Django Nudo and The Smut Peddler welcome Robert Page, the visionary creator behind the revolutionary sex education series "The Lover's Guide". Page delights listeners with extraordinary behind-the-scenes stories from his illustrious career, including a surreal phone call from Stanley Kubrick seeking advice on directing intimate scenes for "Eyes Wide Shut" and an unexpected encounter with tabloid journalism involving Heather Mills McCartney. Perhaps most surprisingly, Page reveals how his educational series may have influenced the Catholic Church to soften its stance on masturbation after the programme demonstrated how widespread the practice is among both men and women. The conversation thoroughly explores the remarkable origin story of "The Lover's Guide" in the early 1990s, strategically positioned in a unique cultural window between older clinical sex education films and the explosion of internet pornography. Page recounts his pivotal meeting with British film censor Jim Ferman during the AIDS crisis, where he unexpectedly received permission to show explicit sexual content for educational purposes, including erections, intercourse, and oral sex—provided they "didn't linger" on any particular activity and included a doctor as presenter. This breakthrough allowed Page to create what would become a cultural phenomenon that invested the equivalent of £5 million (in today's money) in production values.Page shares fascinating insights into the series' development philosophy, explaining their deliberate approach to portraying intimacy with genuine warmth and respect rather than clinical detachment or pornographic sensationalism. He discusses the considerable challenges of finding performers willing to appear in such groundbreaking content, the scandals that erupted when some were discovered to have pornographic backgrounds. The series ultimately proved so popular that it knocked Hollywood blockbusters like "Die Hard" and "The Little Mermaid" off the video charts and was purchased predominantly by women (55%).The conversation takes several poignant turns as Page reveals personal struggles during production, including his marriage falling apart while creating a series about enhancing relationships. He also shares the tragic story of the series' star couple, Wendy Anne Paige and her husband Tony, who became celebrities through the programme before experiencing a downward spiral that ended with Wendy's death "in penury" in December 2024.There's revealing anecdotes about international reception, including unauthorised Chinese translations that sold millions without compensation, censorship battles in Japan, and Dutch companies that purchased distribution rights only to bury the product while creating their own competing versions. Page expresses particular pride in the series' unexpected success in France, noting the irony of "the English teaching the French about sex."The conversation concludes with Page discussing the enduring legacy of "The Lover's Guide" thirty years after its initial release, with both The Guardian and The Sun recently publishing features acknowledging its continuing relevance. Page shares touching stories about receiving thousands of letters from couples whose relationships were saved by the series and expresses hope that its core messages about communication, respect, and genuine intimacy can still positively impact relationships today—values he believes are needed more than ever in our increasingly divided world.Throughout the interview, Page's passion for his groundbreaking work shines through, along with his sense of humour and genuine belief in the power of education to foster healthier, more loving relationships. This episode offers listeners not just a nostalgic look back at a cultural phenomenon, but a thoughtful reflection on how approaches to sex education have evolved over decades and what might be lost or gained in our modern digital landscape.

Robert Page, a professor in the Departments of Clinical Pharmacy and Physical Medicine at the University of Colorado, joins Tim to talk about some new developments in determining significant cardiovascular risks associated with marijuana use, regardless of the reason. He's the lead author on a new paper from the American Heart Association that exposes major risks. We talk about his paper, some of the myths surrounding medical marijuana usage, and what it all means. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Robert_Page_-_Weed_and_Heart_Health_auphonic.mp3 If I were to use a term with you, a propaganda term, do you think you'd fall for it? Let's give it a shot. So, here's the term. What do you think of when I say, “medical marijuana?” Now, before we go any further, I need to give you a quick history lesson on the field where I work. I work in public relations. The founding fathers of this field actually called it the practice of propaganda back in those early days. And they weren't wrong. Some 100 years ago, propagandists sold everything from war bonds to cigarettes, from oil and gasoline to railroad travel. And when something went wrong, they became spin doctors. They played with the truth, and it wasn't always ethical. Since then, the field has done much to improve its own image by establishing ethical standards, but this doesn't mean that “spin” has just faded away. The battle over the truth is never-ending. If you can believe this, back in the 1930s and 40s, the advertising and public relations fields convinced Americans that smoking cigarettes was actually good for their health. At that time, the medical community had not yet discovered the link between smoking and lung cancer or lung disease. In fact, most doctors smoked cigarettes. Of course, there was evidence all around them that lung cancer was on the rise, but no one blamed cigarettes at first. Some tobacco companies even used doctors in their ads. American Tobacco was the maker of Lucky Strike cigarettes. In 1930, the company created an ad that said, “20,679 Physicians say ‘LUCKIES are less irritating'” to the throat of a smoker. To arrive at this conclusion, American Tobacco's advertising agency sent cartons of Lucky Strike cigarettes to doctors along with a letter. That letter asked those doctors whether they believed Lucky Strike cigarettes were “less irritating to sensitive and tender throats than other cigarettes.” To make sure they got the results they wanted, the letter that “a good many people” had already said Lucky Strikes were less irritating. In the end, millions of Americans came to believe that cigarettes have a medicinal effect. By 1937, the Philip Morris weighed in with an ad in the Saturday Evening Post. Keep in mind, that magazine was extremely dominant and powerful in influencing public opinion throughout the United States at the time. The Philip Morris ad said the company did a study that showed “when smokers changed to Philip Morris, every case of irritation cleared completely and definitely improved.” The ad never mentioned the business relationship the company had with those doctors. For years, tobacco companies made claims in their advertising and marketing that smoking cigarettes are healthy, and if not good for you, the ads certainly never hinted that cigarettes could be bad for you. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company even created a Medical Relations Division and promoted it through medical journals. That company paid for its own research to demonstrate the medicinal benefits of cigarette smoking. In 1946, R.J. Reynolds created a new ad campaign under the slogan, “More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette.” We talk to someone who knows a lot more than I do on this. Robert Page is the lead author on a new scientific paper called: “Medical Marijuana, Recreational Cannabis, and Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association.”

Withdrawal management is an important component of an alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment system. With General Practitioners having good rapport with their patients and being integrated into their community, they play a vital role in discussing and managing withdrawal treatment options for those who present with lived experience of alcohol and other drugs. This podcast aims to inform clinicians on how to identify, support and refer patients who may need withdrawal management from alcohol and other drugs. It also touches on how to talk to patients about withdrawal management and engaging them in options outside of withdrawal treatment. It is an evidence based insightful discussion between a GP staff specialist, Dr Robert Page, and the Chief Addiction Medicine Specialist at the Centre for Alcohol and other Drugs, Dr Deborah Zador. Did you hear the one about the Welshman, the Englishman and the Scotsman walking onto a Podcast? In the first of our preview specials for this summers delayed Euro 2020 Finals, John spoke to men from media outlets of the three home nations in the tournament to assess their chances of progression. First up was Ian Mitchellmore of Wales Online. Ian purrs over his nation's incredible run to the Euro 2016 Semi Finals five years ago, including that memorable Quarter Final win over Belgium largely thanks to a sublime goal from Hal Robson-Kanu. He then talks through the job that Ryan Giggs and Robert Page have done to get the team to this summer's finals and their chances in a tough group containing Italy, Switzerland and Turkey. The recording was done prior to the announcement that Giggs won't be at the Euro's due to his recent assault charges. Ian is also hoping to be going to the Finals as part of his role so fingers crossed all works out for him. Next up, we had Sky Sports commentator Gary Taphouse to get an English perspective. Gary was more than happy to reminisce on Euro '96 and how close England got to winning a first international tournament in, at that point, 30 years. He then assesses the squad and where Gareth Southgate's side can be dangerous with the attacking midfield options in particular. The banter is good when we discuss Group D, where England and Scotland meet in the second game, and cover the fact that most England supporters don't mind seeing us Scots do well even if the feeling is not reciprocated by ourselves. Although he thinks England can do well, there was no "England Expects" noises from this English commentator. Last, but not least, award winning Scottish Daily Mail writer Stephen McGowan gives his thoughts on the Scots chances of progression. We too recall that night that Scotland finally ended 23 years of pain by beating Serbia on penalties. Whilst most of us were in our living rooms, Stephen was one of a lucky five journalists who had seats in Belgrade to cover that memorable night. The conversation goes onto reflecting on our last finals appearance at France '98, and why it's taken 23 years to qualify again before we discuss the chances of making more history by reaching the knockout phase for the first time. Like most, Stephen is just happy that we're at a major finals again. We hope you enjoy our unique angle in our first Euro 2020 preview. Big thank you to Ian Crocker for the introduction and to Scott McGill for the outro track.
