This week Charlie and Rony welcome Russell Patton, Product Manager for the Snap Spectacles AR headset. It's a news week rich with AI news from OpenAI, Google, and others. OpenAI suffered a major outage on Wednesday, which may be related, according to Rony, to the theft of weighted models from its database. We thought it was related to stress on the system from the introduction of video generator Sora. Samsung gave the press a look at their upcoming Project Moohan on which they collaborated with Google on an AR OS for Android, and Qualcomm for its new microprocessor. Rony is in his element as discuss the new Spectacles, and Snap's strategy, with Patton. Thank you to our sponsor, Zappar!Don't forget to like, share, and follow for more! We'd love to hear from you! Send us a text message. In this episode of Discover Daily, we begin with a look at Snap's new fifth generation Spectacles. These AR glasses boast impressive hardware improvements, including a larger field of view, powerful processors, and a custom operating system. Snap's developer-focused approach aims to foster a robust ecosystem of AR applications before targeting consumers. While the Spectacles have received praise for their technological advancements, concerns about battery life and cost have also been raised.Next, we delve into the revolutionary Tianxing-B battery for electric buses, developed by CATL, the world's leading battery manufacturer. This technology offers an impressive lifespan of up to 15 years or 1.5 million kilometers, along with the highest energy density in the bus industry. The Tianxing-B battery's extended lifespan and high energy density could significantly accelerate the adoption of electric buses globally, reducing emissions and improving urban air quality. As CATL expands its dominance in the battery market, the impact of this innovation extends beyond public transit to the broader electric vehicle industry. Finally, we explore a paradigm-shifting discovery that challenges our understanding of life and death. Scientists have identified a "third state" where cells from deceased organisms can continue to function and even develop new capabilities. This research reveals that the transition between life and death is more complex than previously thought, with profound implications for regenerative medicine and our definition of existence. The ability of cells to reorganize and develop new functions in this "third state" could lead to advanced tissue regeneration techniques and cellular rejuvenation, potentially revolutionizing our approach to aging and longevity.Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. Driving from the flats of Beverly Hills up into the hills themselves feels like I'm entering into a different world. Here the picturesque, tree-line streets filled with beautiful homes give way to narrow, winding roads that snake their way to the tops of hillsides. In these hills, each home looks like an architectural marvel, delicately perched at the very edge of a steep slope, with expansive views of Los Angeles. It was in one of these homes where I met with key members of the Snap marketing team to preview Snap's latest efforts to build AR glasses, the 5th generation Spectacles. In this episode, I share my impressions of the device and my perspective on its place in the larger narrative of AR Glasses. To help set the stage, I had a chance to catch up with Sophia Dominguez, the Director of the AR Platform, at Snap. Prior to her four and a half years at Snap, Sophia started the widely followed “All Things VR” newsletter and joined Rothenberg Ventures as an Entrepreneur in Residence before co-founding her first company, SVRF. There she created the first API and SDKs for searching and rendering 3D face filters. They powered over 280M AR experiences, and she successfully sold the company to Poplar before joining Snap.Sophia began her career by attending NYU with a focus on how technology impacts human interaction. She then organized one of the world's first wearable technology conferences, before working in product and operations for a startup focused on visual messaging. You may remember Sophia from my interview with her published in the summer of 2023. Check out that two-part episode for her wonderful backstory and broader perspective on the market. Here we keep things very focused on the 5th generation Snap Spectacles.----Callout: Developers in the U.S. can join the Spectacles Developer Program for $99 per month with a one year commitment by visiting www.spectacles.com/lens-studio.
Finn is the founder of VR, AR and video game production company Chicken Waffle (creator of VR games including Baby Hands and Shadow of Valhalla); co-founder of virtual music concert company The Wave XR; and VR-based comedy club Failed to Render. I caught up with Finn before he headed down to Art Basel Miami where he planned to show off some of his work in metaverse art. This conversation covers a lot of ground: we cover how far virtual reality (VR) has come in the last few years, and the opportunities as it expands into AR and new hardware like smartglasses (e.g., Snap Spectacles)--and then get into some of the new experiences that involve art, music and even comedy. We talk about video games, and applications for the blockchain and NFTs to support creators across this ecosystem. This is a conversation I know you'll enjoy if you are intrigued by any of these topics.
Mark Zuckerberg may be busy pushing the idea of augmented and virtual reality worlds, but he is far from the first to start imaging them. Niantic CEO John Hanke heads the company that created Pokemon Go, the mobile game that was one of the first massive AR hits. Hanke has been augmenting reality for years now, and he says that his vision to bring people together in the real world is more egalitarian than Facebook's. This week on Gadget Lab, we welcome WIRED editor at large Steven Levy, who spoke to Hanke about how Niantic is countering Facebook's vision of the metaverse. Then Lauren talks with Bobby Murphy, the cofounder and CTO of Snap, and AR and VR developer Brielle Garcia, who makes lenses for Snap Spectacles about their vision for our augmented future.
It hasn't been smooth sailing for smart glasses. Marked by the failure of Google Glass (now repositioned for enterprise use), which was initially introduced in 2013, smart glasses are experiencing a revival as many other tech companies try their hand at the accessory. Snap released the Snap Spectacles to let users take pictures and videos, and they now sport AR and voice capabilities. Amazon's Echo Frames are embedded with Alexa. This week, Facebook enlisted EssilorLuxottica to unveil Ray-Ban Stories. It's clear that major tech companies see the potential for smart glasses, especially when paired with voice assistants. While these devices are getting less clunky and adding on more capabilities, it remains to be seen if they are compelling enough to spur widespread adoption. Early critiques pointing to Facebook's privacy track record are already rolling in. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rainagency/message
