Our expectations should be that people can live a better life if they're given the right supports. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Steve Miccio. Steve is the Chief Executive Officer of PeopleUSA, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families and people with behavioral health challenges. Steve is an innovator in crisis response and mental health services. For over two decades, he has introduced groundbreaking models and approaches that reduce hospital utilization, incarceration rates, and healthcare spending. Steve was the first in the United States to embed peers in hospital psychiatric ERs. He also created the Rose House model of peer-operated crisis respites, the Transitional Care Wellness Team Model, and developed unique training programs for hospitals, local government units, and behavioral health organizations across the U.S. Recovery is an expectation. You will recover and you will thrive. And there will be ways that you're going to be able to reach your ceiling. Let's go see what it is. Today, we have the audio from our in-store event with Diana Biller, the author of The Widow of Rose House, The Brightest Star in Paris, and, most recently, Hotel of Secrets. Much like the book, Diana is brilliant and funny and gives good banter. She talks about the time a professor called her essay on jury selection “elegant”, taking herself seriously as an artist, the underrated hotness of ethical men, writing historical romances in uncommon settings and the limitations of seeing history exclusively through the lens of Georgette Heyer's interpretation of Regency England, and Diana's approach to research and writing. Then Diana takes some really excellent audience questions, and, ends, of course, with some books she's loved recently.

Today, I've invited author, Diana Biller, to talk about the craft of writing gothic romance. Her book, The Widow of Rose House, became an instant hit with gothic romance fans because she combined beloved tropes with new ideas. All of her work is smart, sexy, funny and enchanting, and I learned a lot from our conversation. We do talk about writing sex, so you may want earbuds if you're listening near children or co-workers. You can order her books using my bookshop.org link to support the show, as well as independent bookstores nationwide. That's at bookshop.org/shop/sheworeblack. Smack and Gabi continue their discussion from the previous episode swapping opinions about recent reads, a surprising number of which we had in common. Smack soaks in the nostalgia of a formative book of tactile fairy tale retellings that took her on a profound journey of self-discovery. Gabi delights in a cozy speculative historical haunted house mystery/romance about a scandalous widow and a sweet family of mad scientists. We talk about our individual challenges and approaches to reading on planes and stress out about (or are pleasantly surprised by) contemporary romances. Along the way we learn the difference between blackmail and extortion, celebrate delightful surprise glow-in-the-dark covers (with whales!), and covet cat-sized pet dragons (who wouldn't?). Main books discussed include: The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold by Francesca Lia Block Spell on Wheels by Kate Leth, Megan Levens (Illustrator), Marissa Louise (Colorist) The Widow of Rose House by Diana Biller Night Shine by Tessa Gratton If the Shoe Fits (Meant to Be #1) by Julie Murphy Among Thieves by M.J. CONTENT WARNING: Violence against minors. In a dark cave somewhere on the Faroe Islands, the investigators from the Rose House discover the remnants of a dark and disturbing ritual.
On a quiet hillside, deep in the Pleasant Valley, a little inconspicuous white and green house with it's white picket fence sits nestled against a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop. The history that the little house harbors is chilling... a "mentally deficient" young woman, possible familial abuse, unrequited love, a triple homicide in the name of love, three more attempted murders, and hauntings notable enough to garner international attention. Today, I've invited author Wendy Dalrymple back to the show for a Buddy Read on the popular gothic romance novel, “The Widow of Rose House” by Diana Biller. I wanted to round out the Valentine's episodes with a closer look at a book known for being spooky as well as a proper romance. Since Wendy writes gothic romance, including the novella “The Ghost and Mr. Moore,” I thought she would be the perfect person to buddy read this one with me. I will link to both this book and Wendy's in the show notes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sheworeblack/message

Come hear an Ohio folktale that springs forth from true crime history. The spirits of those murdered, and the murderess herself, is said to linger in this unassuming, modest farmhouse. It still stands in a state park. You can walk up to the stoop for yourself and peek in the windows. Perhaps the souls of those lost there yearn to have their story heard. In 1896, Ceely Rose was a developmentally disabled young woman. While her mind was underdeveloped, her heart craved the love of a romantic partner. She wanted a family of her own, just as others her age were acquiring. She would have it at any cost. Come hear the tales of one writer, Mr. Mark Sebastian Jordan, and his nearly lifelong interest in the story. It inspired him to write a play and book on the subject. It's inspired countless others to ponder the meaning of this history, and the hauntings which continue, 125 years later. It seems Ceely is still looking for love… If you enjoy this episode, please rate, review and subscribe to Ohio Folklore on your chosen podcast platform. Here are the things to expect in this episode:Recovery is not just about staying sober. It's about creating a life that you don't want to run away from.Developing a relationship with yourself as the first step to healing and staying sober.A lot of people tend to indulge in negative self-talk. Why?The importance of having a support system when you're struggling. Connection is the opposite of addiction! And much more! ~ About Michelle: Mine was a long and painful journey that took me 18 years of hurting my husband, children, family, friends, and myself. The first time I went to treatment was in 2013. However, upon leaving treatment, I was strongly encouraged to find residence in a sober living community. Because I had children, I refused. I thought that there was no way I could stay away from my children for another month let alone three or six. I stayed sober for three (3) months. The second time I left treatment was in May, 2016 and when my 28 days of treatment were completed, I was willing to do whatever it took. I asked for recommendations on sober living homes. The outpatient coordinator helped me to find a sober home. The sober home that I attended provided me with a safe and supportive environment, with like minded people, who were on the same path. I was also able to visit my husband and children. I would then return to the comfort and safety of the sober home. My sober home peers were invaluable to me, because they understood what my other friends could not. The sober living home and my peers gave me the support, the understanding, and the safe haven I needed to successfully create a better life. My experience in Sober Living was integral to my successful and continued recovery.Aware that there were no sober living options in Eau Claire, I knew that I needed to create a sober living community for others seeking recovery. In July of 2020 Eau Claire Sober Living was born, which will start with a women's home—The Rose House. A men's home—The Art House—is scheduled to open in June of 2021. VIBE CHECK – We're feeling weird about being 1 year into the pandemic. But Danielle and her family watched The Lion King (1994, of course) and Gwen watched Coming 2 America and made Molly Yeh's Spiced Tomato ABCs (which is basically Spaghetti-Os)! * READING SLUMPS – Like so many other readers, we've gone through a reading slump during the pandemic, and we may still be in one... but we have some ideas about why and what to do about it. Gwen suggests scheduling time to read and sticking to it and be ready to work up to reading for longer and longer periods of time. She also suggests reading books of TV/Movies that have been adapted that you've already watched (GENIUS!). For example, she is thinking about rereading the Bridgerton book series... Danielle is already doing this! Also, they still make movie tie-in books!! Danielle suggests reading Harlequin Desire Category Romances, including (but not limited to) the Blackout Billionaires series by Naima Simone, the Bourbon Brothers series by Reese Ryan, as well as Karen Booth and Jules Bennett. Don't sleep in graphic novels: Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson Also, give rereading a try: The Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole, The Brown Sisters by Talia Hibbert, Sometimes in Love series by Melonie Johnson, The Widow of Rose House by Diana Biller, The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley, Wicked by Gregory McGuire * THE INTIMACY EXPERIMENT by Rosie Danan is in stores on April 6th, 2021! Rosie recommended books! Dalliance and Devotion by Felicia Grossman, Recommended for You by Laura Silverman, and The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon What's bringing Rosie joy? Watching competitive reality TV! Survivor, The Challenge, and Are You the One. * GOALS/WHAT'S BRINGING US COMFORT – Gwen started using the Morning Pages App and this has helped her meet her writing goals. The podcast Natch Beaut is a lot of fun! After listening to a recent episode, Gwen was inspired to start a daily gratitude practice. Gwen is looking forward to Spring TV, including the new season of Top Chef and Marriage or Mortgage. Danielle attempted to clean her desk, but it's really just organized chaos at this point. She also binged WandaVision last weekend and received her first book rec from her daughter: a My Little Pony Graphic Novel!

Episode Highlights Diana's Journey Diana went to law school at Cornell. She observes that many writers went to law school because it's a good way to monetize their writing skills. Law school was an amazing experience for her. During her second year of law school, Diana realized that she didn't have the talent to be a lawyer. How Diana Started Taking Her Writing Seriously Tim, Diana's husband, got his dream job in Seattle. This event pushed her to take her writing more seriously. This period was also when she made a writing buddy. Diana's first two books were terrible. But she wrote them, set them aside, and moved on to write the next thing. Diana's third book got published in 2017. The Importance of Support Diana shares that she had a period where she did freelance writing in addition to writing her novel. Her husband told her to take six months off to focus on her writing properly. Having a successful art career involves receiving support from your family or spouse. Diana admits that without this kind of support, her book would have taken many more years to finish. The Beauty of the Romance Genre Romance novels are about healing, hope, and joy. These types of novels also have deep character work, and so you get to know characters well. Listen to the full episode to know why Diana's enjoyed My Beautiful Enemy and Get a Life, Chloe Brown. The Standards of Traditional Publishing Traditional publishing is slow. It's common to see books on shelves that have been written two to three years ago. Diana's book was signed in 2017, but it didn't get out until 2019. However, a huge benefit of traditional publishing is the presence of a professional team. In some ways, you will lose autonomy. The writer isn't the only one making decisions. Remember that the team's job is to market and sell your book. How to Know if Your Work is Ready to be Queried You need to learn to be your quality monitor. If you think a work is good, then it doesn't matter what others think about it. Be grounded in awareness of your own work. Diana shares that she sent queries to people that she wanted to work with. Six months later, Diana received an email from an agent. Diana's Writing Process As an active author, Diana is juggling multiple projects. Diana makes use of candle scents to switch to different feelings. She also uses music depending on the emotion that she's going for. Because Diana does historical romance, she researches a lot. She also likes to go to the place to get a feeling of the environment. Curious about Diana's upcoming book? She gives a little sneak peek in the full episode. Diana's Love for Writing Writing isn't actively joyous for Diana. But she's most herself, and she feels whole, when she's writing. For her, this is love. Some Writing Practices Rather than word count goals, Diana shares that she prefers having time goals. She concentrates for 25 minutes then takes a break. Remember to take a break and let your mind rest from intensive work. Diana does a couple of hours of intense concentration. She then switches to other activities such as exercising. On the Most Challenging Thing Diana shares that the most challenging thing is that you're writing alone. With this comes a lot of accountability. Choose to create for yourself and put yourself out in the world. Your first draft will be terrible, but it needs to be terrible in a way that's true to you. Diana's Non-Negotiables Diana needs physical space. Having even just a corner that is solely for yourself is important for creative work. Diana's Advice You are the first person there for yourself. Give yourself love and empathy. We often try to look for love in others, but we need to learn to give ourselves love as well. Community and relationships are important; lean on them when you need them. But remember that you can help yourself too. 5 Powerful Quotes from the Episode “I love romance novels because they are about healing, pretty much always they are about healing, hope, and finding joy. They also are for me pretty much as a genre that consistently delivers really deep character work.” “I believe that one of the most important things that you can do for creative work is to really develop your own internal meter, know what you think is good. And if you think it is good, then it doesn't really matter what other people think.” “What I know so surely is that when I'm not writing, I don't feel whole. I don't feel like my best self, like my fullest self. So when I have that practice of sitting down every day and working, that is when I am most Diana. I think that is love. It's just love. It's very deep and so integral to myself that it's hard to express easily.” “I think of it as arrogance, but in a good way. You have to say, ‘Yeah, I think what I'm saying is worth listening to.'” “When you have a problem, give yourself that love and that empathy... I think a lot of times we're looking for it from other people.” About Diana Diana Biller is the author of The Widow of Rose House, her debut novel. She also has two books set for release this 2021. A Christmas Spark comes out on May 4, while The Brightest Star in Paris comes out on October 12. Diana graduated law at Cornell University. But she has always loved reading and imagining worlds and scenarios in her head — now she makes them come to life with her books! When she's not writing, she enjoys hiking, watching and attending ballet classes, snuggling with her pets, and reading. Curious about Diana's work? You can learn more on her website.
