Parenting in the age of social media feels tricky, doesn’t it? I’ve found that a lot of parents feel insecure when it comes to rules about social media and how to approach it. We need to talk about it more and find ways to feel confident in our parenting in general, but especially when it comes to phones and social media. That’s why I’ve invited Dr. Sarah Sarkis on to the show today to start that conversation and help us navigate these tricky waters. Dr. Sarah Sarkis is a psychologist, writer, and performance consultant with a private practice in Honolulu, Hawaii (though it won’t take you long to discover she’s a Boston girl at heart). Her integrated approach is big on science and low on BS, empowering her clients to achieve long term change and growth through an eclectic blend of psychology, neurobiology, and functional medicine. She created her blog, The Padded Room, as a virtual safe space to help people manage the jarring realities of life. There, you’ll find a soft landing for life’s harshest truths. We’ll link to that in the show notes. You can also follow her monthly essay series Shrink Rap via her work with The Flow Research Collective. I came to this podcast with fear, guilt, & sensationalism and left with hope, confidence, and direction thanks to Dr. Sarah’s insights. We talk about all things Social Media: · Who’s on social media · What kids are being exposed to · How it affects them · Risks & benefits · Parenting · Virtual citizenship · What behaviors we model for our kids · And how we can approach all of it as parents who want what’s best for our children · And hope! This isn’t a doom and gloom episode! Tune in and get more comfortable and confident with how you approach social media in your parenting. Borderline personality disorder is one of the most stigmatizing and sensational (pejoratively speaking) conditions that the mental healthcare world tries to understand and “treat”. So needless to say, if the experts are always struggling to figure out (and agree about!) its traits and disabilities, parents and families are suffering beyond belief each day caring for a loved one living with it. In another of his Shrink Rap talks with national experts, Tom introduces his listeners to Dr Anne Wake, a national expert on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and herself a longtime colleague and collaborator with DBT’s originator Dr Marsha Linehan. Like all Tom’s picks, Anne is a soothing but exacting reporter on how to understand the person suffering in their chaotic world AND this uniquely functional and successful behavior therapy. And how families can count on it for real change.

This week, Judy and Linda are absolutely delighted by episode 2 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Judy and Linda talk about the portrayal of violence in pop culture, and why the confrontation between Aera (Kim JiWon) and the asshats is more disturbing than the fights in action films. Linda finds the characters and their struggles more relatable than in other dramas. Judy is a strong believer in sarcastic "aegyo".  To see professionals sing a traditional Korean song, click here to watch a performance of "새타령" (Song of Birds). Apparently, it's from Judy's home province! If you want to hear the original singer, Lee YoungHyeon, sing "체념" (Resignation) live, click here!   Some Korean terms: 재수없는 애: [je-soo-up-neun-ae] literally "person who is unlucky (for other people"; more accurately "annoying person". 체념: [che-nyum] resignation. 창: [chang] Korean term for "song" borrowed from Chinese; Judy refers to traditional Korean singing as "창", but the correct term is "판소리" [pan-so-ri]. 흑기사: [heuk-ghi-sa] "black knight"; guy who drinks the alcohol for a girl in a drinking game.   Audio Credits: Frasier season 3, episode 2 “Shrink Rap”   Are you guys also enjoying "Fight My Way"? Each time I tell someone what my job is they are curious or they are worried. They want to know more about psychology, or how I can help them. Or they want to stay away from being analyzed. If you've ever been curious about the "mysteries of psychology" join me for Everything is Psychological.   This is the beginning of the podcast adventure. Everything is Psychological will explore the world of psychology, and how it weaves through our lives. Our experiences are shaped by our emotions and thoughts. Understanding the psychology of an event is important to a greater self-awareness and an improved functioning.  In this episode we will explore the purpose of this show, and set the table for the future of Everything is Pyschological.    There are several psychology podcasts currently available that take the thoughts in different directions. If you're a psychology lover like me check out The Psych Files, Shrink Rap, or Seattle Psychology podcasts. Their hosts bring great content to explore different aspects of the field.   Everything is Psychological is a creative exploration of how our mind forms the world around us, and how we can tap into reshaping the way we think.
