We begin season 3, the only way we possibly could, politically. Most listeners will be aware that Australia is currently in the midst of an federal election. Here at binge thinking, we wanted to speak with youth representatives of each the parties to find out what they think the issues are, and why they feel they are best placed to look after your interests. Fundamentally, we wanted to know what makes a young person see the a bright future with a particular political party? So we approached the offices of the Young Liberals, Young Labor and Victorian Young Greens, along with some of their millennial candidates. And while the Liberal and Labor parties did not respond to our requests for an interview, one millennial Greens candidate did. Adam Pulford is a 29 year old social activist running as the Greens candidate for the electorate of Wills, which stretches from Melbourne's Inner north of Brunswick through to Coburg, Pascoe Vale, Fawkner and Glenroy. The seat is currently held by Labor's Peter Khalil by 4.9% and is considered in play for the Greens who won 31% of the primary vote in the last election. So how did Adam, a 29 year old (originally from the Northern Territory) who grew up socially conservative and first voted Liberal in 2007, end up becoming a Greens political candidate with an actual chance of winning? Adam and Caspar sat down to discuss this, along with his life working as a social activist, his work with Greens MP Adam Bandt, his views on leadership, how he came to terms with his homosexuality, and going public about his mental health. As always, this episode was produced and edited by the incredibly talented and hard working Nina Roxburgh and features music by Big Gigantic.

A refugee soccer player who was detained in Thailand for three months under threat of extradition to Bahrain shook hands Thursday with Australia's prime minister, whom he credits with securing his freedom.Three days after he was released from a cramped Bangkok cell, Hakeem al-Araibi was welcomed into Prime Minister Scott Morrison's ornate office in Parliament House.Morrison and Foreign Minister Marise Payne had repeatedly lobbied the Thai and Bahrain governments on al-Araibi's behalf for his return to Australia where he is a permanent resident."Thank you very much. I'm so happy to be back in Australia now and I'm grateful to be here to live in this country," the 25-year-old said.Morrison said he was pleased al-Araibi had come home and looked forward to him soon becoming an Australian citizen.Al-Araibi had arrived in his home city of Melbourne on Tuesday on a flight from Bangkok where he had been detained since November following an extradition application from his native Bahrain. He came to Parliament House on Thursday morning to watch a soccer match played by lawmakers, supporters and stars of the Australian national women's team wearing the yellow uniform of Amnesty International and the blue of al-Arabi's Melbourne team Pascoe Vale Football Club. The former Bahrain national team player watched from the sidelines with the foreign minister, explaining that his hamstrings remained too tight after weeks in a crowded cell to play. The soccer match had been planned as a demonstration of support for al-Araibi when he faced indefinite detention. But instead, it became a celebration of his release.Former Australia national team captain Craig Foster had been a leader in the campaign for al-Araibi's release and played for Pascoe Vale on Thursday."We're all very worried about him," Foster said. "He's obviously riding on incredible adrenalin and elation. ""I would image ... in the next week or two or three, he's going to need some help. He's been through an incredible ordeal and I think that's exacerbated by the fact that he was a torture survivor previously," Foster added.Al-Araibi has said he was blindfolded and had his legs beaten while he was held in Bahrain previously. He said he believed he was targeted for arrest because of his Shiite faith and because his brother was politically active in Bahrain. Bahrain has a Shiite majority but is ruled by a Sunni monarchy.Bahrain wanted him to serve a 10-year prison sentence in an arson attack that damaged a police station. He has denied those charges and says the case is politically motivated.Al-Araibi was detained by mistake upon arrival in Bangkok on his honeymoon. Interpol rules do not allow refugees to be deported to the countries from where they fled persecution. He was released when Thai authorities shared a letter indicating that Bahrain had withdrawn its request for al-Araibi.Officials in Bahrain said the country "reaffirms its right to pursue all necessary legal actions against" al-Araibi.Al-Araibi says he fled Bahrain because of political repression and that he fears torture if he returns.

In Victoria, Pascoe Vale have dented and possibly ended Dandenong Thunder’s chances of making the finals with a 3-1 win at home. Also in Victoria, and Melbourne Knights have taken a valuable three points in a 3-2 win over Port Melbourne Sharks to go equal 6th on the table. Port Melbourne would have secured a finals spot with a win, but instead they find themselves dragged back into a tight battle for 5th and 6th place. And with arguably the toughest final two rounds, Port Melbourne could look back at this loss as a very costly one. On to Tasmania now, where Hobart Zebras have defeated Kingborough Lions 3-1 to keep pressure on the league leaders. Not a lot of Australian football news today, so instead I’m going to give you a quick update on the TPO Rankings and some of the major movement over the last week. And I’ll start with the big one - Heidelberg are no longer the highest ranked non-A-League club after their 2-0 defeat to Pascoe Vale. They’ve fallen to 10th in the country and been overtaken by APIA Leichhardt Tigers who beat the Sydney FC Youth team 5-1 over the weekend. Pascoe Vales win sees them move up 3 spots to 24th. Dropping out of the Top 25 is Broadmeadow Magic to 26th, despite having a 3-0 over Weston Workers. Avondale have fallen further after a second loss in two weeks. But this was a surprise - losing 5-1 to bottom of the table Bulleen Lions! Avondale fell four spots this week to 21st. The highest ranked Tier 3 side right now is Peninsula Power from QLD in 36th. The highest Tier 4 side is Geelong from the Victorian SL1NW at 84th. Highest Tier 5 is Berwick City from Victorian SL2SE in 180th.
