236. Test That Marketing Tactic to Accelerate Your Business With Nikki Nash

If you are running an online business today you know how painful it can be to try out a new marketing tactic and have it bomb. Maybe you tried to launch a webinar, or that email campaign just didn't work. What if it didn't actual fail? There's a good chance you're receiving extraordinary data that could turn your business around. Today's guest is Market Your Genius author Nikki Nash, who approaches the testing of marketing with her M.A.A.D Scientist Framework. Nikki has always been the person that followed their gut with what decision to make – and her journey to marketing started when she got really frustrated with where her career was going. She started out as a journalist, working in magazines and ended up in advertising.  She went to get her MBA and landed a job at Intel where she ran digital content and social marketing for North America. She set her sights on becoming CMO. At the same time, her aunt was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Nikki's grandmother had died of it, and her mother had tested positive for the BRCA 2 gene. Nikki and her sister tested negative but Nikki knew she wanted to make a change. She quit her job and became a consultant, teaching marketing and working for a startup. “What I learned at startups is nobody knows what the heck they're doing, and they're really just testing and figuring stuff out, she says. Nikki says most people overcomplicate their business and that ends up slowing it down. She says when she started, she didn't have a website – she had a Google Doc with some information, but she still had money and clients coming in. Here are her five essential pieces, listen in for more: Power of singularity Identify one buyer Customer journey or marketing game plan Sales process Test and validate the plan Nikki developed the M.A.A.D Scientist Framework when she was teaching marketing as a side hustle. She was trying to explain to people how to collect data from their marketing. What tends to happen is people will jump from marketing tactic to tactic.  “People get so hung up on minute tactics that they don't actually sit back and think, my ideal buyer. I'm trying to get them to buy this specific offering. What is the best way to find them, connect with them, build a relationship with them, and invite them to buy from me?” says Nikki. The point is to do it again. This is the basis of test marketing. Experiment in cycles with your hypothesis of how you're going to reach your buyer and pitch to them. Setting up the experiment cycle takes the pressure off.  For example, if you know you will launch a program eight times in a year, you have more room to reach your target and do the tweaks to help you reach your sales goal. The best part of running a business is you get to choose. You can do an incremental increase in your income if you feel like you're going to have a bigger impact. You can say no. You can choose to travel or be location independent. You can choose to have flexibility for your family or yourself. You choose what to do with the money. “I really encourage people to think about what they want to be seen as an expert in and choose a topic that they can speak about for the next five years, consistently,” says Nikki Nash, best selling author and host of Market Your Genius podcast. In today's episode of The Business of You, Nikki shares her tips for creating engaging content that will help your business and personal brand grow.  Nikki explains that her biggest mistake when she first began creating content was not including a call to action. She was not providing a clear way for people to engage with her content, and as a result was unsure of whether her videos were resonating with anyone. As soon as she added a prompt, viewers began to comment on her videos. Nikki shares that her biggest tips for creating successful content are to just get started, to pick a topic that interests you, and to be consistent with your posting schedule.  Tune into this week's episode of The Business of You for a conversation with host Michelle Griffin and special guest Nikki Nash on deciding what type of content to create, how to make that content stand out to your audience, and how to grow your brand and business through content creation.   Quotes • “At our core, all we're really trying to do as human beings is build relationships…whether you're working for yourself or you're working at a company, the other key piece outside of building relationships is your brand, how people perceive you and what your reputation is. One of the amazing things that can happen when you're creating content is you're sharing with the world, ‘Hey here's what I'm an expert on or here's how I want you to perceive me.' And then from there that can turn into relationships or opportunities that can really help you propel your career, propel your business, propel both if you've got a side hustle which is something that's so amazing.” (01:26-02:10)  • “There are so many things that you can do, especially if you're in-house somewhere…When you are looking to position yourself as a go-to expert, you can do things in a number of ways…there are so many things that can fall under content. I started with what could be considered workshops, but I consider that content as well.” (05:11-06:18) • “I really encourage people to think about what they want to be seen as the expert in and choose a topic that they can speak about for the next five years. Consistently. Say I'm going to go all in on being an expert on this.” (10:17-10:30) • “One of the biggest mistakes that I made early on when I shared that nobody was commenting or engaging, I never asked for engagement. I never gave people a reason to engage. But when I started saying things like, ‘If you have a problem, put your problem in the comments below. If you have a question, put it in the comments below. I will answer you.' Then people were like, ‘Oh wow, well I have questions. Let me get answers.' And that can start conversations.” (21:38-22:03) • “When you go into it believing something is hard or that people aren't going to comment, then that's what you attract. So, what I like to do is I see everything as a science experiment. If I'm putting content out in the world and nobody's commenting, liking, engaging, then I sit down and I go okay, well let me see what I did during that piece of content…Did I never ask for a call to action? I like to encourage and train people to get used to commenting before I have a true call to action.” (27:23-28:08) • “The most important thing is to be consistent…Just be consistent. It takes everybody a different amount of time to start getting real traction and start seeing results from putting content out there. Some of the results may happen without you really knowing it for a while. I encourage you to stay consistent. Whatever you choose to stick with, whether it's weekly, monthly, be consistent with it.” (31:02-31:32) • “Tip one: don't overanalyze it. Tip two: just start. Third: nobody is going to beat you up as much as you are. Go into it with the mindset that if what I'm sharing is of value to someone, then it is worth it.” (36:00-36:47)   Connect with Nikki Nash:  GetMoreDreamClients.com Website: https://nikkinash.co LinkedIn: Nikki Nash Podcast: Market Your Genius https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-market-your-genius-podcast/id1461675387 Book: Market Your Genius https://www.amazon.com/Market-Your-Genius-Customers-Community/dp/140196155X Connect with Michelle Griffin, Personal Brand Strategist/Founder, BRANDthority: Website: YourBrandYourBusiness.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michellebgriffin/ Get active on LinkedIn: Join The #365 Creators, my community of 900+ global professionals supporting one another as we create content, connection, and community on LinkedIn. The Published Author Podcast
No Agent, No Followers, But She Still Landed a Book Deal

The Published Author Podcast

Author and marketer Nikki Nash freely admits she didn't follow any advice she was given on how to get an agent and write a book.  A marketing consultant, Nikki tells the Published Author Podcast: “I literally tell people that I manifested my book, because everything people told me about getting a book deal, I did not do any of that!  “I didn't have an agent. I didn't have 50,000 people on my Instagram following me, or on my email list.  “I had a firm belief that this book would be amazing, and that Hay House was going to publish this book. I just went for it.”  Regardless of what you think about how Nikki's book came to be, there's no doubt that determination and hard work played a huge role!  Nikki competed with 100 people to win a Hay House publishing deal. A few months later, she competed with a smaller group of authors and won months of mentoring with Hay House CEO Tracy Reid!  Her book, Market Your Genius, finally comes out in August, 2021. Market Your Genius helps entrepreneurs generate leads and build a community.  Can't find time to write your book? Put it in your calendar   Nikki knew as a child that she'd write a book. However, as an adult and founder of the busy marketing consultancy Nikki Nash, she wasn't sure how she would find time to write.  “It wasn't until I saw this video by Brendon Burchard, a motivational speaker. He said if he looked at your calendar and couldn't tell what your big goals were, then they weren't gonna happen,” Nikki tells show host Josh Steimle.  “I started right then. I just started putting time on my calendar to figure out how I was going to write a book and bring it into the world.”  Getting a Publishing Deal   First, Nikki focused on getting a book deal. After searching online she discovered an article about how to get a publishing deal with Hay House.  “If you attend their Writer's Workshop, they will allow you to submit a book proposal on a specific date and then they choose somebody, one person out of the submissions.”  Nikki and 99 other writers attended the Hay House event. Out of that 100, only Nikki's proposal was selected by Hay House.  How To Create a Book Proposal   Nikki explains that the first step to getting a book deal is having a decent book proposal, which is essentially a business plan for a book.  A book proposal must include:  That there's no other book like it in your industry  Why your book needs to exist  Why you're the person to write your book  Sample chapters  How you will help market your book.    Nikki bought a book proposal course from Bookmama.com and then began writing, completing her proposal non-stop in 48 hours! It can actually It can take months to write a book proposal, and costs up to $20,000 if someone writes your proposal.  After submitting her proposal to Hay House and waiting for months for their decision, Nikki attended another, smaller Hay House event. Here, she competed to win one-on-one mentoring with Tracy Reid.  How To Deal With Writing Challenges Writing the book outline   Nikki's first challenge was completing her book's outline. Her mind was so full of ideas and information she began to feel overwhelmed.  “To push past that, I reached out to people on my email list and posted in Facebook groups. I announced I would write and publish a chapter every week for 90 days. I asked if people were interested in reading an early copy of the book.”  The response was positive, because people really wanted to learn about how to get more clients and more leads.  Writing accountability   Nikki explains: “What I needed was accountability. So what I did was I set up my email system to automatically send out a new email to everybody every week. The email had a link to a Google Doc.  “I made a new Google Doc for every single chapter. Because that Google Doc was going to be emailed to them whether I wrote something in it or not, I knew I didn't want the embarrassment of having a blank document!”  The genius in this idea is that Nikki learned that her book resonated with people, and that the followers formed a group who will help promote the book.  The book writing process   Nikki's Hay House editor wanted to see one chapter at a time, but Nikki couldn't write like this and instead just wanted to get the whole book down into a document. Her editor agreed to this change. Then followed an extended period of editing, with drafts moving back and forth, lasting around May 2021.  How To Use Your Book To Grow Your Business   Nikki says her book will reach many more people than she'll be able to work with in her career. Those readers could sign up for her newsletter or courses, and some will even become clients.  The book launch itself is another business opportunity, bringing about a new discussion point for newsletters, podcasts, and even client updates.  Next, Hay House will pitch Nikki and her book to various forms of media. She'll focus on adding value to her audience, but of course will have an opportunity to mention her book, which gives her credibility in her industry.  If you liked this episode and show notes you'll find these episodes useful:  Scott Schrober Publicized His Books With Local Speaking Gigs and Won New Business  Michelle Tillis Lederman On The Personalized Approach To PR For Book Marketing  LINKS  Twitter  LinkedIn   SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts.
