She's overweight, independent and unmarried in a society that values slim, obedient women. And at 26, she is hurtling towards her expiration date in Mumbai's arranged marriage super-mart. But when her family's matchmaking finally works, everything seems to be on the up - all until she is offered a dream job in New York City. Zoya must now make the choice of a lifetime, but not without a few cultural casualties and, of course, an accidental love story along the way....

Come one, come all, it's time for another edition of #Millennial! Where the adulting is pretend and the talk is real. Have you filled out the census (https://2020census.gov/) yet? Don't forget to be counted! We'll be hosting a coffee break with our friends over at MuggleCast (https://www.mugglecast.com) , open to all! Join us Wednesday 4/1 from 3-4 PM EST - links will be posted on social! The Number is back to show us just how much more time we're all spending streaming, gaming, and binging. In happy news, many of us have purportedly reverted to simpler methods of entertainment: puzzle making, cooking, going for actual WALKS. To keep ourselves entertained for the long haul, we're committing to catching up on pop culture we've missed: Laura will watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Andrew The West Wing, and Pam The Matrix trilogy. Will they or won't they provide ventilators to NYC's overwhelmed hospitals? This week in Corona gives the latest updates on the pandemic, as well as breaks down what to expect from the $2 trillion stimulus passed by Congress last week. Laura's successfully gotten a deferral on a few of her monthly bills for April, and she's got some tips about how you can too! BAE Ning Xi joins us all the way from Singapore, and clearly has superior internet to all of us. We chat about working out from home (WOFH?) with Ning Xi, and she shares her journey as well as her favorite at-home work out tips. Looking for more to keep you entertained during #shelterinplace? This week's recommendations have got you, fam: One Day At A Time season 4 (Pam), Man of Medan for PS4 (Laura), Ozark season 3 (Andrew), and "Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows" by Balli Kaur Jaswal (Ning Xi). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Pam and Andrew both have folks in their lives not taking COVID-19 seriously. How to handle people in your life who are putting others at risk! New York City put out some delightful recommendations for safe sex amidst COVID-19, and we're here to share their dos and don'ts. Sex, ok! Kissing, however, might give you the 'rona. A SPECIAL BOOK CLUB EPISODE WITH SASS In this special episode of Masala Podcast, I’m discussing the book ‘Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows' by Balli Kaur Jaswal with Shirin Shah who’s the Co-founder of SASS - South Asian Sisters Speak (SASS) as well as Mahek Mehta and Maryam Siddiqui who’ve been part of previous SASS book clubs. Described as ‘warm and hilariously funny’ – this gem of a book takes on a big taboo: sexuality among older South Asian women. We read some (saucy) extracts from the book, we discuss lots of important themes like the ‘de-sexualisation’ of older South Asian women. We talk about our perceptions of what is acceptable in South Asian culture vs. Western culture. We explore what physical displays of affections (or the lack of them) mean for us growing up as women in our culture. This is a really special episode for me, because we connected, we chatted about some important themes and we had such a laugh. ABOUT MASALA PODCAST The Spotify award-winning Masala Podcast is a show for South Asian women, where we talk about all those things that we’re NOT supposed to talk about in our culture. Sex, sexuality, periods, menopause, mental health, shame, sexual harassment and many more taboos. Lit Set come join us as we discuss this Zane meets Law and Order novel set in Southall in the UK. We follow Nikki on her journey of self discovery and enlightenment as she gain an appreciation for her cultural. Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows is full of layers and we want to unpack some of them with you. IG @blackgirllit_ blackgirllityt@gmail.com About the Author BALLI KAUR JASWAL is the author of Inheritance, which was adapted into a film at the Singapore International Festival of the Arts in 2017. Her third novel Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows was released internationally to critical acclaim in March 2017. Translation rights to this novel have been sold in11 different countries. Film rights to Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows have been acquired by Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free Productions and Film Four in the UK. Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows was also picked by Reese Witherspoon’s book club and The Girly Book Club in 2018. She has travelled widely to appear in international writers festivals to conduct workshops and lectures on creative writing, pursuing an artistic career, the power of storytelling, global citizenship and social justice advocacy through literature. A former writing fellow at the University of East Anglia, Jaswal has taught creative writing at Yale-NUS College and Nanyang Technological University where she is currently pursuing a PhD. Jaswal’s new novel, The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters, was released in April 2019. The novel is a dark comedy following the travels of three British-Indian sisters on a pilgrimage in India to fulfil their late mother’s final wishes. Book Synopsis Every woman has a secret life . . . Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she’s spent most of her twenty-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father’s death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London’s close-knit Punjabi community. Because of a miscommunication, the proper Sikh widows who show up are expecting to learn basic English literacy, not the art of short-story writing. When one of the widows finds a book of sexy stories in English and shares it with the class, Nikki realizes that beneath their white dupattas, her students have a wealth of fantasies and memories. Eager to liberate these modest women, she teaches them how to express their untold stories, unleashing creativity of the most unexpected—and exciting—kind. As more women are drawn to the class, Nikki warns her students to keep their work secret from the Brotherhood, a group of highly conservative young men who have appointed themselves the community’s "moral police." But when the widows’ gossip offers shocking insights into the death of a young wife—a modern woman like Nikki—and some of the class erotica is shared among friends, it sparks a scandal that threatens them all.

This is the third episode in a series of discussions that will feature Kristen R. Ghodsee with various guests reflecting on Alexandra Kollontai's 1923 essay: "Make Way for Winged Eros: A Letter to Working Youth." In this essay, Kollontai works out her theories of how love and sexuality will be superior under socialism as compared to the bourgeois capitalist past. She provides a Marxist history of love and sex as ideals that change depending on how the ruling class uses them to promote their own economic interests. It is an essential essay in terms of thinking about the intersections of sexuality and political economy, and it was an important inspiration for Ghodsee's 2018 book: Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence. In this episode, Kristen Ghodsee speaks with Angelina Eimannsberger, a Ph.D. student in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Pennsylvania. Angelina hosts a bookstagram account, @indulgencezine, where she discusses novels and memoirs by contemporary women writers. Also mentioned in this episode are the books Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, The Matchmaker’s List, and Bastards of Utopia. Bastards of Utopia is also a documentary film, as is Knock down the house. The intro and outro music is a Russian version of The Internationale.
