In this episode of The Valley Current®, host Jack Russo chats with attorney Maxwell McGhee to unpack this provocative question: Who are the “Medicaid Millionaires”? They dive into how wealthy individuals legally shield assets to qualify for government benefits meant for the needy—using savvy trusts, real estate loopholes, and strategic planning. Jack and Maxwell challenge the morality and legality of these tactics, exploring how the system gets gamed and what reforms could level the playing field. It's a sharp, eye-opening conversation about law, ethics, and the surprising ways wealth and welfare can intersect. Is it possible to have sympathy for a killer? Cursed with the mental development of a child and an IQ of 52, John Hogendobler was an impoverished farmer with a heart of gold. And after he shot his wife in 1941, there were many who believed Hogendobler had gotten a raw deal-- by the Department of Public Assistance, by Northumberland County officials, by his own attorneys, and by life in general. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/paoddities/support

The Ministry of Equity, under the stewardship of Hon. Joachim A. Henry, is seeking to realign and strengthen the Public Assistance Programme (PAP), through the implementation of a much-needed Strategy for Graduation aimed at empowering beneficiaries and fostering economic independence. Empowering individuals rather than fostering dependence on social support services is central to the initiative's success. Minister Henry underscored The government's commitment to this principle recently, as he highlighted future plans for the rollout of the Strategy for Graduation from Social Assistance in Saint Lucia (2022-2030). In his April 25, 2024-2025 Budget presentation, Minister Henry assured that his Ministry would apply the strategic approach outlined in the Strategy document to the Public Assistance Programme.

Forty-seven people in Bemidji were still out of their homes Thursday after the city evacuated a subsidized housing facility. Most residents of the Red Pine Estates were older or disabled adults. Public assistance used to look different in Bemidji. In the early 1900s, the Beltrami County Poor Farm gave care and shelter to folks in need. MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer looked back into that time period with historian Cecelia McKeig for the regular segment, Minnesota Now and Then.
6/5/23 If Artificial Intelligence had an evil twin, it would be Automation. A World of Artificial Intelligence and Automation together will have no work for Humans. What will Humans do without Jobs/Labor? Will they become useless? Or will the flourish with unlimited time to follow their passions and work of fulfilling their desires? A solution to a Jobless Society is being debated by the powers that be. This week we will discuss 2 solutions they have proposed to quell the effects of a World in which Human Labor is no longer required. 1 Solutions is UBI aka Universal Basic Income. We discussed this before a few years ago. UBI will work sort of like the Public Assistance system we have in place today. Everyone will receive a check (Digital Currency) for a specified amount to compensate for a Jobless Society. Sounds crazy but think the Stimulus program and PPP Loans they rolled out during Covid when people who were unable to work recieved weekly Monetary Assistance.

We also talk about his experience on the TV show Alter Ego (Fox) and his work as a design researcher. I'm so thankful for James' vulnerability - I know you will feel encouraged and inspired when you listen. James Paek is a singer/songwriter who sits at the intersection of music and spirituality. Having been a part of projects as a songwriter and vocalist both inside and outside of the Church (Pablo Nouvelle, Yngcult, Kylan Road, Willow Worship, Je'kob), James is now venturing out as an artist in his own namesake with the upcoming release of his debut EP entitled "Exit Us" produced by Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Jon Foreman) and James Krausse (Half Alive). "Exit Us" is an exploration of healing, of mourning, of questioning, and of leaving a what was once known to venture into what is honest. James Paek is a pastor, artist and design researcher. Although James has been serving in ministry as a worship leader and speaking pastor for over 15 years (Willow, CCV), James' exploratory and artistic spirit has seen him visit other areas of interest and passion. In 2016, James' fascination with technology and human centered design had him working alongside civilla, Google, and Ideo Consultants with Ei on projects at the intersection of innovation and social good. For instance, James worked with the Michigan Department of Human and Health Services reimagining the Public Assistance application process (Project Re:form). James' first love, music, has driven him to write songs and perform from a young age. James has written songs for both mainstream and gospel artists including Pablo Nouvelle & Je'kob of the Dove Award Winning Souljahz, while also creating for his band, Kylan Road. With renewed energy after taking a sabbatical for the majority of 2021 and being a part of Season 1 of Alter Ego, James is ready to share his debut solo project EXIT US with the world (coming soon). Renee Shaw and guests discuss legislation concerning public assistance and jobless benefits. Guests: Dustin Pugel, senior policy analyst at the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy; Bryan Sunderland, state government affairs director for the Foundation for Government Accountability; Bill Londrigan, president of the Kentucky State AFL-CIO; and Anne-Tyler Morgan, attorney and McBrayer PLLC member.
Everyone needs help when it comes to housing and nutrition. Let's set the record straight the majority of the people on public assistance are white people, seeing how they are the majority of the population. Everyone looks down on Blacks and Latinos but it's not just us, it's everybody getting over on the system. My issue with public assistance is when people exploit it and use it to jog in place. Literally, striding to do the bare minimum in life just to keep their benefits and be taken care of. Will and able people choosing sit on their behinds, is something that I will never get behind nor support. Especially, when as a community us black could be doing even better.

Derica Shields joins Nikita Gale and Alexander Provan to speak about the value of listening to Black peoples' accounts and analyses of their own lives. They discuss Shields's book-length oral history of Black experiences of the welfare state, “A Heavy Nonpresence,” recently published by Triple Canopy. Shields reflects on her effort to share the stories of Black people who are mistreated and monitored by the state, while also being made to feel that they should be grateful for receiving the assistance to which they're entitled. Her work shows how, in Britain, liberal nostalgia for the so-called care of the state is premised on not listening to those who receive benefits—and how politicians and journalists enable Black people to be shamed for doing so by upholding the age-old distinction between the deserving and undeserving poor (as if colonialism never happened). With Gale and Provan, Shields listens to and discusses excerpts from “A Heavy Nonpresence,” which includes accounts of seven Londoners whose lives are entwined with the welfare system. Shields advocates for oral history as a way of enabling marginalized people to be heard—and to hear each other—as well as to mitigate shame and circulate survival strategies. She notes that government assistance for Black people tends to be thought of as contingent on “good behavior,” but observes a recent shift in public opinion and political discourse, due to a reckoning with Britain's history of colonialism and racism. Rather than act thankful for the rewards of navigating an inhumane bureaucracy, more and more people are saying: “We are here, and the same rights accrue to us.” Derica Shields is a writer, researcher, and cultural worker living in London. She is the author of the forthcoming book Bad Practice (Book Works, 2021). Her work has been published by Frieze, Flash Art, Cell Project Space, and the New Inquiry, and presented by the Institute for Contemporary Arts (London) and Spectacle Theater (Brooklyn), among other publications and institutions. With Gale and Provan, Shields speaks about Beverly Bryan, Stella Dadzie and Suzanne Scafe, The Heart of the Race (Virago Press, 1985); Johnnie Tillmon, “Welfare Is a Women's Issue,” Ms., spring 1972; a video of the Labour MP David Lammy lambasting the British government for deporting immigrants on April 16, 2018; and a newsreel of West Indian workers, including the famed calypso musician Lord Kitchener, arriving in London aboard the SS Empire Windrush in 1948.Medium Rotation is produced by Alexander Provan with Andrew Leland, and edited by Provan with Matt Frassica. Tashi Wada composed the theme music. Matt Mehlan acted as audio engineer and contributed additional music.Medium Rotation is made possible through generous contributions from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Nicholas Harteau. This season of Medium Rotation is part of Triple Canopy's twenty-sixth issue, Two Ears and One Mouth, which receives support from the Stolbun Collection, the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, Agnes Gund, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
