Illinois v. Perkins, 496 U.S. 292, 297-298 (1990): “Miranda forbids coercion, not mere strategic deception by taking advantage of a suspect's misplaced trust in one he supposes to be a fellow prisoner. As we recognized in Miranda: “[C]onfessions remain a proper element in law enforcement. Any statement given freely and voluntarily without any compelling influences is, of course, admissible in evidence.” 384 U.S., at 478, 86 S.Ct., at 1629. Ploys to mislead a suspect or lull him into a false sense of security that do not rise to the level of compulsion or coercion to speak are not within Miranda 's concerns. Cf. Oregon v. Mathiason, 429 U.S. 492, 495–496, 97 S.Ct. 711, 714, 50 L.Ed.2d 714 (1977) (per curiam); Moran v. Burbine, 475 U.S. 412, 106 S.Ct. 1135, 89 L.Ed.2d 410 (1986) (where police fail to inform suspect of attorney's efforts to reach him, neither Miranda nor the Fifth Amendment requires suppression of prearraignment confession after voluntary waiver). Miranda was not meant to protect suspects from boasting about their criminal activities in front of persons whom they believe to be their cellmates. This case is illustrative. Respondent had no reason to feel that undercover agent Parisi had any legal authority to force him to answer questions or that Parisi could affect respondent's future treatment. Respondent viewed the cellmate-agent as an equal and showed no hint of being intimidated by the atmosphere of the jail. In recounting the details of the Stephenson murder, respondent was motivated solely by the desire to impress his fellow inmates. He spoke at his own peril”. Ephesians 2:20-22 — What is the most important part of a building? Some may think the walls or the floor, but it is always the foundation. In the church, it is no different. In this sermon on Ephesians 2:20–22 titled “Fitly Framed Together,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones continues teaching a further understanding of the nature of the church and the application that truth has for the Christian. Previously, Dr. Lloyd-Jones expounded on the importance of the foundation (apostles, prophets, and Christ being the cornerstone), but he turns to the stones being placed on the foundation—the church. First, each stone must be “truly and rightly related to that foundation” and to each other. Each stone (or church member) is different, but is still inseparably tied to the rest of the building. Also, each stone must be connected to the foundation. Ultimately God is the builder, but as Dr. Lloyd-Jones notes, God uses pastors (1 Cor 3:10-15). Dr. Lloyd-Jones issues a warning for pastors that they are careful what they build the church with. Ploys can be used to build big churches, but only those who have a “vital union” with the foundation—Jesus—will last. God is building His church to be “harmoniously fitted together” with true believers of every type of person.

We return to the book "Meaningness" for the conclusion of the Eternalism chapter. I delayed this episode until now in case David Chapman wrote more, or revised them, and no longer considered them unfinished. It's worthwhile just as it is, and I have formatted all these short pages as if they were sections in one page. Eternalist Ploys: Ploys—ways of thinking, feeling, talking, and acting—which stabilize eternalism; and antidotes to use against them. https://meaningness.com/eternalist-ploys Imposing fixed meanings: Forcing fixed meanings on experience always eventually results in unpleasant shocks when reality refuses to conform to your pre-determined categories. https://meaningness.com/imposing-fixed-meanings Smearing meaning all over everything: Monist eternalism—the New Age and SBNR, for example—say everything is meaningful, but leaves vague what the meanings are. https://meaningness.com/smearing-meaning Magical thinking: Hallucinating causal connections is powerfully synergistic with eternalism. https://meaningness.com/magical-thinking Hope: Hope is harmful in devaluing the present and shifting attention to imaginary futures that may never exist. https://meaningness.com/hope Pretending: Eternalist religions and political systems are always partly make-believe, like children playing at being pirates. https://meaningness.com/pretending Colluding for eternalism: Because eternalist delusion is so desirable, we collude to maintain it. To save each other from nihilism, we support each other in not-seeing nebulosity. https://meaningness.com/collusion Hiding from nebulosity: Physically avoiding ambiguous situations and information. https://meaningness.com/hiding-from-nebulosity Kitsch and naïveté: The denial of the possibility of meaninglessness leads to willfully idiotic sentimentality. https://meaningness.com/kitsch Armed & armored eternalism: When nebulosity becomes obvious, eternalism fails to fit reality. You can armor yourself against evidence, and arm yourself to destroy it. https://meaningness.com/armed-eternalism Faith: Privileging faith over experience is an eternalist ploy for blinding yourself to signs of nebulosity. https://meaningness.com/faith Thought suppression: Maintaining faith in non-existent meanings. It leads to deliberate stupidity, inability to express oneself, and inaction. https://meaningness.com/thought-suppression Bargaining and recommitment: When eternalism lets you down, you are tempted to make a bargain with it. Eternalism will behave itself better, and in return you renew your faith in it. https://meaningness.com/recommitment Wistful certainty: The thought that there must exist whatever it takes to make eternalism seem to work. https://meaningness.com/wistful-certainty Faithful bafflement: Maintaining the eternalist stance that remains committed but begins to doubt. https://meaningness.com/faithful-bafflement Mystification: Using thoughts as a weapon against authentic thinking, to create glib, bogus metaphysical explanations that sweep meaninglessness under the rug. https://meaningness.com/mystification Rehearsing the horrors of nihilism: Reminding yourself and others of how bad nihilism is can help maintain the eternalist stance. This is the hellfire and brimstone of eternalist preaching. https://meaningness.com/rehearsing-nihilist-horror Purification: An obsessive focus for dualist eternalism mobilizes emotions of disgust, guilt, shame, and self-righteous anger. https://meaningness.com/purity Fortress eternalism: In the face of undeserved suffering, is difficult not to fall into the stance that most things are God's will, but not the horrible bits. https://meaningness.com/fortress-eternalism On next week's episode, we return to the Nihilism chapter of Meaningness: Objectivity. Dr. Perrodin explains how mass media irresponsibly portrayed the October 1, 2017, Las Vegas massacre as an act of evil that any of us could encounter, in any location, at any moment. In addition, false articles defeated algorithm “truth” filters, journalism was sacrificed for short-term ratings, the collective public anxiety rocketed with no efforts to point out the counter-balance of “good” occurring in the country (such as thousands of Cajun Navy Relief workers still helping people devastated by last month's hurricanes); and persons of authorities were manipulated by eager reporters asked leading questions. The tragedy preyed upon the insatiable thirst of people to learn what happened and why it happened - and the latter will be rhetoric or pundits' proclamations as truth is revealed, as best as possible, months later following an exhaustive forensic study. MEDIA MESS. Leading social media sites struggled to parse authentic stories from fabricated stories. As we rely more on algorithms and bots and less on humans, this flurry of “questionably verified news” is what we will always deal with in such an event. News sites want clicks and people will grasp at any information. Dr. Perrodin advises everyone to listen to the police information present at the scene for the most reliable information. LOCAL NEWS SPIN. David expresses his perspective of local news TV quickly interviewing school administrators and police officers about how they would have (A) responded to this incident had it happened “here”, (B) How they train for such incidents, and (C) Advice for the audience. These are leading questions and aim to accomplish, what Dr. Perrodin refers to as “Projected Benchmarking”, or forcing people to imagine that the situation and context of the Vegas shooting could happen at any location at any moment. It's actually quite simple to pull off this illusion as people are primed to want to express that they are prepared (whatever that means as sentinel events are unpredictable and nonlinear). Massive assumptions are made about the incident and preliminary reports are vetted. Rhetoric is unchecked. WHAT'S WRONG WITH ASKING HOW YOU WOULD HANDLE THE INCIDENT IF IT HAPPENED HERE? In US, approximately 100 people a day are killed in car crashes, yet we only talk about “sentinel” events - and only other comparable shooting of this nature was Texas Clock Tower massacre on 1966. We so readily are willing to overlook that each event is bound to context, situation and time. ADVICE ARTICLES ARE GENERIC & USELESS. Advice is universal when recited by the news talking head or the police. Telling someone to always run during an active shooter event is not sound advice as one could run directly into the line of fire, especially at night amongst 22,000 people…and what if there are multiple shooters? DR. PERRODIN HAS CONFIDENCE IN THESE NEWS SOURCES. He encourages people to obtain information from Wikinews, Reuters or Trunews.com. David also discourages the tendency to follow the clickbait headings dealing with motives. FOLLOW. DR. We invited European Investment Bank lawyers Maria Cerrato, Tom Nguyen, Kinga Soltész and Matthias Brzezinski together again to reveal some of the legal ruses used when things don't quite go as planned. We learn what harmless-sounding phrases like ‘to the best of my knowledge after due inquiry' really mean. And what ‘the data room' is - a place, typically, with no natural light, a place in which no-one really wants to end up. We find out how to ‘yank the bank' and what a ‘drop dead clause' is. But, as it turns out, there is poetry in all this legal darkness. There are ‘midnight clauses' and ‘insolvency waterfalls', cascading down from an ‘insolvency pool' like a blessing to (some of) the creditors. Tune in and let us light your way! Hosted on Acast. Dr. Ruscio presented on The Gut; Diet, Flora, Health and Disease at the Ancestral Health Society's 2014 symposium at UC Berkeley. He reviews the impact hygiene has on our health, hunter gather versus westernized microbiotas and what the science actually says about manipulating our microbiotas with probiotics, prebiotics and fiber.
