Is the fear of failure holding you back from taking the first steps to establish your brand? Are you hesitating to start a podcast because you believe it would only be worthwhile if it garners millions of downloads? Our guest today is a true trailblazer in the podcast industry, having successfully built a thriving agency around his initial decision to create a show dedicated to entrepreneurs. Tune in for an insightful conversation on the power of pushing boundaries and the value of trying new things in the ever-evolving world of podcasting and entrepreneurship. Pat Flynn is the serial entrepreneur and podcasting pioneer behind Smart Passive Income, a massive podcast with a long history of teaching entrepreneurs proven strategies to run and optimize their businesses. He's also the founder SPI Media, an agency that helps people launch and grow their brands. Pat's podcast was actually the inspiration for the Smart Agency Masterclass podcast and now he joins Jason to discuss the importance of taking risks and embracing failure as part of the learning process. In this episode, we'll discuss: What's holding people back from starting a podcast? Mastering the podcasting game. 3 key principles for brand success. Letting go to grow: lessons on delegating. Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio Sponsors and Resources E2M Solutions: Today's episode of the Smart Agency Masterclass is sponsored by E2M Solutions, a web design, and development agency that has provided white-label services for the past 10 years to agencies all over the world. Navigating the Evolution of Your Brand and Business Just like Pat has inspired so many entrepreneurs, he was inspired by the Internet Business Mastery to start his own podcast in 2007. The result was so terrible he never released that episode and it took over a year for him to gather the courage to try again. After finally releasing his first episode in 2010, he's started several other podcasts and has amassed around 80 million downloads and a massive following. Much has changed since he chose Smart Passive Income as the name for his brand and “passive income” has recently gained some negative connotations due to influencers promoting the idea of making money without putting in even 1% of the work. As a result, some big brands are hesitant to partner with a business associated with the term. Of course, this is not what Pat teaches in his content, and, although he is now referring to it as just SPI, a rebrand is probably in the future to welcome as many opportunities as possible. Currently, Pat is running a business with 11 employees, which is something he never would've thought he'd do. Back when he started his business, he dreamt of running a very lean operation working exclusively with contractors. As the years went by, however, Pat felt a calling to help as many people as possible and he needed to bring the very best talent to the business to help him realize that. Once he had a team, especially his partner and CEO who took over project management and finances, Pat was able to focus on his zone of genius, doing interviews, building relationships, and going to events. Focusing Too Much on the Numbers: The Misconception Holding People Back from Podcasting For Pat, the number one reason people refrain from starting a podcast is the fear of wasting time. Things have changed a lot since he started and now it has become such a saturated space that he can't blame people for thinking theirs may just get lost in the multitude of new releases each day. Pat challenges agency owners to ask themselves, how many more clients do you need to make a positive impact in your business? Could a podcast help you close more business by attracting potential clients who wouldn't otherwise find your agency? If the answer is yes, he suggests tailoring podcast episodes to appeal to potential clients and help them feel at ease about engaging with the agency. In this sense, a podcast would provide the opportunity to define a much deeper relationship with your prospects than you would with a simple YouTube video. It's quite a powerful connection you can create with a podcast with the way you as the host can become someone's companion as they travel, walk their dog, or just go about their lives. Mastering the Podcasting Game: Strategies for Building a Successful Podcast When it comes to creating a successful podcast that resonates with a wide audience, having a clear vision and set goals is crucial. Merely hoping for a stroke of luck after posting your podcast episodes will likely lead to disappointment and frustration. Therefore, Pat suggests starting with a well-defined purpose and message. Additionally, he recommends seeking assistance with the editing process early on. Podcasting is a lot of work, from planning to recording and editing and you may end up feeling exhausted, potentially discouraging you from creating content consistently. Lean into the parts of the process you enjoy the most, which will probably be the planning and creating connections, and you'll start to see those connections lead to relationships and introductions to people who can open more doors. Don't lose sight of the benefits a podcast can truly bring to your business. This can happen when you focus exclusively on the numbers and get easily discouraged by low viewership numbers. Instead, focus on how an interview can lead to other opportunities; for instance, interviewing an industry leader can lead to being invited as a speaker to their event. Furthermore, it'll allow you to pick their brain and position yourself as an industry expert just by having that connection with them. Pro tip: Before he had his current numbers, Pat was able to get big interviews with figures like Gary Vaynerchuck by timing them just as they were releasing a new book. If you're looking to get big names, this is when they are far more likely to take every interview opportunity they can to promote their work. Humanizing Your Brand in the AI Era A lot of people hesitate on whether or not they should create a personal brand. Pat believes that with the surge of AI, having a brand now becomes even more important. With everyone using AI and automating processes, a personal brand means creating a way for people to connect with you, to create a connection that is just not possible with faceless corporations and automated response systems. In this sense, he also emphasizes the need to understand what a personal brand is and what it can offer. Basically, you'll need to have a clear idea of what you stand for, what are your values, and how the work you do reflects that. People want to connect with others who share the same values, which means that not putting yourself out there will make you a human AI no one can relate to. 3 Key Principles for Brand Success Back in 08, when he recorded that first podcast that never saw the light of day, Pat could've never imagined the evolution of his brand and the level of success he's seen over the years. Like most people, he was afraid of failure and thought he was unprepared to venture into the entrepreneurial world. With time, he's discovered experience would be the best teacher and the importance of solving a problem, which is why his guiding principles formed over years in the industry are: Worry about failing as fast as you can: Pat cautions agency owners against letting perfectionism lead to getting stuck. “The riskiest thing you can do now is play it safe. Bold actions lead to bold results.” Playing it safe can actually prevent you from adapting to changes and trying new things because what worked in the past may not work in the present. To progress and grow, one must be willing to take risks and try new approaches. Serving first: Focusing on solving a problem for others and providing value will help you build trust, loyalty, and ultimately, financial success. For Pat, this emphasizes the idea your earnings are a byproduct of how well you're serving your audience. Consider this rather than solely focusing on making money. Building community: Pat believes in the power of connection and belonging, which he fosters at his agency by creating safe spaces for his clients to come together. It's not only about finding an audience or how well you serve your audience. It's also about getting your people to find each other. Strengthening the bond between agency and clients will help future-proof your brand by creating a loyal and engaged community. Partnerships, Delegation, and Prioritization in Agency Leadership Pat's partnership with his now friend and CEO was the leverage he needed to start to transition away from the parts of the business he least enjoyed. Looking back, he realizes he was holding himself and the business back by not letting go sooner. It was not easy for him, as he sometimes regressed to try to get too involved and micromanage the team. To him, it's like holding on to a ladder that takes you to a certain height while trying to climb a new one that will take you higher. In the end, as long as there's open communication and a shared vision between partners, it's okay to let go and not fear that the agency will get off track. Additionally, Pat underlines there's no immediate need to train someone as CEO to have that kind of support. You may just need a business manager, which is a common struggle for agency owners. For those grappling with where to direct their attention and energy, Pat recommends delineating personal and business priorities. "If you haven't sat down with yourself, your partner, or your team to define your priorities, you'll feel busy while getting nowhere. Once you do, things will start to align," he advises. We often talk about the importance of body language and facial expressions, but do you know how to use body language effectively as a leader?Today we are joined by Richard Newman, CEO and founder of Body Talk.  Body Talk are the global leaders in evidence-based communication.  Richard is the author of the book “You were born to speak”.  He is also the recipient of the coveted cicero award for speechwriting.  In today's interview we explore the science of storytelling; leader's presence and something Richard calls “Leaders LIFT”Richard spent part of his early life living in the Himalayas teaching English to Tibetan monks. During this time he discovered a deep interest in the role of body language and how people with no common language can still somehow understand each other.A key element is congruence.  Everything about your body language and facial expressions needs to be congruent with the message you are delivering. When we are incongruent we confuse people and fail to connect with them authenticallyCommunication is all about how we connect with people.  Congruence helps us to connect authentically with people and make them feel like they matter to us.To build congruence we start with self-awareness. Becoming aware of your presence and what your body language and facial expressions are communicating.A key message is about “Gravitas”.  We hear this term a lot but have you ever thought about what it means. It draws from our posture and stance.  Standing in a grounded way where gravity works for us and shows that we cannot be pushed over brings a level of authority of what you are speaking about. To increase your influence on others we must focus on our mindset. Being mindful; focusing on our presence and ensuring that our presentation is focused on the people we are talking about you.  It is not about you, it is about your audience. Effective communication as a leader means that you see the whole of the person.  Listening to the words, listening to the tone, paying attention to the body language and facial expressions. When paying attention to these shifts in body language and tone it is critical to “listen without judgement” and respond with genuine curiosity with questions like “what just shifted for you there?”You can find out more about Richard at ukbodytalk.com and his Instagram @richardnewmanspeaks and on LinkedIn Richard Newman from Bodytalk. Our sponsor today was SPI Media.Apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP  SPI's amazing array of courses  - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4  The Leadership Project:Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj  Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1  Website - www.mickspiers.com  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

Do you understand the power of brand and storytelling?  Do you understand how to embrace brand and storytelling as leader? This week we are joined by Charlie Feinerman. Charlie is an award winning strategist; a brand storyteller; and the Director of account strategy at Taoti Creative. We discuss brand and storytelling in detail and what the leader's role is in projecting a brand.Everyone has a brand whether they realise it or not.  Your brand as a leader is a reflection of your values and how you go about your business. Everything from how you treat other people to what you prioritise when you make decisions.Your brand is not what YOU say it is, your brand is what others say it is. The way you behave will impact your personal brand in all of your everyday interactions. Some homework for the audience this week.  Do you know what is YOUR personal brand?  What actions do you take to ensure that the brand you are projecting is the brand you would be proud of and want to project.Emotion plays a vital role here. Your brand perception will generally be emotive and how people FEEL about you and their interactions with you.Third Party Trust and Social Proof is the amplifier of your brand.  People learn about your brand from their interactions with you. In the absence of any interactions, they will revert to social proof from their friends or other people they trust.Every member of your team is an ambassador of your brand.  The leader plays a key role to set the standard here. Everyone in your team is looking for signals from you. If you are consistent with being “on brand” then others will start to follow. All of your actions need to be consistent with the Voice of the brand.  If you want to be seen as a fun brand; be fun. If you want to be a luxury brand; portray luxury in all that you do.Charlie shared the power of storytelling.  Storytelling makes you feel something.  Bringing emotion creates something memorable. The emotion of the story is processed in the limbic brain which is the same part of the brain that makes decisions. As a leader, consider now:What is your personal brand? What do you do to project that brand? What is your team or organisation's brand?Have you embraced the power of storytelling to be more memorable and inspire people into action? You can find out more about Charlie and Taoti Creative by reaching out to him on LinkedIn or at Charlie.feinerman@gmail.comOur sponsor today was SPI Media.Apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP  SPI's amazing array of courses  - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4  The Leadership Project:Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj  Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1  Website - www.mickspiers.com  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

We are honoured today to be joined by Stephen Shedletzky, or better known as Shed.  Shed is an igniter, speaker and master facilitator with Simon Sinek, Inc. Shed is in the process of writing an important book on psychological safety with the working title of “Speak Up Culture. When leaders truly listen people step up.”  In the words of Amy Edmondson, psychological safety is about high candor and low fear. Converse to what many may think, psychological safety is not about having a lovey dovey environment. We need to strive for an environment where people feel they can openly speak their mind without fear of judgement or retribution.  Some of the keys to creating a speak up culture include: Leading from the front and speaking up yourselfLeading with canderous conversation with high candor and low fearConsider the behaviour you are rewarding.  Are you rewarding people when they speak up? Are you inadvertently rewarding the behaviour you don't want? The 2 components are to encourage and reward. Without psychological safety we open up our organisation's to learned helplessness and learned fear A good place to start is be open and transparent about your own weaknesses and strengths.  This demonstrates that it is okay to speak up; to put up your hand; to admit mistakes; to admit you need help with something. You do not want to miss this amazing interview between Mick Spiers and Stephen Shedletzky. You can find Shed on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephenshedletzkyOur sponsor today was SPI Media. You can apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP  You can find SPI's amazing array of courses at the following link - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4  The Leadership Project:Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj  Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1  Website - www.mickspiers.com  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab  #speakupculture #psychologicalsafety #shedletzky #simonsinek

Today we are joined by Yemi Penn, an inspirational woman succeeding in the male-dominated world of engineering. She describes herself as an Engineer by profession and Entrepreneur by passion.  She is the author of the book “Did you get the memo?” and the producer and star of the incredible documentary “Did I choose my trauma?” which is an absolute must see.In “Did you get the memo?” Yemi encourages us all to challenge the status quo of societal expectations and the pressures we feel.  In her new course “Create your own memo” she encourages students to break the shackles of expectation and create a memo that is based on your own personal definition of success. The key theme today is Trauma.  In “Did I choose my trauma?” she shares very openly about her own childhood trauma and how she was able to process that. She is now in a position to share her wisdom and show people the way to process trauma in their lives.Yemi encourages us to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable. This gives us permission to not run away during a moment of trauma; to work through it; to not shut down and bury it deep down inside ourselves.  Great things happen just the other side of your own comfort zone.  This applies equally to our own self-awareness and to embrace empathy. To be uncomfortable feeling someone else's pain so that you can better understand what they are going through and be there for them.Talking about your trauma can be extremely cathartic.  It can help you to process and get through those challenging moments.  Then as you come out the other end you will be ready to share your story so others can also learn from it.Yemi provides wonderful advice on how a leader can help their team at times of trauma.  Trauma that could happen within the organizational walls or trauma that happens in their personal life and impact their wellbeing in and outside work.  She provides great insights on how a leader can be there for that person and to also seek professional help when needed.  This could include encourage your team to join a community of people that have been (or are going) through the same things your team member is experiencing.Any leader that cares deeply for their team should not miss this amazing interview. You can find information about the inspirational Yemi Penn at www.yemipenn.com including links to her groundbreaking documentary; her book and her course. Our sponsor today was SPI Media. You can apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP You can find SPI's amazing array of courses at the following link - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4 The Leadership Project:Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326 LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1 Website - www.mickspiers.com YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

As we continue our celebration of inspirational women in the month of March we are delighted to be joined by Roberta Whitney Hughes.  Roberta is the Founder of PeaceFull Living and the lead instructor of PeaceFull Living TV.  Roberta helps people to redefine their relationship with stress.  Today we explore the key topic of authenticity and showing up as your authentic self.Roberta openly shares her story about discovering her own identity.  Growing up in a mixed race family she was confronted with government forms asking her to pick 1 race and never finding that this matched her true identity.  We strive for a world where we can celebrate who someone is and their cultural heritage without it being a source of discrimination or bias.We all look for authenticity in our leaders. For Roberta, Authenticity means leading more from your heart than your head. She breaks this into 3As.  Awareness; Acceptance; and Acknowledgement.  Many people struggle with self-love and self-care.  Filling your head with your perceptions of what other people say or think about us.  Acceptance is about moving past your limiting beliefs and loving yourself for the person that you are.Acknowledgement is celebrating your strengths; owning them and being courageous to share those strengths. The positive impact of showing up as your authentic self is that you can create a flow of energy and connectedness with the people around you.  When you do the opposite, when you are simply “playing a role” it is exhausting for you and comes off as inauthentic to others.  As a leader, if you show your authentic self it also encourages others that they are in a safe place to also show up as their authentic self.Managing your stress starts with self-awareness. Start with acknowledging that everyone has stress, being aware of your symptoms and triggers of stress.  Then be ready with techniques to convert that stress into something that works for you instead of against you. When managed well stress can be a positive.  It help you get just beyond the edge of your comfort zone where great things can happen.Roberta has graciously offered a 30% discount to the audience of The Leadership Project.  You can use the Promo Code LEADERSHIP30 at www.Peacefullliving.comYou can catch the Pantene commercial mentioned in the show here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luLkfXixBpM  Our sponsor today was SPI Media. You can apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP You can find SPI's amazing array of courses at the following link - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4 You can find more information on The Leadership Project at the following links:Private Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326 LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1 Website - www.mickspiers.com YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

Deb has an incredible track record of success working as a woman in the male-dominated industry of public transit before moving on to form the Wathen Group. She shares with us her secrets for how she turned around the performance of New Jersey Transit. Turning NJ Transit from the worst performing agency in the region to a high performance team that the others were left to admire.Deb's secret was to treat people with respect; treat them like they matter; and actively engage them in the change process. It is often the people on the shop floor, those closest to the action, that have the best ideas of what is needed to be done. Create an environment where people feel their voice is heard; where there opinions are valued and where people have the psychological safety that allows them to speak up. This will provide great insights into what he happening in your team and business and what can be done to achieve high performance We spoke of the challenges of the “messy middle” where change efforts can get lost without effective communication and engagement with middle management. You can have executive management with a clear vision and you can have those at the shop floor with a desire to change and do better and the message is lost in middle management if there is not effective communication.Deb's inspirational story is not one to be missed. If you would like to know more about Deb and The Wathen Group you can find them at www.thewathengroup.com  Our sponsor today was SPI Media. You can apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP  You can find SPI's amazing array of courses at the following link - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4  You can find more information on The Leadership Project at the following links:You can join our Private Facebook Community at the following link - https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326                 Follow The Leadership Project on all of our social channels as follows:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj                       Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj                         Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj                          Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1                          Website - www.mickspiers.com                      YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

We are joined by Jillian Benbow, the Director of Community Experience at SPI Media, Pat Flynn's organisation that spawned from his Smart Passive Income podcast.Digital communities help people to “find their tribe”.  Community allows you to achieve connectedness with people that see you; that have experienced the same things you are feeling and see you for you are.  This empowers you to show up as a your authentic self.  We discuss a key difference between Digital Community and Social Media and the dangers that social media can present for people. Social media has become a place where people show you an artificial glimpse into their life. This can lead to the dangers of comparison and feeling that you are not enough and somehow inferior.  Conversely, communities are supportive environments that are there to help you and meet you where you are. Where you can be yourself.Communities can be both a positive and negative when it comes to diversity of thought.  Communities that spread beyond your organisational boundaries can bring new thinking back into your organisation.  The negative can come if you ONLY surround yourself that look, act and think like you.So, what are the lessons for leaders here. A great leader will encourage their team to look for communities and support outside your organisation.  This can bring a level of expertise in specific topics that you may not be able to bring to your team.Community is also critical for solopreneurs.  Having a supportive environment where you can learn from others.  Giving you a support network that is larger than you may otherwise have.  Solopreneurs are everything from CEO to Janitor in their business.  This can be both very lonely and overwhelming if you try to do everything yourself. We wrap up the discussion with some crystal ball gazing and thinking about what the future of community may hold including the Web 3.0 movement and Distributed Autonomous Organisations (DAOs).You can apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP You can find SPI's amazing array of courses at the following link - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4 You can find more information on The Leadership Project at the following links:You can join our Private Facebook Community at the following link - https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326                Follow The Leadership Project on all of our social channels as follows:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj                      Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj                        Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj                         Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1                         Website - www.mickspiers.com                     YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab1rQ

The Smart Passive Income Online Business and Blogging Podcast

#552 In Wednesday's episode, we chatted with Marisa Pier about the money stories (and other stories!) we tell ourselves that then become our reality. Today, I wanted to talk a little about my own money story, because it's definitely had a role in the difficulty I had with my transition from a nine-to-five to entrepreneurship. As I was getting started as an entrepreneur, I held onto a lot of my money—and it definitely got me in trouble. In order to succeed with my business, I had to get over the idea of “I can't afford it.” Now, instead I'm focused on what's important, the north star, the mission and values here at SPI Media. Because when you do that, the question becomes, “How could I afford not to? In the last session, I brought up the books Key Person of Influence and OverSubscribed both written by Daniel Priestley and one thing that these books have made is that the dream of the solopreneur is a pipedream. In fact, as a business owner, we need to seek collaborative teamwork as soon as possible. And, as I've been telling people in my day to day life, I think these books are as vital to someone's success as an entrepreneur as Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The E-Myth Revisited are. Sure, you can go without reading any of these books... but I highly suggest you don't pass them over. For the longest time, today's guest might have been considered the Ultimate Warrior of Solopreneurship. In fact, for much of its history, Smart Passive Income (SPI) featured Pat Flynn as the Crash Test Dummy of Online Business. And if he could start a six figure passive income business on his own, anyone could. But here's the thing. For several years now, he's been part of a team. Sure, he's been the head of creative at SPI, but he's been part of a team. And I have to admit, when that transition happened out of the blue, I (and I'm sure plenty of others) felt left behind. But as you'll hear, when he joined forces with Matt Garland and his team, things completely changed. The power of collaborative teamwork began changing his business and his life.Listen in as Veronica and I hear about his Pat his journey of leaving the legend of the great solopreneur behind to join his own team of Avengers.I think it's a lesson we all have to hear moving forward.Enjoy!
