When I first met Markian at USC through UCLA’s entrepreneurship club, he seemed like a nice, hardworking guy. I would have never expected that he had such a serious following. But he does have a serious following, and he’s serious about the business of being an influencer. While most might see influencers as frivolous, Markian sees entrepreneurs that can transform personal brands into businesses. Influencer marketing, which started as a $1.7 billion industry in 2016, is projected to grow to $6.5 billion this year alone. Hey everyone! After taking a break over the holidays, we’re ready to get back into our study of the Gospel of Mark. This Sunday we’ll be reading Mark 14:53-72 – and the drama has really intensified.After being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is taken to the High Priest’s palace where he will experience his first trial. But Mark does a “meanwhile” segue, picking up Peter’s location, which is in the courtyard outside the trial. He’ll come back to Peter at the end of the section, so it’s another Markian sandwich…meaning we’re supposed to connect the two stories.We’ll cover some of the ways in which this trial before the Sanhedrin was preformed illegally. It’s amazing, isn’t it, how far religious systems are willing to violate God’s own values in order to maintain power. I think there’s a lesson in that.Why do you suppose Jesus doesn’t answer any of the false accusations made against him? How would you be tempted to respond, if people misrepresented you this way?At the end of the trial, the veil is finally lifted and Jesus plainly self-identifies as God’s Messiah. It offends the High Priest so much that he tears his robes. Here’s a fun insight: read Lev 21:10 – it seems the High Priest wasn’t too well acquainted with the Law he was supposed to be upholding.Jesus stood quietly confident before the highest ruling authority in Israel – but at the end of the story, Peter caves under the pressure of one person. Who was that person, and what sort of authority would that person have in a patriarchal society such as 1st Century Israel? What differences do you note? What might Peter have done differently that night? When have you felt like Peter during times of pressure from this broken world?Hopefully, we will be both encouraged and challenged by this study. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. This Sunday we’ll be starting chapter 14 as we continue on in our study of the gospel of Mark. We’ll be reading the first 11 verses.This will be another Markian sandwich – where one event is tucked in between two other, connected events. In this case, it’s the plotting of Jesus’ arrest and execution surrounding an account of a woman performing an extravagant act of devotion and worship of Jesus.We’ll consider it a contrast of loves.As we consider the “bread” of this sandwich – the plot to kill Jesus and then initialization of it by Judas – what do you think these characters love, which would motivate them to do such an insidious deed?The woman does something altogether different. Obviously, we live in a different culture, so some things are hard to understand in this. Pouring oil on a guy’s head wouldn’t go over quite so well in our culture (at least since the 1950’s). In that time and culture, taking baths wasn’t something a person had the opportunity to do as often as we do. People would quickly develop a certain odoriferousness (funk) about them. So, this sort of thing was a welcome way to put a sheen on the hair and diffuse the pungency of human odor.The point is, it was a good thing – and not only that – it was costly to her. Clearly, Jesus is the object of her love, which prompts her actions. How would you describe her action? What does it teach us about how our own love for Jesus is demonstrated?Jesus interprets her act as a forecast of his coming death. How would his death and her sacrificial devotion be connected to each other?Jesus declared that this woman would always be remembered. Interestingly, Judas would also be forever remembered, but not in such reverential ways. Think of all the contrasts you can of what the woman is remembered for compared to what Judas is remembered for.The core question if this text is: Who do you want to be?Click here for the PDF of this week’s PowerPoint images.

You know what the phrase “I’m at the end of my rope” means, right? It is a descriptive way of emphasizing that one is out of options, there’s nothing left to try. That’s a place most of us spend our lives trying to avoid. We work hard to make life predictable and secure. The problem is, things go stupid. Sometimes so stupid it is beyond our grasp to fix things. Try as we do, there is nothing that we can find in this world that will make us immune to the troubles of this broken world.This Sunday we’ll be reading Mark 5:21-43, and we’ll read about two different characters who are at the end of their ropes. It will be another Markian sandwich – something Mark is prone to do. We’ll find a story within a story. As you read the text, try to list off all the ways in which the two characters who interact with Jesus are different from each other. For instance, one is a man, the other a woman. Keep in mind the purity code of the Mosaic Law as it concerned this woman. Remember how important the Synagogue was to Israelites in the 1st century. Once you’ve got a good picture in your mind about how different these two are, start looking at what is the same about them? What is it that brings them to the same place?What can that tell us about those times when we are at the end of our rope? What is it that stops Jesus to ask who touched him? What do you think Jesus meant when he told the woman that her faith had made her well again? What does Jesus say to Jairus when the news comes about his daughter?What does God seem to be looking for from us in our times of trouble? What does trusting God in difficult times look like to you?Looking forward to digging into this on Sunday – hope to see you there!

One of my favorite types of humor is mistaken identity, like the Flight of the Conchords song “Jenny”. The confusion and delightful misdirection as the mis-identified man tries to sort through the woman’s description of their relationship. I never get tired of that video. Mistaken identity like that can be fun – but usually when someone defines our identity improperly, it takes a heavy toll.We’ll be reading about people mis-identifying Jesus in our text this week as we continue our study in Mark’s gospel. We’ll be reading 3:20-35, which will finish up the chapter.In this section, Jesus’ family and the religious leaders from Jerusalem define Jesus as either crazy or demonic. The two groups of people who were most qualified to identify who Jesus is completely fail to do so.This passage has a chiastic structure and is an example of Mark’s way of framing one episode with another…in other words, we will be enjoying a Markian sandwich this Sunday!

Markian Sich joins the show today to some specific things you can do to benefit yourself and your legacy as a member of the military. With VA loans, the government has put some things in place that many people may not know about. Markian talks about how he discovered real estate, the formation of his company, and the goals they’re trying to achieve for active service military members.   Key Takeaways:   [2:45] Markian is a third generation immigrant from Ukraine. While growing up in Ukraine, he always admired how cool America was, which planted the seeds for his return (so he could figure out why America was the way it was). He joined the Navy, commissioned as a Marine, and went to flight school. [6:00] He actually found real estate during active duty when he was looking for an additional source of income to support his travel to France to visit his wife. He read Rich Dad, Poor Dad, listened to podcasts, and found real estate at the same time as online business. [9:13] He wrote Military House Hacking as a manifesto for military guys on how to succeed. This was also to help military members transition successfully as well back into the real world. [12:55] Markian doesn’t remember the exact set of circumstances that led to him being involved in real estate, but he did come across it while looking for something that was going to help him earn some passive income. His first property was a rental property in Georgia, that he bought with his parents. His parents’ financial strategy was actually a goal that he wanted to emulate. [19:00] Markian shares the story of his and his parents hunting for their first property to purchase together. They partnered together — he was the brains, his mom was the people person, and his dad was the money guy. It was quite a doozy! [23:45] He got one of his first big rentals (a multi-unit apartment complex) through a “support group” of people like him who went to meet-ups and helped each other find properties. He made a video and his parents wrote letters to the property owner explaining why they wanted the property. One of the biggest takeaways from the early deals is the importance of persistence. [31:45] With this multi-unit apartment property, their cash flow was going to be about $8000-$10,000 per month. It was fully renovated, and the rent on each unit was about $650. All the numbers checked out, and this multi-unit property was going to help them establish their legacy. [36:20] Markian talks about the financing of the property, and also future plans for this property. [39:55] Active Duty Passive Income is a website that Markian started while he was going through the trials of his first few properties. It started as writings and videos, and now it’s turned into a social network that provides advice and mentorship. [41:55] The strategy they teach is that while you’re in the military, you should be buying, selling, and refinancing homes (smartly!) at every duty station using your VA loan, because it’s a 0% down. A VA loan is a Veterans Affair loan that allows you to buy a house that you intend to live in for 0% out of pocket. There are many other benefits of using a VA loan. [46:33] One of the biggest fears they’ve encountered is that service members are worried about falling into debt during a market downturn. When you’re getting into a property, you have to make sure the numbers make sense. Look both backward and forward to ensure that it will still provide cash flow if the market changes.
