. Why is fridging problematic beyond just character death? The discussion highlights how fridging isn't just about women dying - it's about the specific ways their bodies are violated and displayed, often in sexualized or gratuitously violent ways. The hosts examine how female characters are disproportionately subjected to these fates compared to male characters, despite already being underrepresented in superhero media to begin with. How does fridging differ from other character deaths? The podcast examines the key differences between fridging and other character deaths. Male characters often die heroically in battle with "noble sacrifices" and frequently return from death, while female characters are more commonly assaulted in domestic settings like kitchens, portrayed as helpless victims rather than heroes making choices, and rarely return from death. What about fridging and race in media? The conversation expands to discuss similar patterns with characters of color, who are often introduced as side characters only to be killed to motivate white protagonists. While the panel debates whether "fridging" should specifically refer to violence against women or could apply more broadly, they agree the core issue is about which characters get to be protagonists versus disposable plot devices.Other topics discussed:The original Green Lantern fridging incident that gave the trope its nameHow Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame exhibits elements of fridgingThe repeated visual motif of female character deaths (like Gwen Stacy's fall)Examples of media that subvert fridging expectations, like John Wick and DaredevilHow some characters have "climbed out of the fridge" through character resurrection and reimaginingWriters and creators who have worked to challenge and change this tropeThe relationship between shock value and fridging**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. 163: Mariel Hemingway: Actress and Expert in Mental & Physical Health in the areas of mindfulness, grounding and earthing talks about overcoming her family’s stigma of suicide and becoming a successful actress and mental health advocate. Mariel Hemingway What have Mariel Hemingway and her significant other Bobby done to anchor themselves in Southern California during the he COVID-19 pandemic? “We are very careful how we spend our time outdoors, whether we are meditating, the kind of food we’re eating, and all of these kinds of things. So, our lifestyle really hasn’t changed that much. Our connections to other people obviously have dramatically changed. I think what has been the most challenging is probably not seeing my daughters enough, or something like that. For us, it’s about staying focused on being the best we can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. We focus on our food. We focus on our exercise. We focus on connecting with nature.” On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Mariel Hemingway, Actress and Expert in Mental & Physical Health in the areas of mindfulness, grounding and earthing. Mariel Hemingway discusses the three main circles of her life, her family life, her acting life, and her self-care around mental illness life. How does Mariel approach self-care and her yoga practices: “When you talk about my family. When you talk about acting. When you talk about mental health, see I think all of those things are kind of interconnected anyway because the first thing that you have to do in life is to look at your story, your history, where you come from. Once you look at your story, your history, your patterns, your heritage, you can then determine the choices that you have been making your entire life.” What You Will Learn: Mariel Hemingway talks about what the process of earthing means to her. “I’m very big into ‘earthing,’ grounding, literally taking my shoes off and going for hikes every single day out on trails with no shoes on, because I believe it is one of the great ways to stay literally grounded but to also help with anxiety, help with the uncertainty of times.” How does self-care play a role in her daily life? “Self-care is health care. More than anything, taking care of ourselves is our responsibility and it also needs to turn into our joy because our lifestyle is everything. What we do in the morning, our morning routines. Whether we watch a sunrise and ground. How we make our coffee in the morning. Whether we make it with intention. Whether we are quiet and still and present doing the things that we are doing.” How can we rethink bad memories so they don’t keep getting in our way? “Memories can’t hurt you. They can inform you of what you have been doing and the choices that you have been making. So, once we look at those stories, then we are on the path to our own recovery, and the recovery is from worrying about what has already happened. And you can’t worry about what has already happened, and you can’t worry about what has already happened, because it has already happened, and you can’t worry about is going to happen because we don’t know.” Mariel Hemingway’s family has had seven suicides in it, including her paternal grandfather, the great American author Ernest Hemingway. How has she worked with her daughters to prevent them from falling into a similar cycle? “I think there is always somebody in a family that says, ‘I’m done. I’m changing this. We’re not going there anymore,’ and I think I made that choice. I think I made the choice to say, The buck stops here. I don’t want to hand this off to my children. It doesn’t mean that my daughters don’t have problems and don’t have issues.” Regarding her documentary “Running from Crazy,” how did she get Oprah Winfrey to produce it? “I have this really close from Lisa Erspamer. She worked for Oprah for years. She had her show on ABC. She was also one of the creative directors over at the OWN Network. We were really close and one day she looked at me and said, ‘We need to do a documentary on your family and your family’s life.’ And I said, ‘What are you crazy? They are nuts. No.’ She goes, ‘That’s just the point.’ She said, ‘We have to do it because everybody has a story. Everybody comes from something imperfect.’” Doing the Movie Lipstick Mariel talks about her older sister’s drug and alcohol issues and her sister feeling overshadowed by Mariel’s acting success. “She was seven years older than me. I was this young girl and she invited me to play her little sister in a movie, and it was her dream to be an actress. In retrospect, thinking about it, it was heart wrenching because it wasn’t until years later that I realised her whole life she just felt like she was second best. She wasn’t Ernest Hemingway and then I came along and I got really good reviews. I get nominated for things and my career starts.” Mental Health During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Mariel Hemingway also address es mental health and suicide. “What is critical about mental health for me, especially suicide, is that there are solutions and I think that people think that when they are going through highly anxious times or depressign times that there is nothing that they can do and that is simply not true. There are many, many different solutions, and again it is our physical health, our mental health is the same way.” Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest - The Lhotse Challenge: https://www.markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy/ Mariel Hemingway website: marielhemingway.co Mariel Hemingway social media: Instagram Twitter

EPISODE 26: GREEN LANTERN & SUPERMAN Vs MONGUL: 'BREAKING IN' The Last Sons heed the call of a listener request and take a look at a Superman & Green Lantern team-up! This time it's Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern and the pair face off against...you guessed it....Mongul!! A fun-filled romp very much of the 90's....you only have to look at Superman's hair for proof! Also included are our thoughts on the recently released Batman/Superman mini which sees the classic duo face off against The Batman Who Laughs! All that, plus the usual ramblings from two very mad men... SHOW NOTES: The New Green Lantern Vol. 3, issue #52 The New Green Lantern Vol. 3, issue #53 Batman/Superman Vol. 2, issue #1 Kingdom Come Superman Figure Judge Death/Batman who Laughs Blackest Night DCeased Superman animated series Kyle Rayner episode SYNOPSIS: (#52, Written by Connor-El) Kyle Rayner is the new Green Lantern and unbeknownst to him also the last. Him and his girlfriend Alex are on a beach practising. Alex, being a photographer takes photos of Kyle in the Green Lantern outfit to use for publicity. He also practices using his power ring on the beach involving making weapons, protection and much to Alex's anger Kyle using the ring to make her appear in a swimsuit, which results in Kyle getting a slap to the face. Meanwhile at the Slab facility Mongul is enacting his plan for revenge against Green Lantern and Superman (not knowing that the Current Green Lantern Kyle is not the one he prviously fought) has started a riot to escape, with other villains like Major Force participating. After much bloodhed Mongul interrogates a guard to find out where his targets are. The guard says Green Lantern was spotted in LA, Mongul kills him, steals his jetpack and sets off to end Green Lantern. Elsewhere homeless man who saw Kyle receive the ring of power gives a green substance he found to some strange organisation he believes is the government, and is killed for his trouble. Back at the beach, Kyle and Alex and attacked by Mongul who after a brief struggle, has Kyle and Alex at his mercy.... (#53, Written by Rey-Zod) With his life at the mercy of the relentless Mongul, Kyle Rayner (the new Green Lantern) is fortuitously saved from death by an intervening, and very mullet-y Superman. With now both of them opposing the crazed Mongul, a colourful battle ensues which includes Kyle manifesting various complex objects from his ring (such as gauntlets, guns and lawnmowers!), much to the surprise of Superman. The Man of Steel is unfamiliar with this new iteration of the Green Lantern, but nevertheless he aides Kyle as Mongul retaliates again and again. Surprisingly, the colour yellow does not seem to hinder the Green Lantern in the slightest and it’s Kyle’s unabashed confidence which finally defeats Mongul. Throwing all caution to the wind, Kyle manifests a speeding train to run into Mongul and render him unconscious. Superman thanks Kyle and flies away with Mongul, taking him to an incarceration far, far away. Meanwhile, a shady figure by the name of Mr. Deacon cuts deals with another mysterious figure as they discuss the matter of an unknown, green alloy - possibly extraterrestrial in nature. The colourful foe is Major Force, and all leads point towards Kyle’s girlfriend Alex De Witt. It appears Major Force is now after the green ring...and he’ll remove any appendage necessary to get it! Designer Dan Liu, who owns both his namesake label as well as the fashion brand Tatsuaki, needs fellow designers to pick up the pace. Designers used to have months to design new collections, and that window has been dwindled down to about two weeks. It's not just designers who are in jeopardy, either — department stores, according to Liu, are at risk of going extinct thanks to the institutions navigating digital advancements in the industry like dinosaurs. Liu joined the Glossy Podcast to discuss how designers are dealing with the new crushing pace of the industry, what changes are coming next year, and why see-now-buy-now isn't the answer.

After three years and nearly two hundred episodes, the end is finally here! Thank you...all of you, for downloading and listening to the final episode of JUST ONE OF THE GUYS. We've come a long way on this journey, from Hal walking the Earth like Kane from Kung Fu, John dealing with the Mosaic world, Guy going from GL to tattooed morphing Guy, and Kyle lucking upon the most powerful weapon in the universe and becoming one of he greatest Lantern's ever. And in issue 181, Kyle faces his greatest challenge...what to do with Major Force, a brutal killer who just...WON'T...DIE! Does Kyle get the ending he deserved, or does he get ridden out on the rails in favor of Hal Jordan returning under the pen of Geoff Johns? You'll have to listen to find out. Plus I spend some time cleaning out the JOOTG e-mail bag, as well as giving a personal thank you to all of the wonderful guest hosts who were kind enough to come on this show and talk with me about these comics. There are SO MANY wonderful people who helped elevate this show above what I could have ever made it to be, and I can't thank all of you enough. And as an added bonus, the songmeister supreme, Dr. Bill Robinson, has offered up a little spoken word song celebrating the show's ending. Stick around until the end for that...you won't be disappointed (especially you, Michael Bradley). So what are you waiting for? In this, the penultimate episode of Just One of the Guys, I and my Alpha and Omega co-host Thomas Deja take a look at issue 180 of Green Lantern. Having taken fellow GL John Stewart's advice, Kyle heads out to L.A. to meet with his mother, eat an omelette, and say a final, FINAL farewell to his lost loves, Donna Troy and Alex Dewitt (Wait, Donna is dead?!? When the heck did this happen?!?). But the issue doesn't spend all its time on dwelling on Kyle's female realtionships as it quickly switches to an out and out horror movie with the masked killer being none other than Major Force! And if you think that there might be another incident with a kitchen appliance that will raise the hackles of Gail Simone, well you might just be on to something. So unless you want to be punched from L.A. to the Angeles National Forest, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening! Special thanks to Thomas Deja, co-host of Better in the Dark, for being the most frequent guest host on this show. I couldn't have asked for a better person to talk about these comics with, and I am so glad we were able to wrap up the show together. As we draw closer and closer to the final story in the 1990's Green Lantern run, Just One of the Guys takes a look at issue 179 of the book, where a weary, frustrated, and down right pissed off Kyle Rayner decides to go directly to the source of his problems and make like Rowdy Roddy Piper sans bubble gum (Rest in peace, good sir). Unfortunately the source isn't the writing desk of Ben Raab, but the shadowy government office of Major Force. But while Kyle is busy wrecking up the place, fellow Green Lantern John Stewart just happens to be in the neighborhood and tries to get Kyle to deal with his problems rationally. This goes about as well as you'd expect it to and "consequences" (Copyright Alan and Emily Middleton, 2014, all rights reserved) get handed out between our two heroes. It's definitely a middle chapter of the story, but it keeps us moving to what looks to be a satisfying ending. So unless you want me to include MORE Tommy Shaw soundtrack songs in upcoming episodes, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start to listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Happy Friday, dear listeners, and thanks for dropping by my humble little podcast hacienda known as Just One of the Guys. On today's show our trip through the Green Lantern comics of the 1990's brings us to a story written by famed Superman writer and artist, Dan Jurgens. And since Dan is penning issue 115 of Green Lantern, why shouldn't he be able to bring one of his most iconic created characters, Booster Gold, into the book? No reason whatsoever!!! And just for good measure, Plastic Man, a MacGuffin box, and a villain called the Supplier (oooohh...scary!) get thrown into the mix as well. Plus, like last time, we're running through the Green Lantern Annuals. And this time out it's the Year One Annual event where all the annuals told origin tales...so yeah, there's that. But this origin tale gives you two Lanterns for the price of one, as Hal and Kyle do a Freaky Friday body swap, leaving Kyle to take on the Invisible Destroyer and Hal to tackle Major Force from their first years as heroes. Does the quality of annuals keep getting better, or do we slide back into Bloodlines levels of quality. I guess you'll have to listen to find out!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Hello everyone, and welcome to the end of an era at Just One of the Guys. Sadly as the Image chasing era of the 1990's draws to an end, so to does the Guy Gardner Warrior comic. In issue 44 of the book, the wi-fi of manly manliness, Beau Smith, teams up with artist Mitch Byrd to close out this chapter on the character of Guy Gardner, and they do it in fine style. Guy as written by Smith has never been better, and despite the over the top look and feel that was hefted on the character, Beau sends the character off in style. But I'd be remiss if I didn't include the Green Lantern issue, where Kyle takes on Grayven, a evil despot with daddy issues. Darkstars get taken out, John Stewart almost gets killed, and Adam Strange...is woefully underused. But Kyle has his first "epic save" so there is that... ... ... I'm sorry, I'm still kind of bummed that Guy Gardner is coming to and end. But thankfully I've got veteran podcaster and good friend Thomas Deja (host of Better in the Dark, Damn Your Eyes! Damn Your Ears!, and The Nocturne Travel Agency) to aid me through my grief. We celebrate this hidden gem in the era of big guns, big boobs and pouches, and give our respects to both Guy, Beau and Byrd. So come along and get some Vuldarian justice with us; it's what Guy would want you to do.Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! It's another Friday, which means not only the end of the work week (hopefully for most of you) but that its time for a brand new episode of Just One of the Guys. This time out, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and his on again/off again girlfriend Donna Troy have to travel to the adoptive home of Adam Strange (one of DC's woefully underused heroes) to put a stop to the swath of destruction caused by brand new baddie, Grayven. Will he turn out to be the ultimate challenge for GL, or will he end up like many of Kyle's newly introduced villains (I'm looking at you, Purgatory)? And speaking of c-list villains, Guy Gardner is having to take on all of his rouges gallery in this, his penulitmate issue. Will Guy fall prey to the combined might of Dementor, Sledge, Joe (Guy's clone) Gardner, and... Black Serpent? I would sure as heck hope not. Plus we get the reveal of who the Quorum was growing in their "SCIENCE!!!" labs, and he's bound and detemined to give Guy some payback. It's part one of the final chapter of the Beau Smith era of Guy, and you definitely don't want to miss out! So grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Hello you lovely gatecrashers and welcome to another episode of Just One of the Guys, the most exclusive podcast on the internet, but you've all got VIP passes so it's all good. First off, we've got the death of Major Force (seriously, he's really dead for certain this time) in the Green Lantern book, where Guy and Kyle begin their life long friendship by beating the bejesus out of some thugs underneath the Washington Mall. And someone gets revenge on Major Force, who dies in this issue...really. Lying on the floor face down stone cold dead. Never to be seen again. Over in the Guy Garnder book, it's the opening of the most exclusive bar in all of the DCU...WARRIORS! Buck and Guy have opened the Superhero version of Planet Hollywood and everyone...I mean EVERYONE in the DCU has shown up for opening night. Well, except for Batman and his family, but they've been through a lot recently. But the Blood Pack, Loose Cannon, and Judo Master are there, so that makes up for it, right...RIGHT? Plus it couldn't be a bar opening in the 90's without an appearance by the Main Man himself, Lobo. And since this awesomeness can't be justly conveyed by one man, I've brought along my good friend Thomas Deja, host of Better in the Dark, to make sure I don't miss any of the multitude of cameos in this book. Plus Thomas gives me a reason why it might not be the best idea to cover the All New Titans book on the show, as it isn't Marv Wolfman's greatest run. Friends don't let friends read All New Titans. So, if you want to know why the heck Lead is wearing a wife beater, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Happy holidays dear listener, and welcome back to another episode of Just One of the Guys. And even though the most recent holiday was April Fools Day (Tee-hee!), in the Green Lantern book, it's all about Christmas. Which for Kyle means monitor duty at Titans HQ, possible internal damage due to Impulse super speed tackling him, and dealing with the classic Green Lantern villain, Dr Polaris in the snazzy 90's version of his overly purple costume. But he does get to stand under the mistletoe with Donna Troy, so that's definitely a great present. Over in the Guy Gardner book, we get to unwrap the present that Major Force left in Guy's fridge...and it's not what you think. Plus Guy pounds the living snot out of Major Force as the two battle their way around the Beltway of Washington D.C. It's a giant fight sequence artfully done by craftsmen Beau Smith, Mitch Byrd, and Dan Davis, with a twist ending that will leave the internet on fire...if the internet was that prevelant during the time of publishing. So unless you want your Christmas ham served with an extra side of Vuldarian justice, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start to listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Hello wonderful people, and welcome to another episode of Just One of the Guys. This week, we're getting geared up for the "epic" Zero Hour event with both the books bearing the cover copy for that crossover. Green Lantern has less to do with Zero Hour though and more to do with Kyle finally getting his lantern, almost electrocuting Major Force, and getting a expositional summary of GL history by none other than Alan Scott. Then on the last page, Superman shows up to give a reason for the Zero Hour cover. Guy Gardner, however, has a more direct tie in to the story, as he, Steel, Supergirl, and Batgirl (what, wasn't she paralyzed and called Oracle now?) get sucked into different time eras all the while fighting the supposed antagonist of the event, Extant! Yes, with a name like Extant, you know he's got to be scary...and if the name doesn't scare you, the spooky red and black mask will!!! BOOGA BOOGA!!! Anyhow, unless you want to spend some quality time with Kari Limbo, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks!
