On this special episode of "Between The Notes" edition here on The Business Side of Music, show contributor Jack Sharkey and host Bob Bender go on a rant, discussing the value of the larger venue concert, and why some acts are having a difficult time selling out these days. Are they (the artist) still viable? Is the cost (and the unpredictable weather when its outdoors) worth going to stand around with hopefully thousands of your closest friends in a partially filled event? Jack and Bob delve into why some acts should no longer find themselves anticipating performing at large venues, when its difficult to put butts in the seats, and the scaling back to smaller venues such as auditoriums or theaters (or clubs) might make more financial sense.... in spite of their egos. The Music Store. Also known as the social gathering place for musicians to gather at, check out the latest musical gear, purchase their goods such as guitars, drums, strings, and sticks. But the traditional music store is much more than that. Its a locale where musicians both new and seasoned can get together and share their chops, collect new ideas, and exchange phone numbers and email addresses. It's where bands are created. But with the recent announcement of the closing of one of the largest music store chains in the Country, the selection of choices has diminished somewhat. But has it? We still have across the nation and the world, the traditional mom and pop music stores, still opening their doors every day, competing against the online internet based music retailers. Jack Sharkey and Bob Bender bring another special edition of the "Between The Notes" series here on The Business Side of Music, discussing the demise of the traditional big box music stores, and how its now more important than ever for today's musician to seek out and put their hard earned cash into the local music retail establishments when purchasing new music gear. On this VERY special episode of the podcast we are lucky enough to sit down in person with the namesake of the Twilight League Championship Trophy, Steve Ehrlich. Steve has been coming to camp every year in some capacity since 1959, helped start the Nate Wasserman Camp Fund, and has been the commissioner of Fantasy Camp since its origin. Steve is now the heartbeat of our alumni network. We talk about how camp changed and evolved over the decades, what Nate Wasserman was like, stories about camp legends Al Lewis, Bob Bender, Koz, and Jim "Buzz" Wyeth, where a lot of our traditions, sayings, games, and songs come from, the first ever Kawaga competition, the Meat Man and much more. After the 90 minutes were over we both shared how much we didn't even touch on…but this is a great start!
In this in-depth interview with legendary Country Music singer Larry Gatlin, Lorrie and Larry share stories of how they've survived the turmoil of being on the road, overcoming addictions, what its like to work with Larry's brothers after 70 years, and how their faith in God has kept them going. They also talk politics, grandchildren, and who's feet are cuter! War Paint With Lorrie Morgan is a monthly podcast show, hosted by Lorrie Morgan. We can't believe it's been six years in the making to get to this moment, and we wanted to do something special… or at least different. For the first time ever, the host of the show, Bob Bender, becomes the guest! After all this time, we find out what makes Bob tick, how (and why) he got into the music business, and the reason he stuck with it for 50 plus years. He also shares some of the inner workings of the music business, including its sometimes not so nice side of the industry, along with the perils and pitfalls he faced along the way. Hosting the show is Bob's good friend, Joe Hand, who takes the helm, and asks the hard questions. There's even a nice little surprise at the end of the show that pretty much left Bob speechless (almost). Joe Hand is a lifelong musician, producer, recording artist, and writer. A graduate of Boston's Berklee College of Music, Joe has been making music for over 35 years, both on stage, and in studios all over the world. He's worked with such diverse artists as Linkin' Park to John Michael Talbot. www.joehand.com Creator and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Showrunner and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. The motion, first brought last year by Virginia pastor Mike Law, received the required two-thirds vote by messengers. Another two-thirds vote of approval is necessary at next year’s annual meeting to proceed with the amendment to Article III of the SBC Constitution. The motion that was passed was amended from its original version, which was referred to the SBC Executive Committee last year at the SBC annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. Juan Sanchez, senior pastor of High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, offered the amendment to Law’s motion. Both pastors had discussed and agreed on its merits the previous weekend, Sanchez told fellow messengers. Article III lists five points that place churches within the definition of cooperation with the SBC. The amended motion calls for a sixth, adding churches that affirm, appoint, or employ “only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture.” Sanchez initially presented his amendment as a “substitute motion.” SBC President Bart Barber, with no objection from the crowd, clarified later that it was being treated as an amendment. The Executive Committee agreed at its meeting on June 12 to bring Law’s motion to the messengers at this year’s meeting. However, the EC’s recommendation included EC opposition to the motion itself, stating that matters of belief ought to be addressed in the Baptist Faith and Message rather than the constitution. Article VI of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 addresses The Church, stating that “While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.” Bob Bender, pastor emeritus of Cross Fellowship Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., spoke in opposition to the motion. “Southern Baptist brothers and sisters, I beg of you,” he said. “Do not do this. All the liberals have left us. It looks like we conservatives are left to fight amongst ourselves.” Women in associate pastoral roles need to be recognized for their contributions, Bender said. Denny Burk, a messenger from Kenwood Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., said the amendment “does nothing to diminish [women’s] calling and their work among us.” “We all believe they must be a part of the Great Commission,” said Burk, who also serves as the director of the Center for Gospel and Culture at Boyce College. The heart of the amendment, he continued, “is about how to apply our doctrinal statement to our cooperation when it comes to female pastors.” The vote took place at noon just prior to scheduled luncheons by seminaries and other groups. Before the final vote, a motion to extend time was defeated. https://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/2023/06/14/ma-middle-schoolers-foment-a-pronoun-rebellion-during-pride-month-and-the-media-is-aghast-n2624491 Middle Schoolers' USA Rebellion at Pride Event Causes Libs to Melt Down As the kids say nowadays, these middle schoolers are based. Select Board member Michael Espejo said a "bad light has been cast over our town." "I was very upset, I've lost sleep over it," Espejo said about the incident. "It kind of shocked me to my core. I didn't think something like that could happen in Burlington." Burlington School Committee Chair Martha Simon condemned the incident at a meeting Tuesday night, but declined any specifics on disciplinary actions, stressing the offenders were mere eighth graders. But a room full of parents, mostly of LGBTQ kids, argued that school officials needed to take a stronger stand and use the incident as a "teaching moment" refuting the notion that overt pride displays are somehow not appropriate for schools. Brexit leader Nigel Farage has foretold of impending, authoritarian measures by Western governments designed to limit people’s movements and vehicle usage under the guise of “climate change” action. Speaking to supporters via social media, Farage warns: “climate lockdowns are coming,” citing a recent limit placed on automobile usage by the far left Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. In response to one of Khan’s tweets, which encouraged Londoners to “avoid unnecessary car journeys,” Farage argued: “he’s telling us: don’t use your car unnecessarily, no engine idling, no burning of wood or waste.” Khan has often warned of the dangers of climate change and used it to justify London’s “Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ),” which charges Brits £12.50 per day to drive in the capitol. https://twitter.com/i/status/1668555766670802944 - Play Video Now it’s time for my favorite topic, sports! https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2023/06/14/huston-report-mlb-quietly-tells-teams-to-ditch-pride-uniforms/ MLB Quietly Tells Teams to Ditch ‘Pride’ Uniforms Major League Baseball has quietly told teams that they can stop forcing players to wear uniforms and hats adorned with gay pride rainbow colors during their “Pride Night” games. The decision comes as the L.A. Dodgers are taking major heat for inviting the radical, anti-Catholic hate group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, to its gay pride night game on June 16. And also as several major corporations, including Bud Light and Target, are facing serious economic losses thanks to their wild-eyed support of the far-left LGBTQ agenda. The Tampa Bay Rays was the first MLB team to announce that players would not wear any rainbow-colored patches or jerseys during the June pride game this year. But, the league kept this change to its pride celebrations very quiet since giving teams dispensation to dump the pride colors and special jerseys back in February, according to the Washington Examiner. The Rays had trouble with the pride night plans last year when several players balked at being forced to wear rainbow colors. At the time, several players rebelled against the pride jerseys and refused to wear them during last year’s pride game. Not all teams are dumping the forced fealty to the groomer agenda. The L.A. Dodgers and San Francisco Giants have announced their intentions to continue wearing the pride jerseys. There has been one team that has eschewed the pride business from the beginning. The Texas Rangers is the only team that has consistently refused to indulge in any demonstrations of “pride” and has never scheduled any “Pride Night” games. Pro baseball is not the only sport to see growing resistance to having “pride” forced on players, games, and their sport. A growing number of NHL players and teams are also turning away from blatant expressions of the groomer agenda. Teams, including the Chicago Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres, have experienced issues with using pride jerseys. In addition, San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer opted out of wearing the jersey, citing his religious convictions. In January, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov also decided not to wear his team’s gay pride jersey for similar reasons. And that same month, the New York Rangers opted out of wearing the gay pride jersey. It seems to all be part of a growing trend of Americans finally getting sick and tired of the gay agenda being shoved down everyone’s throats by multi-billion-dollar corporations. Major League Baseball was one of the last major sports to succumb to the extreme woke agenda. It’s time it goes back to being the sport that welcomes everyone to come play baseball, not to be inundated with politics.

Not Everyone Should Get a Participation Trophy, nor does everyone get a record deal. What is the definition of talent? What does it take to be truly successful? And at what point should you walk away when you realize it's not going to happen to you? The music business is no different than any other industry, from the aspect that no matter how hard you work, you may still not make it to the top of the heap. For you to give your best, are you willing to sacrifice your social life, your friends, or even your family? In a business that almost requires a 24/7 presence, the music industry can be tough on a good day. Is getting on one of today's reality based music contest TV shows worth that sacrifice? How much of that will actually enhance your career? It's all about knowing what direction you want your career to head in, and just as important, having the ability and understanding to take direction from reliable people in the industry. Artist consultant and vocal rehabilitation coach Jana Jones Uttz discusses this, and other topics that today's up and coming artists need to know, and hopefully understand if they're going to take the steps required to make an impression on the music scene. We even have a discussion on Elvis, and how Sam Phillips and Colonel Tom Parker were more influential regarding Elvis' career than originally thought of or considered. Jana Uttz is a Vocal Producer, Voice Performance Coach, Artist Consultant, and Freelance Writer within the Entertainment Industry. She attended Union University, receiving her Bachelor of Music Degree, Cum Laude, in Vocal Performance in Double Minor in Music Theory/Journalism. She has over 30 years of experience in the music industry. Jana is Currently A & R director, talent scout, and vocal producer for Round Room Music and Recording Studio along with being the owner of Vox Matrix Studio. She's also Adjudicator for Tennessee area vocal and/or choral festivals, competitions, talent shows, and awards shows. Jana has been a vocal consultant/trainer for many reality tv shows - The Voice, American Idol, America's Got Talent, and the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant, along with being Freelance writer on all subjects that pertain to the human voice, singing styles, music history, and local entertainment. Larry Groce's career is quite an interesting and intriguing story. He attended high school with future recording artists Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and BW Stevenson. He became a regular performer at an NYC Upper West Side restaurant owned by Melissa Manchester's husband, and went on to record 9 albums and 36 tunes for Disney featuring children's songs including, when in 1976 he wrote “Pooh for President” for Disney to be released at Sears Stores. In 1976, his satiric novelty song "Junk Food Junkie" became a Billboard top-ten hit, and led to appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, American Bandstand, The Midnight Special, The Rich Little Show, Nashville Now, The Disney Channel, Dr. Demento, and A Prairie Home Companion. In 1983, Groce co-founded Mountain Stage, a two-hour live music program produced by West Virginia Public Radio and distributed nationally and internationally by NPR and Voice of America's satellite radio service to over 200 stations. He is its host, producer and artistic director. His musical tastes have been instrumental in defining the sound of the show. Mountain Stage was the first nationally broadcast radio or television program to feature live performances by Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow, Barenaked Ladies, Alison Krauss, Ani DiFranco, Phish, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, David Gray, and The Avett Brothers. The show has also featured musical pioneers such as Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Pops Staples, and Brownie McGhee as well as modern superstars R.E.M., Martina McBride and Norah Jones. Groce retired from hosting Mountain Stage in 2021 with his successor being hit singer songwriter, and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea. Joining us on the show as co-host is John Adams from Money Concepts. We talk a bit about how Larry saved the money he earned during his career, and we even delve into how the Chuck Berry Hit “Johnny Be Good” came about. What gets you pumped to go out and play a gig? Is it the prestige? The adulation from the audience? Or is it the paycheck at the end of the night? Too often we find that the entertainer perceives themselves as someone who is either not worthy of charging a fair and equitable amount for their time and talent, or they're afraid that someone else is going to play the gig for less money (or heaven forbid… FREE!). Unfortunately this mindset creates a snowball effect, where eventually artists are playing for low wages, tips only, or just for the exposure, hoping they'll get discovered by someone. We're the only industry with this business model, and it's time to work on ways to break that bad habit. Angela McCuiston with Music Strong, is a powerful advocate for the musician, who wants to help others work towards creating a self worth, and eventually set the standard that they are viable, and have something to bring to the table when it comes to live performance. The Wedding Singer. We've all seen the movie with Adam Sandler. But in the real world, being in a wedding band is more than just playing the first dance. It's about not only having the right setlist, but also having the right members of the band, the right production, and the right mindset when it comes to doing business. Mike Zabrin is doing all of that and more. Originating from his original music band, Mike Zabrin's Funktastic, he performs every year on WGN Midday News, WGN's Nick Digilio Show, and with notable write ups in Bass Player Magazine, Jazz Corner, and hundreds of world-wide publications. His albums feature members of Kool & The Gang, Fishbone, and more. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Mike had his start playing the blues, Throughout college, he toured with Chicago Blues Hall of Famers playing at staple blues venues like Kingston Mines and Buddy Guy's Legends. During this time, and an advocate for music education, Mike was the GM of School of Rock. Mike took his band to hundreds of venues and festivals. Over 40 Park Districts have Funktastic for their Summer Concert Series and they've opened for national acts like WAR. Having the best musicians Chicago has to offer under his wing, Mike took the wedding and corporate event industry by storm with his company, Funktastic Productions. www.funktasticproductions.com www.funktasticchats.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). What's the difference between Country music in the USA, and the rest of the World? We get the opportunity to dig into to that idea with Australian songwriter and recording artist Lily Grace, who shares with us what its like to be on the other side of the ocean, and what it takes to break into the home of Country music, Nashville, Tennessee. Naturally gifted, Lily Grace began singing at 10 years of age. She dived deeper into music a mere four years ago, when she was gifted her first guitar at the age of 11. Her determination to self-fund her own equipment saw her busking at local markets, and soon after, attracting her to local cafes, restaurants, events and festivals. With several years' stage experience already behind her, Lily Grace delivers her own storytelling originals alongside a vast collection of popular, crowd-pleasing favorites from contemporary, classics, and country. The emotions of love, determination, kindness, gratitude and pure joy pour forth in every one of her performances. Lily Grace is a sought-after talent, having recently opened for Amber Lawrence and Catherine Britt's ‘Love and Lies Tour' across Queensland, joining Tania Kernaghan in concert, touring with James Blundell, being announced in the line-up of emerging artists for the Gympie Muster and performing at the Groundwater Country Music Festival this year. An exciting collaboration has been in the making for Lily Grace this year, with the legendary country music artist, James Blundell. The two penned a song together earlier this year, co-headlined a concert on the Gold Coast and recently completed the ‘Annie June' tour, where they took their co-written song to stages across Queensland, following on from its successful release in May. The excitement around the track helped it reach the Top 10 on the ‘Australian Country Radio' chart, #17 on the ‘Hottest Australian Country Hits' chart, #9 on ‘Country Radio Charts', #31 on the ‘Countrytown Hot 50 Music Chart'. A live video stream on country radio program, KIX Live, and with the official music video being played in high rotation on Foxtel's & Fetch CMT TV channel reaching #3 in ‘Today's Top 15', also featuring in ‘Official Top 30', ‘Fresh Country', and ‘Aussie Country' programs. Off the back of a successful debut duo release, Lily released her debut solo single in August. ‘Sixteen Wishes' is an uplifting and summery track, which rocketed to #3 on the Australian Country iTunes Chart and #27 on the Australian All Genres iTunes Chart. Within a week of it's release, it was the #1 streamed and downloaded song for Australian radio airplay. ‘Sixteen Wishes' continues to climb the Official Top 30 on CMT television, currently placed at #21. The future certainly looks bright for this young artist shortly venturing to the Tamworth Country Music Festival with a plethora of gigs lined-up and semi-finalist nominations in 9 categories of the Tamworth Songwriting Association awards. Born in Romania, raised in Germany, and now living in Los Angeles CA, classical guitarist and instructor Mircea Gogoncea joins us on the show. As an teacher of the instrument, Mircea believes that its important to start at an early age when learning the craft. This is where the company Tonebase comes in. The company which has been described as “Netflix meets Masterclass”. has a firm belief that knowledge is meant to be shared. The passing down of information from one generation to the next is the only way a culture can continue to develop and grow. Nowhere is this more true than in music. Without a great teacher, students at every skill level cannot progress sufficiently. That is why it is crucial for all students to have access to the best instructors possible through every stage of their musical development. Unfortunately, for too long, the knowledge of the world's greatest musicians has been accessible to only a select few - those with the necessary talent and funds to attend the most elite universities and conservatories. At tonebase, their mission is to change that standard by democratizing high-level music education around the world. By combining music, passion, and technology, we aim to build the go-to resource for anyone learning an instrument anywhere. Mircea Gogoncea is a Romanian-German guitarist based in Los Angeles. He has performed in over 350 concerts on 5 continents and has been awarded 169 prizes. His interactive concerts feature own compositions for guitar, live electronics, and audience participation, challenging the traditional separation between the roles of performers and listeners. He holds six university degrees, including a Doctor of Musical Arts from USC. He is Head of Guitar at tonebase, the leading online music education institution. Welcome to the world of Johnathan Pushkar. Singer, Songwriter, Social Media Influencer. Growing up south of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Johnathan at a very young age, fell in love with the sound of The Beach Boys and The Beatles. While in school, he performed in a talent show with a 50's and 60's tribute band (playing drums), and the response from the audience had him hooked. He made the decision to attend Belmont University to further his music education, and while there made the decision to record an album project of the songs he had written. Out of that came a record deal, and the rest is history. One of the things that Johnathan discovered while putting his game plan together for his musical future, was don't let other people say no for you. Don't be afraid to ask. The “ask” is always worth it. Also, although he wasn't looking for a record deal, when offered one, he took the time to research and determine what was best for his career. We talk with Johnathan about this, along with his experience becoming an influencer for Lego, and how that toy company became an integral part in his music, especially when it came to working with the folks who run the Elvis Presley estate, and Graceland. She is undeniably one of the most eloquently emotive vocalists of modern times. In the studio with us is award winning recording artist Lorrie Morgan. Lorrie shares with us what it has taken to be successful, the perils and pitfalls that have gone along with it, and the desire she has to keep going. Morgan also shares with us how she and her late husband, and Country music legend (and recent Country Music Hall of Fame inductee) Keith Whitley met, her time with Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and her close relationship with Naomi Judd. Lorrie also explains how she has become the official Ambassador for “Nashville Hot Chicken”, and with the help of some of her famous friends, have created a music video promoting the Nashville staple. Lorrie Morgan has been around great songs all her life. She is a Nashville native who is the daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member George Morgan. She made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry stage at age 13, singing "Paper Roses." Her father died suddenly of a heart attack at age 51. She was 16 at the time and just beginning her musical career. Lorrie Morgan began making her own records shortly thereafter and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry at just 24 years old. Morgan married fellow country singer Keith Whitley in 1986. She was signed to RCA Records in 1987, and her onslaught of hits began the following year. Whitley's tragic death of an alcohol overdose in 1989 left her a widowed working mother. Their duet "Til a Tear Becomes a Rose" earned her a 1990 CMA award. Her first three albums, Leave the Light On (1989), Something in Red (1991) and Watch Me (1992), all earned Platinum Record awards. Her Greatest Hits collection (1999) is also Platinum. War Paint (1994), Greater Need (1996) and Shakin' Things Up (1997) are all Gold Record winners. She sang "The Sad Cafe" on Common Threads: Songs of the Eagles, which was named the CMA Album of the Year in 1994. Country fans voted Lorrie Morgan their TNN/Music City News Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998. Lorrie Morgan, the first woman in her genre to begin her career with three consecutive Platinum albums, is back in the studio with award-winning producer Richard Landis, working on a new album. It is sure to be yet another collection showcasing the rainbow of emotions, from darkest heartache to bright, shiny humor, that is the hallmark of Morgan's range. Concurrently, Morgan is working on a second project of original songs co-written with Larry Gatlin. "Where I am in my life right now, I'm not afraid to express what I feel," she says. “I'm not afraid to express my views on anything, especially on being a woman and my experiences in this business and in life.” Morgan is known for her lustrous vocal phrasing and the down-to-earth believability of her torchy performances. On records such as “A Picture of Me Without You" and "I Guess You Had to Be There," the ache is palpable. She is feisty and sassy on "Watch Me," "What Part of No" "Five Minutes" and "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." She has kicked up her stiletto heels in fun on her hits "Except for Monday" and "Go Away." On her epic "Something in Red" she is an honest, struggling everywoman. She has been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a breadwinner and, ultimately, a survivor. In many ways, Lorrie is a living, breathing country song, and she knows what she sings. She is a peerless song interpreter, drawing from a deep personal well that spans enormous tenderness to cheeky hutzpah. Whether covering a classic or sharing one of her own songs, Morgan is truly a song stylist in the grandest tradition. "I have always been a songwriter and I do love to write," she comments. "But I'm only comfortable co-writing with a few people, and I don't like appointment writing at all. Plus, I'm not one of those people who says, 'If I didn't write it, I'm not going to record it.' If somebody else's song is better, I'm going to record it and not my own. Morgan has recorded in collaboration with her father, as well as Whitley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Tammy Wynette, The Beach Boys, Dolly Parton, Andy Williams, the New World Philharmonic, and Pam Tillis. She has toured with George Jones and shared a stage with Jerry Lee Lewis, newly inducted into the Country Music Hall Fame along with Whitley. “My children and I are thrilled to see Keith's name added to the list of stars who've earned their place in the Country Music Hall of Fame,” she says. “It is a well-deserved honor, though Keith himself would've been painfully humbled. I am happy for his family and the many, many fans who continue to point to Keith as one of the all-time greats.” "My dad used to say, 'You should never take yourself too seriously,' and I got my sense of humor from my dad. I love to have fun. I've reached the age where I feel that I deserve good company around me, people who can make me laugh, who love music and who love to have a good time.” The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). On the show today is John Kohl, who is the Co-Founder and CEO of TuneGO. We discuss the explosion of NFT's and how they're affecting the music industry. This part of the industry has yet to fully embrace technology. It's so fragmented that the information is all over the place and not properly collected or organized. Every single year there are billions of dollars of royalties that are collected but not distributed to the creative community. Until TuneGO and their Vault, there was no unified system that goes from the origin of the creation of the art all the way through to commercialization. TuneGO is a Web3 tech company for the music industry. Their patented technology—the TuneGO Vault—creates the world's most advanced end-to-end solution for securing content and creative rights, distributing music and video to digital platforms, and creating NFTs. The foundation of the music industry, especially music royalties, is extremely antiquated compared to other industries. TuneGONFT, is their new marketplace which secures creative rights in the TuneGO Vault and on the Flow (by Dapper Labs) blockchain. This forward-thinking technology certifies the “DNA” of a song, video, or digital artwork prior to the minting of the NFT, maximizing the value in the eyes of collectors. In addition to securing all rights, this first-of-its-kind solution enables artists to, mint NFTs, distribute their music to streaming platforms, monetize their music on social media, and license their content for TV, films, and video games—all on one unified platform. Using TuneGONFT, NFT buyers and collectors can gain secure, private access to the patented TuneGO Vault after buying an NFT, where they can view the original creative rights, as well as access, view, and download all of the digital files included on the NFT. In 2021 NFT sales reached $25 billion growing from a mere $95 million in 2020. That's an over 26,000% increase, and we see them growing and evolving especially within the gaming and music industries. While there is still a bit of a learning curve with NFTs and a consumer education process, NFTs create a stronger relationship between creators and their fans. We currently live in a technology world built for consumers, but Web3 and NFTs are creating a world built for creators plus collectors and enthusiasts. All of us have our favorite band or artist we love to listen to. Most of us can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to actually meet their idol, let alone hang out with them. David Stark did just that… and more. Author of the book “It's All Too Much”, David describes what it was like growing up in North London in the 1960's as a dedicated fan of The Beatles. From riding his bike to Abbey Road Studios to seeing John Lennon get out of his Rolls Royce limousine and entering the legendary studio (and telling David to move his bicycle in the process), to gatecrashing the Yellow Submarine film premiere in 1968 at the age of 15, eventually winding up sitting in the second row next to Keith Richards, right behind Paul and John, to meeting Sir Paul years later when he inducted David as a ‘Companion of LIPA' in Liverpool for his work with songwriter students. He shares his stories of hanging out with John and Yoko, how he was invited to their final concert, but due to the last minute change of venue (the now legendary “rooftop concert”) missing it because of being in school, but receiving a consolation prize of sorts, along with a signed letter from Ringo. In addition to being an author, David is a life-long drummer who plays with the Trembling Wilburys tribute band, as well as having played with The Quarrymen. We all have an idea on what it takes to get the music process from creation to consumption. The path taken has changed dramatically and historically over the past 20 years or so. At the same time, the one thing that has remained constant is that people love to create, and people love to listen. With all the new technology and ways to distribute music, how does the creative person, while rising above the clutter of all the releases out in the world, ensure that you get properly compensated for your work? The consumer end of things have stabilized to a point where the listener can find your music, but at the same time, can the money trail find you as the official owner and registrant of your material? What if you're a co-writer on a song? Do you know the legal name(s) of the other writers on your song? Do you have the proper metadata to ensure that your songs are registered properly? There are 5 identifiers which control who's doing what when it comes to registering your song, and these are used worldwide. Niclas Molinder and his partners have created a new company called “Session” which can help simplify the process for you, and code your creative content with those five identifiers that will help smooth the revenue stream for you. Niclas Molinder is an award-winning songwriter, music producer and musician who also leads several organizations focused on transforming the music industry's management of data and rights for the benefit of creators. After 20 years of songwriting and producing for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige and The Jonas Brothers, as well as running his own publishing company RedFly Music – the Swedish entrepreneur has become the figurehead for pioneering solutions for the massive value gap in the music industry. In 2019, Niclas Molinder partnered with Bjorn Ulvaeus (of ABBA fame) and Max Martin to found Session, the world's first independent global hub for authoritative music metadata sourced from creators, built to ensure creators get the credit they deserve. Molinder's vision is to bring the global music industry and technologists together to create a standard for how music creators and their representatives are identified in their contribution to songs - so everyone can get credited and correctly compensated when their music is used. In 2016, Niclas also founded Music Rights Awareness Foundation, an apolitical foundation that works to provide an educational solution to the value gap in industry, by increasing knowledge of music rights worldwide, adjusted to the future industry. www.session.id The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). In today's music scene, the independent artist is King (or Queen). No longer tied to having a record deal in order to be successful, the Indie Artist also doesn't fit the normal mold for pre-existing formats. You need someone who can help when the creative decisions become business decisions, and vice versa. This is where Talya Elitzer and her company Godmode come into play. Meet Talya Elitzer. She, along with co-founder Nick Sylvester created the GRAMMY-nominated artist development company in 2017. The duo are behind high-taste breakouts such as JPEGMAFIA, Channel Tres, and Yaeji, and their Los Angeles-based headquarters has been the secret creative hub for artists and producers like Lil Nas X, James Blake, Take A Daytrip, Omer Fedi, Grimes, SG Lewis, Noname, and more. Godmode takes an unorthodox approach to artist development and marketing, with an unusually high track record for breaking artists who don't quite fit into pre-existing formats. They focus on building sustainable operations for their artists, so they can maintain an uncompromising approach to their work. Artists such as JPEGMAFIA, Channel Tres, and LoveLeo have multi-million dollar touring, brand, and merchandise operations, with joint ventures at Universal, Warner, and Sony Talya Elitzer began her career at WME, looking after the touring businesses of Britney Spears, M.I.A., and Grace Jones. She moved into an A&R position at Capitol Records, working on projects for Katy Perry, Beck, and Sky Ferreira before moving full-time into godmode, where she leads management and label operations. Getting into the music business is not easy. It's competitive, crowded, and the success of making it a career can be challenging on a good day. Factor in those players who say they can “guarantee” you that success for a fee, and all of a sudden things get really complicated… and potentially expensive without much to show for all of your hard work. Enter Vinny Ribas, who is the founder and CEO of Indie Connect. He's recently created a new platform called “Cartne”, which as it develops and evolves, will hopefully take out some of the guesswork of what works, and what doesn't, and help you avoid the perils and pitfalls of the music industry. Cartne is a program which once fully operational will provide nearly 100 online videos and courses from some of the top industry experts on what to look for, how to avoid scams, and minimize the mistakes others before you have made in their careers. Currently in its Beta testing, Ribas is seeking out interested industry leaders, musicians, songwriters, and anyone involved in the music business to share their stories, creating a library of knowledge for those willing to learn more about the right way of doing business… reducing the risk, and taking the mystery out of the music industry. www.cartne.com www.indieconnect.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). On this episode, Danny Zelisko shares with us his forty years in the music business, producing over 34,000 shows in that time. He talks about what it was like to get started in the business as a stagehand (including being a security guard on Alice Cooper shows), what it was like to work with concert and tour producer legend Bill Graham, and how he and Bill put together one of the largest music festivals ever, just for a little film called “A Star Is Born” starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Danny Zelisko began producing shows in Arizona in 1974. He founded Evening Star Productions, and has become known as one of the USA's best promoters and talent buyers since. The first room he steadily booked starting in 1976 was Dooley's Nightclub (750 capacity) in Tempe. Acts such as The Police, Cheap Trick, Pat Benatar, Talking Heads, KISS, Bon Jovi, No Doubt and Nirvana (among many others) performed at the intimate venue from its opening in 1976, until it closed after several ownership and name changes (aka After the Gold Rush and Electric Ballroom) in the mid-1990′s. Nightclub concerts by recording stars began happening all over the country, with Zelisko leading his territory in this area of booking. Zelisko and his team produced hundreds of new and veteran bands in facilities across the valley. Since that time, Danny has gone on to produce over 35,000 shows, and has now written a book titled “All Excess; Occupation Concert Promoter”, where he talks about his time working with such greats as Alice Cooper, Bill Graham, and so many others during his 40 years in the music business. www.dzplive.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). If you're a musician of any caliber that's been around for more than a few years, then you know what the annual NAMM Show is. NAMM which is the acronym for the National Association of Music Merchants, which was founded in 1901. Each year the NAMM Show hosts literally the largest display of musical instruments, professional sound reinforcement equipment, and studio gear. In 2020, 116,000 people attended the annual event held in Anaheim California, known as Winter NAMM. Its sister show called “Summer NAMM” is held each year in Nashville TN. However in 2021, with Covid in full swing, both the Anaheim, along with the Nashville Trade Shows were canceled due to the pandemic. Things started to get back on track in 2021 with a scaled down version of Summer NAMM taking place in Nashville, although the Anaheim show continued to be on hiatus… until this year. 2022 will see for the first time in history the Winter NAMM Show taking place on June 3rd thru the 5th. We talk with Joe Lamond, who is the President and CEO of NAMM, as he shares the following: How he got to his position starting out initially as the drummer with recording artist Tommy Tutone, and also as the tour manager with Todd Rundgren Why the show is now being held in June, along with the move planned for April for 2023, eventually returning to January in 2024 How the show is a resource for prosumers as well as professional musicians, creators, producers, songwriters Joe also shares some memories along the way during his tenure at NAMM, including one Saturday morning conversation with Ray Charles on a golf cart while attending the show. Joe Lamond is the president and CEO of NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants, a global not-for-profit 501(c)(6) trade association representing more than 10,000 manufacturers and retailers of musical instruments, professional sound, and live event production products. The association's mission is to strengthen the music products industry and promote the pleasures and benefits of making music. Since 2001, Lamond has led the talented team at NAMM to achieve this mission through what the association calls its “Circle of Benefits” business model, reinvesting the proceeds of its successful trade shows into grants, scholarships, scientific research, industry promotions, and public and government relations programs. These efforts have contributed to increased support for music education in our schools and greater awareness around the world of the benefits of active music making for people of all ages. The business of music catalog acquisition has become a hot topic of discussion lately. With the sales of such song catalogs once belonging to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Shakira, John Lennon, Ryan Tedder, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, 50 Cent, Nelly, and many more, it's become a sellers paradise. But why? We talk with music publisher Trey Bruce, who is the owner and President of Galore Entertainment, a new entertainment company that develops artists and publishing assets through exploitation & sync licensing. Emmy Award winning songwriter, Trey Bruce, moved to Nashville just in time for the 1990s Country Music boom. Trey was a rock drummer from Memphis so… what could go wrong? Luckily, as an unpublished songwriter, Trey's first demo got cut almost immediately by Shelby Lynn and was a top 15 hit so, as a result he signed his first publishing deal with MCA Music in November of 1989. During the MCA years Trey had a few minor cuts and then, his first #1 single, on Randy Travis called, “Look Heart No Hands”. After three years at MCA, in 1993, Trey co-founded a small indie publishing company, Big Tractor Music, with renowned record producer Scott Hendricks and there Trey received 13 ASCAP Awards, an Emmy Award, five #1 singles, multiple top 5 and top 10 radio hits and an Academy Of Country Music, Song Of The Year nomination. During the Tractor years Trey developed a love for coffee and long nights in the studio so he became a record producer. In 2005 Trey started a publishing/artist development joint venture with Chrysalis Music in Nashville. At Chrysalis Trey searched out new artists before anyone else had discovered them. Trey signed and developed teenagers, Charlie Worsham now on Warner Brothers, John & TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne now on Universal Records, Chris Janson also on Warner Brothers and American Idol's 12th season runner-up, Kree Harrison. During this period Trey was writing songs with Scott Weiland, Billy Gibbons, Kerry Kurt Phillips, LeAnn Rimes, CarrieUnderwood, Katherine McPhee, Duff McKagan and Richard Marx. Trey wrote and helped build, from scratch, a catalog of more than 800 songs in 5 years, as well as cuts in the Rock format and two #1 singles in Australia and Canada. On this episode, we talk with Dave Philp and Steve Marcone with regards to their book “Managing Your Band: A Guide to Artist Management”. This book is considered the go-to guide for artist management in the new music industry, especially independent artists taking the DIY route. Industry insiders Steve and Dave tackle the work and knowledge required of an artist manager and band member, focusing on earning revenue from an artist's three major revenue streams: songwriting and publishing, live performance, and recording. The book investigates the roles of the many industry intermediaries, illustrating how many of today's artists, including DIY artists, function as their own entertainment companies. This seventh edition of the book includes updated information for the twenty-first-century artist and manager, including key information on the impacts of COVID-19 on the industry. In the late 1960's and early 70's, as a trumpet player in a rock music group, Steve Marcone, Ed. D recorded for Epic Records and toured the country taking an active role in the creative and managerial aspects of the ensemble. In 1973, he joined the faculty of the School of Music at Syracuse University and stayed until 1984. During that time, he was also Vice President of the Syracuse Musicians Association (Local #78). In 1984, he came to the William Paterson University of New Jersey where he was Chairperson of the Music Department for 15 years, and for two years, was Interim Dean of the College of the Arts and Communication. He retired July 1, 2020 as the Coordinator of the Billboard Magazinerecognized undergraduate and MBA Music & Entertainment Industries programs. He is the author (along with Dave Philp) of Managing Your Band, in its 7th edition. He has written articles for many publications and has lectured at numerous universities and National and Regional Conferences. He was a frequent lecturer on Rock Music for the NJ Council on the Humanities. He is the co-host of the Music Biz101 & Moreradio show/podcast. It's one of the most ambitious and important projects an organization can undertake to future-proof its operations. It's also become a key differentiator in which companies will merely survive and which will truly thrive in the years ahead. We're talking about a “digital core transformation,” and it is a truly massive undertaking. That's why IDC created the “Best in Future of Digital Infrastructure Awards” -- a way of recognizing organizations that have demonstrated innovation and excellence in preparing for the “next normal”. And on this episode of Future Enterprise, you'll meet three companies that have done just that -- successfully leveraged digital technologies to dramatically improve the way they do business. Together, Joe Pucciarelli, Group Vice President and IT Executive Advisor at IDC and Rick Villars, IDC's Group Vice-President of Worldwide Research, will hear from: Jim Diorio, Senior Vice-President of Global Technical Services at Tapestry Inc; Steve Samarge, Chief Technology Officer, Information and Digital Systems at Toyota Financial Services; and Bob Bender, Chief Technology Officer at Founders Federal Credit Union. Their stories will inform, entertain, and even inspire anyone who may be thinking about undertaking a similar transformation for their business.
As a songwriter, you have to be a student of your genre. Whether it be Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, or Country. You have to learn to keep your eyes on your own paper as you create this body of work, and be fearless in doing so. At the same time, there are so many questions when it comes to not only writing songs, but what to do with your creation afterwards. It's what goes into the song that makes it successful. Imagine building a home. You wouldn't live in that place with nothing in it to make it feel like home. It's the furniture that makes the place feel warm and cozy. The same goes for a song. So where does one start? Questions arise such as what is a song plugger? What do they do? Do you know that there are two parts to the publishing deal? Are you better as an independent songwriter signed to a small, boutique publishing deal, or does getting signed to a major publishing house make more sense? Can you be the songwriter, AND be the publisher at the same time? And how does one go about getting their foot in the doors when it comes to getting your songs heard? Are you actually ready? Nancy Deckant who is the CEO of Discover Sooner, answers these questions…. and more! Nancy is the General Manager and partner of Nashville Cool! Publishing, a songwriter and tech entrepreneur. As a songwriter, she won first place in the Indie International Songwriters Competition. As an independent publisher, she's helped advance the careers of songwriters and successfully built song plugging practices. Nancy is also the founder and CEO of Discover Sooner, a company that connects songwriters to publishers. www.discoversooner.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived).
