John began playing drums at the age of 5 in Oakland California. Oakland proved to be a perfect incubator for John as he thrived playing in many of the school, community, rock, jazz, and funk bands in the area. This experience gave John a diverse background that continues to serve him well today. Early in his career, John was playing in local bands opening for such diverse acts as George Benson, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who (two North American tours), and many more. John's reputation quickly grew and he found himself playing with San Francisco/Oakland bay area legends including Joshua Redman, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), and Miles Davis band alumni Barry Finnerty, Garth Webber, and Benny Rietveld. John continued to cast his net as wide as possible. He began getting calls from New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New Orleans to audition with such artists as Pee Wee Ellis, Stephen Jenkins (Third Eye Blind), Cake, and many more. These experiences gave John national exposure which has led to local, touring, and/or studio dates with Josh Groban, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Pat Benatar, Steve Miller, Booker T., Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Oz Noy and many more. John has played multiple productions of Hamilton in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Puerto Rico and tours and records with Carl Verheyen. In this episode, John talks about: The resume he amassed in the Bay Area before moving to LA Thinking of different theatre shows as different “dialects” His experience of playing multiple productions of Hamilton Getting called out by his musical director for going on auto pilot The process of constant refinement over the course of a show The broader palate he gets to use with Carl Verheyen

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) and U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced the bipartisan “Ferry Service Expansion Act” with Representatives Rick Larsen (D-WA02), Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-AS), Albio Sires (D-NJ08), Alan S. Lowenthal (D-CA42), Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (D-MP), Barbara Lee (D-CA13), Jared Huffman (D-CA02), James R. Langevin (D-RI02), Eric Swalwell (D-CA15), Derek Kilmer (D-WA06), Suzan K. DelBene (D-WA01), and Julia Brownley (CA-26) as original cosponsors. Congressman Garamendi is a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Senator Murray is the Assistant Democratic Leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus and sponsored landmark ferry legislation in the 112th, 111th, 109th, and 108th Congresses. “With rising sea levels due to man-made climate change and increasing congestion on our bridges, I strongly support expanding ferry service across the Bay Area. I am thrilled to partner with Senator Murray from Washington State on this much-needed legislation to improve ferry service for commuters and visitors alike. Our ‘Ferry Service Expansion Act' would provide more federal funding to help retrofit diesel WETA ferries to reduce emissions and eventually replace the entire Bay Area fleet with zero-emission ferries built by skilled American workers,” said Congressman Garamendi. Specifically, the “Ferry Service Expansion Act” would: Increase funding for both the Federal Highway Administration's formula and the Federal Transit Administration's competitive grant programs to the levels requested by the Public Ferry Coalition. Provide $640 million total from fiscal years 2023 to 2026 in formula grants from the Federal Highway Administration's Ferry Boats and Ferry Terminal Facilities Formula Program, a $180 million increase over current law. Provide $450 million total from fiscal years 2023 to 2026 in competitive grant programs from the Federal Transit Administration's Passenger Ferry Grant Program, a $300 million increase over current law. Provide a one-time $1.25 billion investment in federal transit funding for passenger ferries serving urbanized areas like San Francisco-Oakland and Seattle. Allow States to use their federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) for hovercraft ferry projects. Under current law, only “watercraft” ferry projects are available, not hovercrafts performing the exact same overwater transit service. In December 2020, the Bay Area Council released a feasibility study for employing hovercraft to provide ferry service in the South Bay. Make all Census Bureau-designated rural areas nationwide eligible for Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program established under 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (Public Law 117–58). Make the 85% federal cost share permanent for the replacement or retrofit of diesel-powered ferries that substantially reduce emissions. Under current law, this more generous federal cost share will end after fiscal year 2025. Normal cost share if 80% for toll roads, bridge, tunnels, and ferry projects. Apply “Buy American” and Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements to the two newly authorized ferry grant programs established under the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Make privately operated passenger ferries eligible to register Capital Construction Funds with the Maritime Administration (MARAD), which allow vessel operators to forgo paying federal business taxes on such vessels provided all that forgone tax payment is reinvested in constructing new US-flagged vessels in American shipyards. Under current law, only cargo vessels and commercial fishing boats are eligible for this special tax exemption. National Endorsements: Public Ferry Coalition; Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association; International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots; Maritime Institute for Research and Industrial Development (MIRAID); Passenger Vessel Association Regional Endorsements: San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority; Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific; Red and White Fleet – San Francisco Cruises; Delaware River & Bay Authority; Washington State Ferries; (San Francisco) Bay Area Council The full text of the “Ferry Service Expansion Act” is available here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sean McAllister - The Successful Psilocybin Mushroom Decriminalization Initiative in Denver

Download In this episode, Joe records with Sean McAllister, an attorney who helped advise Decriminalize Denver. During this special, extra episode, Sean helps us understand the language in the recent bill for Mushroom Decriminalization in Denver, CO. 3 Key Points: Recently, Psilocybin Mushroom Decriminalization passed on the ballot in Denver, CO. Psilocybin mushrooms have not been made legal, they have simply been decriminalized. This means that Denver has the lowest law enforcement priority around psilocybin and that no money can be used to criminalize this behavior. Decriminalization of Psilocybin in Denver is a big step toward changing the stigma around psychedelics. But we need to be careful, decriminalization is just a tiny step in the right direction and we need to be respectful and responsible with this initiative. Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on iTunes Share us with your friends – favorite podcast, etc Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. Navigating Psychedelics Trip Journal                                               Integration Workbook               Show Notes On May 8th, the city of Denver, Colorado voted yes on I-301, which decriminalizes the possession and use of Psilocybin-containing mushrooms. The official results will be certified on May 16th. As of May 9th - the unofficial results are - yes (50.6%) and no (49.4%).  I-301 decriminalizes adult (21 years or older) possession and use of Psilocybin mushrooms - making these offenses the lowest priority for law enforcement. This initiative also prohibits law enforcement to spend money and resources enforcing arresting adults with possession of mushrooms.  Sean’s Role in the Mushroom Decriminalization in Denver, CO Sean is an Attorney with McAllister Garfield Law Firm in Denver He has done a lot with cannabis law since 2005 He heard about the Mushroom Decriminalization campaign and began working with them His role started in January to help the team understand what it would look like if the bill passed and his role definitely continues going forward now that it has passed What the Vote Means “Decriminalize” means just that Psilocybin mushrooms have not been made legal, they have simply been decriminalized “You should never be arrested for putting something in your body that grows naturally in nature.” - Sean This means that Denver has a lowest law enforcement priority around Psilocybin Its not legal, it's not regulated This bill means that a person cannot be imprisoned for possession and cultivation for personal possession amounts The city is not supposed to spend any money to criminalize this behavior You can grow them to eat them yourself, but you can't grow them to sell them This also doesn't mean that groups can host events and ‘give out’ mushrooms as a gift in return for donation, this is not good behavior for this initiative This initiative is simply a first step at looking at mushrooms in a better light and reducing the stigma For the benefit of this bill passing, we have to be careful about amounts, the smaller the amount of mushrooms the better There isn't an amount listed in the bill to distinguish between personal use and intent to sell The city has to establish a review commission What this commission is supposed to do is track the public safety impact, use, criminal justice impact, etc We hope and guess that Psilocybin will not impact any of these, just like how Marijuana did not impact anything for the bad when it was decriminalized Once the city sees the results, they won't have so much stigma about it, and Denver will lead the way for the state and the rest of the nation for sensible drug policy Political Pushback The typical response was “we already legalized marijuana, let’s not jump to something else” Sean thinks this gives Denver an amazing reputation, that it understands therapeutic ability and research and no tolerance for the drug war “We need a system that addresses public safety concerns but maintains as much personal liberty as possible on these topics” - Shane Other Initiatives Sean is a part of Chacruna, based in San Francisco Oakland is attempting to Decriminalize Nature, which by nature means all naturally occurring substances They aren't on a ballot, they are looking to convince city council to agree with it and accept it California attempted to raise signatures to be on the ballot in the 2018 election but it failed to get on the ballot Oregon is now collecting signatures to get on the ballot at the state level in 2020 Oregon's model is for medicalization, Sean expresses concern for a purely medical model Between big pharma and quiet equity firms, they want to monetize on psychedelics like they did with marijuana, and that's what we risk with medicalization Psychedelic Liberty Summit in 2020 in the Bay Area will be to talk about the rights and wrongs around psychedelic initiatives Final Thoughts Sean mentions a possible system that revolves around a licensing structure Similar to how we get a drivers license; we practice, we take tests, etc. For psychedelics, we would need to learn the effects, harm reduction techniques, take tests to verify our knowledge, etc and receive a license that allows us to use psychedelics freely If we abuse psychedelics and use them improperly, then we would get our license taken away, suspended, etc. Overall, after this initiative passing, we have to be careful we don't ruin this victory with poor behavior Let’s just do what we're doing respectfully, responsibly, and to ourselves Links https://mcallistergarfield.com/ https://chacruna.net/council-for-the-protection-of-sacred-plants/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/attyseanmcallister/ About Sean McAllister Sean T. @milkplant Welcome back to the Bomphcast series. We've been on a hiatus recently as we here at the podcast have been traveling around Europe. Across a period of several months, we've soaked up the sights and especially the sounds of Europe and had an unforgettable experience. Tillman is now basing himself out of Berlin which is incredibly exciting so I (Fergus) wish all the best for his en devours over there and we hope to bring you some fresh mixes coming out of the covered techno city itself. I however back in Melbourne and therefore we're ramping things at Bomphcast back up again. For our 54th edition of the podcast, we have american producer, DJ and label owner Milkplant in the mix with a no compromise techno session. Milkplant is the alias of Justin Pennell Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin; he now resides in the San Francisco/Oakland area. With over 25 years combined DJ and production experience and 7 years experience of running his 0-1 label with close friend Soan, Milkplant is no stranger to the dark and thumping style of techno that he represents. We hope you enjoy his offering to the Bomphcast series. Many thanks to Justin for putting in the time to record this mix. Be sure to check out the Bomhpcast website for links to Milkplants social media network. www.bomphcast.com/project/milkplant-054/

The San Francisco-Oakland area had baseball fever. Both of their teams -- the Giants and the Athletics respectively -- would go up against one another in Game Three of the "Battle of the Bay" World Series. People across the country tuned in at 5:00 PM local time to watch the pre-game with announcers Al Michaels and Tim McCarver. But four minutes later, the video and audio would both abruptly cut out. Then Al Michaels' voice could be heard saying something which shocked the audience: "Tell you what, I think we're having an earth--"

Herman Wallace, diagnosed with liver cancer is in hospice at Gabriel Hunt Prison in Lousiana. A federal judge reversed his case and had him released from custody Tuesday, however, the state DA appealed the order. He was released this evening. Robert King, our guest today, and present at the prison visiting Herman with Albert Woodfox, the other member of Angola 3, when the order was issued, compared the DA's refusal to let Herman go, to the civil war between the North and the South. In solitary confinement for over 40 years for their political beliefs, the A3 case is an example of judicial babysteps in cases involving poliical prisoners. Marina Drummer and Mwalimu Johnsonwill join Robert H. King to talk about Herman, the case, which includes Albert Woodfox, and breaking news about the federal court decision yesterday. Visit angola3.org  We close with an interview with Jeff Hull who speaks about his new film, THE INSTITUTE, dir. Spencer McCall, which chronicles the Jejune Institute, a mind-bending San Francisco phenomenon where 10,000 people became "inducted" without ever quite realizing what they'd signed up for. Counter-culture without the risk, the team at Nonchalance invited a lucky 10,000 eventual friends over to play, the game board the breath of San Francisco & Oakland combined. The joyride took players from busy corporated offices into monsuleums where the lonely made friends and the disenchanted found hope, a place where adults were encouraged to let their child out to play and they did without reigns. We speak to Jeff Hull, direcor of Nonchalance, about the film, the Institute, and what's next. Visit http://www.theinstitutemovie.com/
