It would likely surprise most people that until about a decade ago, military service dogs were routinely euthanized at the end of their working service life rather than be transported back to the U.S. and a life of retirement. Congress and the Department of Defense finally provided some resources to ensure military working dogs are returned to U.S. soil at the completion of their service. These funds do not cover all transport costs and there are currently no funds to help these animals deal with the impact of physical and psychological trauma or illness when their military careers are completed. The situation is even more dire for the much larger group of trained service dogs used by private military contractors for whom there is no funding for return transport or even guaranteed feeding and medical treatment. Mission K9 Rescue co-founder Bob Bryant returns to discuss a bill pending in Congress to provide grant funding in support of military working dog medical care throughout their lives. Season 2 of “The David Johnson Show” - The Veteran Talk Show continues with an enlightening episode with Ms. Danique Masingill, President/Founder of Leashes of Valor, who discusses her work with military dogs to help post-9/11 war veterans. In her capacity as LOV's president, Danique is at the forefront of efforts to advance both the law and science surrounding service dogs. Danique's knowledge and experience helped quickly establish her as a canine expert. Congress, The Department of Transportation, the Government Accountability Office, and the airline industry have all tapped Danique's expertise to craft wide-ranging policies governing service dogs and military canines. For years, the U.S. military has enlisted military working dogs for various aspects of detection, apprehension, and other tactical duties. Dogs were used in this capacity in WWI and WW2 as well as in Korea and Vietnam. In fact, there were some 3,700 military dogs sent to work with the soldiers in Vietnam. By contrast, only 117 dogs were used in Operation Desert Storm, according to the U.S. War Dog Association. Danique Masingill backgroundWhile serving five years in the Navy, Danique Masingill first learned about military service dogs. The lightbulb that went off for Danique was that she was seeing dogs being used in life-saving areas like in mental health, trauma, PTSD and other areas related to combat-repercussions. Previously, she had only known dogs to be used for military detection work, apprehension work, the types of tactical needs tactical work. She saw a path in creating an organization for 9/11era veterans to help get through their combat trauma with the help of military dogs. Today, Leashes of Valor is a national non-profit working to provide post-9/11 veterans with highly-trained service dogs to help them limit the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), for example. The mission of Leashes of Valor is to bring veterans in need of companionship together with service dogs in order to enrich and improve both lives. It's a very worthy mission. We are thrilled to share Danique's story with military veterans. To learn more about Danique, read this article from her college alumni magazine. People love their pets and the military is no different. Dogs play a critical role in detecting threats and engaging potential threats during operations, however due to the loud sounds associated with these events a dogs hearing is impacted in some cases with short term and potentially permanent hearing loss. CCDC ARL's subordinate organization, Army Research Office, have partnered with industry to bring the next generation of hearing protection for our military canine battle buddies. In our 21st episode we sat with Dr. Stephen Lee from ARO to talk about this capability. Click here for the CCDC ARL article on the CAPS program

Vision: – To ensure the best quality of life for our nation's retired Military Working Dogs and Police K-9 Heroes through providing assistance with medical costs, food and end of duty services. Purpose: – To educate the public on the costs and responsibilities of adopting a retired K-9 Hero. – To help cover or offset all medical, food and end of duty costs for retired K-9 Heroes. – To ensure each K-9 Hero is rewarded with health and the way of life that they deserve for their faithful and loyal service. Additionally: Retired Military Working Dogs and Police K-9 Heroes accepted into Project K-9 Hero will have up to $3,000.00 per year in medical costs covered for them. Project K-9 Hero will also cover the K-9's food costs and have food shipped directly to the owner's residence. Project K-9 Hero additionally provides $500.00 to the owner when the K-9 is deceased for cremation or burial service. Any remaining funds out of the $3000.00 annual medical allotment will go into our general emergency medical fund available to all K-9's in our program for surgeries or other medical expenses that may exceed the annual benefit. This is all, of course, dependent on funding raised through donations. Jason Johnson has a passion for Police K-9's and he has dedicated his life to working with them, as well as training and taking care of them. Jason believes that Police K-9's perform selflessly for the departments and agencies they work for, and in return, they are not offered that same respect, in their retirement years, by those they served.

Since World War II, military dogs of all breeds have saved thousands of lives with their dogged determination to perform various tasks. Now, they can use your help in a couple ways. First, tune in to this special episode of the Oh Behave Show with Arden Moore to learn how you can help a national campaign to erect the first (and long overdue) military dog monument. It is set to be displayed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Second, find out how you can reach out to your local lawmakers to support the Canine Members of the Armed Forces Act that would finally re-classify military working dogs as mere equipment to being canine members of the Armed Forces. Here to unleash the details are former Army K9 handler Kristie Walker-Dober, now a board member for the John Burnam Military Dog Foundation (www.jbmf.us) and Lori Morton-Feazell, of Petco. Petco, Natural Balance, the ASPCA and Military Working Dog Adoptions are teaming up to change the law to aid military dogs. Petco and Natural Balance are staging a special donation drive for the military dog monument during September. Questions or Comments? Send them to: arden@petliferadio.com.
