On today's 71st episode of TheThrillerZone, I'm honored to welcome back the multi-talented author of not only the Tom Clancy thriller #ZeroHour, but the #MattDrakeSeries of thrillers: Don Bentley. Yes, Don joins The TZ for a healthy round of information dispersal, intriguing conversation about the military, epic thrillers, the Tom Clancy legacy, his masterful editor Tom Colgan, and so much more. Sure, we cover his Matt Drake Series, which includes: #WithoutSanction, #TheOutsideMan, and #HostileIntent, but we also drill into his Tom Clancy thrillers, #TargetAcquired and his latest, #ZeroHour. We also talk writing tools, ball-caps vs. Stetsons, Cowboy boots, ribs 'n beer, guns 'n knives, helicopters and vacation spots. That's right, you can't get this sort of entertainment just ANYwhere! Don also sheds some healthy insights and pearls of wisdom about what it takes to make it as a successful writer today. "You have to know and respect the business," Don says. "Because if you don't give the audience what they want, you'll have a tough time selling your books." When Don quotes the world-famous Stephen King, and shares King's take on "the blue collar part and the magic part" of successful writing, well I, along with most all my friends whom are writers, perked up and listened to the promo on Twitter that provided a sneak peek into what was to come on today's show. Bentley was premiered on my show last August ('21), and I'm thrilled to have him back. Side note, THIS Don Bentley has seasoned and grown wiser with age (and page count), and I for one just lapped up his words-of-wisdom; as I'm sure you will too. Kick back and enjoy our talk about #ThrillerFest and the magic of #writingcommunity and attending #writingconferences, as well as practices you can incorporate into your work every day. Lastly, we do our fair amount of name dropping; not to impress you, but to simply share some of the insights of those whom have led the way. They include: Mark Greaney, Nick Petrie, Don Winslow, Brad Taylor, Andrews & Wilson, Chris Hauty, Eric Bishop & Steve Stratton, to name a few. If you'd like to dig deeper, and perhaps pick up one (or more) of Don's books, go to: https://DonBentleyBooks.com (DonBentleyBooks.com), and be sure to FOLLOW him on both Twitter & Facebook @bentleydonb. And as always, I thank you for listening to our podcast on https://TheThrillerZone.com (TheThrillerZone.com), or any and all the places you enjoy your podcasts. However, her running was still interrupted at key points by injury. Looking back she can’t help but wonder what she might’ve achieved if she’d have really fully understood the concept of being too fit for your legs. #AskJake:  Each week, we'll take one of your questions and Jake will answer it.  Today, Julie wants to know whether to follow "the 10% rule" when increasing mileage, or not. See the full show notes & resources here: http://runningwithjake.com/plodcast

This week, the boys kick things off with possibly the best opening ever, then to make things more complicated they change up the usual episode structure. - To start, they receive an update from mullet-less Ron about his August challenge, in doing so they learn that Tuna is the salad of the sea, then Luke gets REAL personal. - To attempt to clean up the conversation, they find out that Luke's been camping, and he always goes to the movies with the Teen Titans. - They talk BladeRunner 2049, miserable Harrison Ford. Cloak and Dagger, the Marvel TV show available on Amazon Prime. Ron decides to jump on board with Baby Driver. - Deep talk about the first Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay trailer, and it seems like all 3 of the boys are excited about putting their Chaps on and grabbing their Stetsons. - The excitement keeps on coming when the boys jump in to Insert Questions Here with their contest winning guest, questions about favourite Nic Cage films, the face waterfall, massages with John Travolta and world domination. - They try not to piss off the Mafia - Have they flip flopped on TV shows after a recommendation? Find out in this episode, Luke gets defensive about Gilmore Girls and Ron comes up short with an answer. Toby then shuffles the question, and they poop on TV shows, Luke makes another ringing endorsement. - Ron's attention span is questioned and they give their guest a turtles character and ask him what he'd prefer to be bitten by, then out of nowhere a Marvel DC turf war. Toby talks SpiderMan, Luke comes back with Batman... Synopsis Little Miss Sure Shot is a fictionalized account of the life of Annie Oakley, drawing heavily on the real timelines and events of her life. The book invents situations, people she meets, and a myriad of conversations. Moreover, while the book is presented chronologically, apart from the prologue, it skips certain periods and attempts to focus on those that are especially vital, such as the early years Annie spent with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, including the tours through Europe. A special feature of the novel is the framing of Annie's loving marriage to fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler, whom she married at sixteen and remained married to for 50 years until her death. Frank was far more than just her husband - he was her manager (he gave up his own shooting for that role) and her constant companion. The novel closes with an epilogue in Frank's voice, presenting an overview of their lives together and the circumstances of her death in 1926.   Excerpt There was nothing like Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, and there never would be again. It was the best thing Annie and Frank were ever involved with, and it took them to places Annie had never dreamed about, like London and Paris. And it made her famous: Some wrote during her time with the show that she was one of the most famous women in the world. It wasn’t a circus; it was an event, an extravaganza. Cody had devised a series of tableaus, each involving dozens or more performers, that played up key themes and events from the West. The most specific one was the defeat of Custer at Little Big Horn, with the make-believe battle and the slaughtering of the cavalry. He also had pioneers crossing the prairie and being attacked by Indians, and scenes from Indian villages and firefights with Mexicans. More than anything, it was about the taming of the West. It was loud and rousing. The Indians didn’t come off all that well, but it treated much of their culture with real feeling, and emphasized their bravery as much as their savagery. And it used real Indians as performers, a fact that was highly unusual for the day. It was hard to describe the show without talking about its scale. It was what Annie learned to call a menagerie, a new word for her. There were Indians galore, decked in war paint and feathers, with bows and lances. There were Mexicans, with huge sombreros and serapes draped over their shoulders. There were cowboys in chaps and Stetsons, with big mustaches. There were even long-horne

I know a few people who have Stetsons. Infact, when my brother was visiting a few months ago, he bought himself a couple. They are good quality, and last for a long time. Where he lives is very sunny, so they are a charming, and unusual way to get shade in New Zealand. Stetson is an icon of American society. It's typically American, like baseball, and Elvis Presley. Close to the end of the 19th century, the Stetson Hat Company was the biggest in the world, producing over three million hats a year. Even in our little, downtown museum, we have a glass case that is dedicated to the Stetson company. I had no idea that women's hats were also made. John B. Stetson started his company in 1865. Initially, only men's hats were made. It wasn't until the 1930's that ladies hats were also made. The company is based in Garland, Texas, and is now one of the largest in the country. This success story is said to have started when John Stetson went to Colorado to prospect for gold. While he was there, the story goes, he made a hat out of the untreated leather taken from furs that he had collected on his journey. Because his father was a hatter, he had experience with materials and design. He wanted to show off what he could do to his friends. The resulting hat was soft, and protected him from the elements. What started out as a joke, proved to be the first stepping stone to a business. This hat had a wide brim, a large crown (or head piece), and could even be used to carry water. Apparently, later on, John's group met a cowboy who paid him five dollars in gold for the hat. It was this experience that encouraged him to create his signature hat, 'The Boss of the Plains'. He replicated the fashionable hats, but when he launched his own design, it was then that he became successful. The original company was sold in the 1970's to another company, but it, to this day, retains the Stetson logo for those particular hats. I have noticed around town, that some men, especially of Hispanic origin, or older caucasian men, will wear a Stetson for an elegant occasion. When it's time to dress up, the Stetson hat comes out of its box, to put the finishing touches in a formal situation. Grammar notes. Related vocabulary and expressions: a couple, initially, ...is said to , proved to be. 1. The eclairs in the bakery looked amazing, so I bought a couple. 2. Initially, sales were slow at the beginning of the season, but then things improved. 3. She is said to have been seven feet tall and covered in hair. 4. The cheapest wine proved to be the very best. // //
