Poker Players Who've Murdered Their Parents + Jeff Madsen's 40th Birthday

In the 893rd episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway, Mike Holtz, and Kyna England celebrate Jeff Madsen's 40th birthday before talking about two poker players who murdered their parents. Recently in Texas, Benjamin Frakes, 39, was taken into custody at Doghouse Poker Club in Cypress, a town 25 miles northwest of Downtown Houston. He was charged with capital murder for allegedly shooting his parents. The tragic situation was reminiscent of poker player Ernie Scherer, who was convicted in 2011 of killing his parents in an elaborate plot to collect an inheritance. It's a true crime story that's been featured on 48 Hours but often overlooked by the poker world, that is, until the crew takes a look back in history and shares details of the horrific crime. Chad then offers a behind-the-scenes look at Daniel Negreanu's 25K Fantasy Draft, including an interview with the man himself, before recapping recent tournament winners from the Triton Montenegro, including Jesse Lonis, Jason Koon, and Aleksa Pavicevic. Other stories covered include the return of the PokerStars Big Game and a preview of the Bar Poker Open coming to the Golden Nugget Las Vegas from June 8-13. On this week's episode, Brad is joined by Pro Poker Player, Lydia Blair and she starts by letting Brad know she learned to play poker at 12, courtesy of her uncle, who believed Texas Hold'em was a more valuable life skill than, say, geometry. Growing up in Texas, where legal poker lives in shadowy private clubs with more rules than a Baptist bake sale, she found her groove in amateur leagues—basically fight clubs with chips and less blood. Lydia prefers live poker over online because she trusts people's twitchy eyebrows more than internet bots. While the poker world still has a serious dude imbalance, Lydia's been helping tilt the gender scales—one raised eyebrow and well-timed bluff at a time. She's played in everything from low-stakes bar tourneys to the World Series of Poker, where even the best players lose more often than they win (but look cool doing it). Then came Million Dollar Secret on Netflix, where Lydia—dubbed the “mom friend” of the cast—faced psychological evaluations, cutthroat alliances, and surprisingly decent craft services. She prepped like a pro, studying negotiation tactics and body language as if the prize were national security clearance. The reality show was tightly controlled, full of unspoken rules, unspoken tension, and very spoken drama. Lydia learned that age dynamics matter, elimination is savage, and talking about poker winnings makes people ask for loans. Whether reading a bluff or a backstab, Lydia knows the game is always about people—and she's playing to win, even if the prize is just peace and quiet.Follow Lydia here:https://www.instagram.com/lydiatexasgrandma/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/Follow the show here:https://www.instagram.com/workadviceforme/Checkout the new Hopecast website:https://thehopecastnetwork.com/Leave us a review on iTunes and Spotify. This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Network

1 US-Dollar = 1 Token. Ohne Ausnahme!

She quickly fell in love with it and just wanted to ride further and further. Last year she put her career, as a professional poker player, on hold to focus on riding her bike. Her first bikepacking race was the inaugural Great American Wheel Race, a 3,600 mixed surface race across America which she placed 4th overall and 1st Female. Just 6 weeks later she entered the 900 mile Big Sky Spactacularie in Montana where she took 1st overall. Then only 5 days after finishing Big Sky she entered the 1,750 mile Montana Bike Odyssey and took the overall win again! Needless to say her gamble to focus on bikepacking is paying off! In my twenties and early thirties, I was a regular journaler. Several years ago, however, I stopped journaling almost entirely because I wasn't getting anything out of it anymore. But my guest has helped me see that my problem wasn't with journaling itself, but that I had gotten into a journaling rut, and he's introduced me to some new ways to journal that have inspired me to get back into the practice. Campbell Walker is an illustrator, animator, podcaster, and YouTuber, as well as the author of Your Head is a Houseboat: A Chaotic Guide to Mental Clarity. Today on the show, Cam shares how journaling transformed his life and what it can do for yours. We discuss why it's helpful to do a journaling brain dump and how to then move beyond that to incorporate different techniques that will help you get greater insight into the problems you're facing and how to solve them. We unpack those techniques, which include how to journal to break mindset, conduct a lifestyle and habits audit, and quell anxiety. We also talk about an experiment Cam did where he only used the social media apps on his phone when he was posting something, and every time he got the itch to check social media for fun, he engaged in something he calls “microjournaling” instead. We end our conversation with how Cam's journaling changed after he became a dad and his tips on making journaling a consistent habit in your life.Resources Related to the EpisodeCampbell's Video: The Journaling Techniques That Changed My LifeCampbell's Video: I Replaced Social Media With Micro-Journaling for 1 YearAoM Article: The Right and Wrong Way to JournalAoM Article: Why I Stopped JournalingAoM Article: 30 Days to a Better Man Day 8 — Start a JournalAoM Article: Jumpstart Your Journaling — A 31-Day ChallengeAoM Article: 31 Journaling Prompts for Building Greater Self-RelianceAoM Article: Quit Catastrophizing AoM Podcast #387: Think Like a Poker Player to Make Better Decisions (With Annie Duke)Connect With Campbell Walker (AKA “Struthless”)Cam on YouTubeCam on IGThe Struthless Shop WebsiteThe Struthless Animation Studio Website
