Dan Ciporin ’86 is a general partner at Canaan, an early-stage venture capital firm. He partners with startups to deliver innovation particularly in the areas of financial technology, e-commerce, and marketplaces. Dan joined Canaan after serving as Chairman and CEO of Shopping.com, where he took the company public after leading it from zero to over $100 million in revenue in five years and then sold it to Ebay. Prior to that he was Senior VP of MasterCard International running their global debit program. Dan earned an A.B. from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and an M.B.A. from Yale School of Management in 1986. Michelle Kwon '20 is a second-year student in Yale SOM's full-time MBA program.   Alex W. ‘Pete’ Hart is the Chairman of the Board of Verifone Systems a credit card terminal payment systems company and financial services industry veteran.    With a 50-year distinguished track record of leadership in the financial services industry, Pete has acted as a consultant specializing in emerging payment and distribution systems. His particular focus is e-commerce and its impact on the consumer banking industry. Pete was the former CEO of Advanta Corporation, a diversified financial services company and the President and Chief Executive Officer of MasterCard International. While at MasterCard, he served as Chairman of the Board of Maestro International, the global debit-system, and was a member of the board of directors of Europay International. He was a key member of the Silicon Valley Bancshares Board of Directors starting in 2001 and also became the Chairman of the Board of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) Financial Group. Prior to joining MasterCard, Pete spent 10 years at First Interstate Bancorp, the 17-state multi-bank holding company which is now part of Wells Fargo. While with First Interstate, he became the founding chairman of the board of the CIRRUS System, which is now the world’s largest network of shared automated teller machines. Pete’s distinguished career also includes various positions with the First National Bank of Chicago and BancOhio. Mr. Joel S. Lisker was most recently the Senior Vice-President for Security and Risk Management for MasterCard International. In this capacity he served as the company's world-wide senior security representative for all matters relating to the fraudulent use of its numerous card products. He was instrumental in developing technical solutions and strategies to thwart the efforts of organized crime, and as head of Corporate Security with responsibility for safeguarding MasterCard employees, premises, and property throughout the world, he ensured the safety and security of its' human and physical assets, without incident. At MasterCard, he led the development of chip-based biometrics solutions for data security, perimeter security, visitor screening and employee authentication. After completion of his formal education at the University of Pennsylvania (B.S.) and the Temple University School of Law (J.D.), he joined the FBI as a Special Agent where he worked against domestic terrorist groups. Thereafter, as a Special Agent Supervisor, assigned to FBI Headquarters, he developed sophisticated solutions to safeguard FBI communications between FBI Headquarters and its' overseas offices. He also developed techniques used in foreign counter-intelligence operations. Next, Mr. Lisker served as Senior trial Attorney in the U.S. Dept. of Justice Criminal Division, Internal Security section where he directed a task force operating against domestic terrorists, and led a group seeking to discover and control foreign agents. In 1981, Mr. Lisker was selected by the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, to be Chief Counsel and Staff Director of its' newly formed Sub-Committee on security and Terrorism. In this capacity, in addition to managing the Committee's oversight and Authorization responsibility for the FBI, the DEA and the U.S. Marshal Service, he organized more than 25 hearings aimed at uncovering the global terrorist inter-connections and transnational operations that became known as the "terror network". Mr. Lisker was also responsible for drafting legislation with respect to protecting identities of covert agents, jurisdictional realignment of authority regarding escaped federal prisoners and other fugitives from justice, criminalization of payments card fraud and counterfeit, amendment of legislation relating to agents of foreign principals, etc. In each of his roles and in the responsibilities he was required to carry out over the years Mr. Lisker has maintained regular contact with counterparts in the FBI and those reporting to the Director of Central Intelligence. In 1987, Mr. Lisker was selected as Associate Counsel to the Senate select Committee on Secret Military Assistance to Iran and the Nicaraguan Opposition. One of his major accomplishments in this assignment was the uncovering and tracing of clandestine funding sources, through the Swiss banking Network. Mr. Lisker is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a life member of the FBI Agents Association, The Association of Former Agents of the FBI. He serves on several corporate Boards of Directors and Advisory Boards and is currently serving on two FBI industry Task Forces dealing with Terrorist Financing and Identity Theft. Patrick focuses on venture growth equity, consumer, Internet, and mobile investments. He is a director of Loopt and Realtime Worlds, and is actively involved with 23andMe, Xoom and the firm's venture growth activities. Prior to joining NEA, Patrick helped to grow ZEFER, an Internet services firm (acquired by NEC) to more than $100 million in annual revenues and more than 700 people across six global offices. The company attracted over $100 million in venture capital financing. Prior to ZEFER, Patrick was with McKinsey & Company, where he specialized in hardware, software, and services companies. Patrick received a joint JD-MBA degree from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School, where he was the only candidate in his year to earn honors at both. He also served as an Editor of the Harvard Law Review. Patrick was one of only nine Canadian citizens to be elected a Commonwealth Scholar to study at Oxford University, where he earned a Master of Science degree and won both class prizes for Best Dissertation and Best Overall Performance. Patrick earned his A.B. degree at Harvard University in Environmental Science. He is a member of the New York and Massachusettsbars. Maria Cirino, Co-Founder and Managing Director, .406 Ventures Maria is co-founder and managing director of .406 Ventures, a new VC firm focused on early stage investments in security, IT, and services. She serves as an active investor, director and/or chairman in one public company and four venture-backed companies including Verecode and Bit9. Maria brings 21 years of entrepreneurial, operating and senior management experience in venture-backed technology companies. Most recently, she served as an SVP of Verisign following its 2005 $142 million acquisition of Guardenta Sequoia, Charles River Ventures and NEA-backed IT security company that she co-founded and led as CEO and Chairman. In this role, Maria received several industry honors and awards, including "Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003." Prior to Guardent, Maria was Senior Vice President responsible for sales and marketing at i-Cube, an IT services company, which was acquired in 1999 by Razorfish for $1.8 billion. Prior to Razorfish, she was responsible for North American sales at Shiva, the category creating network infrastructure company from 1993 to 1997. Mark McGovern, Tech Lead, In-Q-Tel Mark McGovern leads the communications and infrastructure practice for In-Q-Tel, the strategic investment firm that supports the U.S. Intelligence Community. He has extensive experience developing, securing and deploying data systems. Prior to joining In-Q-Tel, Mr. McGovern was Director of Technology for Cigital Inc. He led Cigital's software security group and supported a Fortune 100 clientele that included Microsoft, MasterCard International, CitiBank, Symantec, CheckFree, the UK National Lottery and the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond, New York and Boston.
