Ever wondered how books get published? It's not an easy process says Arsim Shillova, co-founder and CEO of Libraro, a platform that will allow the general public to have access to unpublished books – and help publishers decide which to support. Arsim, an author himself, was disheartened after seeing first-hand what it takes to get a book published. “I actually wrote a book and decided to try and get it published through the traditional way of sending it to a literary agent and to my disappointment, I never got a response,” he recounts.Out of curiosity, he decided to visit the publishing company to get a better understanding of the process. As he tells Charles Miller on the latest episode of CoinGeek Conversations, “when I entered this office, I realized why I never got a response, because the office was full of manuscripts. Physically it was impossible to read that many. But technology should be able to solve this problem.”Arsim says that authors like him stop writing after experiencing rejection through the traditional process. With Libraro, he wants to give writers an opportunity to get their work out to the public. As he explains, Libraro allows authors to write from scratch or upload their content onto the platform. Artificial intelligence will then provide a synopsis of the manuscript as well as offer suggestions for possible improvements. Once the content goes live, readers can access the author's work with an option for both parties to engage with one another. “It's almost like another social community platform,” he says.    The platform utilizes blockchain in such a way that content on Libraro is recorded on the ledger: it is immutable and offers a layer of protection: “intellectual property rights are something of a concern to everyone out there who writes something,” he says. “We will use blockchain to timestamp the manuscript, so we know that there is a digital record and it sits in blockchain with your credentials.”Libaro is currently in talks with the London Writers' Salon, a writers' group with twenty-thousand members. “The idea is we want to channel these writers to our platform,” Arsim says. From books to sports. Next up, Charles speaks to James Hart, Founder and CEO of Rumblebox, a platform that makes use of NFTs to fund new sports leagues and events. As James explains, sports fans will be allowed to crowdfund through Rumblebox in exchange for benefits such as tickets, VIP access to the athletes, merchandise and monetary rewards.James says their plan is to target the Gen Z. To start with, they intend to focus on emerging sports such as esports and YouTube boxing: “the younger fans that are more NFT-friendly, are more likely to have completely different tastes and in the way that they consume sports, for example, they like esports way more than football, and in some countries they like YouTube boxing over traditional boxing”.Part of Rumblebox's strategy is to partner with an athlete or influencer and to leverage their audience by having these personalities act as endorsers of the new sports league or event. As James explains, Rumblebox will work similarly to NBA Top Shots, a popular NFT marketplace that allows users to trade on the platform regardless of their knowledge of the technology behind it. Just like NBA Top Shots, which has a million users, Rumblebox will price its products in US dollars. According to James, their objective is to create new sports franchises or sports leagues that will bring long term value: “the more profitable and more organic growth that they [athletes and influencers] get for the fan base for those leagues and events, the more valuable a season ticket or a VIP access pass is going to be.”Watch Arsim and James talk

So today we are going to go down the rabbit hole of NFTs. What the heck is an NFT. It is a Non Fungible Token. Basically, an NFT is a completely original digital file or a digital collectable which is registered on a blockchain ledger just like any cryptocurrency. But unlike cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin or Ethereum, an NFT is totally unique and because it lives on the blockchain it verifies who is the rightful owner of this one-of-a-kind digital collectable file.In February 2021, digital artist Peebles sold a digital artwork for $69.3 million at auction. You heard correctly almost $70 million for a digital file. The founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, sold his very first tweet as an NFT for $2.9 million. It took me a minute to understand what these things were and then it clicked. NFTs are digital baseball cards, comic books, Garbage Pail Kids or Pokemon cards. They are just a digital version and in many ways better because you know exactly how many copies exist. The NBA is sell "moments" as NFTs through NBA Top Shots. Basically, they are selling highlight clips as NFT and they are killing it. Fans of the NBA are gobbling these NFTs as fast as they are released. I really think there is now one doing NFTs better than the NBA right now.Musicians are having amazing success selling NFTs directly to their fans. This is turning the established music industry on its head. NFTs are essentially killing off the middle man. No more label, just a direct relationship with the artist's fans. The other amazing thin about NFTs is that the artist continues to make money on every sale of the NFT forever. Let me explain. When an artist creates a NFT by minting it. Minting is the process of create the digital file (NFT) and placing it on the blockchain. The artist then sets the residual percentage every time the NFT sells. So if I mint a short film and sell it for $500. I get $500. Now, if the new owner sells it 2 years from now for $10,000 I get 10% of that sale. Every time that NFT is resold I get my cut. All transactions transparent. All on the blockchain. So how can filmmakers make money? There are so many options because NFTs are in their infancy. Everyone is trying  to figure out how to use them  in indie film. Some ideas are:Selling the distribution rights to the entire film, like Kevin Smith is doing with is latest film KilljoySelling the distribution rights to your film in shares like the indie film LotawanaCreate  an NFT to a short film to finance itSell NFT collectables from the filmFund raise your film's budget with NFTsThese are just some ideas. I decide to throw my hat in the ring and created an experiment. I minted a few NFTs for my first short film BROKEN and some "legacy NFTs" of the first ever filmmaking tutorials ever uploaded to YouTube. Here is the description of one of the NFTs.This NFT is called Muzzle Flash Breakdown and is one of the first filmmaking tutorials to ever be uploaded to YouTube. It was uploaded on August 28, 2006 by filmmaker, author and Indie Film Hustle Podcast host Alex Ferrari from his 2005 award-winning short film BROKEN. It was taken from the best-selling DVD of the film. That DVD was one of the first indie short films to ever create a massive collection of tutorials and making of videos that explained how to make a low-budget independent film with off-the-shelf software and digital consumer cameras.  This is part of a limited series of filmmaking tutorials that were uploaded to YouTube from the short film BROKEN. All the videos were uploaded and released on the same day in 2006. The external link attached to this NFT will show the original upload to YouTube.Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFPoBZY5BrAWhen you purchase this NFT you will also gain access to the short film BROKEN, the entire collection of tutorials and commentary tracks via private link and passcode. You will also receive the original QuickTime file that was uploaded to YouTube. To access my NFTs go to: www.ifhnft.comI released three of 6 of the total filmmaking tutorials I uploaded on YouTune back in Aug 2006. If these sell out I'll upload the rest and maybe some of my other popular short films I directed over the years. I wanted to give you an example of what an independent film NFT looked like and this is totally an experiment to see what happens.Maybe I'll never sell an NFT, maybe I sell  them three years from now or maybe they will sell out in 15 min. Who knows. What I am excited about is the potential of what this could mean for the indie filmmaking community. In this episode I break down everything you need to know about NFTs, how to make money with them and more. Enjoy!

Jeff Ifrah: US regulators odds-on to approve in-game tokens

CoinGeek Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2021 26:41

Top online gaming lawyer Jeff Ifrah says that US regulators are unlikely to have a problem with tokens that are “offered on the game to extend play, to skip levels, to gain certain powers.” The news will be welcomed by game developers keen to monetize through the integration of cryptocurrency wallets and blockchain technology. Jeff is also optimistic about the recent flurry of activity around NFTs. He said “it’s a very exciting space right now and I really hope the regulators don’t ruin it.” He singled out NBA Top Shots, saying that the endorsement of the NBA and stars like LeBron James could have a positive influence on regulators. However, Jeff, speaking on this week’s episode of CoinGeek Conversations, did stress that in the US, regulation varies depending on what state you’re in. He explained to Becky Liggero that it ultimately comes down to state regulators who have “to decide whether or not he or she is going to permit an operator to accept crypto.” He pointed out that when it comes to using cryptocurrency for gambling in America, “there’s no prohibition that’s written into the law about it. It’s just that the regulators haven’t approved it as a form of alternative payment.” This is because regulators are more concerned with onboarding payment systems like banks and credit companies first. But Jeff believes that regulators will address cryptocurrency, they just want to get traditional payments sorted first.  Lots of states in the US require crypto companies to obtain a money transmitter license to operate. Jeff warns, “if you were to accept some sort of payment processing that was not licensed, you would not just be, as a processor, in trouble with the regulator, but you’d be putting the entire license of the operator at risk as well for doing business with an unlicensed supplier.”  On the use of blockchain, Jeff tells Becky that regulators are likely to need only the lowest level of licensing. They will want to know who owns the technology, but nothing more complicated than that. This will be music to the ears of companies using blockchain to develop new gaming systems that are ‘provably fair’, in a way that is transparent to all users. Once a casino can prove it’s trustworthy, users are much more likely to game there. It’s not all plain sailing for the use of digital currency in iGaming though as Jeff warns that any tokens “offered to an entire market through an ICO… that’s going to be a problem.” He also cautions that even if a site is being operated from a country where Bitcoin and online gambling are totally legal and properly licensed, if you allow “someone who’s physically located in the United States to access your technology, you have opened yourself up to risk.” Overall, regulators in the US have been slow to take account of cryptocurrency in the online gaming space. But Jeff is hopeful that an injection of cash could be the answer. He believes that “state regulators need to set aside money from their licensing regime” to clarify the rules and enforce regulation where necessary.

Collector items. No one is a better sports memorabilia collector than Denver, Colorado's own Marshall Fogel.  The world of collectibles has been booming during the pandemic. Marshall returns to Craig's Lawyers' Lounge to explain how he first got involved in 1989 in Chicago.   There's much more to Marshall Fogel than baseball cards. Listen to this legendary lawyer describe his youth in Denver, his sensational years as a prosecutor under Denver DA Bert Keating, and the 23,000 clients he has worked for in private practice.   Marshall Fogel is a historian at heart. He also likes presenting a good show. Listen to great stories about Judges O. Otto Moore, Orrelle Weeks, and Gary Jackson. Learn how Marshall desegregated the Denver Athletic Club. Find out the true Jewish histories of Maurice Rose and Elvis Presley.   From generation to generation. Marshall knows the analog world of collectibles. My next guest, Smarter than Average Joe, knows digital and a new investment opportunity called Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). One superhot sports-related site is NBA Top Shots. Find out why. And then learn about digital art. And bitcoin.   Collectible investing involves any product you can buy, own, and sell. Dave Gunders is our Troubadour, and his music is available digitally via my show and Soundcloud. This week, Dave delights us with Only a Rock in the Road. That is a great outlook and song for any investor.   You'd be wise and happy to invest some time in this one-of-a-kind podcast. Download it. Save it. You never know what it might be worth someday.
