Tucson Comic Con 2024 Panel Narrative Role-Playing Games - A New Genre? Panelists: Becca Aazlor, Clayton Aazlor, Kirsten Aazlor Recorded live at Tucson Comic Con Saturday August 31, 2024 :: 11:20 am to 12:10 pm There has always been a massive divide between the kind of role one takes on in a video game or table top roleplaying game (TTRPG), and the kind of role one takes on when imagining and playing make-believe with friends as children. While D&D and many other systems try and bridge this divide, the problem is simply that the perspective of TTRPGs has always been mechanic first and narrative second. We don't have to play this way. Come and check out Transcendence. The first of its kind, this narrative RPG system has developed a set of mechanics to support your imagination. It's an entirely new system and approach that will change more than just how you game with friends. Be warned though - this game isn't made for everyone. Transcendence, and this panel, is for those who constantly feel stifled and wish for something truly new. If you find yourself intrigued come and get a free e-copy of the Transcendence Core Rulebook! When author John Raposa was last on the show, it was in 2017 for his dystopian thriller “Children of Apis” series. Now, he has a new book out, “All In The Cards” and while the book is indeed a thriller, this has a much darker tone. Here's a look at the synopsis: Danny and Leigh are your typical teenagers until a mystical deck of cards comes into their possession. What started as an innocent visit to a gypsy's tent results in a decision that alters the path of their lives. For Danny, the cards are both intriguing and addictive. To Leigh, they have a dark quality that should have been left alone. As the lives of Danny and Leigh unfold, the cards' sinister nature begins to emerge, and their dark powers have a chilling reach. As the cards' predictions are revealed, Danny and Leigh are forced to question everything they thought they knew. Are the cards really predicting their future, or is it all mere coincidence? And what is the true purpose of this sinister deck? In this episode, John, Curtis and Max talk about where the idea for the book came from, and his use of a regular deck of playing cards for this dark presence. John goes into the new experiences he had in the writing process for a psychological thriller and how he developed his main characters.

This week I am talking with Julie Gerstenblatt, whose debut novel, “Daughters of Nantucket,” came out last year and was included in several most anticipated lists for 2023. Prior to writing novels, Julie was a middle school English teacher and earned her PhD so that she could teach at the college level, but she ended up leaving teaching because she wanted to be a novelist. (Her story of how she admitted this desire to herself–and her advisors–during her PhD dissertation is incredible!) We covered: The many contemporary novel manuscripts she wrote but could not sell How combining something new (historical fiction) with something she knew well and loved (Nantucket) led to selling her book to a publisher How she kept writing “Daughters of Nantucket” even after her agent broke up with her Making time to write amidst teaching middle school, writing a PhD dissertation, and having three young kids The specifics of her morning routine and how she gets warmed up to write How she gets herself to leave the house For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com. ILM Immersive & Marvel Studios is releasing What If...?: An Immersive Story exclusively on Apple Vision Pro tomorrow, and I had a chance to take an early look and speak with producer and executive producer Shereif Fattouh as well as technical art director Indira Guerrieri about the process of creating this experience. It's mostly an immersive story with light interactions, but you can't actually die and so it's more about immersing yourself into these worlds with first-person embodiment and exploring around 10 different gesture-based interactions in nearly 50 different interactive moments across the 40 to 45-minute experience. There's also some disembodied moments where you're watching 3D movie cinematics on shards of glass floating in the environment, and so they're also really leaning into how good 3D movies look on the Apple Vision Pro within this experience. Overall, it's blending lots of elements together that feels like something new and a new genre of immersive storytelling that's building upon existing IP, and giving new opportunities to engage with these character's stories as well as their worlds. This is also the first Unreal Engine experience releasing on the Apple Vision Pro store, and so Fattouh told me that ILM Immersive has been making private modifications to get things working. There are features like mixed reality passthrough that are not available yet in Unreal Engine 5.4 yet. Agile Lens' Alex Coulombe told me, "The Epic Games XR team is small so I would I err on the side of assuming no major Vision Pro updates coming soon from Epic. To have the current features working it still requires a source build of Unreal Engine 5.4 (the Epic Games Launcher doesn't work) and current features include fully immersive mode, hand tracking / gesture recognition, forward and deferred rendering." So hopefully we'll get more on this soon from Epic Games, but at least we know it's possible and we'll start to see more Unreal Engine experiences on the Apple Vision Pro soon. Be sure to check out the transcript below for more information, and also don't miss my episode featuring my talk on an Elemental Theory of Presence, Experiential Design, and Immersive Storytelling, as well as my previous 480+ episodes on the topic of immersive storytelling over the past decade including previous coverage on Cycles, Myth: A Frozen Tale, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, and a conversation with John Gaeta about ILMxLab's The Holo-Cinema from Sundance New Frontier 2016. This week I'm going to talk about Matthew Perry and a couple of things that have come to light following his sad and untimely death. Soap operas were a pretty crowded market back in 1994 when Matthew Perry and friends first hit American TV screens. Friends brought together comedy and a soap opera and the concept of bringing together two things which are quite different to form something better than the two is known as integrative thinking. Another thing that has come to light from Matthew Perry's life is that although he was wealthy and successful, he based his whole idea of what was good on one simple thing, “do I get the laugh?” And when he didn't get a laugh from the audience Matthew took this personally. Comedy is a tough business and there are other ways to evaluate what was happening, this leads us to think about ways in which other comedians evaluated and moved on. Ken Dodd was one of the most analytical comedians in the UK, testing and refining different jokes on different audiences. And we can learn a lot about how analytics can move us from a pass/fail test to something more useful and enlightening – in Ken's case a Giggle Map – an analytical tool to help Ken to place the right joke in the right place. According to Ken, northern audiences needed a lot of “one liners” whereas in the south of the UK some more subtle jokes were called for.
Simon Grennan's book A Theory of Narrative Drawing (Palgrave MacMillan, 2017) offers an original new conception of visual storytelling, proposing that drawing, depictive drawing and narrative drawing are produced in an encompassing dialogic system of embodied social behavior. It refigures the existing descriptions of visual story-telling that pause with theorizations of perception and the articulation of form. The book identifies and examines key issues in the field, including: the relationships between vision, visualization and imagination; the theoretical remediation of linguistic and narratological concepts; the systematization of discourse; the production of the subject; idea and institution; and the significance of resources of the body in depiction, representation and narrative. It then tests this new conception in practice with two original visual demonstrations to clarify the particular dialectic relationships between subjects and media, in an examination of drawing style and genre, social consensus and self-conscious constraint. The book's originality derives from its clear articulation of a wide range of sources in proposing a conception of narrative drawing, and the extrapolation of this new conception in these two visual demonstrations. In this Interview Dr. Grennan discusses different strategies for reading this book, explains the graphiotactic array, and talks about how one can draw in drag. Dr. Simon Grennan is a Professor of Art and Design, at the University of Chester and has been practicing internationally as an artist since 1990. As part the collaborative team Grennan & Sperandio (Kartoonkings.com), he is well known as a pioneer of interventionist, New Genre and post-relational practice, through publishing, television and social action projects. Dr. Grennan is also an educator and an awarded scholar of narrative drawing, with particular expertise in the histories of drawing, comics, remediation and inter-media. He is a recognised theorist of the pedagogic relationship between practice and research and is an experienced, public facing practitioner. The public discourse about undocumented immigrants often lacks humanity and complexity according to writers Reyna Grande and Rafael Agustin, who have written acclaimed memoirs about their immigrant experiences. They and many others bring nuanced narratives to the burgeoning genre of undocumented literature. Grande co-edited “Somewhere We Are Human,” an anthology released last year that features work by 41 undocumented or formerly undocumented writers, poets and artists. The editors' note states, “Opportunities and infrastructure for immigrants to tell their own stories in their own words are few and far between.” In this hour of Forum, we'll hear some of those stories and discuss the undocumented experience in America. Guests: Reyna Grande, author, "A Ballad of Love and Glory," "The Distance Between Us," "A Dream Called Home," "Across a Hundred Mountains," and "Dancing with Butterflies" Aline Mello, poet and author of the poetry collection, "More Salt Than Diamond," and essay "Fit," which appears in the anthology, "Somewhere We Are Human." Kaveh Bassiri, Iranian poet, translator who is currently a Tusla Artist Fellow in Oklahoma; his poems appeared in the anthology, "Somewhere We Are Human." Rafael Agustin, television writer; CEO, the Latino Film Institute; author, "Illegally Yours"

We got another great suggested topic, this time from Myles! The evolution of genre in gaming. He uses the example of SRPGs and how they have grown due to incorporating new genre elements - like dating sims in their case - to freshen things up. I'd hazard a guess that literally every series shifts genres here and there, but those shifts can be interesting reactions, or miscalculations about cultural trends or audience desires. Shine on!
