The Florida Truck Crash - One of Far Too Many - How Did We Get Here? A Roundtable Discussion

Voice Of GO(r)D

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2025 97:22

Voice Of GO(r)D has convened something of an emergency roundtable in the wake of this horrific tragedy in Florida last week, as much of the reporting on it that's out there is weak, inconsistent, politically motivated, and lacking in substantive context and background. This tragic incident, for those who follow this Substack, or pay close attention to the North American trucking industry, is but one of many in a long line of completely unnecessary and preventable crashes, and the causes of all of these crashes are many, but there are notable through-lines and historical context. The media, along with many online commentators, are trying to pin this on bad immigration policy, which is certainly a component, or the corruption of politicians like Gavin Newsom, which is also a factor, but this is merely to find convenient villains who are a regular feature of life in America in 2025, and to miss all of the other problems; which are, quite frankly, of far more consequence to this incident. To help describe the view of this problem in its entirety from 30,000 feet, I have invited colleagues and former guests of this show to join me in a wide ranging roundtable which tackles all of the angles of this story, to help you make more sense of it and arm yourself with accurate complaints to make to your relevant authorities.Shannon Everett is a co-founder and the public face of American Truckers United. He is, like myself, a trucker who comes from a multi-generational trucking family. Shannon now manages an Arkansas based carrier, and his group has done some incredible research into the suspicious and massive increase of CDLs being issued across America over the past 5 years. You can listen to our previous interview here, and find his very active Twitter here.Danielle Chaffin is the granddaughter and daughter of old school truckers in Tennessee, and she has been a freight broker and a social worker, but is now behind the scenes at a TMS company that helps fleets manage all of their data. She is also an independent researcher into the industry, and writes the excellent Highway Veritas substack, which I quote here often. You can find Danielle's previous appearances on this podcast here and here, and Danielle's prolific and informative Twitter here.Justin ‘Supertrucker' Martin is a former trucker and social media operator, who has held many roles behind the wheel, including hauling high security loads for the United States military, mail for the United States Postal Service, and was once the co-host of the FreightWaves podcast ‘Back The Truck Up'. You can find Justin as a guest on my show here, here, here, and here, and his meme-heavy Twitter account here. For the first time, and for those folks who prefer to watch things online, I have made the video from our roundtable available on YouTube. I'm not a fan of the video format, mostly because I don't have time to watch almost anything, but if you like an assemblage of talking heads, here you go -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5I5mxcYgJII am a few short days away from submitting the rough manuscript for this book, which will likewise describe the insourcing of unskilled and illiterate labor onto our highways, as well as many other issues of consequence during the twilight days of the last American cowboy. https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/book-project-announcement-and-a-majorAs always, questions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.com

Sunny Monday, and the team are glowing. Exciting times as this edition of The Sports Desk features Ethan Rigg, Ella Zammit and Jack Huggett in a pseudo Roundtable Discussion previewing the 2025-26 season of the English Premier League. Hear the team deep dive into the expectations of defending champions, Liverpool. Top of the table is a safe prediction, but is going back-to-back? Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea may continue be the formidable contenders and may be here to stay in the top four.Talking relegation, wilder predictions are made. How does Ethan foresee Brentford as a team that will risk relegation this season? Or how about Ella making a case for Manchester United (yes, Manchester United) fall to relegation. Elsewhere, Jack predicts Everton making some improvements. In Round 22 of the AFL, Geelong professionally get training done at the Cattery, Fremantle enter the top 4 by winning at the Adelaide Oval. Brisbane stumble at home against the Swans, the Western Bulldogs keep breathing down the Top 8's neck in an MCG epic. And the 1st placed Crows, amazingly, had to escape defeat from the 18th placed Eagles.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In late August 1979, the FBI's Brooklyn-Queens Metropolitan Resident Agency (the BQ) received a significant tip from a top-echelon informant within the Genovese crime family. This informant, known as "Bob," reported that Paul Castellano, head of the Gambino crime family, had mentioned an upcoming major meeting at Gurney's Inn in Montauk, New York. The anticipated attendees included prominent figures such as Frank "Funzi" Tieri of the Genovese family, Carmine "The Snake" Persico of the Colombo family, and Tampa's organized crime leader, Santo Trafficante Jr. Recognizing the potential significance of this gathering—the most consequential since the 1957 Apalachin summit—the FBI swiftly mobilized. Agents, including undercover operatives, were dispatched to Gurney's Inn, posing as tourists to monitor arrivals and activities. Specialized personnel were prepared to install surveillance equipment to capture conversations during the meeting. Despite the extensive preparations, the anticipated meeting never occurred. The reasons remain uncertain; possibilities include the informant providing inaccurate information, the mobsters altering their plans, or suspicions about increased surveillance leading to a change in venue. This outcome was reminiscent of the 1957 Apalachin meeting, where law enforcement's unexpected presence led to the mobsters' dispersal. While the immediate operation at Gurney's Inn did not yield the expected results, it underscored the FBI's evolving strategies in combating organized crime. The bureau's readiness to deploy advanced surveillance techniques and coordinate large-scale operations marked a shift towards more proactive and sophisticated approaches. This evolution contributed to significant successes in subsequent years, including the Mafia Commission Trial of 1986 and the conviction of John Gotti in 1992. This episode about the FBI's almost-successful attempt to bug a major mob meeting at Gurney's Inn illustrates the challenges law enforcement faced in infiltrating organized crime and highlights the pivotal role such operations played in modernizing the FBI's methodologies. Joining us in this episode, we have: Daniel Edward Rosen, a staff reporter from the New York Sun, whose work has appeared in Esquire, the New York Observer, City Journal, New York Magazine, and the New York Times. See his original article: https://www.nysun.com/article/how-the-fbis-mad-dash-to-wiretap-the-mob-at-a-montauk-hotel-nearly-50-years-ago-helped-modernize-todays-agencyFrank DiMatteo joins us to provide color commentary based upon his experiences growing up embedded in one of the most infamous mob crews in the history of the American Cosa Nostra. Frank is the son of Ricky DiMatteo, a member of the legendary Gallo Crew of the Colombo Crime Family in New York City. He is also an author of several books in his own right including Growing Up Mafia, Mafia Hit Man, Lord High Executioner, The Cigar, Carmine the Snake, Red Hook, as well as the publisher of Mob Candy.

April 18, 2025 - Season 15, Episode 121 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to discussing the long interview that free agent QB Aaron Rodgers had on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday. The Rodgers interview was nearly 40 minutes in length, and it provided a lot of talking points for us to discuss. Alex and I also go over our main takeaways that seemed useful stemming from that Thursday interview. We also discuss the stance the steelers should have with Rodgers at this point when it comes to a possible time frame they need his decision by. After discussing Rodgers to open the show we move on to our annual pre-draft roundtable discussion with several contributors of the site. The roundtable this year includes Joe Clark, Ross McCorkle, Josh Carney, Jonathan Heitritter, Nate Kosko, Jake Brockhoff, and Steven Pavelka all joining the show to discuss several 2025 draft prospects. We address several main position groups the Steelers are likely to have the most interest in this year. We name several late round draft sleeper prospects in this show, and we get the members of the roundtable to each name their top few choices to be the steelers first-round selection this year as well. This 117-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap as well. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
