Mira shared her personal story of being diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases and explained how they are all connected to the immune system. We also touched on various topics, including the importance of reading ingredient labels, avoiding harmful additives, and making small, sustainable changes to our diets. During our conversation, Mira emphasized the need to find a doctor who is a good fit and can act as a partner in one's health journey. She also explained the challenges of navigating social situations while accommodating others' needs and maintaining one's own health goals. Additionally, we discussed the addictive nature of hyper-palatable and processed foods and how they can hinder a person's efforts to switch to real, whole foods. We also touched on the challenges of getting family members to buy into changing their eating habits. Mira encouraged finding teachable moments and sharing information to help family members understand the importance of making healthier choices. We agreed that it takes time for everyone to adjust, but eventually, adopting healthier habits becomes a natural part of the household.Throughout our conversation, we emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for one's health and diet choices. We suggested making small, sustainable changes rather than overwhelming oneself with a complete overhaul. It is essential to prioritize self-care and advocacy for one's own health before attempting to care for others. Remember, even small changes can lead to a healthier lifestyle overall. In conclusion, I hope this conversation has provided valuable insights on how to become an empowered shopper and your own health advocate. In today's episode I interview Mira Dessy. Mira is known as The Ingredient Guru. She is the author of The Pantry Principle: how to read the label and understand what's really in your food. She is also a speaker, holistic nutritionist, and real food advocate. She emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle through whole foods.   After experiencing years of debilitating digestive issues and health challenges, Mira realized the healing strength of food after she learned to eat right, slowly but surely regaining her health.   Mira was inspired to share the knowledge she gained on her journey to better health, and now her mission is to help people feel balanced, healthy, and to support them as they work to achieve their health goals.   Eat Well, Be Well   One of the things we tend to forget is that many of the health conditions that we experience, including the more serious ones like ulcerative colitis or arthritis or diabetes and the not so serious ones like body aches or bloating, are the result of years of exposure to non-food ingredients and not nourishing our bodies the way they need it.   It's important to know that every body is unique, exceptional and one of a kind. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. And many times we end up having this low-level unidentified disruption in what is really going on. And the truth is that it's not just what you eat, it's what you absorb. So, if your gut is not in good shape, you are not going to be able to absorb the nutrients your body needs.   If you eat foods with no nutritional value, your body is going to have to do something with it before it can get to the things that it actually needs. So, there is this whole paradigm of beginning to recognize that the gut is the key to what's going on with our health and well-being.   Our food can be our medicine, but we have to recognize that we live in human bodies our bodies require us to digest the food, absorb the nutrients and metabolize those nutrients and so, if we are missing those steps and putting whatever in our mouths thinking that our bodies will handle it, we are likely to end up with some serious health issues.   It's only when we come back and analyze what we are really eating and if our bodies are digesting these foods correctly (and also absorbing the nutrients), when we will see the benefits in our health.   One of the things that is so important to keep in mind is that there are so many different systems and processes going on in our bodies but the best place to start is at the foundation. Regardless of what's going on with your body, if your gut is better, you're better. There may be   other things like sleeping well or exercising or taking care of your mind but when we start at a foundational level, it provides the body with all of the basic building blocks it needs. After this is done, we can layer in the other things to find out what works best for your individual self.   Where to Start   The best place to start is in your own pantry. I encourage people to build the habit of reading the label in their foods and very best place to do this is in your pantry, go look at what's already in there.   We as humans have our 20 favorite foods and we tend to shop on autopilot. And unfortunately, there are probably things in your pantry right now that you don't want in your body. When you start reading the labels you realize there are things like artificial colors, or artificial flavors in your foods and you definitely don't want to be putting these inside your body, if you want your health to be as good as it can be.   I also encourage something called brand disloyalty. Don't buy the brand, buy what you need. This is because companies change, they merge or they get bought, and many times in these processes they don't change the brand, they just change what's in the package. Be loyal to yourself.   5 Things to Avoid   First of all, avoid anything that has the word artificial on the label. If it is artificial, it's not real, it is not food and our bodies do not need it. This includes artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, artificial colors, etc.   Another thing to avoid is high fructose corn syrup. It is not good for our bodies, especially for our liver. There are substitutes that we also need to watch out for that are as bad or worse, like agave nectar with higher fructose by volume than high fructose corn syrup.   You also want to avoid crystalline fructose because it is just dehydrated high fructose corn syrup. These tend to be in desserts and baked goods.   Carrageenan is another thing you want to avoid. This is an emulsifier and thickening agent extracted from red edible seaweeds. The type of process followed to extract it results in a byproduct that is not good for our bodies. It has a negative impact on our gut health, it can cause ulcerative colitis like symptoms in the gut and in laboratory studies it was shown to cause renal bumps.   Another sweetener to avoid is allulose. It is found in nature in very small quantities and now it has been replicated in laboratory settings to produce large quantities of it. It is really bad for the gut and makes you bloat. Unfortunately, it has found its way into many keto and paleo diets and protein bars also.   Lastly, stay away from anything that is not a real word. If it is just letters like BHT, BHA, EDTA, TBHQ, etc. All those are abbreviations for really long chemical names and these chemicals are used to preserve foods so they can sit in shelves for longer. These are not foods for the body. It is better to stick to ingredients you recognize as foods.   So next time you go to the supermarket just pick one category that you want to clean up, like non-dairy milks or canned soups or pickles or condiments. This way you don't have to spend 10 hours at the supermarket reading every single label. Once you have one category cleaned up you can move to the next one the next time you go grocery shopping.   Not a One-Size-Fits-All   You don't need to have a disease like IBS or Crohn's to be impacted by any of the non-food ingredients in many foods out there. It is true that if you have IBS or Crohn's the symptoms are going to be amplified and you may be in pain and trying to recover for weeks after being exposed to a certain non-food ingredient, but perfectly healthy people can also feel discomfort, bloating, constipation or diarrhea as a result.   There is so much information available online that can be conflicting, overwhelming, or just plain wrong for your particular body.   Part of the challenge we face is that for many of us it depends on how quickly our system responds. We could have slow motility and so the symptoms would not show for a while, or it could be also a matter of how much we are consuming of a specific ingredient.   Also, some things affect certain bodies in different ways than others. In the end, it's a matter of being conscious about what you are eating and how that makes you feel. Each body's response is different and it's our responsibility to keep track. As we previously said, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.   The important thing to remember is that no matter what your story is, if you are conscious and you nourish your body, that's always going to be better than not doing it at all.   If you want to reach out to Mira and learn how she can help you, please check out her website or hes Instagram @theingredientguru. Do you know where all the food you eat comes from, and what's really in it?  Many of the edible-appearing products on grocery store shelves contain ingredients that have the potential to be harmful. We as consumers are marketed to by the pretty pictures on the box or claims by the manufacturer. Commercials are abundant in making us believe their products are healthy. Making healthy decisions in the grocery store requires a degree in food science to navigate misleading and confusing food labels. The reality is, we don't really know exactly what's in all our food! Mira Dessy, The Ingredient Guru has demystified the nutritional maze. If we all ate the way Mira recommends, we would have a much healthier population and planet.  Mira Dessy is a holistic nutrition professional, author, and popular public speaker who knows that it's not just what you eat, but what's in what you eat. Feel like you need a dictionary to read food labels? Well, this week's guest has made a career out of educating others on which sneaky food additives and ingredients to avoid to reclaim and protect their health. These days, Mira Dessy is known as The Ingredient Guru. But she was once happily working as a database administrator. Then, health issues snowballed to the point where she could no longer work. It began with an irritable bowel then progressed to an immune system collapse and then to five different autoimmune diagnoses: ulcerative colitis, Hashimoto's disease, Raynaud's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome and a form of POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). She remembers living her life on the sofa. Mira proactively began taking control of her own health. She had always eaten what she thought was a healthy diet. But around that time, a friend gave her a book on artificial colors that changed her life. That was the moment she realized that there's way more to what we eat and she began digging deeper to find hidden sugars and preservatives in things that she thought were healthy foods. With dedication to a clean, anti-inflammatory diet, Mira gradually regained her energy and normal digestion, and got her life back. She eliminated all signs of ulcerative colitis, along with the symptoms of four autoimmune disorders. Her experience inspired a complete career change. As The Ingredient Guru, she is a holistic nutrition professional, author, and a popular public speaker. She knows that it's not just what you eat, but what's in what you eat. Understanding what ingredients to look out for on the foods you eat doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you start small. I’m joined by the Ingredients Guru, Mira Dessy, to talk about why food labels are so important to learn, how to avoid hidden ingredients, and how your grocery store is marketing to you.   The biggest warning signs on any food label or ingredient list are: Numbers on the label The word “enriched” Artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners MSG   About Mira Dessy Mira Dessy is The Ingredient Guru. As a nutrition educator, author, and real food advocate, her mission is to help people understand that it’s not just what you eat but what’s in it and what you eat that contributes to optimal health.  Mira is a member of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, The Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, The American Association of Drugless Practitioners, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Holistic Health Association, and a member of the professional advisory board For the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States.   How to Read Ingredient Labels They don’t call Mira Dessy the Ingredient Guru for nothing! She opens this episode by telling us exactly how we can start taking back control of the food we eat: it’s all in the ingredient’s list! Mira knows that ingredients lists can be overwhelming, especially when you first start investigating them. She gives us a great cheat sheet of what some of the top ingredients we need to look out for are. From artificial chemical names and numbers to what the real meaning of “enriched” food is. It might even surprise you that our produce has an ingredients list. Those little stickers on our fruit say more than what type of apple it is. What the number starts with and many digits long all indicate whether the fruit is organic, genetically-modified, or chemically treated. It’s likely that you’ve already heard about the Dirty Dozen, but do you actually know what it is? This is a list of the twelve food items most likely to have chemical contamination. It’s pretty important that we, as consumers, do our best to shop organic for the Dirty Dozen.   Where to Start Removing Ingredients It’s understandable if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the ingredients you need to watch out for. That’s why Mira encourages you to start with just one switch and go from there. Choosing which ingredient to avoid first is up to you. But Mira’s top ingredients to avoid are anything “enriched” as these foods have had natural nutrients removed and then artificially replaced. She also encourages you to remove gluten, dairy, and sugar from your diet early in your transition to a real-food diet. Mira’s last tips are about learning how to spot sugar on an ingredients list. Sugar won’t always be labeled as “sugar,” but could still be there.  She also wants you to get to know the farmers at your local farmer’s market! More often than not, local farmers don’t use pesticides but aren’t able to get organically certified because of all the regulations and laws around that certification. What’s the first ingredient you’ll be removing from your diet? Did you learn about the produce stickers? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   Quotes “One of my biggest things that I remind people is that if there’s a number on the label, that means it’s a chemical formula.” [20:19] “Pick one thing that’s important to you. If it’s about buying Dirty Dozen and thinking all the way through that produce, start with that. If it’s about getting rid of numbers, if it’s about getting rid of artificial ingredients, start there and master that. Learn how to shift what you’re already buying at the grocery store, then once you have that under control, move on to something else. Don’t try to do it all at once.” [24:03] “One of the things we have to remember when we’re shifting away from a highly-processed diet and more towards a real food diet is that we’re actually nourishing our body. Some of those processed foods, they may seem cheap, but we’re malnourished, we’re not getting the nutrient-dense items that our bodies need in order to be well.
