We discuss what is known about the possible health and other benefits for drinkers from  temporarily abstaining from alcohol.  This includes who temporary abstinence may or may not be suitable for and implications for understanding drinking and alcohol addiction or dependence. Professor Matt Field is a Professor of Psychology specialising in addiction at the University of Sheffield. He has published extensively on a range of addiction related topics including evaluations of Dry January, and is involved in ongoing research on the subject.

Matt Field thrives off every form of racing. However not only is Matt a talented driver, Matt is also a technician, fabricator, engine builder, driver & team owner. Matt has accelerated his drift career as a pro driver and business owner as in 2013, he opened the garage doors to The Drift Cave a motorsports/fabrication shop located in Silicon Valley - San Jose, CA.When he first got behind the wheel he competed in grassroots events and gained his Formula Drift license through the Just Drift series in '09. Since then Matt has been a proud supporter of the sport; giving back to local organizations, and offering driving instruction, event judging and car setup advice to other drivers.

Everything from Matt Pailes to Basquiat is stuffed into this episode which I would categorize more of two old bro's catching up. There are two competing paradigms attempting to explain the phenomena of addiction: Addiction as compulsion and addiction as choice. The compulsion model describes addiction as a brain disease in which alcohol and drug use cause neuroadaptations, resulting in uncontrolled drug seeking behavior. The choice model describes addiction as pathology of reinforcement that is contextually dependent upon the availability of meaningful and rewarding alternatives in the choice environment. Dr. Matt Field describes each model and their respective bodies of research. Dr. Matt Field is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at University of Sheffield.

Dry January is the annual effort to give up alcohol for the first 31 days of the year.  There are Dry January campaigns around the world but it is particularly popular in the UK. According to the group Alcohol Concern, 5 million Britons took part in Dry January last year. The goal is to reset your relationship with alcohol. Matt Field will be taking part in Dry January this year as he has in past years. He is a professor of psychology at the University of Liverpool and an expert on addiction. Professor Field is a fan of the annual effort and he says it almost certainly has short-term benefits. However, he says it's not entirely clear Dry January changes our relationship with alcohol in a lasting way. Prof. Matt Field is here to discuss the topic of alcohol abuse and addiction, and it's relationship to mental health. So, what exactly is the difference between alcohol abuse and addiction? Does alcohol addiction run in families, and who is most susceptible? We discuss the alcohol paradox; that is, why people in deprived communities have higher levels of alcohol-related ill health than people in non-deprived communities, despite drinking the same amounts of alcohol. We discover why stopping drinking is only half the battle in overcoming alcohol addiction. What you can do, as a friend or relative, to help somebody with a drinking problem. What the government could - but seemingly won't - do to help reduce the amount of alcohol related harm. We also tackle the most controversial question of all: whether or not is alcohol addiction a brain disease or a disorder of choice?
