In today's episode, we dive into the delicate relationship between anxiety and success. Often viewed as a disorder, anxiety can actually serve as a powerful catalyst for achievement when properly managed. However, left unchecked, it can morph into a debilitating force. Episode Highlights:The Gift of Anxiety: Contrary to popular belief, anxiety isn't always debilitating. When channeled effectively, it can fuel motivation, sharpen focus, and enhance performance. Individuals experiencing anxiety may find themselves becoming more detail-oriented, driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence.Achieving Goals: Anxiety can act as a driving force behind goal attainment. The fear of failure inherent in anxiety often compels individuals to push themselves beyond their limits, striving to reach new heights of success.Discipline and Determination: Those who struggle with anxiety on a daily basis develop a remarkable degree of discipline. Fueled by the desire to alleviate their fears, they cultivate habits of resilience and perseverance, essential traits on the path to achievement.Using Anxiety as Fuel: Rather than allowing anxiety to paralyze them, some individuals leverage it as a source of energy. By reframing their perception of anxiety, they transform it from a liability into an asset, propelling themselves forward with newfound vigor. The Unchecked Beast: However, when anxiety spirals out of control, it can become a relentless adversary, akin to a wild stallion that refuses to be tamed. Unmanaged anxiety can lead to a myriad of adverse outcomes, including impaired decision-making, decreased productivity, and diminished well-being.Navigating the Terrain: Managing anxiety requires a multifaceted approach. From mindfulness techniques to cognitive-behavioral strategies, individuals can learn to harness the power of anxiety while minimizing its negative effects. Anxiety can manifest differently in children compared to adults due to various factors such as cognitive development, communication abilities, and coping mechanisms. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for identifying and addressing anxiety in children effectively.Children might not have the vocabulary or cognitive ability to articulate their feelings accurately. They might express their anxiety through physical symptoms, avoidance behaviors, or changes in mood or behavior, such as irritability, clinginess, or excessive crying. Adults, on the other hand, can often verbalize their feelings more explicitly.Children may also not be able to identify the specific causes of their anxiety, whereas adults might have a better understanding of the triggers. Children might lack the coping skills that adults have developed over time. They might resort to behaviors like thumb-sucking, bed-wetting, or temper tantrums.Mr. Ira Hays is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a distinguished career in mental health and education, specializing in anxiety disorders, including school phobia and OCD. If we lack the mental fortitude to tackle stressful situations head-on, stress can wreak havoc on our well-being. Building up our mental and emotional reserves is essential for navigating such challenges successfully. Through the cultivation of both mental and physical strength, we enhance our resilience, empowering us to conquer life's hurdles with confidence.Engaging in regular exercise not only offers immediate relief from anxiety but also nurtures a lasting shield against stress and anxiety's detrimental effects. By consistently engaging in physical activities, we develop valuable coping mechanisms and techniques for regulating our emotions, equipping us to confront life's trials more effectively. Training our nervous system to exhibit resilience and to swiftly recover becomes attainable through self-care practices and calming strategies.Jenn Zerling, also known as "JZ," stands as a Fitness and Age Management Expert, as well as a devoted mother of two. Your 40's can be the most transformative or the most challenging decade of your life. With perimenopause looming, and gravity having its way with you, the 40's can be ridden with anxiety and stress. OR this decade can be an opportunity to finally achieve the goals you've always strived for but no longer fear taking a risk. Katia Stern challenged herself to make her 40's the best decade yet. At the age of 42, she entered a fitness bikini competition and at 46, she entered the Mrs. Canada competition. She was met with a lot of anxiety and doubt in herself but she pushed forward anyway. Despite being scared and anxious, she pushed forward and challenged herself in a way she couldn't even believe. Small decisions lead to big actions. Despite wondering “Who are you at 40 to be in a fitness competition?” Or “ Who are you at almost 50 to be in a beauty pageant?”, Katia was determined to move forward. Katia's mentors, Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield , and Lisa Nichols from the movie “The Secret” have taught her the realistic way to visualize and manifest the life of her dreams. In this interview Katia teaches us how to become a WOW woman. A woman that feels good in her body, that loves and takes care of her self, and a woman that feels confident in whatever age or shape she's in.Katia's solution to overcoming her anxiety is to take action. Take action despite being terrified. Take action even if you're shaking with fear. Take action even if you are not perfect. Katia shares her experience with public speaking for the first time and says “Nobody knows how anxious I was. Nobody knew how scared I felt but I went and did a great job and now…no more anxiety”. Katia also addresses how anxiety limited the choices in her life in the past and how now she uses regrets to push her past her anxieties and fears. Katia invested in her personal growth by hiring coaches to help her achieve her goals and overcome her anxiety. Katia realized that not investing in herself was more costly than spending money on quality coaches that could guide her in the direction of her dreams. Ami Goodheart, a brilliant costume designer from Los Angeles, and past neighbor of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard joins me to talk about her personal experience with Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in a same sex relationship, shedding more light on female perpetrators of IPV.Although women are more likely to be victims of IPV with male perpetrators, 1 out of 10 men report to being victims of IPV with female partners. This number is probably not an accurate representation due to the shame and stigma associated with reporting IPV by males.Ami also shares her personal experience with being believed while in a same sex relationship. Lesbian victims are often not taken seriously when reporting abuse. We need to do better as a society and learn to believe all victims of domestic violence, REGARDLESS of gender. It shouldn't be “Believe All women” but believe ALL Victims! It's also important to keep in mind that women being abusive and perpetrators of IPV is NOT an invitation to stop believing women but it should be an opportunity to better identify abusers regardless of gender. If you or someone you love is a victim of domestic violence, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline in the US at 800-799-7233 or visit thehotline.org for more information. Thoughts of fear, whether real or imagined, can cause us to not move ahead with any of our dreams or goals
So many people start the year off strong but by mid February they lose interest in their goals. This usually has to do with not setting clear and specific goals that create motivation instead of overwhelm. In this episode I break down the steps you need to take to set goals that are achievable. It starts by writing them down. Getting a clear vision through writing your goals will activate your Reticular Activating System (RAS) to move towards accomplishing your goals. One way to get clear is to break goals down in 5 categories and then write specific action steps beneath each category. For example:1.) Healtha. Cook meals at home 3 days a weekb. Buy groceries based on the EWG's Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen c. Go to the gym 4 days a week2.) Relationshipsa. Improve communication skillsb. Express myself more when I'm upset3.) Spiritualitya. Meditate moreb. Wait an hour before checking emails and social mediac. Document what I'm grateful for every day.4.) Financesa. Automatically save $100 every monthb. Have a budget of $_____ for entertainmentc. Paying off credit card debt5.) Careera. Ask for a raise at workb. Improve my skills in the area of ____c. Update my resume Your list can look similar or different than the list above but keep adding to each category so you have a very clear vision of what is required for each category. Once you meet the goal, cross it off and add another goal. “Discipline weighs ounces, while regret weighs tons” ~Jim Rohn I have a beautiful FREE Downloadable journal planner that can help you stay on track with your goals. There are so many ways that we can spread kindness in the world, but it's even more fulfilling when that positive impact is related to something we're passionate about. Amy McLaren, a mom of 2, CEO and entrepreneur, and now best selling author has turned her passion for travel and teaching to building over 14 schools in Kenya and now working on school #15, which will be an all girl school.A simple night in with her husband, watching an Oprah episode, led to a journey of following her passion and making a major impact on the lives of children in Kenya. Amy's passion led her to building schools but you don't have to take on such a major project in order to make an impact.“No impact is too big or too small” ~Amy McLaren You can make an impact through simple every day acts of giving from a place of love and joy instead of obligation. We as a society are more isolated and lonelier than ever but no group is impacted more than the elderly and the youth in our communities.Eric Peterson and Professor Jason Powell are trying to end that one match at a time.Together they've come up with a program to help the youth not only gain mentorship from the elders in the community but to also provide friendship and companionship.Eric and Professor Jason developed Seniors4Seniors, a program which brings together the older adults and youth in our communities, enabling enriching, real human connections. This program establishes connections between individuals with shared interests, with a focus on career aspirations of the youth that correspond to career backgrounds of the older adults. This is a unique approach that enables relationships that truly touch the human heart and mind.A recent article from Harvard addresses the impact social isolation has on memory and overall cognition. The past two years have made the holidays feel even more isolating. In many cultures, including many Asian cultures, the focus tends to be on physical health and mental health is rarely discussed. Vanessa Yang, the CEO and Founder of 1st Mentor Street, a mentorship program for youth, joins me to talk about how her Chinese background made it difficult to talk about mental health and wellness and how she's now helping teens navigate their mental and physical health as they figure out life in general. Vanessa addresses the excessive comparison of ability with other kids leading to insecurity and depression without any mental health support. The “model minority” status with the Asian culture creates a lot of pressure to succeed without consideration for mental health and wellness. There's also an unspoken rule about not complaining or expressing sadness about life stressors. Stress for success with immigrant families leads to high suicide rate.Vanessa also addresses what to do if your family doesn't believe in mental health support and how you can improve your coping skills. Through the sharing of her own history starting with conception, Nichol Mills, a life coach, talks about Trauma Incident Reduction and how that helped her put the pieces of her life together. Focusing on the goal of releasing the emotional charge with Trauma Incident Reduction, Nichol continued to process her own trauma surrounding her complicated and at times abusive relationship with her mother and used the lessons to be a more intentional parent to her own children. Trying to understand her mother in relationship to the trauma she's experienced has helped Nichol better understand her own childhood and upbringing with a mother who couldn't advocate for her own child.Learning to set firm but healthy boundaries with her mother has helped Nichol prioritize her needs in all relationships. Nichol shares “If I didn't have the mom that I had, I wouldn't be who I am” and is grateful for becoming more compassionate and ultimately a more present and loving mother to her children as a result of her relationship with her mother. Nichol talks about getting the love and nurturing she needed from mother figures who, though not her biological mother, were able to provide her with the love and validation her mother wasn't able to give her. These parental figures helped Nichol become a better parent to her 2 children. Nichol continues to put herself out there and becomes vulnerable despite the fears that come up. Reed, a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach, joins me to talk about the importance of creating a safe space for your body so it can start the healing process. Her own health challenges forced Amber to address stress directly and through the process she has been trained in modalities that focus on stress management directly.
