People are out there in the health realm screaming about Apeel on fruits and vegetables. While everyone should have every right to be concerned about what goes on their food for many reasons, the truth and reality of what the food supply is laced with goes way beyond Apeel. A recent online trend has some people convinced that their fruits and vegetables are made of silicon, rubber, or some other synthetic substance. The leading theory is that a new technology called Apeel, which is supposedly a company run by Bill Gates, is being sprayed on their foods. The problem is, Apeel Technologies is not a new company, Bill Gates' foundation is only one of many financiers that include Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Anne Wojcicki, the government of Singapore, and the Rockefeller Foundation, and the product is only used on a small number of foods. Furthermore, it's not about making foods rubbery, but instead preserving their freshness. The company uses a concoction derived from grapeseed oil anad composed of polyunsaturated fats. In this podcast, we're going to talk about Bill Gates' new product, Apeel, which is used to make fresh produce last longer. Of the ingredients in Apeel, 99.34 percent are listed as “other ingredients,” which is a red flag because of the lack of transparency. We know that Apeel contains monoglycerides and diglycerides—emulsifiers, which help mix things together. Apeel also contains solvents and heavy metals, including palladium, cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic! Manufacturers claim these metals are safe in small amounts, but there is no data about chronic consumption over time. Apeel also contains polyethylene glycol, a compound found in antifreeze. Apeel could be a partially hydrogenated product. The FDA has banned trans fats, but loopholes still allow manufacturers to use them in their products. If a product has less than .5 grams of trans fats, the FDA allows them to round it down to zero and not report the trans fats in the product. If a product is classified as an emulsifier, not a lipid or fat, it is exempt from the FDA's ban on trans fats. There is some controversy surrounding the function of the Apeel coating on produce. Is it a coating to keep food fresh or a fungicide? The EPA and the OMRI describe Apeel as a fungicide used after harvest, but Apeel is advertised as a protective coating. There's no way to remove the Apeel coating from your fresh produce, so it could potentially lock pesticides or pathogens inside. Think twice about buying fruits and vegetables that have this coating on them.

I have a question that is really bothering me. I try my hardest to do everything as healthy as I can afford and can physically manage, but lately, there's a lot of conversation about the new Fruit and vegetable coating that's called Apeel. I feel that this isn't safe, but what are you supposed to do if the only fruit and vegetable that you can find has that on it?? Have you researched this at all? I'd be interested in what you'd have to say   Type A personality and High-ish fasting glucose Kelly writes: Hi Robb! I'm a fairly new listener (just started listening a few months ago - thank you for your super interesting range of topics!). I had a question after reading one short line in your book Wired to Eat. You mentioned that being Type A or “wound tightly” can lead to higher readings of fasting blood sugar. I personally would describe myself as Type A and always wake up with a rush of energy in the morning and an urge to “get things done” immediately. I also have a history of anxiety, although it's been amazingly managed with switching over to zero added sugar, zero grains and by getting great sleep. Recently I've been experimenting with my blood sugar to get a sense of where I'm at. I test after meals (usually 1.5 hours) and my blood sugar is always around 77-100, depending on if I went on a walk after the meal or not. Typically it hovers on average at 86-90 postprandial. And from my understanding, the goal is to be under 120 by two hours. So these results seem great! But everytime I test my fasted blood sugar around 6am, it's on the “higher” side of normal - 89-95. Could this be due to my Type A personality as you mentioned in your book? For reference: I'm a 5'5” 30 year old woman. I'm very active (walk about 13-15,000 steps per day), go to the gym 4-5 days per week for resistance training. I eat lower carb, I don't eat grains, I get about 130 grams of protein per day (around 90-100 of that being from complete sources), I eat 1-2 servings of low sugar fruit per day, I'm not shy on eating whole fats (but I don't track, so not entirely sure on what I eat per day - but I always eat until satisfied). In the past, my triglycerides were well under 100, usually around 70 ish and my blood pressure is about 100/65. Thank you for your insight!
