Manish shares his lessons learned from his time at Google and how they shaped his approach to venture capital.About Manish PatelManish is a Silicon Valley veteran who solves problems at the intersection of business, technology, and human experience. He follows his passion for technologies that address deep needs and evolve to products which become part of everyday life.At Google, Manish was fortunate to lead and collaborate with teams that designed, developed, and scaled products with global impact including Google Ads, TV, and Maps. In addition, he built a few products that were brilliant failures. He also worked closely with the co-founders on special projects including running Google's corporate strategy and goal setting process: OKRs. As the company scaled from private to public, Manish held several other strategic roles and spent significant time overseas as Google established its global presence. After Google, Manish joined Highland Capital and helped expand the firm's offices in California. Manish is certainly the “accidental” venture capitalist but grew to love the craft. He focuses on early stage investing. Manish was able to partner with a number of exceptional entrepreneurs over the years who have scaled their businesses to public companies and multi billion dollar acquisitions.Manish's passion for building extends to many aspects of his life. He has taught in the Stanford School of Engineering for years as well as serving as a Fellow at the University of Toronto - CDL. He was also recognized as a Distinguished Fellow by IDEO CoLab. And when he can, he loves to find excuses to go to his local machine shop.Manish has spent his career at the edge of innovation as an operator, inventor, and as a venture capitalist. He deeply believes in the idea that the best products, those that truly impact us, shift from being novel technologies to becoming commonplace, disappearing into our daily lives.Episode LinksNava Venture Capital Firm https://nava.vc CONNECT WITH USGet Your Weekly EDGE Newsletter. Walk around the French Quarter any night, go to any music club from the Bywater to Uptown, or join any second-line, and you soon understand New Orleanians' perspective on life. We're open-minded and accepting. Famous people move here because they discover nobody's judging in New Orleans. Everybody's equal. By and large that's true, but might I suggest, there's one thing we're all judgmental about here. And that's our position in the State of Louisiana. We're one of the most famous cities in the world. So, we tend to implicitly believe that if someone moves here from, say Lafayette or Lake Charles, they're coming here because New Orleans has something to offer they can't get at home. Both of our guests on this edition of Out to Lunch challenge that preconception. They're both bringing something unique to New Orleans. Trip Goolsby moved here from Lake Charles. If I tell you he lives here but still keeps his original office open there, what business would you assume Trip is in? Oil and gas? Law? Actually, Trip is an MD whose clinic, Infinite Health Integrative Medicine Center, specializes in what they refer to as “age-reversal.” The clinic employs progressive medical strategies that aim to treat a wide range of conditions from fatigue to debilitating pain. In some cases they claim they can eliminate chronic disease, like diabetes. This isn't the kind of business we'd normally expect to see imported here from Lake Charles. And so, to Lafayette. This story is a little more traditional. But only because it's about food. Manish Patel grew up in New Orleans. He moved to Lafayette for college, where he studied architecture and graphic design. After graduating, Manish stayed in Acadiana - in Lafayette and Carencro - for 10 years before moving to New Orleans. And this is where food comes into the picture. Manish's father had spent a career in hotel kitchens, first in Mumbai, India, and then in New Orleans, and when Manish came back home, he started making Indian food. Specifically, an Indian street food, called dosas. First Manish sold his dosas at pop-ups. Then he moved to a space at the Auction House food court. And in 2018, he opened his own Indian street food restaurant, Tava. Very little in life is absolute. Most things are relative. For example, if you expect to find $10,000 in your bank account and you discover there's only $1,000 in there, you don't feel good. But if you think you have $10 in the bank, that same $1,000 can make you feel rich. The point being, our expectations can define our experience. How far can you push this? If you don't accept the generally-held expectation that time and age dictate your health, can you stay healthy longer? If you open a restaurant with no prior experience, can your expectation of success push you to create a real success? Challenging preconceptions and expectations can be, well, challenging. In the words of the immortal Little Feat, “Time loves a hero, but only time will tell.” When you succeed at defying conventional wisdom, it's groundbreaking and rewarding. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. And it was interesting that half the patients I made new dentures for say, thank you very much. I don't need implants now. I'm actually quite happy with these. And they're much better than they were before. I really don't think I want implants. So okay, maybe a lot of these patients don't always need implants. They just need to have well fabricated dentures... Jaz's Introduction: FP1, FP2, FP3. Do you know what I'm talking about? No, I'm not talking about filtering facepieces ie FFP3 masks like we're all experts now on FFP2 masks and FFP3 masks, unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic, but do you know what I mean, when in the context of implant restorations, what I mean by FP2 and FP3. Well, I'm embarrassed to say I had zero idea when it came to talking to our guest, Dr. Harpal Chana, who's a consultant restorative dentist, and the pinnacle of full arch implant prosthesis like this guy does some most complex work. The kind of work Harpal Chana does is based on referral work, complex full arch prosthesis work. So it's a great honor to have him on the show today. He is someone who I've looked up to for many years, like all the clinicians that I have on the show, I had a impromptu lunch with him in Pizza Express actually just behind his practice in Denton, when I was absolutely starstruck. I was like one year qualified, and that then I knew who he was and I knew he was about and I went to a few more of his study clubs in the local area, and he just has a brilliant clinician.

Mars is about to be visited by the first space mission for 40 years which is designed to seek signs of life on the Red Planet. Adam Rutherford talks to Dr Manish Patel of the Open University, a senior scientist on the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Once the spacecraft starts work, it may solve the mystery of ebbs and flows of methane gas in the Martian atmosphere. It may answer whether the gas is being produced by life beneath the planet's cold dusty surface. The American space agency Nasa already has a mission well underway on the Martian surface.. For four years, Curiosity has been exploring the deep geological past of a huge Martian crater and mountain. Recently possible signs of liquid water have been seen nearby. But rather than going closer to study it, Nasa wants the rover to avoid it. Project scientist Ashwin Vasavada explains why. Carlo Rovelli is a theoretical physicist and writer. His latest book 'Reality is not what it Seems' explores the history of thought about the physical nature of the universe and one of the latest incarnations of that great quests - loop quantum gravity theory. He talks to Adam about the fine grain of space and time, and exploding black holes. Palaeontologist Julia Clarke has discovered the oldest fossil of a bird's organ of song, the syrinx. At the University of Texas, Austin the delicate structure turned up in an X ray scan of a 66 million year old bird fossil from Antarctica. The fossil syrinx is so well preserved, it is possible to say what the call of this ancient bird Vegavis would have sounded like. It's also a massive boost in the quest to discover when birds first sang and recreating the dawn chorus back in the Age of Dinosaurs.
