Nicole talks with Brooke about her journey, from being part of a very small community to winning the title of Miss Iowa and taking part in the Miss America Pageant along with the transition from being a disabled child to a disabled adult and how the attention changes. They discuss the importance of community and body autonomy and why Niccole is proud to be disabled   KEY TAKEAWAYS Every day, in my job, I'm thinking about, talking about and serving the amputee community, it's my every day It was crazy when I won because up until that point the messaging for me was that I wasn't any different I competed alongside all the other girls for Miss America and felt like I won fair and square but the focus was on how inspiring it was Inherently me stepping on that stage was a really big thing and I was used as a marketing tool and treated differently I didn't have a community surrounding me who could help me to make sense of it My life shifted drastically with the experience and it was full on as an experience the saving grace in all of it was the community Socially structures have been built to keep us out and it's a lot of work to break those barriers I wish I'd been taught earlier about body autonomy and how to reach a point of peace with your body I understand that when people first interact with me I am representing everyone on my community   BEST MOMENTS ‘I went from winning one night to being world news the next day and that really freaked me out' ‘Let's change the narrative, it doesn't have to be pity narrative or a superhuman narrative or overcoming I'm living in my disabled body every day and doing things' ‘My disability isn't my only attribute'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Disabled & Proud Podcast   ABOUT THE HOST Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Each week this podcast highlights an awesome disabled guest speaking about their own disability; why they are proud to be disabled and why they are proud to be themselves.      The conversations in this show will look at what challenges these amazing people face socially, mentally, physically and life in general. This show is raw, open, honest, funny, welcoming and educational.      Disabled & Proud does exactly what it says on the tin! And whilst we are creating this space for disabled people to be unashamedly themselves, without the need to conform to society, this is also not about toxic positivity. This show will be shining a big, bright light on disability without it being “Paralympic or pity”.    As you will hear disability is WHOLE, COMPLETE & PERFECT and whilst the topic of disability can be quite heavy - and we definitely don't shy away from the bad days - this podcast is also about having fun too! Our aim is to play a part in reclaiming the word disability - turning it from inadequacy to perfection!                            INSTAGRAM! https://www.instagram.com/disabledandproudpodcast/?hl=en: https://www.instagram.com/disabledandproudpodcast/?hl=enThis show was brought to you by Progressive Media

This episode was truly at Operatic heights of drama as Yale begins sending out acceptance letters to the coeds of Constance and St. Judes. And as the admissions results role in, B goes on a war path. For Emily Tinsman, the third time was the charm in her pursuit of the Miss Iowa crown.  Crowned Miss Iowa 2019.  Tinsman's platform is known as TEMPOS, Teach and Encouraging Music Participation in Our Schools. A music education major at Drake and a classical vocal performer, Tinsman had to put a job on hold teaching in Des Moines to accept the Miss Iowa crown. The 23-year-old nearly did not compete. It wasn’t until March of 2019 that Tinsman decided she wanted to take one more shot at Miss Iowa. In order to get there, she competed in what is known as sweeps, the final competition of the year in which anyone can compete to see if they can earn a spot in the Miss Iowa Pageant. After graduating from Drake, Tinsman was on a plane to Europe. She returned to the Quad-Cities on Thursday, June 6, three days before Miss Iowa week began June 9. There would be three days of competition, June 13-15 at the Adler Theater in Davenport. She has spent 2019 & the first part of 2020 reaching more children, their parents and teachers. In addition to representing the State of Iowa for a year, Tinsman competed in the Miss America Pageant 2020.

Ep. 11 — A reluctant beauty pageant winner finds a unique path to a Harvard education and develops a passion for public service / Erin Walczewski, Attorney, Cooley, LLP. When Erin Walczewski first entered the Miss Iowa beauty pageant, she never expected to win. Her goal was simply to win some scholarship money for college. To her surprise, the skeptical contestant won the Miss Iowa crown. Walczewski wouldn’t realize for a long time what the true prize was from that competition. Still a reluctant participant, Walczewski went on to the Miss America contest, which she lost. But it would prove to be the best loss of her life, giving her the opportunity to do a year of public service in her home state and develop confidence, poise, and invaluable public speaking skills plus enough scholarship funds to get her into college. Competing in those early beauty pageants continued to have a profound effect on Walczewski’s life and career. She won a prestigious scholarship with powerful mentoring, which eventually got her into Harvard Law School; later, a job on the 9/11 Commission’s Public Discourse Project (PDP) where her public speaking skills from her beauty contest days helped her play a key role in educating the American public about the terrorist attacks; and the opportunity to teach law at Georgetown University and later at Harvard. As a pro bono counsel at Cooley law firm, Walczewski recently had the chance to go to the U.S. Mexico border to provide legal advice to women seeking asylum. There, in the process of counseling these emotionally, physically, and psychologically traumatized women, Walczewski truly understood how the Miss Iowa and Miss America contests, in teaching her to communicate with and help those less fortunate than herself, had become gifts that keep on giving. Transcript Download the PDF Chitra:   Hello and welcome to When it Mattered, a podcast on how leaders are forged in critical moments and how they deal with and learn from adversity. This episode is brought to you by Goodstory, an advisory firm helping technology start-ups find their narrative. Chitra:  My guest today is Erin Walczewski. She's a former Miss Iowa who competed for Miss America and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. She works as an attorney and a lecturer on law at Harvard. Before law school, Walczewski worked in national security notably on the 9/11 Public Discourse Project and she also taught high school English in Japan. Chitra:   Walczewski currently serves as pro bono counsel at Cooley where she counsels non-profits and earlier this year traveled to the US/Mexico border to provide legal counsel to women seeking asylum. She also is a frequent public speaker and presenter. Erin, welcome to the podcast. Erin Walczewski:   Hi Chitra, thanks so much for having me. Chitra:   It's great having you. What led you to compete for Miss Iowa? Erin Walczewski:   It's a funny question. I was just thinking about that in preparation to do this interview with you. And it almost, the fastest way to explain it is that I accidentally won a beauty pageant. We don't actually call them that. The Miss America organization is very clear that it's not a beauty pageant, it's a scholarship competition. That's actually a joke in the movie, Miss Congeniality, if you ever saw that, which I found hilarious. Erin Walczewski:   But really I was looking for scholarship money. And at the time I was looking for ways that I could help finance my own college education and found out, found out through a recruiter about the, a local competition for Miss Iowa. And in a nutshell, I said, "No, no, no. I don't do pageant things." And they said, "Well, if you compete all five phases of competition, you win a minimum scholarship of $50." Erin Walczewski:   And I thought, "Well, I could complete five phases of competition." And I did. And very surprisingly to me, I ended up winning the local competition. And they said,

Those experiences have stayed with me my entire life. The benefit of this is I am very comfortable being watched, looked at, and being stared at by other people. This has played a huge part in my life as a professional artist, performer, and speaker. Many people have a fear of being on stage, being watched, or speaking in public. At the same time, I am a pretty open and talkative person. Put these two things together and some really fun and meaningful conversations can arise. After living a lifetime with one hand I have noticed patterns in the questions kids ask me about my one-handed life. One question that comes up a lot with kids is, "How do you do things with only one hand?" I really love this question because it tells me a lot about the little person who is asking. It tells me they are open-minded, curious, and taking my one-handedness into consideration with some deep thought.
