Nadine Pequeneza & Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Last of The Right Whales, conservation and general ocean health, hope, despair, joy and plankton, plant intelligence, cohabitation, community and grass roots movements.Watch it on CBC and find out more information here about the film.Blurb:These gentle giants no longer die of natural causes. Instead, they are run over by ships or suffer lethal injuries from fishing gear. Over the past decade they've been dying at a rate of 24 per year. This staggering death toll is fueling a movement to save the first great whale to face extinction. Last of the Right Whales is the story of a disparate group of people - a wildlife photographer, a marine biologist, a whale rescuer, and a crab fisher - united in their cause to save the North Atlantic right whale. By joining forces these formidable allies are determined to stop the world's first great whale extinction. The film combines the 4K cinematography of a blue-chip nature film with the character-driven, vérité storytelling of a high-stakes drama. With unprecedented access to film the migration of the North Atlantic right whale from their calving ground off the coast of Florida to their new feeding area in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this feature documentary brings a message of hope about the most at-risk, great whale on the planet.About Nadine:Nadine Pequeneza is an award-winning Producer/Director specializing in character-driven films that offer unique access to stories about a wide range of topics from criminal justice to global finance, to wildlife conservation. With more than 15 years international experience her work has garnered worldwide recognition, including a Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing in a Documentary Program, nine CSA and Gemini nominations, Gold and Silver Hugos from the Chicago International Film Festival and a Silver Gavel Award honourable mention from the American Bar Association. TRU Beauty Confessions is a part of the EcoParent Podcast Network: https://www.ecoparent.ca/podcasts About the Episode:In launching this dig into the beauty narrative, we felt it would be necessary as a starting place to get clarity of who we may be speaking to in our wider community. We sat with women from varying backgrounds, ages and lifestyles. We will be unpacking the truths involving our relationship with beauty and the way this impacts how we treat ourselves and others, the way we see ourselves, and feel in our bodies. We realized there can be no Green Beauty movement without understanding that true beauty is much more than skin deep. This is not a cliché but an intellectual understanding that beauty is a vibration or a frequency, it is something that we are able to ‘feel.' This feeling of ‘beautiful' is what unlocks our individual magic and prowess in our everyday lives. We will explore the four pillars of beauty, encompassing our physical, mental, emotional, and energetic selves. Our physical beauty pillar includes the ways by which we support our bodies with exercise, food, water and products, along with our physical appearance. Our mental beauty pillar includes the knowledge we have about our bodies and why they appear as they do at various stages in life and/or circumstances. Our emotional beauty pillar explores the way we feel about ourselves based on psychological, cognitive, societal, and/or hormonal influences. The energetic beauty pillar focuses on our vibration or frequency that we are emitting through reflection, self-love, self-care, spiritual practice, meditation, or anything that brings us into a closer relationship with our energetic body. When these beauty pillars are not in balance, then how we feel about ourselves has little to do with how we look. Although we can be bombarded with images of what is beautiful, the conditioned shame and guilt that accompanies this fed narrative only works to confuse and silence us on this topic, keeping a divide between who we are told to be and who we really are. Guests: Celeste Morrisseau is a 21-year indigenous young woman living downtown Toronto working as a telecommunications agent trying to figure out how to move through what can be a complex and difficult dating scene. She is honest about anxiety, depression and how she is coming to terms with beauty standards as a more full figure in today's world and whether men really accept the ‘thick' girl, while what it means to see beauty in another.Kate is 45, a mother of three, and attempting to embrace many new life changes including a change of career and lifestyle, along with a heightened awareness of what it means to acknowledge and love the evolving female body. Kate has recently retired from the position of a Special Education Teacher and is embarking on an environmental green dream of manufacturing unique and super classy tiny homes with her partner Andrew Miller.https://ninemilenorth.com/About Your Host Michelle Rosetta, Clinical Herbalist and Owner of BEE23 Natural Beauty:Michelle is a mother of four with over 20 years of experience in the health and beauty industry, inspired by her own sensitivities to synthetic ingredients in personal care products and a deep need to be good to the environment we share this world with. TRU Beauty Confessions is a part of the EcoParent Podcast Network: https://www.ecoparent.ca/podcastsAbout the Episode: We discuss how water is our number one beauty must-have.We explore how as individuals we are our own experts when we learn to listen to our living, breathing environment. Our bodies will tell us what we are lacking and what we need, if only we give it the space to speak to us. Emily discusses her journey from dis-ease to health with water and how changing her relationship with water impacted her whole body including the aesthetic of her physical self and skin. She delves into how she began to feel that the water she was consuming was a living force and was learning how to care for herself through simple mindful consumption of this resource. She confesses she hid for years behind a mask of makeup, and how it finally felt to show her face to her husband who in all the years of marriage had never seen her without makeup on.We touch on the topic of water on its own as the fundamental fountain of youth, and how imperative it is to care and protect this environmental resource. Our health is inextricably tied up in the health of our water that has circulated around this planet since time immemorial, holding important information to nourish all of our cells from inside out and outside in.About your Guest:Emily Cowley is a massage therapist, homeschooling mama and water educator. Raising Greener Teens is a part of the EcoParent Podcast Network: https://www.ecoparent.ca/podcastsAbout the Episode:What is acne and how can you treat it while also improving your overall health? In this episode Caralyn Hale helps explain where a teenager (or anyone) struggling with acne can get started to help heal and stop breakouts. She explains what a healthy skin routine looks like, how to find the right products and insure you aren't destroying your skin barrier. She goes on to also look at what is happening internally when acne is an issue, how to tell if your acne is hormonal, and what to do if it is. She covers realistic diet strategies to help maintain a healthy relationship to food but also understand how to increase nutrient dense foods and to decrease known acne triggers. She also talks about how she helps women dealing with post-pill acne and why the pill doesn't fix—and can even cause—acne. “Things will get better!” she says to teens struggling with acne. “Acne has been my greatest teacher. It has encouraged me to find the best version of myself.” If your teenager wants more, but doesn't want to listen to this whole episode, then my teenager simplifies the episode in her “Teen Splain”. Raising Greener Teens is a part of the EcoParent Podcast Network: https://www.ecoparent.ca/podcastsAbout the Episode:Social Media is changing the teenage brain and interfering with the work a teenager must do to prepare for their future selves, but teens are also more dependent on social media than ever. What can a parent (and teen) do? In this episode Hayley Newell explains how the teenage years are the time for individuation where teens go from relying on an outside authority to an internal authority. To do this, dopamine forces them to feel more at this time to light the emotional spark and help them overcome the fear and reservation needed for them to “launch”. Social media interferes with this dopamine response and encourages passivity, it puts your teenager (and you) into situations ruled by mob mentality, and their social interactions are being controlled by an outside influence that makes money from grabbing their attention. Hayley guides us in thinking about how to question and survive social media, cancel culture, and our own relationship with our phones. Then my teenager simplifies it all in her “Teen Splain”. Guest Bio & Links:Hayley Newell is a registered therapeutic counselor and regular educator and podcast guest on issues related to the brain and nervous system. “Go to the source. Ask teenagers about their experiences. What are the challenges and the needs?” she says.
