Nothing lasts forever, so we do what we can to make things last. And yet the more we enjoy something, the more painful it is when it ends. It all comes down to risk and reward trade-offs. Do you regret the risks you don't take? Do you take the risk knowing that you'll feel sad when something wonderful comes to an end? These questions speak deeply to your risk personality. On this final episode of IQ4U Dr. James Norrie and Dr. Tamara Schwartz reflect on the many ways our risk personality influences our lives. But don't feel too disappointed, the journey continues in June when Tammy launches her new podcast – WMD: Weapons of Mass Disruption.

Phone.com keeps it simple on-top while adding muscle below “People are going to work smarter, they are going to use technology in a way that is effective for themselves, and their organizations, says Joel Maloff, Senior Vice President/Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) at Phone.com. In this podcast Maloff offers a look at how one of the cloud’s pioneering firms is exploring new ground both in platforms in use and verticals being served. Phone.com started with the smallest businesses looking for communication and soon began selling to larger firms as well through channel partners. Today Phone.com is migrating much of their services to AWS cloud, a step the company feels is in keeping with its model of providing firms of many sizes the most up to date set of services. Through all the changes that have occurred to the market, Phone.com continues to keep a simple message and model face forward to the users, while adding muscle, more powerful capabilities below. In this way Phone.com has mirrored the thinking that has brought us more sophisticated devices that don’t require a user manual. Now, Maloff reports, Phone.com is moving beyond conferencing that’s simply thrown up based on what’s available to providing HIPPA compliant telehealth. As we look at 2021, Maloff offers a message of opportunity and progress as Phone.com continues to partner with its channel team to invent and customize solutions for customers, with a company big enough to take on complex projects but small enough to offer individualized service and offerings. Part 2 of the conversation with legendary restauranteur and entrepreneur PHIL ROMANO. The man behind Fuddruckers, Eatzi's, Trinity Groves, Nick and Sam's, The Network Bar and dozens more. We focus on the economics and the investment behind Fuddruckers and how he turned a $15k investment into a $3.4m payout in just two and a half years. "It's called Lateral Integration: I make a disease and then I fix the disease to lessen the sin." - Phil Romano We talk about his investment in an idea for a new product that would go on to save millions of lives. He invested just $250k and turned that into hundreds of millions of dollars just a few years later. He has made many people famous for not getting into investments with him that paid out very well. One even had a nervous break down. "It's hard to invest in other peoples ideas because I always had the best ideas." - Phil Romano We talk about his value system and bill of rights, and how he uses this premise to build and manage his businesses and his personal life. He has five base values that he uses over and over that works for him. We dive into the economics of the Trinity Grove project, and how it is creating the new generation of restaurant concepts, owners and operators. "The accountant and attorney and everyone around me told me not to do it. That turned into an $800 million payoff." - Phil Romano We also talk about the latest concept The Network Bar, and how it is designed to bridge the gap between millennials and the business folks who have "been there and done that". Phil talks about how the concept was originally conceived and what it ended up turning into and what the future looks like for it. From mobsters to kings to arms dealers and judges to councilmen to speakeasys, country clubs and exclusive means clubs, Phil has seen it all. He has prepared meals for kings and he knows how to get maximum publicity doing it and he is the man behind the greatest hamburger. Phil has continually evolved his ideas and concepts from membership only spots to open kitchens and locks on the door - and he continues to do that today with the Network Bar and Trinity Groves. Phil believes that the fear of failure is much more powerful than the sweet smell of success. He knows that people don’t want the same thing, they want something different. He knows what they want before they do. He has created concepts that have been replicated over and over. He has done more to pioneer the lifestyle and experiences we see in so many restaurants and bars today. Whether it is the open kitchen concepts (NAGS HEAD PUB) were you can see your meal being prepared, or the food being brought to your table for you to see it before it is cooked. He is also the man behind the salad bar and putting locks on his doors and creating members only concepts. Phil knew people would pay to have their pictures on the wall, they would buy mugs with their name on it, they would pay to inscribe their names in the bar. He knew they would pay for memberships (ROMANOS 300) before the concept ever opened. At one concept (THE KEY HOLE), he put a padlock on the door and sold thousands of keys to open the lock. He knew that business men wanted to meet (THE NETWORK BAR) and eat at places that other business men were at. He knew that the experience and lifestyle is what people wanted and he knew and still knows how to deliver on that idea.

Ben Davis the founder of The Gents Place will tell future entrepreneurs to stop waiting, there are no excuses, just do it... the worst case is you will fail and you will learn and try again. You have to believe that failure is part of your success story. In 2008, 25 year old Ben Davis decided to start his business, and to start a business at the highest price point in the area. The economy was crashing, he had no experience in the barbershop business, his son had just had open heart surgery and he had no money. But he left a great job working for a great boss to do his thing, to be the business man he knew he wanted to be. Ben will tell you, that you have to jump in without hesitation, that you cannot let fear paralyze you and dictate your future. Ben jumped head first into a traditional barbershop industry, that he knew very little about, except that he didn't like it the way it was. He brought his interest in the experiential economy to a traditional business and created a new lifestyle brand approach to a boring and sometimes dreaded haircut experience. His brand is about looking good and feeling good and that is key to you feeling and being successful. He believes you are never fully dressed without great hair. The Gents Place is much more than just a haircut, it is a lifestyle of success. BONUS: Ben talks about Jerry Jones (Dallas Cowboys owner) as an investor in The Gents Place versus Mark Cuban (Dallas Mavericks Owner) and both billionaires. For several months I have been thinking about doing an episode about disruption and change in regards to companies like Toys R Us and Blockbuster. At first I was just going to do a tear down on why went wrong with Toys R Us but it was so negative I didn't want to do just that. I wasn't sure how I could balance it until recently, when I heard Ellen Barker the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Texas Instruments talk about this subject in regards to Texas Instruments. It was a story I didn't know at all. From my narrow outsider perspective I thought Texas Instruments had grown smaller and irrelevant over the years, when in fact they are an impressive example of change and avoiding disruption to their business. They are far from obsolete, they have tripled their revenue and become very profitable by focusing more on some of the lesser known products and what they are truly great at.

We talk to Nima Khanghahi about BUILDING YOUR BRAND AND INFLUENCE. Nima is just getting started on his new career path of speaking and influencing, he has been a sales coach and trainer... and, I personally think he is a natural at it and has a bright future ahead of him. “As soon as we start moving in the direction we want to, doors open…”  - Nima Khanghahi Nima believes in three core principles when it comes to building your brand and influence; Showing Up, Documenting Versus Creating and Elevating Others. When I saw Nima present these principles to a room of at least 50 people and saw his very interactive style, I knew I needed to have him on the show. He has a way of engaging with people in a meaningful way, whether is one on one, or a large group of people. His first principle of Showing Up, is something I believe in and is one of the first pieces of advices I give to people for just about everything. When we talk about showing up, we are talking about something you do in a consistent and intentional way. You are present, you are giving your full attention. Just by showing up you will often uncover new opportunities and be ahead of your competition. As an example of showing up, I went to an event the other day that had hundreds of top business folks in the local area. This is my ideal audience. These are the type of people I work with and need to build long lasting partnerships with. Let me break down what showing up meant to me in this case: I showed up early. I was there before the big crowd, I could make some early new friends before the mad rush started. I scoped out the place for friendly faces. I looked for faces I wanted to meet, and I made several introductions. I was introduced to several new contacts, some of which I have met with again since then. I showed up with intent and a focus. I knew why I was there and what I wanted to accomplish. I set goals in my head and made sure I accomplished those goals. I didn’t waste time doing things that didn’t accomplish those goals. I had a positive attitude. If you go into a situation like this and treat it like a complete beat down, people will catch on to that vibe. If you go in with a positive attitude, people will react much more positively to you. I closed the deal. I stayed afterwards until I checked off a few more goals. I met the keynote speaker and a couple of award nominee’s and winners. I met several new faces that were on my list. But, more than anything, this action created more opportunities, because people introduced me to other people that I will do business with in the future. Maybe I will help them, maybe they will help me. I did see a couple of people I know there that were obviously struggling to get out there and meet people. Hiding in a dark corner of the room, frozen by that voice telling them all the excuses of why they shouldn’t be there. Remember that action begets more action, getting out there leads to opportunities that you would otherwise never get. The second core principle Nima talks about is Documenting Versus Creating. The idea here is that we have so many excuses, we ended convincing ourselves to never start. We end up never starting on our journey or doing that thing that will take us to the next level. As soon as you start thinking of what you must do to create something new, your brain freaks out and starts putting up all sorts of road blocks. Instead of saying, “I am going to CREATE my own podcast.” You say, “I am going to DOCUMENT my thoughts and message on the web.” Just changing the word from CREATE to DOCUMENT, your brain will put up less defense and you are more likely to get started. My very first episode was me telling myself something very similar. I started a podcast in less than week after I decided to do it. If I listen to my brain and all the excuses, I would never have started and never created a podcast. The third principle Nima talks about is, Elevating Others. On the show this week he talks about a touching and interesting story of how a simple act of elevating somebody that most people never think about or even notice turned into something much bigger. In this age of social media, giving and not taking is more important than ever before. If you hold your hand out there to take, you are going to have a tough time getting anywhere and you will disappear quickly. If you take the approach of give, give, give… then things will happen by default. This is another form elevating others. If you walk into every discussion or meeting with someone, just looking for what is in it for you… you will struggle. You will find it hard to build a long term meaningful relationship with those people. You will find it difficult to get others to look at you as a partner or a trusted advisor. Mark Twain said “Keep away from the people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Don’t be the small person in this quote. When you elevate others, magic happens, ideas and thoughts form that make things even greater. Treat people around how you would want to be treated. It is not a complicated notion. SHOW NOTES Nima KhanGhahi is a passionate sales coach, leadership trainer and speaker that focuses on developing and influencing people to maximize their full potential.  With the help of many mentors and leaders he has been able to learn and teach many strategies that have taken people to the next level. Why do we get a shirt and other cool branded items when we start a company but have to beg for them after we get the job?  The people we are hiring have more information that ever before. They are more sophisticated and are asking different questions and they have different expectations than in the past. On this episode we will be talking about career changing moments and making the decision for change. We will talk about why you probably should change your career now, or get out of a job you don't like. We will also talk about how to make the decision to change and how to find that next opportunity. I myself have made a major career move recently and we will talk about that today too. The odds of you making a significant change in your career is 9 to 1. Look around you, out of the ten people closest to you, only one of them is going to actually make a change and take that leap forward. Only one of you is going to seize the moment and make your own decision to change. Only one of you will choose to excel. Only one of you will be running on that treadmill in the gym in a couple of months. Will that be you? Or them? Today we will look at the three questions you need to ask yourself to really evaluate where you are at in your career. Should I stay or should I go? But first we will look at the three steps you need to effectively reach your goals and build a foundation for change. Before we get into career change, lets talk about change in general, and how to build the foundation for you to make the right changes in your life and in your career. The great poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou said "People will forget what you say, people will forget what you do, but they wont forget how you made them feel." It is much more to evoke a feeling with a visual than it is with a list of bullets. I take this presentation approach to setting goals. Most people will tell you to write down your goals, that doesn't work for me. When I write my goals down I feel like I am giving the responsibility away to the list, to the pen and paper. Writing them down doesn't work for me. I forget my goals as soon as I wright them down. Anyone that has worked with knows that my presentations tend to look more like infographics and rarely have bullet points. So how do I plan and reach my goals. Three steps. I SEE my goal in my head, I visualize what it looks like. Once I have that picture, I then have to BELIEVE in it. And, then when I have done that, I do what it takes to MAKE IT HAPPEN. SEE. BELEIVE. MAKE IT HAPPEN. Check out the complete episode to see how I made this work for to meet Mark Cuban. Most are familiar with, please upload your resume here, now upload it here in a different format, ok now enter all the information on your resume in this page, ok now, enter that same information in again in a different way. Then when you get the call for an interview, please bring your resume with you. Then the recruiters start calling and asking you the same questions you have already answered online and the opportunity is not even a close fit. The bottom line is that is difficult, challenging and certainly no fun to get out there and start looking for a new job. Many of us are able to use our networks to find the next opportunity. It has been so many years since I have used an online site to find a job, I can't remember ever doing it. It may have been 20 years ago since I needed to do that. But, my experience is mostly dealing with emails and phones calls on a near daily basis from recruiters with opportunities. On the plus side, I guess I always have the comfort of knowing there is demand for my skills, but on the other side it just becomes white noise. Very few recruiters have ever gotten my attention.  Again, my opportunities have come via my network. As someone that hires talent on occasion, I know that hiring people via my network or the networks of those I respect around me often uncovers the best talent anyway. So I know from both sides of the hiring equation that maintaining an up to date profile on line is very important. It used to be, you just had to maintain a LinkedIn profile. When I first started using LinkedIn, like many of us, I basically mimicked the resume format on LinkedIn. While LinkedIn has made many improvements over time, I think adding an attachment to your work history is the only real change since the beginning of LinkedIn. I look forward to seeing what can happen in this space as LinkedIn continues to improve. In this weeks episode of the podcast, I sit down with a veteran of the HR and Recruiting world, William Tincup and we talk about the modern tools and techniques of attracting talent and building a strong pipeline of resources. It's not just LinkedIn and Facebook that recruiters are looking at these days. They are looking at everything you have ever done online. They are looking anywhere you have a profile, even Tinder in many cases. Have you written articles online? Have you commented on other people's stuff? They are looking at all of that. Often just leaving a comment or a "like" in the right place will get you noticed by a recruiter. PROTIP when you are doing research on a job or person go onto linked and connect with people who worked there or at that place and talk to them. There are not any rules or laws that stop you from doing your research. Once I started my website and started posting regularly on my LinkedIn profile, the number of people following me increased and many new recruiters found me. And often, its not just recruiters it is other people that are looking for the right people to work with. Today everyone is a recruiter. Having a podcast definitely brings a different level of attention. I have had amazing opportunities present themselves because of the new connections I have made via my podcast. In this weeks episode we cover three important points that are worth repeating here. First, everything you do is part of your online profile. When you are posting and commenting on random content just imagine that someone is out there collecting that information and creating a dossier of you. There are apps that aggregate all your content and compile for future employers to look at. Second, tools like LinkedIn can also be super effective for doing your research on the people you will be meeting in a job interview. Do your research and find people that have worked at the company that is trying to get you to make a move. Find people that have worked with your potential coworkers, especially the management. Third, companies and employers spend a lot of money and effort to attract new attention and to look appealing to potential candidates. But, unfortunately most companies don't spend enough effort when people leave. When people are exiting it is as important, if not maybe more important, of a time to make sure they leave on good terms and with good things to say about the company. Remember, if you are worried about big brother watching you... just imagine that your next employer is watching you now. If you are not a marketer or work with marketing folks, you are probably not aware of the importance of authenticity. Companies are constantly challenged with finding ways to connect in a genuine and meaningful way. Some brands, like Nike and Apple have mastered the art of authenticity when it comes to representing their brands. The marketing landscape is evolving more now and quicker than it ever has before, and the customers are getting smarter and aware of the products around them. You can't just throw dollars at your brand... you have to connect with customers. Today I sit down with the Head of Data and Analytics at PMG, Dustin Engel and we walk through the recent history of Beats and how it went up against the big boys and eventually became one of them. We talk about the difference some companies make and why they understand how to make that connection better than others. Apple has spent less money on advertising for their phones and iTunes than their competitors, and they have focused that money on experience. Store experiences. How do you make the store a part of the sales process? Apple has a unique way of making the shopping experience authentic, Apple has figured out to charge people premium prices and have created a luxury brand that is being consumed by the masses. They have bucked traditional trends of focusing on premium customers with higher margins and leaving the lower margin customers behinds. If customer experience is about delivering a consistent experience, then many companies have proven that. Where do these leaders fear disruption? What does Apple see on the horizon? What are they seeing around the next corner? SHOW NOTES Dustin Engel is the leader of the Advanced Media Team (data activated media) and the Analytics and Data Science Team at PMG Advertising Agency. In this episode we talk about his journey from aspiring Marine Biologist to a career in Digital Marketing. In 2011 Microsoft was still recovering from all of the windows 7 backlash and just having released windows phone 7 operating system and the Kinect was new and the Xbox 360 was new and that is also when they partnered with Nokia. There was a massive amount of criticism being hurled at Microsoft for not being focused and acquiring companies and not integrating them into the core business. Do you remember that time? It was 2011 just four years after Apple changed everything with their release of the iPhone. In todays episode we will talk to the Head of North American Operations at the time Nicki Purcell, currently the Chief Digital Office at Dallas Morning News, about that time in the two companies history. Remember Vine the app that killed the Microsoft phone? Remember when we said we would never buy a $500 phone or a $1000 phone... remember when you got into someone's car and they were texting through their car interface? Remember wireless (or is it cordless) charging... Nokia was cutting edge... I and many other fans of their hardware loved it, and Microsoft with them was a dream come true... the dream team that was going to take down Apple. But in reality if you look at the numbers, it was not good from the beginning... sure the hardware was amazing, that camera, those pictures, the icons that actually gave you information... but Microsoft and Nokia partnered after Nokia had lost half of its phone market in the previous 12 months, Microsoft has lots much more than half of the market in the same time frame, they needed to do something, while the partnership did boost Microsoft's numbers slightly and produced some of best devices ever, Nokia never regained its dominance - out of necessity Microsoft made the choice to buy the company so it retain control and stop Nokia from moving to Android or other options that were not Microsoft - many have considered the final nail in Steve Ballmer's coffin that finally led to a succession by Satya Nadella. Now today looking at the massive success that Satya has brought to Microsoft and the focus on business users, what would have happened if Satya had more influence earlier and Microsoft set its sights on a company like Blackberry instead? Makes more sense in hind site... maybe we will dissect that in a future episode. SHOW NOTES Nicki Purcell Chief Digital Officer of Dallas Morning News and previous Head of Operations for North America at Nokia. Nicki loves a good comeback story, and she will dive right into an opportunity to help turn a company around. She is passionate about technology and how it can be used to seamlessly improve people's lives. AI.  When Tom and I sat down we spent a lot of the conversation on AI in a way that will help you develop a perspective or help inform your perspective on the subject matter. We also talk about personal brand and balancing that with the professional brand and the importance of having a perspective and sharing that perspective. This conversation is going to be a two part set of episodes, this week we will focus on the AI perspective, Machine Learning, IOT and Digital Assistants. Part 2 will be next weeks episode (#120) when we talk about balancing the personal and professional brand and the competitive edge it will get you, as well help you build a better stronger circle around you that will intern make you better in the long run. Not everything we talk about always gets into the episode and often there are some nuggets of perspective about other topics like this one that I can bring into the dialogue later. TWO LESSONS YOU WILL TAKE AWAY TODAY 1. Machine Learning is human coded algorithms that drive some sort of decision process, like what gets populated in your Netflix queue or how articles are posted in your various social feeds. 2. For many years companies have been keenly focused on driving revenue and continually improving their established value streams to stay relevant. Companies used to be around for decades with little impact from technology and a steep ramp up cycle that protected them from competitors. Over the last few years the rapid advancement of technology has turned everything on its head. Companies can become irrelevant over night and startups pop up every day that challenge companies that are still moving slow and are held back by old tech and old strategies. This new digital world is creating disruption through out industries everyday. So, what does Digital Transformation mean? A quick search on Google will return plenty of articles containing the terms digital transformation or some version of it. But, are we all defining it the same way? I have found that while the term is quite popular and companies have even allocated resources to transformation or disruption, each company I talk to has a different definition of what they mean and often within the same company or team there is disagreement. Is it digital transformation a strategy? Is it only relevant to startups? Does it apply to an industry or a vertical? Is it a new name for enterprise improvement? Is it about enabling innovation? Is it adopting new technology? Is it all these things? But, are these the questions we should be asking? Are we asking the right questions? Would it be more accurate to ask if digital transformation is real? Or is this just semantics at this point? I sit down with Strategy and Innovation Director William Oellerman and talk about what Digital Transformation means and how that applies to so many things around us.
