This is the official VIC 4 VETS Honor Roll, highlighting our Honored Veterans during Veterans Appreciation Month. SUBMITTED BY: Listener Bob________________________________________________________________ Vic and Ken,I've thoroughly enjoyed and deeply appreciate the fact that this has been a weekly event for quite a while, and that it's now a daily occurrence during the month of June is just a phenomenal idea! Thank you both so much for that! It's very possible that I've missed any segment that may have mentioned the unsung heroes of so many U.S. Military Combat Operations, the K-9 Warrior. I'd like to take the opportunity to recognize the innumerable brave, intelligent, and Fearless members of the Armed Forces, which have served in every war since the American Revolution, in one form or another...as well as in other worldwide conflicts throughout human history. The story of the Military Working Dog (MWD) in US Forces officially began on March 13, 1942. That’s when the U.S. Army launched its War Dog Program during World War II, though canines have served honorably for much longer than that...including Sgt Stubby, a stray Boston Terrier Mix who served in WWI - he served in 17 battles, alerting troops to incoming gas attacks before humans could detect them, comforting wounded soldiers, and even capturing a German spy by biting him and refusing to let go until soldiers could capture him. Stories abound of our magnificent K9 companions serving honorably and selflessly in WWI and WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan (including the Belgian Malinois with nerves of steel, Cairo, who was part of SEAL Team 6’s historic mission to eliminate Osama bin Laden...and another Belgian Malinois, Conan - who played a critical role in the Delta Force raid that eliminated the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, only two of the many, many canines who've served selflessly and honorably, even while mortally wounded in some cases. The stories of these amazing K9 heroes remind us that courage and sacrifice aren’t limited to humans. For over a century, military working dogs have saved lives, detected danger, and provided unwavering loyalty to the soldiers they served alongside. Whether charging into battle, shielding their handlers, or using their sharp instincts to prevent catastrophe, these dogs have played a vital role in American military history." I get lost reading stories of them, there are so many. We as humans cannot possibly thank our deserving Canine Companions enough just for our interactions with them in our daily humdrum lives; their amazing contributions to human society in wartime is the well-earned and well-deserved stuff of legends. The Hidden Crisis Facing Military Working Dogs | Episode 89

Military working dogs are among the most highly trained and loyal members of America's armed forces. They detect explosives, patrol bases, and protect U.S. service members in some of the world's most dangerous environments. Their work saves lives. But what happens when these animals, who serve alongside our troops, are failed by the very system responsible for their care? In this episode of the Animal Wellness Podcast, host Joseph Grove examines troubling findings from a new investigation by Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy, raising serious concerns about lapses in veterinary care, oversight failures, and reports of preventable suffering and deaths among military working dogs on U.S. bases. Joseph is joined by two leading experts who bring a critical perspective to this issue: Dr. Thomas Pool, a veterinarian and former commander of the U.S. Army Veterinary Command, draws on decades of experience to explain the role of military working dogs, the standards of care they require, and where systemic breakdowns may be occurring within military veterinary systems. Kate Chupka Schultz, an experienced animal cruelty prosecutor and attorney, provides a legal lens — examining accountability gaps, the evolving status of military working dogs under the law, and what reforms may be necessary to ensure these animals are treated as sentient partners, not expendable equipment. Together, they explore urgent questions about responsibility, transparency, and reform — and what it means to honor the service of animals who serve in uniform. It would likely surprise most people that until about a decade ago, military service dogs were routinely euthanized at the end of their working service life rather than be transported back to the U.S. and a life of retirement. Congress and the Department of Defense finally provided some resources to ensure military working dogs are returned to U.S. soil at the completion of their service. These funds do not cover all transport costs and there are currently no funds to help these animals deal with the impact of physical and psychological trauma or illness when their military careers are completed. The situation is even more dire for the much larger group of trained service dogs used by private military contractors for whom there is no funding for return transport or even guaranteed feeding and medical treatment. Mission K9 Rescue co-founder Bob Bryant returns to discuss a bill pending in Congress to provide grant funding in support of military working dog medical care throughout their lives. Season 2 of “The David Johnson Show” - The Veteran Talk Show continues with an enlightening episode with Ms. Danique Masingill, President/Founder of Leashes of Valor, who discusses her work with military dogs to help post-9/11 war veterans. In her capacity as LOV's president, Danique is at the forefront of efforts to advance both the law and science surrounding service dogs. Danique's knowledge and experience helped quickly establish her as a canine expert. Congress, The Department of Transportation, the Government Accountability Office, and the airline industry have all tapped Danique's expertise to craft wide-ranging policies governing service dogs and military canines. For years, the U.S. military has enlisted military working dogs for various aspects of detection, apprehension, and other tactical duties. Dogs were used in this capacity in WWI and WW2 as well as in Korea and Vietnam. In fact, there were some 3,700 military dogs sent to work with the soldiers in Vietnam. By contrast, only 117 dogs were used in Operation Desert Storm, according to the U.S. War Dog Association. Danique Masingill backgroundWhile serving five years in the Navy, Danique Masingill first learned about military service dogs. The lightbulb that went off for Danique was that she was seeing dogs being used in life-saving areas like in mental health, trauma, PTSD and other areas related to combat-repercussions. Previously, she had only known dogs to be used for military detection work, apprehension work, the types of tactical needs tactical work. She saw a path in creating an organization for 9/11era veterans to help get through their combat trauma with the help of military dogs. Today, Leashes of Valor is a national non-profit working to provide post-9/11 veterans with highly-trained service dogs to help them limit the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), for example. The mission of Leashes of Valor is to bring veterans in need of companionship together with service dogs in order to enrich and improve both lives. It's a very worthy mission. We are thrilled to share Danique's story with military veterans. To learn more about Danique, read this article from her college alumni magazine.
