Robotext surge can undermine your organization, but can be stopped: fraudulent use of texting is getting more sophisticated “This is a monstrously huge problem,” says Chris Drake Senior Vice President, Corporate and Business Development at iconectiv. According to Robokiller, Americans received 78 billion robotexts in the first half of 2023, an 18% increase from the same time frame last year, and these texts are often linked to scams. “It's a massive problem.” The robotext issue is made more acute by the migration of many people, away from voice, to use text as a primary, and perhaps, even more trusted, communications platform. 98% of text messages are read, an engagement rate far above email. Meanwhile, fraudulent use of texting is getting more sophisticated, with even seasonality, capitalizing on events or holidays (holiday sales), pushing familiar ethnic or national button to get people to reply. Since 2020, businesses can now text, making it easier for impersonators to present themselves as trusted brands. “The fraudsters know you're going to see them. That's the key thing.” In this podcast, Drake presents the extent of the problem and then discusses steps to protect yourself. Drake lays out some basic and nearly free of cost steps to protect yourself, your credit, and your devices. We learn about a variety of free resources and ways to share experiences to report and increase the body of available knowledge on threat. Protecting Your Business Drake walks us through the way iconectiv is helping customers achieve a secure digital identity. As the Local Number Portability Administrator (LNPA) for the United States, iconectiv manages the nation's Number Portability Administration Center (NPAC). We learn about programs such as short code registry, registered caller, Telecommunications Relay Services Numbering Directory for Internet-based TRS (iTRS) and Calling Number Verification Service. Now is a good time to get going on addressing these matters, as an organization. Texting's criticality is only going to increase. Visit https://iconectiv.com/

Smishing texts have increased over 60% in just one year. With scammers spoofing caller ID, how can you trust any communication coming onto your phone? Today's guest is Giulia Porter. Giulia is the Vice President of RoboKiller, the app that eliminates 99% of spam calls. Since 2017, Giulia has been leading RoboKiller's vision to create a world without spam calls. And now more recently with spam texts, they've introduced Text Killer. Show Notes: [1:04] - Giulia shares her background and why she was led to a career with cyber security. [2:24] - Caller ID spoofing is when a scammer changes what number comes up on your phone when they call. There is also neighbor spoofing. [4:30] - Technology has allowed scammers to call from any number, including your own. [5:54] - Scammers try to stay ahead of trends. [6:30] - Stir/Shaken is a framework designed to help stop spam call problems. [8:12] - Most United States phone providers did implement this. [10:10] - Giulia explains how this framework works and some of the pitfalls it has. [12:08] - As of May, we are at about 6.5 billion estimated spam calls in the United States per day. About 35-40% of those use caller ID spoofing. [13:19] - Spam texts are on the rise having experienced a 60% increase in one year. [15:01] - Text Killer tries to distinguish between spam and unwanted texts. [16:21] - Giulia describes a court case against Facebook that changed the landscape of notification texts. [18:01] - Some people have a “burner phone” with a separate number that they use for accounts that require a phone number. [21:03] - Giulia shares some of the scams that were trending in the last couple of years and what scammers were targeting. [22:20] - In 2022, there has been an increase in illicit spam texts. [24:27] - Don't tap links in texts or reply to them. Delete the text. [26:18] - Thinking about your phone number in a more serious way is a way to be more aware of how many people have access to it. [27:56] - Chris shares something you can do about your personally identifiable information online. [29:20] - RoboKiller and Text Killer use AI and machine learning to analyze calls and texts to stop them from reaching you. [30:50] - You can talk to your carrier to find what protection they offer. [32:01] - Another concern is lobbyists paying providers to have select campaign texts to come through. [33:13] - You can report spam texts and notify your carrier. [34:52] - How does Robo and Text Killer make sure the numbers and texts that are blocked are accurate? [38:12] - RoboKiller has to work with different providers and that creates challenges when they all function slightly differently. [40:38] - The next wave of scams are through apps like WhatsApp and Messenger. [43:12] - Organizations need to also consider how much they lose to scams posing as them. [45:12] - RoboKiller is available online as well in the app store on iPhones and Android. There are free services and premium. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Robokiller is a mobile app that blocks annoying spam calls and telemarketers. As VP of Marketing, Giulia Porter is all about creating an efficient mobile tech stack that drives revenue. Prior to Robokiller she was a customer success manager at HubSpot. She wants the martech world to give mobile more love. She advocates for tools like AppsFlyer, Leanplum and her personal favorite Looker to optimize the mobile tech stack. In this episode, she shares her insights on mobile attribution; how it's actually easier than web attribution because a mobile app typically has only a couple touches before someone installs the app. She also shares how Robokiller has been finding direct mail to be effective and why depending on your ICP, this might be a great route to consider. She also shares how Robokiller learned the hard way why load testing is so crucial when their app crashed due to a flood of customers after a nightly news spot. If you want to learn more about Giulia's perspectives on mobile tech stacks, we highly recommend her 2019 article “Stacking Your Tech Stack for Mobile App Growth”. Join us every week as we journey to the bleeding edge of the modern tech stack. You'll hear from real experts on how to nail your strategy, build a revenue machine and take your sales to the next level.

Remember the old show Robocop? There's phone software called Robokiller that I've been running into lately. Google assistant also makes an attempt to screen phone calls. I'm going to share my Robocop method or how to get around Robokiller, Google Assistant, etc, when making calls. I also share examples of these calls and share why my method is so effective. I also talk about the double call method and listening to the recipient's voice mail message. I share examples of what to listen for and how to match tone and temple with one of the four types of prospects. I also go back to the tried and true method of listening for mistakes and breaking the ice with a pattern interrupt. I round things out with an often overlooked method of getting referrals that really works and is very easy. Episode Highlights: [01:56] In 1987, there was a show called Robocop. I've noticed that I've run into something called the Robokiller when I'm making phone calls. [03:46] When dealing with the Robokiller use their first name and yours. An example of this would be Bill, this is Dave. Don't try to sell to the gatekeeper. The secret is to not say too much. [05:36] The Google Assistant wants to know what you're calling about. Just say hi Doug, this is Dave. Use the technique Robocop less is more. [08:21] Treat the prospect how they want to be treated. Also listen to the voicemail, because that gives you a clue about the recipient's personality. [09:07] The dominant person sounds like a big old bass drum and the influencer is laughing and giggling. You can pick up on the tone and tempo of their message. The people who are steadys need you to be soft when you respond and embrace silence. The fourth member is compliant, and they follow the rules. [10:07] Focus on tone and tempo when you listen to their voice message on your first dial. You need to be prepared with the double dial and understand whether they are dominant, an influencer, a steady, or compliant. [11:15] Be bold and brave. They'll probably answer after the double dial. [12:17] Listening for mistakes. Use a pattern interrupt to get them off track. Don't say what everyone expects. A couple of examples of pattern interrupts. [15:41] 64% of your customer base wants to refer and recommend you, they just don't know how. 20% of your customer base is thinking about leaving you. This is why I always encourage people to make phone calls. You can learn more in my book Fearless Communication. [18:39] This week's tip is who do you know that I should know. When following up, always ask who do you know that I should know. [20:28] A customer sharing the importance of asking the simple question of who do you know that I should know. Don't miss out on that opportunity with your current and past customers. [22:28] Today we talked about looking for a mistake. Getting past that Robocop. What do you do? Less is more. Several third-party apps—including Hiya, RoboKiller, Truecaller, and YouMail—also work to block telemarketing calls. And you can also register your phone number with the FTC's Do Not Call Registry, though that won't stop scammers and disreputable telemarketers from calling you
In this week’s episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast, we (Sean and Ethan) invite you into our virtual living rooms for a cup of coffee and a bit of a change from our usual conversations with CEO’s, heads of growth, and leaders from the world’s fastest-growing companies. Our goal with the podcast is always to make growth more human, accessible, and actionable for our listeners. So as we start this new year, we wanted to look forward to what is next in the world of Breakout Growth through the lens of our own struggles, fears, accomplishments, and learnings. Like many of you, during this tough year of transition, we have had rollercoaster rides of our own, and in this conversation, we start by sharing what we learned as we worked together for the first time in 20 years to launch a network-effects project to help underserved college students navigate through the pandemic. It felt good to do good, but it also forced us to sharpen our data skills, hone in on value delivery for end-users, and evolve our processes for rapid iteration. It was a scary time because while we enjoyed making a difference, we also knew that we would ultimately have to rethink our approach to our own careers. Sean was coaching and training growth teams around the world and Ethan was pivoting to a similar career from his success leading the mobile app, RoboKiller. We had to adapt so that we could help companies accelerate growth despite the emerging challenges. The journey has not always been easy, but it helped us to better develop our understanding of a set of core principles for sustainable growth, which we are excited to share over the coming weeks on a new website that will complement and expand on learnings from the podcast. We discuss these and many other topics, as well as the new things we are excited to learn in 2021 so that we can continue to provide valuable insights into the world of growth for our audience. We discussed: * Fear and transition in the face of Covid-19 (01:00) * Working together and putting growth skills into practice in response to the Covid-19 pandemic (4:08) * Sharpening our data skills as Sean launched GoPractice for the US market with Oleg Yakubenkov (7:00) * Upskilling ourselves and teams; the importance of being able to pull your own data (8:09) * What we learned interviewing leaders from the world’s fastest-growing companies (15:20) * Translating key learnings to make an impact on our clients and their businesses (17:33) * Adjusting our workshop formats to meet the demands of a remote workforce (21:05) * Forming North Star Metrics and making them useful within an organization (25:15) * The pursuit of “fit” (Product/Market, Language/Market, Channel/Market, etc. (35:30) * Guiding principles that we will highlight on our new site, BreakoutGrowth.net (42:42) * How value sits at the center of every growth engine and drives organizations forward (51:00) * What we are looking forward to learning and sharing in 2021 (55:00) And much, much, more . . .

Gabe, Ryan, and Jon understand all too well how distractions can really derail your entire day. If you feel like you’re getting pulled in a ton of different directions that aren’t moving the needle, then it’s important that you listen to this episode! The guys share how they minimize their distractions by being conscious of what they decide to take on. Key Takeaways: Gabe manages his distractions by having an assistant. It’s a game-changer. Gabe knows that email is a huge time-waster for him and so his assistant tracks how much time he spends on email. The biggest trick is that Gabe doesn’t even look at his email. His assistant does and they do a call about it. Jon agrees. The first hire he does is a personal assistant. What’s the best communication platform the guys use to communicate with the team? Why does Jon love Google Voice? The least responsive employees tend to be the most productive. Callrail can be a great tool to use when you have a potential sales lead coming in. There is software called Robokiller which won’t allow spam calls to come through. Ryan has a hard time letting go and filtering his messages/phone calls. “Do you have a minute” meetings are killers. Jon really doesn’t like to be contacted. You have to get your day-to-day time down to 10 hours a week. Look into why you have so many distractions. Is it because you haven’t empowered your team enough to make decisions? How does Ryan best manage his distractions? On today’s episode, Amanda talks to Melissa DePino and Michelle Saahene, the women responsible for the viral video of two black men unjustly arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks. DePino and Saahene became fast friends and began Privilege To Progress, a national movement to desegregate the public conversation about race. DePino and Saahene explain why they decided to start an anti-racism movement with a relative stranger. They offer advice for how we can grow our understanding of each other’s experiences without creating more distance between us and the concept of “white identity development.” Finally, they explain how to productively use social media to promote anti-racism and share why they are still disappointed in Starbucks’ “efforts” at diversity and inclusion. They discuss how Georgia’s elections have melted down in the past, and how this may be a preview of what’s to come in the general election. Next, they react to Senate Republicans introducing their own legislation to address police reform. Finally, they close the show with a conversation about staying vigilant without burning out. They explain how Minneapolis hopes to “dismantle” its police department, actions Congress is taking, and run through the various ways activists refer to police reform. What does it mean to “defund” vs “abolish” the police? Finally, they explain why evidence-based approaches to reducing law enforcement presence in communities aren’t nearly as radical as they sound. Today on the Sup podcast, Kaitlin and Alise recap another night of protests in America, in which police brutalized people at a protest against police brutality. Kaitlin explains how this period of civil unrest compares to previous social movements and how the presence of white allies has historically impacted outcomes. The hosts talk frankly about the egregious omissions in the American education system that erase black history and conceal white complicity. Finally, they grapple with the question of “what can I do?” to address a problem literally as old as America. On this episode of the Sup, Amanda and Alise start the show with a conversation about how the president chose to address this crisis yesterday, including a conference call where he told state leaders to do whatever it takes to “dominate” protesters. They discuss Trump’s first public statement where he spewed nonsense on the need for “law and order” and threatened to send in the US military to violently disperse “mobs” across the country. Next, they react to his photo op at a DC church and how, shortly after, the bishop of that church denounced the president’s actions. Plus, they talk about groups of armed vigilantes instigating tense standoffs with peaceful protesters. Finally, they close the show with details about two independent autopsy reports that both deemed George Floyd’s death a homicide. On today’s episode of the Sup podcast, Sami, Amanda, and Bryan reflect on a painful weekend in America, and take some time to consider our role as allies and how we can use this platform. Amanda shares her experiences in an NYC protest, how it differed from the violence played across our screens, and how tensions actually escalate on the ground. They also react to people admonishing the “rioters” and “looters” and explain why we need to make space for anger…. just like we have for any social movement that involves white people. On today’s Sup pod, Amanda interviews Senator Tammy Duckworth about her efforts to address loopholes in the CARES Act, namely those that prevented families with newborns from accessing economic relief because the government didn’t know they existed yet. Duckworth, who became the first senator to give birth in office and is experiencing the pandemic with two small children, explains how her perspective improves policy made in a chamber of largely old, white men. Is the “Karen” who asks to speak to the manager the same Karen who incites violence against black people? On this episode of the Sup Coronacast, Alise and Bryan return from the long weekend to talk about Trump spending his time insulting women on Twitter, peddling vile conspiracy theories, raising the specter of mass voter fraud to delegitimize mail in voting, and golfing yet again. They discuss the baseless accusations against Joe Scarborough and explain why this latest conspiracy theory is so alarming. Next, they discuss Trump raising a stink about mail in voting and describe how the GOP is actively trying to suppress voter turnout (what else is new). They start with a conversation about how he might have gotten sick, when things took a turn for the worse, and what it took to get admitted to the hospital. He describes the day-to-day experience for people who have been hospitalized with the virus separated from their loved ones, including how he maintained his sanity in isolation. On this episode of the Daily Coronacast, our hosts start with a conversation about Trump disbanding his coronavirus task force just as the death total surpasses 70,000 people. Next, they talk about why federal and state governments are eager to move on from coronavirus as mounting evidence shows this disease is killing primarily people of color. They discuss the ways in which this disproportionate impact on people of color is often swept under the rug, and how institutional racism accounts for much of the disparity. Marketing is effective when it is useful and impactful, and we get actionable advice on how you can be both from Giulia Porter, VP Marketing at TelTech, a mobile communications apps company best known for RoboKiller, a robocall blocker app that is also one of the top-grossing apps in its category. Guilia, a Mobile Hero recognized for her app marketing achievements, shares the channels and strategies her team relies on to acquire and retain audiences. In this episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast, Sean Ellis interviews Ethan Garr, the SVP of Growth at Teltech, the makers of RoboKiller. RoboKiller has been nominated by Apple as the App of The Day in addition to consistently being ranked in the top twenty for utility app downloads. It has been featured on both local and national news programs around the USA as an important solution to battling robo callers. Due largely to the growth success of RoboKiller, Teletech was acquired by IAC earlier this year. Sean’s goal with this interview is to deconstruct what is truly driving breakout growth for RoboKiller. Their growth starts with strong product/market fit and the worthy mission of reducing the number of robocalls that annoy all of us on a daily basis. Their solution is a mobile app that detects robocalls and wastes the time of the spammer by keeping them on the line with a recorded voice that appears to be a real human. The more these callers waste their time with the RoboKiller bots, the less time they have to annoy us. In his role at RoboKiller, Ethan helped to conceptualize the RoboKiller solution, iterate it to product-market fit, and ultimately drive its scale and adoption to a breakout hit. Ethan credits their success to, “product-market fit, people, and passion.” He believes that when these three points intersect, they drive rapid, sustainable growth. The team has conducted obsessive optimizations and an aggressive outbound PR effort. Early in their career, Ethan and Sean worked together in marketing to build Uproar.com, the largest online gaming community at the time, which listed on NASDAQ and was acquired by Vivendi Universal in 2001. NEW SHUTDOWN THREAT The Government Shutdown That Suspended "Do Not Call Registry" Caused Huge Spike In Spam Calls Nationwide-Businesses And Consumers Experienced Onslaught Of Robocalls Stretching Hitting The Record Of Nearly 5.5 Billion For January ROBOCALLS EXPERT: Ethan Garr, RoboKiller’s VP of Product. Don’t pick up that phone. Americans have been plagued with an increasing number of robocalls — and the government can’t do anything about it. Both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are closed due to the government shutdown, which means Americans can’t file complaints on FCC or FTC websites and regulators are unable to investigate. In the last few months, the FCC has slapped some of the worst serial offenders with multimillion-dollar fines. The FTC’s website for its National Do Not Call Registry now redirects to the message: “Due to the government shutdown, we are unable to offer this website service at this time.” Consumers can’t add their numbers to the list and telemarketers cannot refer to the list before making their calls. Scammers have even begun using the government shutdown itself to target Americans, the Washington Post reported. Robokiller directly attributed this substantial increase in spam calls to the "Do Not Call" National Registry being suspended do to the shutdown. "This allowed spammers and scam artists to directly bypass the "Do Not Call" list that was designed to keep them at bay. Many businesses were affected as their phone systems being inundated with robocalls stretching their infrastructure thin. said Ethan Garr, RoboKiller’s VP of Product. “Our Answer Bots were fighting back against this wave; answering these calls, engaging the live operators and wasting the telemarketers’ time. Since August, 2018, Robocalls nationwide were tracking at around 5 Billion per month. In January, the newly released data showed a spike to nearly 5.5 Billion calls. Tis the season to gain a lot of weight. Try to avoid it, but don't feel too bad if it happens. Remember, it's about health, not about other peoples' expectations. Another thing to avoid is telemarketing scams. Robokiller can help with that. As can cutting yourself off from civilization entirely. Your App Lady Show Notes Series 1 Episode 36 Welcome to series 1 episode 36 of the Your App Lady Podcast! All about apps and tech that I love and use every day. On each episode, I’ll talk about recent tech news, recommend apps that I use myself and leave you with a great tech tip. Tech News Robocalls have become a huge problem. The Federal Trade Commission received over 375,000 complaints about them each month in 2017. The included article outlines some of the steps you can take to decrease the annoyance of robocalls. Some of the tips include blocking each number individually, using a service through your phone carrier or using a third party app. The article also suggests that you don’t let them know you are a human (don’t speak or even push buttons on your phone), complain to the FCC and add yourself to the National Do Not Call Registry. Telemarketers are supposed to honor the National Do Not Call Registry. Add yourself to the list by visiting www.donotcall.gov. https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/6/17071478/spam-calls-how-to-stop-block-robocalls-robots-scam-iphone-android Featured App: RoboKiller Stop Spam Phone Calls by Tel Tech Systems for iPhone I tried RoboKiller app on my iPhone after I registered several domain names and was overwhelmed with RoboCalls. Within the first hour, it had already worked on a number that continually calls me. The app allows you to set a feature to answer and record the call. I used that feature and could confirm that it was a sales call and not a call I really needed to answer. RoboKiller offers a 7-day free trial and then is $25 per year or $2.99 a month.
