Shavuot - Episode 3 They made it.  The Hebrews led by Moses by the hand of Yahvay, the Lord, finally arrive at the Mountain of God.  Here they will receive the Ten Commandments which the Lord says is His Covenant as we read … Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. (Exo 34:27-28) Israel comes to the Mountain of God in the Sinai and there they will enter a New Covenant - nothing like this ever happened before – and become a chosen people, a holy nation, and nation of priests.  But, wait a minute, that sounds so familiar.  It reminds us of Jesus and His lifting up His cup at His Last Supper – the cup of the New Covenant.  This happens in Jerusalem.  There's more.  It so happens that the Mountain of God was Mt. Sinai as can be found in Exod. 3:1 and 3:12 and 19:1-3.  We got this.  No problem.  But then we see that God moves His mountain to a new location.  Just consider a few proof texts … Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For the law will go forth from Zion And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. (Isa 2:2-3) "I will set a sign among them and will send survivors from them to the nations: Tarshish, Put, Lud, Meshech, Tubal and Javan, to the distant coastlands that have neither heard My fame nor seen My glory. And they will declare My glory among the nations. "Then they shall bring all your brethren from all the nations as a grain offering to the LORD, on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules and on camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem," says the LORD, "just as the sons of Israel bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD. (Isa 66:19-20) And it will come about in the last days That the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains. It will be raised above the hills, And the peoples will stream to it. Many nations will come and say, "Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. (Mic 4:1-2) He moved His mountain.  It is now the Temple Mount in Jerusalem also known as Mt. Zion.  (The term Mount Zion has been used in the Hebrew Bible first for the City of David (2 Samuel 5:7, 1 Chronicles 11:5; 1 Kings 8:1, 2 Chronicles 5:2) and later for the Temple Mount, but its meaning has shifted and it is now used as the name of ancient Jerusalem's Western Hill) And, this is where the New Covenant of God is given through Yeshua HaMashiach, Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus the Christ.  On top of that we read the following … But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (1Pe 2:9) Wow.  What an amazing connection between the New Covenant at the Mountain of God Mt. Sinai and the New Covenant at the Mountain of God Mt. Zion - a Biblical name for the Temple Mount.  God is connecting these covenants.  He is not replacing the latter with the former.  They are intimately related and you can not have on New Covenant without the other.  Is there more?  You won't believe it.  This is another awesome chapter in Torah that meets the goals of this podcast series.  Here are those goals.   So come and join us in this study.  This is another awesome example that there is ONE book, ONE Bible, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, ONE God, ONE Lord, with ONE goal, Jesus!  Who is this guy, Rev. It is customary to read the first chapter of Yehezkel (Ezekiel) as the Haftarah on Shabuot, a section known as Ma'aseh Merkava – the vision of the Divine Chariot. This profound and mysterious prophecy was revealed to Yehezkel while in exile by the River Kevar in Babylon. Despite being in galut, the Shechina appeared to him, teaching us that Hashem's presence remains with us even outside the Land of Israel. The imagery in the Haftarah is highly symbolic: four-faced angels, wheels of fire, and a glowing chariot representing the heavenly realms. The four faces—human, lion, ox, and eagle—symbolize dominion over different realms of creation. Above them all sits the Divine presence, symbolizing Hashem's supremacy over all. According to the Zohar, the human face seen in the vision is that of Yaakov Avinu , whose spiritual greatness earned him a place under the Heavenly Throne. The Haftarah is read on Shabuot because the revelation at Sinai was similarly accompanied by clouds, lightning, and thunder. Just as Matan Torah revealed Hashem's glory, so too does this vision reflect a celestial dimension of His presence. Although the details are esoteric and not meant to be publicly expounded, practical lessons emerge: Angels are stationary – they do not grow spiritually. Their legs are straight and fixed, teaching us that only humans can elevate themselves spiritually through effort, Torah, and mitzvot. Shabuot is the perfect time to recommit to personal growth. Angels of judgment travel slowly , while angels of mercy travel instantly. From this, we learn to pause before reacting in anger or judgment , giving ourselves time to calm down and choose a better path. Acting with patience brings mercy into our decisions. The vision also hints that the Shechina was departing from the Beit HaMikdash, a symbolic warning that without spiritual substance, even a holy building becomes just bricks and stone. Despite the complexity of this Haftarah, the overarching message is clear: Hashem is with us in every generation, in every place—even in exile—and our mission is to grow, learn, and draw closer to Him through Torah .

(b) Since the preparations for receiving the Torah began on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, it is understood that there is a connection between Rosh Chodesh and Torah: After the moon becomes smaller and smaller and then disappears completely, Rosh Chodesh marks the birth of the new moon, and from then on the moon shines more and more with each passing day (unlike the sun, which shines constantly without change). Similarly, one's study of Torah, which is a Torah of Life, requires growth. In a plant's life, there are times when you can see it growing and producing fruit, and times when it appears frozen and doesn't grow or produce fruit, but during that time it receives new strength to produce more fruit. The Same is true of Torah: Although Hashem sometimes gives a person difficulties in Torah study, it is only so that the person will exert himself to overcome them, and thereby reach a deeper understanding. It is customary to adorn our homes and synagogues on Shabuot with flowers and greenery. This custom is recorded by the Rama (Rabbi Moshe Isserles of Cracow, 1525-1572) in his discussion of the laws of Shabout (Orah Haim 494:3). More so than on other holidays, it is appropriate on Shabuot to decorate the homes and synagogues with flowers and other vegetation, in order commemorate Matan Torah. At the time of the Revelation at Sinai, G-d warned the people not to allow their cattle to graze on the mountain ("Gam Ha'son Ve'ha'bakar Al Yir'u El Mul Ha'har Ha'hu" – Shemot 34:3), indicating that it was full of pasture. Mount Sinai is in the desert, where vegetation does not grow, but in honor of the event of Matan Torah G-d had flowers and grass grow on the mountain, and we commemorate this adorning of Mount Sinai by adorning our homes and synagogues on Shabuot. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) adds a deeper interpretation of this custom based on Kabbalistic teachings. He explains that Torah study has the effect of "Mituk Ha'dinim" – "sweetening" harsh judgments issued against a person. Even if G-d had issued a decree, Heaven forbid, against somebody, that decree can be annulled through the study of Torah. The divine Name associated with strict judgment is "Elokim," whereas the Name associated with "Mituk Ha'dinim" is "Havaya" (Y-H-V-H). When we spell out the names of the letters of these Names (e.g. the Alef of "Elokim" is spelled out, "Alef, Lamed, Peh"), the combined numerical value of the letters of "Elokim" is 300, and the combined numerical value of the letters of "Havaya" is 72. The letter representing the number 300 is "Seen," and the number 72 is represented by the letters "Ayin" (70) and "Bet" (2). The two letters of "Havaya," the Ben Ish Hai explains, surround the letter of "Elokim" to neutralize its effect, such that the letter "Seen" is placed in between the "Ayin" and "Bet." When the three letters are arranged in this fashion, they spell the word "Eseb" – "grass." Thus, we put out vegetation on Shabuot to symbolize the profound spiritual effect of our Torah study, how it has the capacity to annul harsh judgments. As we celebrate the event of Matan Torah, we remind ourselves of how valuable and precious Torah learning is, as alluded to in the "Eseb" with which we decorate the synagogue and home. Summary: It is customary to decorate homes and synagogues with vegetation on Shabuot to commemorate the vegetation that adorned Mount Sinai when the Torah was given. On a Kabbalistic level, vegetation alludes to the power of Torah study to protect us from harsh decrees.

I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2633 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we continue our exploration of the majestic Psalm 68 in the New Living Translation. We've already witnessed God as the powerful Divine Warrior, scattering His enemies and bringing joy to the godly. We've journeyed with the Israelites through the wilderness, marveling at God's leadership and provision. Now, as we reach verses 15 through 20, the psalm shifts its focus to God's chosen dwelling place, His triumphant ascension, and His ultimate power over death itself. This section brings together the historical narrative of God's dealings with Israel and a powerful preview of God's ultimate victory and the blessings He bestows upon His people. It's a passage that resonated deeply with the Israelites and holds profound meaning for us today. Let's pick up our trek in Psalm 68, reading verses 15 through 17: (Reads Psalm 68:15-17 NLT) The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains; rugged are the mountains of Bashan. Why do you look with envy, O rugged mountains, at the mountain God desired for his abode? The Lord will dwell there forever! God's chariots are tens of thousands and thousands upon thousands; the Lord is among them in the sanctuary as he was at Sinai. Guthrie Chamberlain: The psalmist begins by referencing the “mountains of Bashan.” Bashan was a region known for its imposing, majestic mountains. They were geographically significant and perhaps viewed with a sense of awe or even pride by other nations. The psalmist acknowledges their grandeur but immediately contrasts them with another mountain – the one “God desired for his abode.” This mountain is, of course, Mount Zion in Jerusalem. From an ancient Israelite perspective, Mount Zion wasn't as physically imposing as some other mountains in the region, including those in Bashan. Yet, its significance far surpassed any other peak because God had chosen it as His dwelling place. The psalmist's question, “Why do you look with envy, O rugged mountains, at the mountain God desired for his abode?” is a rhetorical one, highlighting the supreme honor and importance of Zion, not because of its natural features, but because of God's presence there. In the ancient world, the dwelling place of a deity was central to the identity and security of a people. For the Israelites, the Temple on Mount Zion represented God's tangible presence among them. It was the place where they could come to meet with Him, offer sacrifices, and seek His face. The declaration, “The Lord will dwell there forever!” underscored the permanence of God's presence in Zion, offering a sense of stability and assurance in a world of shifting powers and temporary kingdoms. It was a powerful statement of God's faithfulness to remain with His people. The psalmist then describes God's arrival at His sanctuary in Zion in magnificent terms: “God's chariots are tens of thousands and thousands upon thousands; the Lord...

The Sinai Covenant has been a focal point in Christian theology since the medieval period, Protestant and Roman Catholic alike. This is because matters of "law" were central in the theological and soteriological formulations that developed through the Middle Ages and were formalized during the Reformation period. This focus on the role of "law" in salvation and sanctification continues to this day, and not surprisingly the "Law of Moses" is a key aspect of it. But far too often the Law of Moses (the Sinai Covenant) isn't treated in its historical, Israelite and covenantal contexts, which is the goal of this consideration.

We are continuing our climb up the mountain today and learning from those moments in Bible History when Heaven and Earth collided. And today we focus on Moses and the Israelites after they escaped Egypt and returned back to Mt. Sinai as promised by God. Now, the psalmist takes us on a historical journey, recounting God's powerful leadership of Israel from their deliverance in Egypt through the wilderness and into the Promised Land. This section is rich with imagery and speaks to God's active presence and provision for His people throughout their history. Understanding this passage requires us to step back into the shoes of an ancient Israelite and appreciate the significance of the events being described. These were not just historical facts; they were foundational to their identity and their understanding of God's character. Guthrie Chamberlain: The psalmist begins by recounting God's leadership: “O God, when you led your people into battle, when you marched through the wastelands.” This isn't a passive guiding from a distance; it's an active, front-lines leadership. The image of God “marching through the wastelands” evokes the Israelites' journey through the barren and dangerous wilderness after leaving Egypt. God Himself was their leader, present with them in the pillar of cloud by day and fire by night (Exodus 13:21-22). They weren't wandering aimlessly; they were on a divine march under the direct command and presence of God. The phrase “led your people into battle” reminds us that their journey was not without conflict; they faced enemies along the way, and God fought for them. The “Interlude” again gives us a moment to pause and consider the weight of God's direct leadership in such challenging circumstances. When God marched, the earth responded: “the earth trembled, and the heavens poured down rain before God, the God of Sinai.” This powerful imagery likely refers back to the dramatic events at Mount Sinai, where God descended to give the Ten Commandments (Exodus 19). The earth quaked, there was thunder and lightning, and thick clouds. The “heavens poured down rain” might be part of this fearful meteorological display accompanying God's presence, or it could also anticipate God's provision in the wilderness. GOLDEN GODS Exodus 32 Unveils the tragic anatomy of idolatry: Only pure intent towards God can wait on God. If God be not our sole desire we will settle for something else, something less. Even something we claim to be Him. Aaron made a God from his own hands and presented it as Yaweh. They eat at the table of the Lord and then rise up to sin against Him. God has every right to destroy them Moses, as a type of Christ, intercedes for mercy even placing himself in their judgment. When confronted Aaron made little of his evil and excused it with a lie. Moses with holy jealousy burned the idol and cast it upon the waters. This chapter is a divine photograph of the kind of rebellion in our natural human hearts. We must remember that these are not pagans but pilgrims. These are God's people. They heard the thunder of God. They saw the smoke of Sinai. They tasted the manna of heaven—They had passed through the sea on dry ground. They saw Pharaoh drown. They stood under the pillar of fire by night and cloud by day. They know His presence and power. Even still, they made an idol of our own hands.  Waiting has a way of exposing the idols in their hearts. Their idolatry did not spring from ignorance, but from impatience. Only pure intent towards God will refuse to settle for anything that is not exactly Him.  And thus, the human heart is  revealed. And the sad truth remains— man would rather have a visible idol than an invisible God. Something we can control. Something that serves our interest. Something that we shape from our own substance. Behold Aaron, yielding to their desires, melting their gold and forged a god!  O tragic sight—the hands once anointed for the tabernacle, now fashioning an idol image! Aaron defended his spinelessness -  “I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.” He shifted the blame suggesting that idolatry is something uninvited, and innocent.  So often our rebellious heart seek to disguise itself in the garments of accident. So as not not take the full credit for out revolt. Can you believe that they named this idol Yaweh? Even today, men create their own way and call it Yaweh. Delirium!  Oh the evil of the human heart when it ceases to bow before the living God. The human heart, if it be not set upon God for God alone, will always forge a substitute. So often we settle for religion in place of relationship, we perform services that ignore the Savior. It is important to note that the golden calf is not merely an object—it is a theology: a God we can touch, manage, control. A god made by the manipulation of man for man.  A religion without the presence of God. Without the voice of God.    May we read and tremble. For this story is not an ancient Israel problem; it is alive in every age. John Calvin is famous for saying,  “heart is an idol-factory.” I like to say “The unsatisfied heart is an idol factory.” We learn from this instant that idolatry often begins when we are no longer aware of God's presence. When the soul is distracted from God's presence, it is tempted to shape a counterfeit—sometimes of gold.  When the soul wants something more than God it will not wait for Him.  It will recreate Him and move on without His presence and voice. In these days the idol takes the form of carnal desires, worldly ambitions, material possessions, success in ministry, self-absorption. But, while the people danced, led and defiled, Moses prayed. He pleaded with the Lord, arguing not with sentiment but covenant: “Why should the Egyptians say…?” “Remember Abraham…!” He speaks to men for God, but also to God for men. And herein we find a the cream of the chapter—a sacred shadow of Christ. Jesus has stood in the gap for us. He is our great intercessor. Moses prays “Blot me out rather than blot them out.” The echo of Calvary in that cry! Jesus is the final mediator who would come, not only to plead, to bear the wrath, and to restore a covenant broken by rebellion. Oh, that we would see our modern idols for what they are! They are not golden calves, but they are equally God-eclipsing. Some bow to the shrine of platform and ministry; others adore the opinions of men or the pleasures of the world. Even sound doctrine, when divorced from love and presence, is a lifeless image. Oh the great danger of—orthodoxy without intimacy! Paul the Apostle warns us in 1 Corinthians 10 that “these things happened as examples for us,” and that “we must not be idolaters as some of them were.” He does not speak to pagans, but to believers! To those who “ate the same spiritual meat” and “drank of the spiritual Rock.” He says, “let him who thinks he stands take heed, lest he fall.”And there is something more dreadful still - some early Jewish scholars believed that golden calf may have moved—animated by demonic power, or dark enchantment. Whether fable or fact, the truth remains: We empower what we adore. What we give our hearts to will rule us. And what we desire more God will one day mock us. Let us hold fast to the invisible, and refuse the golden glitter of lesser gods. Let us hate that which we make for ourselves and receive only Him sent from above. Let us, like Moses, dwell in the cloud, face to face with God, even when everyone else dances in self gratification. Let us, like Christ, be found interceding for the guilty, rather than condemning with stones. Let us cast down our idols!  Let not our ministry, our reputation, our theology, our pleasures, nor our own wills rise up to take His place. May we grind each competitor to powder and scatter them on the waters. For what we have made with our hands could never satisfy like He who made us with His hands. I once had a dream in which my eyes were fixed upon the lovely Lamb of God.  My heart was full of joy and peace.  I cannot describe the bliss I felt in looking at Him.  When I removed my eyes from him, and fastened them on other things, the longer I looked at them the more they gradually turned to gold. My kids, my wife, my house and books and friends. The most terrifying of all was as I looked at my own hands gold was slowly taking over my flesh.  I came out of the dream realizing that whatever takes my  hearts affection from the Lord will turn to gold and become an idol. I know that my heart, like theirs, is constantly tempted to shape gods of our own. Even now, our own selves can turn to gilded calves.  Yet amidst the ashes of rebellion, the mercy of God calls again—covenant restored, tablets rewritten, fellowship renewed.

It is commonly assumed that Christianity rests upon the foundation of Judaism. Judaism is not just Old Testament only, as if they are only working with the same scriptures and laws that David and the prophets had. Rather, in less than a millennium from the giving of the Law at Sinai, a rabbinic tradition began to develop that cut away at the commands, worship, and reverence due to God. It replaced mercy with loopholes, God's authority with man's tradition, and instead of faith, a convoluted legal system meant to trick God in their favor. By the time of Jesus's ministry, 1500 years removed from the giving of the law, barely anything resembling true religion and worship remained.So today we are unpacking the source of these rabbinic teachings: The Talmud. We pause our series on "malaki" to present the important context of Israel's idolatry at the foot of Sinai in the incident of the golden calf. As Jenny and I studied this issue over the past several months we began to understand something important that has ramifications for both the Old and New Testament scripture, and all of Christian history and practice ever since. While in this episode we point to a form of human idolatry in its grosser aspects, we fear that the same sort of idolatry pervades today's evangelical churches in a more subtle manner. It seems to Jenny and I that instead of studying the Bible ourselves, many evangelicals become involved in religious fads that promote evangelical "superstars," teachers whose books become all the rage. Then, instead of studying the Bible, we study their books on the Bible. As an academic, this is the distinguishing between primary material - the Bible, and secondary material - books about the Bible. We should be doing much less of the latter, and much more of the former. The Bible is every Christian's primary source material. Like the Bereans, we must make it our priority, our authority, our delight in learning from God directly from His own voice. And this includes podcasts, like ours.
