After taking a closer look at what's going on in Sunderland, this week the Northern Agenda podcast heads 130 miles south west over the Northern Pennines to the Lancashire city of Preston. Rob Parsons reports from the This Is The North Convention 2023, organised by the People's Powerhouse, a movement that aims to bring people of the North together to discuss, explore, share and celebrate all the amazing grassroots organisations in the North. The venue for the two-day conference is the Masonic Hall in Preston, a building which dates back to the 1830s and where visitors can see wood-panelled rooms and leather-bound chairs. It's easy to imagine the great and good of Lancashire society over the years debating the big topics of the day. But the members of the local freemasons may not have been totally onboard with some of the topics on the agenda this week, as the theme is 'A Radical North – The People Powered future Starts Here'. And even the location in Preston is a contrast to the venue for the conference last year, central Manchester, where skyscrapers are leaping up in all directions and the city's leaders have enthusiastically embraced big business. The political leadership here in Preston is plotting a very different course. We'll hear from - Edna Robinson, chair of the People's Powerhouse - Matthew Brown, Labour leader of Preston council - Adrian Murrell and Dan Bryant from Windrush Initiatives, an organisation devoted to tackling the disparities Black people face in Preston and further afield - Debbie Abrahams, Labour MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, on her new short film 'The Unequal Pandemic' Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Eyes & Teeth The Worlds Greatest Variety Show, Season 15 edition 6 with the one and only Harry Hill.Harry is about to embark on a new UK Tour with his new musical Tony Blair the Rock Opera. So today we catch up and talk about his work as a stand up comedian, musical producer, admirer of ventriloquists and their dummies, Sean Lock and much more. Harry's success on television brought him awards and millions of fans but it was his decision to end the TV show that made him a household name as the schedule was gruelling and besides he is now able to tour his Stand Up show, write more books, collaborate with Steve Brown on exciting projects as well as be at home with his family instead of watching 12 hours of TV dramas and soaps for little comedy nuggets. Until I read his biography FIGHT I didn't know how much hands on harry was in putting together these clips but that is the main reason he wanted more freedom after a good 10 years on ITV. My wife Nina & I loved the show so much we went along to one of the recordings to see the magic happen and he had us in hysterics as usual. One thing Harry does have as well as his successful career is that he has his charm laid back nature and I was delighted he agreed to our chat on Eyes & Teeth and its just in time to mention that the Tony Blair Rock Opera is now on sale at the Leicester Square Theatre and is on from April 15th to my 21st before going on a National Tour.Oh while I'm here my theatre Tour Ventriloquest – A Life in the Day of Arthur Lager continues April to August and can be seen in Hunstanton, Southampton, Hastings, Bungay Norfolk, Saddleworth, Verwood Dorset, Eastbourne, Chelmsford, Stafford, Axminster, Shanklin IOW, Ivybridge, Bromyard midlands, Haverhill Suffolk, Paighton and Ilfracombe in DEVON.Got to www.thestevehewlettshow.com for dates. Now its time for a special edition of Eyes & Teeth with Harry Hill

In this episode, Jeannette talks to the journalist, author, and leading expert on British regional national affairs - Brian Groom. He shares what led him to become a journalist and how he progressed his career and ended up as the assistant editor and the political editor for The Financial Times.   They discuss how he overcame imposter syndrome and educated himself so that he could understand and report on several different sectors. This episode provides a fascinating insight into how the UK paper industry and the FT used to work. They talk about how media has changed in the UK and where it is likely to go in the future. Brian also provides an insight into his book - Northerners: A History from the Ice Age to the Present Day and shares the process he used to write it.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Staying neutral helps you to keep an open mind and see more of the picture. Don´t let people label you and put you in a box. You don't want to be restricted like that.  If someone is blanking you, learn how to reach them. Brian explains how he did this with Peter Mandelson and managed to build a good working relationship with him. Recognise the fact that people have multi-layered identities. Don´t become obsessed with data. It really is all about people. Regional newspapers have had a boost recently. Brian explains why in the podcast. Our democracies have become very fragile, partly because of social media. Break big tasks down into manageable chunks and set a time target for each part. Everyone suffers setbacks. Often, that is where the best opportunities come from. Help others on the way up.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I tried to keep the politics of mine well out of it. ´ ‘Local press ...has had a boost. People looked to their local papers for trusted coverage of the pandemic' ‘There´s always an opportunity in any adversity.'   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Have you ever felt like you weren't qualified enough to be treating the animal standing in front of you? You are not alone.  Join me as I chat with Dr. Katie Ford about her experiences with imposter syndrome and why they led her to dive deep into  this topic. She is a wealth of information and I cannot thank her enough for sharing what she's learned along her journey....About Dr. FordMy name is Katie, I live in beautiful Saddleworth just outside Manchester, UK. I'm a happy space-nerd, obsessed with Gary Vaynerchuk and I love racoons. Getting outside walking makes my heart glow, as does spending time with my partner and our two ridiculously fluffy cats. I love the gym, learning mountain biking, fitness and have done the odd mud run. I'm obsessed with gratitude, its anecdotal and more scientifically proven effects. I come up with new and crazy plans on the regular, and I am fascinated with human potential.I'm passionate about positive mindset techniques and helping others with them too; I trained as a coach, broadband consciousness trainer & cognitive behaviour therapy. I've also been mentored and still am, by one of Bob Proctor's top mindset coaches in the world, who I'm lucky to call a good friend. I'm also a vet, who works in small animal practice and has an advanced certificate in internal medicine, I've been lucky to be doing this for nine years now. ⁣Five years ago, this would have been a very different introduction. I would have started with "my name is Katie, and I'm a vet." All of my worth was on my job title; this was a double-edged sword. The profession is amazing, but I left all my hobbies behind. I became overworked (on my own terms), feeling like a fraud for any achievement and constantly chasing happiness. I put myself under more stress than clients, colleagues or patients ever did; I chased perfection constantly, staying longer and longer to disaster prevent. My brain looked for things that went wrong, and tortured me, however minuscule they appeared externally. It was mentally and physically unsustainable. I had achievements galore, everything external that I could want... but internally, I was in a civil war. I felt like one person went and achieved all this stuff externally, and then internally, I felt like a worthless fraud.⁣The good news was that through lots of methods, help from many sources, harnessing my thoughts, and recognising my personal value...my life is totally transformed. I've since started multiple businesses of my own & grown a social media following of over 12,000. You'll also find me speaking about imposter syndrome on many stages from WellVet to the Global Vet Career Summit, a myriad of podcasts, and recently keynote speaker at BVNA. In 2020, I published a book called "To an amazing vet", with versions for vet nurses and receptionists available too.I feel lucky every day to know the content that I post about, hence I constantly try to share what I have learned, and why I trained in these methods myself. I love to help people to reconnect with themselves, the real them, and that's not always who we think that we are. King of The Slums special with Charles Keigher in conversation with David Eastaugh King of the Slums formed in Manchester, England, by writer Charley Keigher aka Charlie Keighera (vocals, guitar) and Sarah Curtis (electric violin), initially as Slum Cathedral User. Joined by bassist John Eccles in early 1985, they recorded a demo tape at Crimson Studios in Urmston, Manchester with the help of a drummer who left the band soon after. The band took up its image of Kings of the slums incorporating a plastic dustbin and a tambourine replacing the drums which added to their 'Slums' authenticity when playing live. They won Muze magazine's Band of the Year competition winning a recording session at a studio in Gorton Manchester producing a second demo tape. Their third demo tape came soon after at a recording studio in Upper Mill high up in the Saddleworth moors. During the second and third demo tape recordings the group made its vinyl recording debut with the "Spider Psychiatry" single in 1986 on a small independent label SLR Records. During this time they gigged at various Manchester venues as a three piece with their now trade mark dustbin drum and homemade stage. The single, reviewed by Melody Maker, never made any significant sales. In mid 1987 Eccles left the band. Sarah Curtis had studied violin at the Royal Northern College of Music, but dropped out before finishing her studies. Further releases followed in 1988 and 1989 on the Play Hard label, now with bassist Jon Chandler and drummer Ged O'Brien (who replaced a succession of drummers), most of which were collected on the album Barbarous English Fayre (1989). The band also recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show in 1988. An incendiary live performance of "Fanciable Headcase", shown on the influential Snub TV television programme, earned the band national exposure, and helped to push their EPs up the independent chart, "Bombs Away on Harpurhey" reaching No. 8.

In the first ruling of its kind for 99 years, the former Immigration Minister and Labour MP, Phil Woolas was last month stripped of his Oldham East and Saddleworth seat. He was found guilty by a special election court of having knowingly lied about his Liberal Democrat opponent, Elwyn Watkins. Mr Woolas has also been accused of exploiting racial tensions in an area which saw riots in the run up to the General Election in 2001. The Report investigates what really went on during the campaign and looks at the role of the politics of race in this most tightly fought of contests. And reporter Simon Cox asks how unique the circumstances of the Oldham East election were. Phil Woolas was found guilty of making claims about his opponent's personal character or conduct that he knew to be untrue. But candidates can use many other tricks to deceive voters that are within the rules. The Report asks whether the law that was used to strip the former Oldham East MP of his seat has kept up with the reality of modern electioneering.
