Arp 13, 2025 Sermon By Thomas Hamilton Kingdom Logic: Pray like Jesus and not like Peter Matthew 26:30-56
What is the boat God is telling you to come out of? and will you Go?
Jesus never takes His eyes off us. Preached February 5, 2025 Pastor Aaron Frasier
So your famed indie-rock band, a staple of the 2000s, is breaking up. Your influence is such that your own son plays your most famous song just to piss you off. What's your response? Well for Peter Matthew Bauer it was to hunker down in hotel rooms across Europe, demo like crazy, awash himself in his own mystic upbringing and craft Liberation! Though it might feel like a cheeky poke at The Walkmen to title your first solo record as such, Bauer looks for a deeper, more welcoming freedom. And that rings out across the sheer warmth of Liberation! He visits places of worship and finds kindness and dirty jokes in equal amounts, each new spire, chapel or slice of nature as friendly as the last. It's an album about spirituality, quitters and the nexus between. So listen to our interview with Bauer, read our thoughts on Liberation! and see why it's the best of the 10s. “I wanted to make music that, if you liked it, it meant you were putting up with me.” — Peter Matthew Bauer

You have a far brighter future than you may imagine. You can see great changes in your life. You can overcome your past failures and mistakes. You can become a great success and a powerful leader. This is what can happen when you experience Jesus Christ in a personal way and become trained as one of His true followers. Jesus ministered to great multitudes of people and saw many healings and miracles. But He spent most of his time forming the character and developing the capacities of a diverse group of personalities. The training of His team of 12 ordinary men was central to His mission and essential to the continuation of His ministry. Although one betrayed him and was replaced, it was this team of 12 who stood together on the Day of Pentecost when the Christian community began its rapid expansion in the first century. And it was a former fisherman called Peter who was the spokesman and leader of the group. Peter was brought to Jesus by his brother Andrew (Matthew 4:18-20). Soon he was not only part of an inner core group of the 12, but was also regarded as the leader of the group. In each list of the disciples in the gospels and in Acts 1:13, Peter is always mentioned first. We know more of Peter than any other disciple in the different gospel accounts. And it is from these accounts that we get a very clear example of how Jesus trained His disciples. We need to understand this because Jesus called His first disciples, as He calls us as Christians today, to ‘go and make disciples in all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you' (Matthew 28:19-20). Now we need to understand Christians are born or born again by the Spirit of God working in our lives, but disciples are formed. Jesus made this clear when He called Peter and Andrew to leave their fishing nets and follow Him. Matthew 4:19 records that Jesus said, “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of people.” Being made into fishers of people meant developing them through an intentional process to become what God intended them to become. Training is essential in any walk of life, and it is just the same if you are serious about growing in your Christian life and leadership. That's why the apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11: ‘follow me as I follow Christ.' And that's why he was able to form people like Timothy and Titus into great leaders. To help us excel as disciples and disciple makers we should be wise to learn from how Jesus trained his team of 12 and more specifically by focussing on how Jesus formed Peter into a great disciple and leader. 1. Jesus was prepared to shape someone who needed a lot of shaping (Matthew 17:3-5; Luke 5:5; Matthew 16:21-22) 2. Jesus gave Peter a strong vision for his life (Luke 6:14; Matthew 16:18) 3. Jesus constantly challenged and confronted Peter (Matthew 16:23; Hebrews 12:11) 4. Jesus prayed for Peter (John 17:6-19; Luke 22:31-32) 5. Jesus restored Peter (John 21) Apply 1. Jesus was prepared to shape someone who needed a lot of shaping: Why did Jesus spend so much time and effort with Peter? One reason was because Peter needed a lot of help. Peter was a strong character, a very rough diamond. His character flaws were many and often clear for all to see. - He was impulsive: He was quick to jump out of the boat on the stormy sea of Galilee and try to walk on water like Jesus. - He often spoke without thinking: On the mount of transfiguration when the great figures of Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus, he just thought he would weigh in with some helpful comments, so Father God had to tell him to stop speaking (Matthew 17:3-5). - He was blunt and direct: When Jesus told the disciples to throw their nets on the other side of the boat, Peter wanted to make it clear to Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth, they were only doing it because he was asking them to (Luke 5:5). In other words he felt free to verbalise his scepticism and reluctance. - He was arrogant and rude: He saw himself as superior to the other disciples declaring that if everyone left Jesus for sure he would remain. He felt at liberty to opening disagree with Jesus and even giving him a telling off (Matthew 16:21-22). Here was a man who didn't know how to respect boundaries. - He was aggressive: In the garden of Gethsemane where Judas had arrived with a group of soldiers and officials to arrest Jesus, Peter was quick to pull out his sword and took a swing at the head of Malchus, the servant of the high priest. He missed decapitating him but managed to cut off his ear, which Jesus quickly healed. - He failed totally at the moment when he should have stepped up: Despite his big boasts, Peter's weakness and fear overcame him when Jesus was arrested. He used some very bad language as he denied the Lord three times and then wept bitterly over his failure. Peter was in his time of formation, a very rough, outspoken and erratic character, not your ideal candidate for Christian leadership, you may think. He had many good points, but his failures seemed to outnumber them. How many of these traits can you identify with? Your failures and mistakes need not disqualify you from being raised up to serve the Lord. Just as Jesus determined to form this far from perfect man into a great leader, so He wants you to be formed into His likeness. And he wants every disciple maker to accept the challenge of shaping up disciples who may need a lot of shaping. 2. Jesus gave Peter a strong vision for his life: From the beginning, Jesus spoke strong words of affirmation over Peter. He wanted him to visualize his future, not focus on his past. He wanted him to know that he was being trained up to have a far more fulfilling and fruitful life than just catching fish. He would bring many men and women into the kingdom of God. And Jesus wanted him to have a very strong and positive perception of his own identity in the kingdom of God. His name was Simon but Jesus also named him Peter (Luke 6:14). It was like a nickname. Coming from the Greek word petros (or the Aramaic word “Cephas”), the name Peter means “Rock” or “Stone.” Although Peter at times seemed to be all over the place in his emotions, actions and reactions, he knew that the Lord had marked him out as a rock who could be depended on (Matthew 16:18). He would become a bedrock of the church and an unshakeable, immovable leader. In time He became what Jesus had declared his identity to be. Whether you are forming someone in your family or the church family, always speak possibilities over your disciples. Always cast vision for what they can be. Always declare God has great dreams for them and encourage them to discover them. 3. Jesus constantly challenged and confronted Peter: No other disciple was as corrected as much as Peter and it was often done in the context of the group. Peter so often said the wrong thing at the wrong time, notably when he tried out of sentiment and personal affection to stop Jesus going to the cross. This earned a fierce rebuke from Jesus, as it conflicted with the whole reason Jesus had come into the world (Matthew 16:23). Now it is not recommended to use such language in forming disciples but for anyone to be trained, the trainer or parent must be caring and courageous enough to correct and the trainee/ apprentice/disciple must be prepared to accept correction with a humble attitude. By definition, to be a disciple means to be a learner. So be willing to accept correction and move forward (Hebrews 12:11). 4. Jesus prayed for Peter: Of course, Jesus prayed for all his disciples (John 17:6-19). He prayed for their protection and their unity that they would be filled with joy and kept holy through the truth of God's word. But Jesus also prayed specifically for Peter, who He knew would be targeted by Satan and tempted to give up (Luke 22:31-32). How we need to pray for everyone we are trying to help and form for Christ, especially our family members and disciples. And such prayers will be answered as it was in the case of Peter. 5. Jesus restored Peter: Jesus never gave up on Peter. Even after his failures, when Peter had gone back fishing after his denials and all the dark events of the crucifixion, Jesus came looking for him. John 21 tells how he invited him to a memorable talk over breakfast by the Lake of Galilee. He asked Peter three times if he loved Him, giving him the opportunity to cancel out his three denials, and then Jesus recommissioned him three times instructing him ‘to feed my sheep.' And then, not long after Jesus returned to heaven and left them to carry on his work. Soon everyone saw that the investment of Jesus in Peter was far from wasted. Weeks later on the Day of Pentecost, Peter, with the 11 other disciples standing side by side in strong support, preached a powerful message of repentance and restoration. Three thousand people were added to the church that very day. Peter then led the way in working miracles just as Jesus had. He slept peacefully in prison the night before he was due to be executed just as he had seen Jesus sleep in the storm. He opened up the good news of the gospel to the Gentiles when he went to the home of the roman centurion Cornelius. Above all Peter was a changed man. John MacArthur in his book ‘Twelve Ordinary Men' highlights how Peter had learned to be submissive, humble and teachable. He became self-controlled and full of love, as his later letters made clear. And he lost his fear, courageously preaching the gospel and finally, according to the records of early church history, asking to be crucified upside down as he wasn't worthy to die as his Lord had died. If you are an unreconstructed Peter, so conscious of your faults and failings, there is hope for you. And if you are a disciple maker, don't ever give up with people, even if they are very difficult customers. For your investment in them may well prove to be the most fulfilling and far-reaching thing you have ever done.

When St. Peter answered Jesus' question, little did he know that it would be a hinge-moment in his life. Matthew week 13 Matthew 4:18-22 ESV 18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. John 1:40-42 ESV 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas”(which means Peter) Matthew 4:19 ESV “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Mark 8:34-35 ESV 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. Matthew 11:29-30 ESV 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Hebrews 13:20-21 ESV 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. Luke 6:40 ESV 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. Hebrews 5:12-14 ESV 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Ephesians 4:11-16 ESV 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Colossians 1:28-29 ESV 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

The Rock! - The Apostle Peter - Matthew 16:13–19
We are so happy Peter Matthew Bauer fell into our lap. The former founding bassist and organist for the iconic indie rock band, The Walkmen, who also moonlights as a producer and manager of other cool bands, just released his third solo LP, Flowers. We talk about this fantastic album over a stem cell hanger steak, also discussing LA, his dog Maggie, and a bunch of silly shit.
Unfair Grace – by Pastor Kobus Massyn To understand unfair grace you need to understand the Kingdom of God. There is no democracy in a kingdom and if the king decrees something, it is final. How amazing is it to be in the Kingdom of God, where all creation worships Him. And when He says that He loves you, that is an order of the King. God told Peter: Matthew 16:19 AMP - “I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.” The purpose of keys is to enable / authorise and give ownership. To give you the right to enter. There are three times Peter used the keys: Acts 2 - Salvation to the Jews Acts 8 - Salvation to the Samaritans Acts 10 - Salvation to the Gentiles Receiving the keys to the Kingdom is like receiving the keys to a new house or motorbike. As soon as the keys are handed over, the deal has been sealed and signed. You've got ownership and the responsibility now. Jesus never preached to the people about His crucifixion except to His disciples, but everywhere He went, He explained and described the Kingdom. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in the Kingdom? John 14:2 - My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? In the Kingdom, there is room for us all. But what does it mean to have this unfair grace? Let us have a look at understanding and not understanding grace. Jesus vs Jonah There are a few similarities between Jesus and Jonah God send both Jesus and Jonah to deliver a message. (Read the book of Jonah). Jonah was told to go to Nineveh to tell them that it is over and that God has had enough. Jonah did not want to and tried to flee the presence of God. Both Jonah and Jesus died. Jonah 2:1 & 6b - 1Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, 2 and said, “I called out of my trouble and distress to the Lord, And He answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol I cried for help, And You heard my voice. - 6Yet You have brought up my life from the pit (death), O Lord my God. Jonah did not love the Ninivites, but eventually did what God wanted him to do and delivered the message to the people. The people repents to God, but Jonah was upset that God forgave them. He had the knowledge of God's power but he did not have the understanding of grace. Jesus was different. Luke 4:16-30 - 'So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy), to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favour of God abound greatly].” Then He rolled up the scroll [having stopped in the middle of the verse], gave it back to the attendant and sat down [to teach]; and the eyes of all those in the synagogue were [attentively] fixed on Him. He began speaking to them: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing and in your presence.” And [as He continued on] they all were speaking well of Him, and were in awe and were wondering about the words of grace which were coming from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph's son?” So He said to them, “You will no doubt quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal Yourself! Whatever [miracles] that we heard were done [by You] in Capernaum, do here in Your hometown as well.' ” Then He said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown. But in truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was closed up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; and yet Elijah was not sent [by the Lord] to a single one of them, but only to Zarephath in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and not one of them was cleansed [by being healed] except Naaman the Syrian.” As they heard these things [about God's grace to these two Gentiles], the people in the synagogue were filled with a great rage; and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the crest of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to hurl Him down the cliff. But passing [miraculously] through the crowd, He went on His way. ' Jesus loved the people even if they did not want to hear it or except grace. Jesus understood the gift of grace When Jesus spoke about the Kingdom, He spoke with reverence. There was no wondering of what was. The good news is that we do not deserve grace, but the King declared it. Grace is found in a Kingdom and given by a King. Matthew 20:1-16 - ' “For the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of an estate who went out in the morning at dawn to hire workmen for his vineyard. When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour (9:00 a.m.) and saw others standing idle in the market place; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right (an appropriate wage).' And they went. He went out about the sixth hour (noon) and the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.), and did the same thing. And about the eleventh hour (5:00 p.m.) he went out and found others standing around, and he said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?' They answered him, ‘Because no one hired us.' He told them, ‘You go into the vineyard also.' “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last [to be hired] and ending with the first [to be hired].' Those who had been hired at the eleventh hour (5:00 p.m.) came and received a denarius each [a day's wage]. Now when the first [to be hired] came, they thought they would get more; but each of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they protested and grumbled at the owner of the estate, saying, ‘These men who came last worked [only] one hour, and yet you have made them equal [in wages] to us who have carried [most of] the burden and [worked in] the scorching heat of the day.' But the owner of the estate replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no injustice. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go, but I choose to give to this last man [hired] the same as I give to you. Am I not lawfully permitted to do what I choose with what is mine? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?' So those who are last [in this world] shall be first [in the world to come], and those who are first, last.” ' The great commission is in our hands. Go out and make disciples and teach them. But are you going to do it like Jonah or Jesus? When Jesus steps in, everything changes. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. Because when you are in Christ and go through the doors, you are in the Kingdom of God. The moment we step into the Kingdom we will understand the dimension where the Holy Spirit operates and manifest. Step into the understanding of the Kingdom. If you are still trying to figure out what is fair, you are not understanding the Kingdom, for God says that His grace is enough. Seek first the Kingdom of God.
Peter Matthew Bauer - "Skulls" from the 2022 album Flowers on Fortune Tellers. With The Walkmen still on hiatus, multi-instrumentalist Peter Matthew Bauer continues their anthemic style of indie rock on his latest solo LP, Flowers. On today's Song of the Day, he displays the ways he's developed musically since the band took a break. "'Skulls' was inspired by a new style of guitar playing that I stumbled on," he told Under the Radar. "In all the years I'd made music, I'd never figured out a way to take a guitar solo before. I started using a distortion pedal and a space echo, playing these kind of waterfalling guitar riffs over some farfisa chords. It felt really loose and brought me a lot of joy. From there, I tried to write a very joyous melody to match it. There's a record by Peter One and Jess Sah Bi, it's a kind of 1980s country rock record from the Cote d'Ivoire. I feel like their style of melodies really inspired me throughout this album. Just the rhythm and the way they're both laid back but really letting go." We as people are enamored with ideas. We hear a sales pitch or see how a product will solve all our problems, how it will usher in a new era of convenience. We become entranced like a dog who only sees the bone. Then we see the price tag or what we will have to go through to get it and abruptly, we snap out of the spell only to realize that we love the idea but not enough to invest in it (Peter - Matthew 14:22-33). Today's Reading: Romans 11:33-36Daily Lectionary:Proverbs 16:1-24; John 16:1-16Who has known . . . Who has counseled . . . Who has given? (Romans 11:34-35)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Paul wonders who has known the mind of the Lord (Romans 11:34). The answer, because of sin, is none of us. "You have not in mind the things of God but the things of men," Jesus says to Peter (Matthew 16:23). Paul also wonders who has counseled God. In other words, who has actually been able to give God advice about how best to be God? The answer? We've certainly tried, but our counsel is so deeply immersed in our sin that even the best of our advice is found wanting. Who has given a gift to God that he might be repaid? My goodness, that last phrase hits hard. The only thing that could be given is our very lives, and thankfully, God does not require that of us. According to the Law, because of our sin the answer to all three questions is none of us, not one.But Paul writes so that we would see that Jesus' death and resurrection, His tabernacling with us, addresses at least two of the questions. Who has known the mind of God? You have. He's given you His mind, given you Jesus. "If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him" (John 14:7). We "see" Him by hearing (Romans 10:17). But who has given God something? This is where the psalmist helps: "What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord" (Psalm 116:12-13). Our giving, then, starts in and finds its everlasting source in receiving: receiving what Jesus graciously gives in the Divine Service and the Lord's Supper, so we may call upon Him, pray, and confess the words He's given us to say.As for counsel, well, that's where Paul leaves us hanging. None of us has counseled God, and there is great comfort in this. He needs no help from us, but instead sends the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, to lead us to and keep us in the Holy Christian Church, where daily forgiveness and life are given to you and me. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Triune God, be Thou our stay; O let us perish never! Cleanse us from our sins, we pray, And grant us life forever. Keep us from the evil one; Uphold our faith most holy, And let us trust Thee solely With humble hearts and lowly. Let us put God's armor on, With all true Christians running Our heav'nly race and shunning The devil's wiles and cunning. Amen, amen! This be done; So sing we, "Alleluia!" Have you ever had problems forgiving everyone but yourself? I know I have, and it is a struggle I deal with a lot. In this first episode of a multi-part series I will discuss forgiving yourself and how it can be overcome. Please enjoy the first part of this series! Show Notes: Luke 22:1-4, 47-53 (Judas' betrayal and he killed himself on Matthew 27:3-10) When I said that "Judas already planned to betray Jesus" I meant to say that "Satan had planned to enter Judas to use him to betray Jesus" Luke 22:54-62 (Peter's denial) Mark 9:30-32 (Jesus telling His disciples that He was coming back to life) John 21:15-17 (Peter's Restoration) When I said "Christ Himself said to Jesus..." I meant to say "Christ Himself said to Peter" Matthew 16: 18-19 New Living Translation (NLT) "Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” (This was the verse where Jesus told Peter about his destiny) 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 NLT “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.” Psalm 103:10-11 NLT “He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 New King James Version (NKJV) "And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." Romans 8:38-39 NKJV "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Matthew publishes blog content and case studies on his personal website and on his company website. The case study that we talked about is published here with much more information and all the tiny details. You can also find Matthew on Linkedin or Twitter. You can also watch the whole presentation on YouTube Here is the transcript of the podcast: Matthew: One of the biggest wins we had was with the homepage where we deploy I think around 10,000 words of content. Peter: This is the time for marketing. The marketing podcast that will tell you everything you've missed when you didn't attend the marketing conference. Peter: Hello welcome to the time for marketing podcast the podcast that gives you all of the information that you have missed when you didn't attend your marketing conferences. Welcome to episode number 25 my name is Peter and I'll be your host for today before we go to our guests. I'm not going to tell you to subscribe to the podcast I'm going to tell you and ask you something else tomorrow when you go to work. Yes, I know you work with a lot of marketing people when they leave their cell phones on the table take them open their podcast app and subscribe them to my podcast, that's probably the easiest way to tell people to subscribe to the podcast thank you. All right and now let's go to the guests that we have this time hello Matthew Woodward how are you doing? Matthew: [laughs] Hey, thanks for having me on. I love your little tip there a very blackhat approach so to speak I think I might steal that one for myself of next conference [laughs] Peter: Well, people don't randomly talk about podcast and mention podcasts to other people that doesn't happen. We have to give them specific advice this is always a marketing thing be very specific on what people should do click here, subscribe other people to my podcast. Nice to have you here on the podcast, Matthew. Matthew: Thank you very much. Peter: Matthew people know you. You have a very known blog that is matthewwoodworth.codit.uk and you are also the director of search logistics. Tell me what are the fun things that you do in your line of work? Matthew: Well, my line of work all of it is fun from top to bottom. I've been doing SEO since before link-building existed and I've been following my passion ever since. The fun things I get to do every day is just nerd out on what I love doing and that is SEO and digital business and everything like that. Honestly, it doesn't matter if I'm doing like some like boring data entry tasks or planning a new promotion [laughs] I love it all. Peter: All right. I invited you to this podcast because you were in Barcelona, how is Barcelona? Matthew: Yes Barcelona a beautiful city. I don't usually like cities, but Barcelona was pretty cool. The Affiliate Summit Conference is one of my favorite conferences because it attracts such a wide variety of people rather than just SEO or just the ECOMAS guys and so forth. It's a great conference and I put together a great presentation for them which I'm hoping to boil down and share with you guys today. Peter: I feel that affiliate marketing is, similar to SEO, it has been pronounced dead a couple of times in the past. Matthew: Yes.[laughs] Peter: It's still there and it still works very well right? Matthew: Yes, as long as there are things to buy there'll be affiliates and as long as there are search engines to search they'll be SEOs. [laughs] Peter: All right let's not beat around the bush that's what we do. Let's go directly to your presentation, your presentation was a case study on how to increase your search traffic for 14 times? Matthew: Yes, we took search traffic from 2,700 a month to 38,000 in just eight months with an affiliate site in the health niche. Peter: All right. I think we have to take our five minutes so that you can explain to us how you did that so that we can repeat that for our own websites here you go. Matthew: Look SEO doesn't have to be complicated. One of the things I know as popular SEO blog owner is that people always like looking for the secret ingredient or the supersecret to SEO. The truth of the matter is it just doesn't exist. There isn't a super-secret to find, there isn't a super ingredient, there isn't that one thing that's going to push you over the edge. It just doesn't work like that. It's a combination of factors that will help to elevate your search traffic. The problem is most people are only focused on one of those factors which is building links. It's very easy to get lost in the technicalities and complications of SEO, but look it boils down really to a very, very simple three-step process. That is, first of all, take a look at technical SEO. You've got to build the structure of a solid and healthy website structure that not only Google loves, but people love as well. The second step is you've got to create content that actually helps people. It's actually, got to be relevant people actually want to engage with it. It's got to be the content that when people read it they want to share it. No one wants to link to a lemon and many people don't produce good enough content that's worthy of attracting links naturally it's a common mistake. The third step is link building and that just acquiring links from relevant websites. That is 10 times easy to do when you've taken care of content creation and your technical SEO and on-site experience. Those three pillars the healthy site structure, the content and the link building those three pillars if you pay attention to them and work them together have absolutely incredible effects. You don't need SEO to be complicated just take care of the basics and Google will reward you. The problem is many people don't want to take care of the basics. Honestly, that's all we did in this case study we 14 times search traffic in a highly competitive health niche and we only built 76 links. Over that period the site actually attracted around 350 links. Now the reason it was able to attract 280 links was that because we paid attention to site structure and content before we went out to do the link building. now if you had to budget for those additional 250 links in the health niche you'd probably have had to spend around a hundred to 150 dollars per link. Not only from an ROI perspective is taking care of your technical SEO and quality of content important. It's important for your users, it's important for Google your rankings your traffic and conversion everything relies on getting those three pillars right, but so many people are blindly obsessed with link building they can't see the woods for the trees and then they use all of their effort and all of their resources building links which they're not getting the maximum value from those links because they haven't taken care of the other core pillars and when you take care of all of them they all work together and it's the most cost-effective way of increasing your search traffic. Now the case study site and I've got a very detailed case study that drills down into all of the technical differences that we could simply not cover in five or ten minutes. If you want to check that out there's a full post on my blog along with a video that goes through all of the real nitty-gritty technical bits it leaves no stone unturned. We faced a common problem with this site that many people might face and when we were trying to rank it the search results were dominated by huge brands huge, huge, huge brands and that's quite scary when you're looking at it. What we noticed is the brands that were ranking specifically the pages that were ranking were only ranking out of the strength of the domains Authority. They were not ranking because of individual page level metrics like backlinks that men that if we focused on page-level metrics we had an opportunity. For example where a site like Holland and Barrett might be ranking number three, but with zero links to the page. Yes, if we build a page it's got 15 links to it we've beaten them on page-level metrics and that gives us an opportunity to compete in the search results. That was the common theme of this case study we were looking for search results where sites were purely ranking out on the main level metrics rather than page level and then we optimized all of the page level metrics in order to compete. Now the health niche is seriously, seriously competitive, but that approach allowed us to find lots of opportunities that once we approached it with that mindset and that's how we got the competitive advantage with the entire strategy that was really the foothold that allowed us to take control. Once we identified the opportunity, it was in just a case of looking at our competitors seeing what they were doing why they were doing it how they were doing it. We were looking at what they did that we liked, what we didn't like where they're using trust signals on the page was the content aligning to intent we really just did a very manual observation of the search results to see what we felt. Now, manual observation, the power of observation is one of the most underutilized skills you can have as a human being, like in general life. Not only in SEO but we can learn so much as by observing and in the SEO world, we're often distracted by big data and tools and analytics and all these other things that actually stops us from just using the computer between our ears. Quite often you can just look at a search result and just ask yourself questions, why is this ranking and look through the data and come up with your own observations rather than just looking at what a tool says. That's important to do because you really start to get a feel not just for the SEO of the niche, because every niche is different, but also who your competitors are. Why are they your competitors, what they do good, what they do bad? It becomes more of a business exercise and it's something that's lost on many SEOs and people skip over. Once we decided on our strategy, we observe the search results and we found our opportunities, then it was just a case of going and making sure we had build a solid site structure that Google loves and humans love. I drilled down more into that in the post be`cause it gets very technical and the issues this site had is unique to this site. We have issues with page speeds, site structure, duplicate content, had some issues with trust signals and a few other areas. Have a look at the full case study and see if your site suffers from any of those problems as well. If it does, you need to fix them. Once we've taken care of there was like seven or eight key issues that was preventing us from building a solid foundation that Google loves. Once we built that, it was then just a case of creating content. Now, we created the content of the back of the manual observation we've done in the search results. We've made a note of what was ranking, what we liked about it, what we didn't like about it and so forth. We went out and created content that matched that specifications. One of the biggest wins we had was with the home page where we deployed I think around 10,000 words of content. Sorry, the home page originally had 1,500 words of content on it. We increased that to nearly 11,000 words just by answering 20 of the most popular questions in the niche. The impact on that was the home page went from ranking for like a handful or keywords to over 11,000 different keywords just by adding about 10,000 words of content to the home page. We went out and we made sure all of the content we were creating for our target keywords is at least equal to or slightly better than our competitors. There's literally no reason to be ten-timesing your content, you've just got to match or better your competitors. Once that was in place, it was just a case of acquiring links from relevant sites and trust me, many, many people struggle link building, but link building is really, really, really easy when you've created content that people actually want to link to. It's a much easier sell when you picture, hey, look at this awesome post when it is actually awesome and that's a big part that many people will miss when they're so focused on link building. They can't see the woods for the trees and then they miss out on much bigger opportunities and end up spending a bunch more money than they need to, to acquire the same amount of links. Once we have taken care of on-site structure, technical SEO, the content and then the link building, those three basic pillars of SEO. We saw traffic grow from 2,700 per month to 38,000. That's a 14 time increase in 8 months in one of the most competitive niches on the planet. We did it solely by taking care of the every basic pillars of SEO, wasn't complicated and that's the biggest advantage that you often have in it in SEO. Just by using the power of manual observation and seeing where you can fit in with things rather than relying on tools and analysis and this and that and the other. Just look for those opportunities with your eyes and then make sure you do the basics right, because if you do the very basics right of any business whether it's SEO or offline business, whatever it is, if you do the very basics right, you always see success and that is very much the case with SEO. Peter: All right, thank you. A couple of very interesting things were mentioned, home page started ranking for giant number of keywords. Usually I would say that the home page, because it has to look nice and it doesn't really have as much content, it would usually rank for the brand keywords and more or less nothing else, but you switched that and wanted to get the home page ranked. How can be a home page competitive to 1,000 worded article from the competition? Matthew: The home page usually has the most weight in terms of SEO. It usually has the most authority and you're right, most people only use a home page to try and rank for brand terms. What we did was we just made a list of the most popular questions in the niche and answered them. In you know, when you clicked to expand the question and it reveals the answer? That on it's own attracted a bunch of long tail keywords that were all relevant to our niche and then also reinforce all of our topical relevance. That was just something that tried on that site and we have great, great, great success with that. Peter: All right, so it should be tried at other places too. Matthew: Yes, and I've just have to point it out, beyond just finding out what the top questions where and answering to them, there was no keyword research that went into it. There wasn't any like strategy or planning that went into it. It was just, okay, let's answer all of these super relevant questions on the home page and see what happens, and that's what we did. Peter: Very interesting, the tools got to compare yourself to the competition, Pop or Quora or others are really, really popular right now in SEO in the last couple of months. You're saying, use your brain and just see for yourself and you're going to understand your competition much better than using the tools. Matthew: Yes, I'm not saying don't use the tools, but the tools shouldn't be the first thing that you use. The first thing that you should do is use the computer between your ears, do the search yourself, look at the search results, manually review them both on a desktop and a mobile phone and get a feel for it. Often just by looking, you see opportunities and while everyone else is distracted with automation and tools, you can just observe. It's how I see most of my success in life, I just sit back and observe. Observe the people that are winning, observe the people that are losing. Why are they winning? Why are they losing? Why is this person doing that? Why do they making it? Just sit back and observe and if you apply that to the search results, I learn more just observing search results and doing random searches like best gaming laptop. I like watching how that search result has changed over the years. Two years ago you would've found a bunch of amazon affiliate sites there. Right now, there's not a single affiliate site there. Just that kind of observations tells you the direction that things are moving in. If you're building Amazon affiliate sites and you're not building businesses right now, well the search results are already telling you you're making the wrong decision. That's the power of observation, it's underutilized not just in SEO but in general life as well. Peter: Yes, and I had a boss once who every morning he wanted to type all of the costs and income for the different marketing channels into the spreadsheet himself. He went through the numbers every day himself with his own brain and understood and of course, now the company has grown to up 300 people. Matthew: Yes. That's- Peter: There is an idea of understanding, getting the deep understanding of the field is the additional benefit. Matthew: Yes, that's a very intelligent decision by him because he could just have someone else enter the numbers him read the data, but when you read the data you're not analyzing it in the same way as when you're actually in the got to doing it. Very smart move by your boss and I think there's a lesson there for all of the SEO community to take [laughs] Including myself actually. Peter: All right Matthew. I think we had a very nice summation of your presentation at the Affiliate World in Barcelona. As mentioned, we'll add links to your blog post with your video and to your short presentation to the show notes. Where can people find you, contact you and of course read stuff that you write on your blog? Matthew: Yes, the best way to read anything by me is to hit matthewwood.co.uk. There's a ton of content there that answers pretty much every SEO question you can ever think of. You'll also find a case study section and you'll find this case study, How We 14 Times Search Traffic. The case study includes all of the technical details that I wasn't able to include on the talk along with a video that steps you through the entire thing. I'm hoping that it's one of the best SEO videos you've ever seen, so leave me a comment and let me know if that's the case. Peter: All right, let everyone go and check that. Do you have any future conference plans already set up? Matthew: I'm going to be talking at Chiang Mai SEO in November and I got a couple of a potential bookings next year that we're just ironing out the details of [laugh] but Chiang Mai SEO will be next one, yes Peter: One more thing, when I went through our communication in Gmail, I searched for your name and then I found out when was the first time when I really met you but contact with you. It was probably last year. I think it was last year when you were having SEO Black Friday deals. Matthew: Oh yes. Yes. Peter: Black Friday is coming slowly. Are you having something similar this year too? Matthew: Yes. For the last five or six years, I've published a site, internetmarketing.blackfriday, which covers all of the Black Friday deals across the SEO and blogging niche. I think last year we had like a whole 120 different deals loaded and I think 11 of them were exclusive to us as well. That's something that I've been doing for quite a long time and we'll be doing it this year as well. Peter: All right. Excellent. I think that's it. Thank you very much for being on the podcast. It was extremely informational. Matthew: Yes. Perfect. Peter: Glad for having you here and have a great day. Matthew: Thank you very much. It's been great to be here.

Stan's Lesson Outline: MATTHEW Lesson 73
On today's show I talk to musician Peter Matthew Bauer. Partly raised on ashrams in India and the Catskills, Peter mostly grew up in Washington DC. It was there he met his future bandmates in The Walkmen, and he even had a high school band with lead singer Hamilton Leithauser. From 1996 to 1999, Peter and Hamilton played in The Recoys together, and in 2000, The Walkmen formed from the ashes of The Recoys and Jonathan Fire*Eater. After putting out seven albums, the band is currently on an "extended hiatus". This gave Peter the opportunity to record his own album - Liberation! - and tour behind it. I really love it, and it's available now!Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and check out my new gameshow podcast Snap Impression!
