Come to think of it, even the person that we want to be, changes, but that's another topic altogether. So, how do we change behavior, especially now that we are more stubborn than ever as adults? Let's try to clear things out.

He is the New York Times bestselling author of the Smartest series of books, a collection of investment, financial planning, and wealth-building books that have been endorsed by The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Vanguard's founder, John Bogle. His latest book, Ask: How To Relate To Anyone, helps readers understand the psychology and neuroscience behind creating deep, meaningful connections with anyone. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Dan regularly conducts workshops and presentations to advisors and advisory firms throughout North America. Dan joins me today to discuss the lessons he's learned while researching the psychology and neuroscience behind building relationships and meaningful connections with others. We discuss how creating meaningful business relationships is more about being authentic and building the ‘know, like, and trust' factor and less about sharing analytical data and processes. Dan shares tips and strategies you can use to truly connect with your prospective clients. We discuss some of the common misconceptions advisors often have about why someone might hire them and why it's crucial to emphasise your likability over your expertise in your branding and marketing. We highlight the differences between cognitive trust and effective trust. We also discuss why your response time is critical to converting leads into clients, why most decisions are rooted in our emotions, and the importance of letting go of trying to control the flow and agenda of your sales meetings and, instead, leading them with the intention of getting to know your client better. “We do business with people we like. If we like people, we trust them. If we trust them, we hire them.” - Dan Solin This week on The Model FA Podcast: Dan's definition of evidence-based advisors Strategies for deeply connecting with your ideal clients Common misconceptions around the hiring process and the decisions a potential client makes Putting emphasis on likability over expertise in your brand messaging and marketing strategies How conversations over personal passions, interests, and hobbies create unique bonds Why Dan believes many advisors hesitate to ‘put themselves out there' to be relatable Leaning into being vulnerable, authentic, and showing genuine interest in your client's passions and hobbies Understanding the difference between ‘cognitive trust' and ‘effective trust' The ‘Moment of Seduction' principle of sales and how your response time impacts your ability to convert a client The value of leading your initial sales calls with personal interest questions and letting go of trying to control the meeting flow and agenda Resources Mentioned: The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis What Got You Here Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful by Marshall Goldsmith and Mark Reiter Our Favorite Quotes: “The orientation of every touch-point, including websites, should be: ‘How do I present myself as more likable?' A trigger is any stimulus that reshapes our thoughts or actions. Bill Auxier is the President and CEO of Dynamic Leadership Academy where he specializes in executive coaching, specifically in the healthcare industry. In this episode, Bill breaks down the method called team stakeholder-centered executive coaching, and discusses the power of personal assessments and feedback. To learn more about Bill and team stakeholder-centered executive coaching, you can tune into his podcast Rural Health Leadership Radio at rhlradio.com or visit his website at billauxier.com Truth You Can Act On 1. Focus on One Thing to Make a Difference Supporting Quote Bill Auxier: “For the executive team, they felt like they needed to become better communicators, but one of their big picture objectives was improving employee engagement. So working with them, identifying a goal, a team goal around communication, and then working on that with each of the senior leadership team members, as well as a group. Each person created their own individual goal that contributed to the team goal, and through that stakeholder centered coaching process, we measure the results of their growth in their behavioral change and their growth and communication.” 2. Pivot Feedback to Feed-Forward Supporting Quote Bill Auxier: “Feedback is important to me because I can learn from it, but I can't change anything, whereas feed forward is a suggestion on how I can improve in the future. We can't change the past. We can learn from the past, but we're all striving to perform better in the future. And that's why we want to emphasize feed forward because to a certain extent, we got to let go of the past. The past is behind us. We learn from it, yes, but we need to let go of the past. Then in that moment live in the present and then work towards the future. And that's what feed forward is all about.” 3. Change Your Behavior Supporting Quote Bill Auxier: “If I told you that I was wanting to become a better listener, because I think I need to be a better listener, and I think it would make a big impact on our ability to work together. So occasionally I'd like to ask you for some feedback and feed forward. I can read all kinds of books, I can Google how to be a better listener. I can read all these articles. I can be doing all these trick things in my brain to be a better listener, but if I never asked you if I'm being a better listener, how am I going to know if I'm being a better listener? I can learn from that. I'm constantly asking you for feedback and feed forward, so after a while, you're going to say, ‘Hey, I guess they are taking this seriously, and he really does want to become a better listener.’ And then when I implement an idea that you suggested to me, you're actually going to notice it because you suggested it to me...And so not only am I changing my behavior, you're noticing how my behavior is changing because we're always talking about, and so that's how you can change behavior and the perception of that behavior simultaneously. 4. Say “Thank You” After Feedback Supporting Quote Bill Auxier: “When you ask someone for feedback, after someone tells you, you can only respond with two words, sometimes three words, but those two words are ‘Thank you’, or you could include their, their name, ‘Thank you, Nikki.’ The reasoning behind that is, has anyone ever asked you for feedback about something, you give them feedback and then they tell you why you’re wrong? Does that encourage you to give that person more feedback? No, because they didn't really want feedback. They want you to agree with whatever they did. So if you're going to ask for feedback, and if you're going to build trust, and if you're gonna encourage others to do this again, when you ask for feedback or when you ask for feeds forward, after you listen to what they say, you don't interrupt them. You let them tell you what they're going to tell you. You can only respond with two or three words. ‘Thank you’, or “Thank you, NAME.’ That's it.” Book Recommendations Triggers by Mark Reiter and Marshall Goldsmith What Got You Here Won't Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith

Active listening is much more than just inserting "yeah" or "okay" at regular intervals in a conversation. Active listening also means listening with respect, with engagement, and listening with your whole body. Thinking before you speak. Creating connections with people and helping to ensure that they don't leave a conversation with you feeling bad about it, or about you. "Thank you" is such a versatile phrase! After bingeing on several personal development books over the last week that have to do with behavioral changes and forming and ending habits, it occurred to me that there are three situations (at least) where you should just say thank you...and then shut up. Shye and Craig break down the core concepts from Triggers: Creating Behavior That Lasts – Becoming the Person You Want to Be, by Marshall Goldsmith and Mark Reiter. Why do we struggle to behave in ways that benefit us? Our environment is full of hidden triggers that make creating change difficult, but by becoming aware of our triggers, we can develop new responses to them. Learn how to build new behaviors that have a positive impact on your business and personal relationships.
FACING FEAR AND ADVERSITY Being fearless isn’t the lack of fear. Rather, it is about acknowledging, facing and conquering fears. Fearlessness is being open to the results of the experience whether it be good or bad. There are so many lessons to learn from failure and adversity, but you will not give yourself the chance to grow if you keep yourself safe in what’s known and secure. Overcoming adversity is what makes a leader a great leader. Today’s guest is a man who harnesses the power of fear. He is an expert on authentic leadership. His highly popular book, Executive After Hours (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/executives-after-hours-real-conversations-with-leaders/id955874352?mt=2) . Get ready for expansion, growth and inspiration from Dr. James Kelley. In this podcast, Dr. James Kelley reveals how to become and authentic leader. You will discover: Major adversities that helped Dr. Kelley become the man he is today How a DUI experience helped him grow The power of “flipping” to combat fear. Your lizard brain’s dangerous agenda How Enlightened Warrior Training Camp changes lives in five days How your darkest moment can become your greatest gift How life in the Middle East redefined James Kelley’s comfort zone Secrets of Dr. Kelley’s Authentic Leadership model How to spot your false narratives on happiness and success The power of micro-moments of meaning How crucible moments can enrich your life How thinking about your eulogy can make you a better leader The importance of self-compassion QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “We all have moments. The bigger question is not if we have them but if we are able to reflect on them and find a good in them to expand who we are as human beings.” “You are allowed to have your pity if you want it but the important thing is not to wallow in it.” “We are all creatures of our social construction that we’ve been created and raised in.” “We only know our truth based on the environment that we are raised in.” “Don’t let fear conquer you. You conquer your fear.” “Fear is a fundamental factor on many of the choices that we make.” “The world changes when your mind changes.” “Somebody always has it worse than you.” “If you are not evolving, you are dying.” “When we have adversity, we often don’t know that that moment is transformational.” “Money doesn’t actually equate to happiness.” “Authenticity is trying to be a better version of yourself for the greater good of society.” “Crucible moment is any fundamental moment in your life that forces you to take pause and re-evaluate and fundamentally shift who you are.” “It’s so hard to take care of yourself. But when you do, it makes it easier to take care of other people.” “To be right with yourself means you can be right with other people.” “Do what is right but you don’t have to be right.” BOOKS IN THIS PODCAST (http://cruciblesgift.com/change) by James B. It’s refreshing when a professional reaches out and asks for help during a period of career growth - for executive coaching. Since this has happened quite a bit this month, Marshall Goldsmith and Mark Reiter’s terrific coaching book, Triggers, came to mind. You may have heard of Marshall before, he’s a really good coach and he’s been doing it at a very high level for decades. Powerful and lasting growth usually requires objective evaluation and structured coaching. Notice that evaluation and coaching are different forms of feedback. A common example of objective evaluation is a 360 review with inputs from different groups such as peers, direct reports, supervisors, in addition to ourselves. Triggers was written in part, because we all have many internal triggers that hold us back, especially when receiving feedback. So, how can we think, in a general sense, about how to overcome all of these internal switches we usually aren’t aware of? Chapters Nine and Ten, The Power of Active Questions & The Engaging Questions, form the heart of Triggers, with numerous engaging coaching stories. Goldsmith reflects when people are asked passive questions; they almost invariably provide “environmental” answers, often allowing a diversion from needed accountability. As a remedy, four magic moves are mentioned, which trigger decent behavior in others: Apologizing, Asking for help, Optimism, and asking active questions. Active questions can’t be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ and the better we know someone, the better questions we may ask. Here’s an example: “Tell me something important to you that would allow me to help you become more successful and happier?” Now let’s introduce Goldsmith’s six engaging questions: Did I do my best to set clear goals today? Did I do my best to make progress toward my goals today? Did I do my best to find meaning today? Did I do my best to be happy today? Did I do my best to build positive relationships today? Did I do my best to be fully engaged today? Notice that each of these questions challenge us, daily, to do good, or to be choinque. They trigger good behavior. We can call this self coaching. Good leaders coach others, and themselves. Leaders ask active and engaging questions.
