Robbie had me at low tech, but what really drew me to this book and to everything Robbie does is his naturally inclusive spirit and chronic generosity. The point of this podcast is to celebrate the design of inclusive performance and I can think of no one who thinks about welcoming people as intuitively as Robbie does. Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Pierre Omidyar, “We have the technology, finally, that for the first time in human history allows people to really maintain rich connections with much larger numbers of people.”   YouTube: https://youtu.be/flJ6r2ApTEg   Check Out These Highlights:  Have you ever gotten a great idea for a new program, spent a few months putting together the sales page and recorded professional videos, and gotten a ho-hum response when you launched?    You may have then identified your smallish email list as the problem and set about fixing that, but what if you could successfully launch no matter the size of your list? What if your likely prospects could tell you exactly the problem, they want you to solve and exactly how to describe your program? That's possible if you take the time to build a list of likely prospects from your existing network, host research calls, and validate your big idea with a pilot program.    Doing so will save you money, time, and effort - and likely lead to some unexpected opportunities.    About Robbie Samuels:   Robbie is an author, speaker, and business growth strategy coach recognized as a networking expert by Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Lifehacker, and Inc.  He is also a virtual event design consultant and executive Zoom producer recognized as an industry expert in the field of digital event design.    Robbie is the author of "Croissants vs. Bagels: Strategic, Effective, and Inclusive Networking at Conferences" and "Small List, Big Results: Launch a Successful Offer No Matter the Size of Your Email List."   He is a Harvard Business Review contributor. Robbie is the host of the On the Schmooze podcast and #NoMoreBadZoom Virtual Happy Hours.   How to Get in Touch With Robbie Samuels:   Website:  http://www.robbiesamuels.com/ Email:  ROBBIE@ROBBIESAMUELS.COM Free Big Results Toolkit:  http://www.SmallListBigResults.com   Stalk me online! Do you think you have a small email list? How can you have a successful and profitable launch when you don't have as many subscribers on your list as you'd like to have? This week we're talking to Gemma Bonham-Carter about how to build a pre-launch email list (and have a BIG launch!) Are you ready to find out how to get massive results no matter what size your list happens to be? You'll want to take notes on this one!  SOME EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: (0:18) Join our https://www.facebook.com/emailmarketingheroes/ (FREE Facebook group). (3:30) Did Gemma really sleep with a tennis racket for 3 months? (6:39) Can you have a successful launch with a 'small list'? (8:15) The key to making money when you have a 'small' list. (10:53) How to use the pre-launch period to grow your email list. (12:45) How long should your pre-launch period be? (13:55) What kind of activities can you run in your pre-launch period? (16:51) Should you create your course in advance? (19:03) Launch at a higher price & validate your course with your audience. (22:58) Subject line of the week with Gemma Bonham-Carter. Can you have a successful launch with a 'small list'?One of the things we tell our coaching students and members inside https://get.emailmarketingheroes.com/league/ (The League) is to never say they have a ‘small list'. Because we want people not to judge their email list based on how many subscribers others have. But if you're just starting out, your audience may still be on the smaller side. So can you still have a successful launch and still make money?  We asked our friend Gemma Bonham-Carter. And she told us that typically when someone launches their first digital product or online course, they'll go for a low-ticket price item to 'test the waters'. Why? Because they often lack confidence and suffer from a fair share of Impostor Syndrome.  Except that strategy doesn't work. And, Gemma says, it's just basic maths. If you have a smaller audience, you have to charge a higher price point in order for your product to be profitable. You can definitely make serious gains from a small list, but only if you're able to sell at a high price based on the transformation and results you're delivering to your customers.  The key to making money when you have a 'small' listGemma has seen business owners make $15k in one launch with less than 200 subscribers on their email list. Once you've done that, you'll then have the confidence to show up differently in your business - launch more products, write emails with more conviction, become better at email marketing, and draw in a bigger audience.  But if you sell at smaller prices to start with, you'll need higher volumes to make any money. So do the opposite of what a lot of people do - instead of starting with a $50 product, sell a high-ticket item and then layer smaller products into the mix when you already have a steady cash flow coming into your business. Your product doesn't need to be cheap! Have confidence in yourself based on the transformation, outcome, and results that you can generate for someone.  According to Gemma, having around 200 subscribers is enough to have a successful and profitable launch. However, the key to making real money is to run pre-launch activities to grow your email list. And if you don't have 200 subscribers just yet, there are things you can do to grow your list in that pre-launch period. How to use the pre-launch period to grow your email listGemma tells us that the longer you spend in the pre-launch period, the bigger the launch tends to be. And the key is to position yourself as an expert with thought-provoking and polarising content that shows your audience that you're talking about your topic differently from others. This gets them paying attention.  So you could run a webinar or a mini-series of training sessions inside your Facebook group, for example. Think about the way you...

After finishing the three courses I released over the summer, I took Robbie Samuels' advice and took a month off from production. (He talks about this in his wonderful book, Small List, Big Results that you can get here with my Associate's link: https://amzn.to/3xyGkKg ) I've read the book a few times and this was one of the practices he suggested that stood out. The time off isn't necessarily idle time. It's time to reflect on what I learned and to identify parts of the process that I could improve. One of the things I have become aware of is how long it takes to edit course videos. As I looked back on the three projects, I realized that shooting the videos took very little time. I could record 5 - 6 lesson videos in an hour. Each course had about 30-45 lessons, so my video shoots accounted for between 8 and 9 hours of work. Editing the same 5-6 videos added about 2-3 hours of production time, so looking back over the process, I could have gained around 25 hours of time for each course if I'd hired a professional editor to do the job. I could use those hours to market, sell, and deliver services, so the costs will be easily offset. And the professional editor will do a better job taking less time than I do editing my own course videos. I've been looking at other areas where I could improve results and spend less time. They're in the video. #productivity #collaboration #outsourcing

He wrote his first book, launched a group coaching program and podcast, and was a TedX speaker. His specialty was helping people with their networking skills at conferences. So when COVID hit, he had to do some major rethinking. The question he asked was: “How do I show up and add value?”  His answer was to become skilled in hosting virtual events and doing virtual networking. He launched the free virtual #NoMoreBadZoom networking happy hour and soon was being called upon to help organizations host and facilitate virtual events with a focus on increasing engagement and participation. From there, his business really took off. His second book, Small List, Big Results, is based on his experiences building a business and helping others do so, too. Robbie explains how his vision of being of service is key to business-building and networking and how it's helped him to succeed. Now, let's get better together. Actionable Insights Robbie says that the pandemic enabled him and other entrepreneurs to try things out without worrying too much about failing, because “nobody else was looking.” Consider how this might apply to your own ventures. What would you do if nobody else was looking?  Robbie explains his marketing strategy as being “anti-funnel” in that he offers a variety of programs that allow people to get value when and where they are ready to do so. The cost of a lower-tier program can be applied to a higher-tier program, if the customer decides it's right. If not, that's fine with him. Building trust in relationships is paramount.  Talk to and learn from the people you are trying to serve. Do your research and ask questions while you're in the process of building your service or product. Don't just build it and expect people to come.  Links to Explore Further  Robbiesamuels.com/ethos Contentandconnectionclub.com  Podcast: On the Schmooze Robbie Samuels on LinkedIn Small List Big Results No More Mad Zoom Meetings Croissants vs Bagels Keep In Touch Book or Blog or Twitter or LinkedIn or JSYPR Learn more about your ad choices. 76% of people say networking is the top driver for attending an event, but the amount that have a plan to achieve that goal is much smaller. With many events having moved to a digital platform, networking has become harder - and yet, even more critical to success. To help understand the problem, and find some answers, we've invited Robbie Samuels to join us. Robbie is a networking expert, consultant, and advisor. He is also the author of Croissants vs. Bagels: Strategic, Effective, and Inclusive Networking at Conferences and Small List, Big Results: Launch a Successful Offer No Matter the Size of Your Email List, plus, he is the host of the podcast On The Schmooze. The arrival of the pandemic meant the end of in-person conferences, but as restrictions are loosening, we are starting to see these events return. We discuss what the post-pandemic conference scene will look like. Robbie explains that there is still great importance for in-person events, but they will have to be more thoughtful and meaningful than ever before. We also discuss the undeniable value of virtual events. Robbie explains that many of the tricks of the trade used by keynote speakers in person simply don't work on a small screen. He compares in-person speaking to a theatrical performance, and virtual events to a television show, where production and delivery is very different. Robbie gives examples to help speakers make changes to their delivery and connect with the audience in either style. Lastly, we discuss how the virtual environment has changed business models. No longer can keynote speakers rely solely on big conference gigs. Robbie discusses the diverse platform you need to deliver content, and how you can continue to provide in-person value - digitally! Robbie has a special offer for our listeners! Click HERE to get The Big Results Toolkit for Free! Three Key Takeaways: Thought Leaders need to have a clear plan to achieve networking goals at both in-person and virtual events. When delivering thought leadership content virtually, consider changing the pace every seven minutes to keep the audience engaged. Don't rely too much on one method of income for thought leadership. By diversifying your business model, you'll increase revenue and protect yourself from future disruptions.

Robbie is the author of "Croissants vs. Bagels: Strategic, Effective, and Inclusive Networking at Conferences" and "Small List, Big Results: Launch a Successful Offer No Matter the Size of Your Email List." He is a Harvard Business Review contributor. His clients include thought leaders, entrepreneurial women, associations, national, and statewide advocacy organizations, women's leadership summits, including Feeding America, California WIC Association, and AmeriCorps. Robbie is the host of the On the Schmooze podcast and #NoMoreBadZoom Virtual Happy Hours.   Most passionate about I have multiple tracks in my business. I do one-on-one coaching, group programs, all about helping people build an audience before they try to launch an offer. I also work with my virtual event clients on bringing their events online with less stress and greater participant engagement. What had been somewhat dormant, but is just starting to come back, is working with organizations around their in-person events to help them become more engaging and to really support their participants through what, for many, is their first experience at an in-person event. Robbie's career and story I spent 15 years organizing fundraising events and doing major gift work. On the side, I started speaking and showing people how to network. I was working with boards of directors and foundations. I did both of those things for about five years. Eventually, I realized that there was a possible career in doing this full-time. In 2015, I left my comfortable and safe career to really see if this thing I'd been doing for five years was going to turn into something. That's when I decided to launch a podcast, which came out a year later. I launched my first book, which today has 191 reviews on Amazon. I then got a chance to do a TEDx. Every year, I had different opportunities. I was well on my way to being an overnight success, 10 years in the making, when everything got upended in March 2020. Best advice for entrepreneurs My second book is called Small List, Big Results: Launch a Successful Offer No Matter the Size of Your Email List. That subtitle belies the fact that, a lot of times, as entrepreneurs, as experts, we get really excited about some kind of solution, some kind of offer. We get some kind of program offer—an online course app, whatever the modality is. And we rush out to market to tell people about it. The marketplace basically responds with “Who are you? What is this? Nope, I don't need this.” And we're just shocked. I think the better approach would be to not create solutions in a vacuum, but to invite input from your most likely prospects. The biggest, most critical failure with customers I mentioned this in my latest book. When my first book came out, I didn't have a very clear plan for what kind of offer would come from it. But I had a pilot in mind, and I did run a successful pilot. I got great feedback. When I went to sell the next iteration, I created a landing page and took video testimonials and written testimonials from the few people who'd gone through the initial pilot. I had 250 people view the landing page. But they did not contact me to learn more about the program. So, the problem wasn't my ability to get the word out. But in that same span of time, several people reached out to me, asking for other types of services and other types of support. That was when I really started to understand that the packaging wasn't matching. People were seeing me as a resource, but they didn't see the program as a solution. Biggest success with customers

If a trainer tells me they hit a plateau and can't get more clients, I ask them about their email list.  If you aren't working on growing that email list, chances are that's a large part of why.  Before you get more sales skills, you want to attract more people, more on that in a minute.    The Problem with a Small List is….  If you're in a “launch” with few people, and then you “launch” again with the same people there may be a small number who say yes. It wasn't the best time for them before and it is now. They were people who needed a little more time to know and trust you before deciding.  But you'll also be losing a small percent of them which you should expect.  If you don't lose subscribers every time you email, you're probably not emailing enough.    Those people are not seeing all your posts every day, you know.  They're busy. They want the news delivered with white gloves and that is why they subscribed to email. They may not like social media. So, while you think they see and hear that and your daily message is enough, it's not true.    … You can't get more clients online.    3 Reasons You Can't Get More Clients Online, boil down to this:  The email list you have now is small or abandon You're attracting anyone too broad a group on social Inconsistent habits (you're busy but not productive)     Here's what to focus on:    1)    You need to grow your email list Have a freebie that peeks interest and desire (my freebie builder cheat sheet)   Make sure you're sharing relevant social content and suggesting it as a CTA for those who want more Have a profile page with links directly to it (no ugly URLs someone will never remember that only your mother would go to the trouble of tediously entering – if she would!) 2)    You need to attract the right kind of people to your social (first step before email) Have you reviewed who you attract?  Do you clearly tell who this is for and who it's not? 3)    You aren't focusing on the right things consistently. If you focus on your social media more than you focus on your customers and business, something is definitely WRONG!    Are You Addicted? To be honest, does it give you a little adrenaline hit when your video got XXX views on Tik Tok? Or frustrated you when you spend half an hour creating a reel and it doesn't get much of anything? Your time and your energy can get sucked into social media and it's not going to move the needle for you. Let's keep in mind that while it's necessary, it's something that takes a dedicated 15 minutes twice a day and between you really need to be building the business behind it.    There's a difference between not being consistent and being strategic. You'll see sometimes if you followed me on Instagram, I don't share every day. I usually do, but when I either have something that didn't get much traffic I thought would, is getting a lot of traffic, or it's a date that warrants a little longer time, I purposefully won't post for a day or two leaving room for prior posts to gain traction. But I will add them to the story again to increase engagement.    I have an action challenge for you. What do you need to focus on?  Do you have a funnel that converts? I'd focus on that before I built a course.  Do you have a system you've proven with yourself, and then tested on a pool of others for testimonials and proof that it works?  Do you have copy that defines your unique difference? There are a million options for how to exercise, why you?  DECIDE. That's the action. Decide where you really will get the biggest wins from focusing on and then do… Monitor your time on social media and if your brain is constantly flirting with it, you're probably not getting anything else done.    I'm going to link to the resources mentioned in this episode. Before you visit it, my hope is that you're walking or working out, because for me at least, that's when I listen and get tons of clarity … not when I'm sitting at my desk. And not when I'm moving through a Bootcamp-like set of crazy moves.  Quick Tip I know you've turned up the speed on those social videos to show a lot of moves, energy, and not give a whole workout… but have you stopped to think that they relay a “frenzied” kind of feeling that makes people think you're a crazy intensity frenzied-pace kind of trainer?  What do you make viewers FEEL?  That's the question of the day!  And… how does social media make YOU FEEL? Spend less time on it and more on your business so it converts when you reach them. If you can't get more fitness clients online right now I hope this episode has been helpful.    Resources Mentioned in this episode: How to Build a Better Freebie (freebie, how meta is that!?)   Marketing to Women Copywriting course     Other Episodes You Might Like:  Exclusive Look Inside Build Your Business Accelerator Mastermind 5 Ways to Use Shock to Attract More Fitness Clients

When things crumble in your business, sometimes you don't know what steps to take next.  At times you get stuck and can't think of a good plan to overcome the situation. That's why it is a good thing to surround yourself with great people who help you see possibilities amid crisis, who help you push out of your comfort zone, and see what else you can do to give value to others. In this episode, Robbie shares how you can show up and make a difference in other people's lives, finding out what you truly love to do best that helps others prosper themselves. He also talks about his book -- Small List, Big Results which tackles how to build a ready market for your offer, service, or product. Often we create courses and products with no willing audience to consume them. And that has to change for us to be successful in whatever we want to be created. He also highlighted the small P and big P problems and the need to make people aware of them, so it's easier to sell the solution to them. He also made known where people are missing the point in terms of success and commitment because once you know it, you learn to hold yourself accountable for the results you want. Robbie Samuels is a multi-hyphenate human. He is a professional speaker – business growth strategy coach – virtual event design consultant – executive Zoom producer – emcee – podcast host – author – virtual presentation skills trainer.  He has been recognized as an expert in multiple areas, published a book that received nearly 250 reviews globally on Amazon, was invited to do a TEDx on his signature networking technique, and hosted a podcast for over five years (and counting). When the pandemic shuttered in-person events, he swiftly reinvented himself to continue to provide value to his clients and his network. "I think that we get out of our own way.
