Penny Peters is a member of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation. She is the Manager at Akwesasne Travel. Penny has been an integral part of the establishment of Akwesasne Travel and furthering the development of the tourism industry in Akwesasne. Penny is currently working to promote Akwesasne Travel through marketing, partnerships, and awareness of indigenous culture. Penny has strong ties to the community, the environment, and traditional ways. Penny believes that indigenous tourism is not only a means of economic growth for communities but also crucial for cultural preservation. In 2021 Penny was elected to the NYSTIA Board and was excited to represent NY Tourism and the North Country. She has also been advocating for Indigenous tourism, especially within NY State. She hopes to help support indigenous businesses to create mutually beneficial partnerships with non-native entities to grow and strengthen the industry. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Penny Peters about the process of developing tourism for her indigenous nation and the challenges they have faced along the journey. We discuss the tours that Akwesasne Travel has designed, their plans for marketing those programs, and the partnerships they've developed. Penny also shares the details of the tour planning process and why it was so important to ensure that her community approved every aspect. What You Will Learn in this Episode: The unique nature of the Akwesasne nation and the areas their land encompasses in New York State and across into Canada. How Penny and her colleagues are approaching tourism and the experience they hope to deliver Their focus on community artisans and how they market those small-group tours What Penny learned from other travel consultants and how she applied that knowledge to her indigenous community, taking into consideration their particular customs and needs How Akwesasne Travel got creative about what they could offer and some of their current tours Challenges that Penny and her colleagues faced in developing the tourism industry in their nation, particularly the issues around crossing the U.S / Canadian border during the COVID-19 pandemic Some of the partnerships they developed to circumnavigate problems and increase their offering Collaborations that have worked well for Akwesasne Travel and that are that they are planning to develop in the future The importance of recognizing that although you may have a plan or guideposts, sometimes you have to pivot to be successful and achieve your goals Penny's advice for others who may be starting down the path of tourism development. Developing Tourism for an Indigenous Nation There can be some unexpected challenges around developing a tourist offering as a native community, and one of those things is educating consultants and partners. There can be challenges in connecting with regional tourism offices because of the unique situation of the native people. On the podcast, Penny shares her firm belief that it is vital to keep an open mind and keep having conversations with potential partners. We also discuss the necessity of planning and preparing to develop as a tourist region and why it's so important to be able to flex when the situation changes. Akwesasne Travel's Creative Offerings Penny describes how they began to develop tours in their region, kicking off by getting out in the community, sharing their plans, and asking for feedback on where they wanted visitors to go and what they wanted to share about their culture. She describes one of their first community initiatives set up at a powwow and where they invited local artisans to start collaborating to build a large traditionally woven basket, and how that gave Penny and her team an opening to talk about their plans to bring tourists to the area and share how it would help the local economy to grow. Collaborations and Partnerships Working with other organizations is central to how Akwesasne Travel works — they have recently participated in a reenactment event set in 1784 arranged by a local museum on the Canadian side of the nation to share what life looked like at that time. On the U.S. side, they have a longstanding collaboration in place with the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, which they are planning to expand even further. The Akwesasne nation also shares and collaborates with other indigenous nations to allow visitors an insight into their cultures. In this week's episode of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport, your humble host reports that spring is here, clocks have now been set to reflect Daylight Savings Time, and the ice season is winding down, although old man winter isn't done with surprises just yet. Coyote season closes March 26, 2022, while all other small game and fur bearer seasons closed Feb 28. NYSCC is holding their Spring meeting at SUNY Cobbleskill on April 9, 2022 from 9AM-4PM, and will be a hybrid format. Committee chairs are advised to hold their committee meetings prior to this day, as no time will be available for the individual committee meetings. The first annual Golf Outing information has also been released by NYSCC, which will be July 11, 2022 at Seneca Falls Country Club. $500 per foursome, with a limit of 20 foresomes, which includes greens fees, carts, beverages and a late lunch and awards. Registration starts 10AM, shotgun start at 11AM, lunch 4:30PM. Sponsorship levels are available, and deadline to register for the outing is July 1. Meanwhile, in Vermont, wildlife officials are working to reduce moose numbers due to tick infestations and how ticks easily winter in large numbers on moose. Looking to add another 100 tags to the mix. And in North Carolina, the return of bear hunting in three bear sanctuaries, as populations are rising, as are conflicts. The ice is still nice, but not for much longer. Winners of the first Chautauqua Lake Ice Derby were awarded their winnings on March 12, with the big winner, also receiving a free walleye charter on Lake Erie from Mostly Muskies Charters. Thank you to Mike Sperry of Chautauqua Reel Outdoors for his tremendous partnership in this event, and to Capt. Larry Jones for donating the charter. Next years' event will be much bigger, and as Angler Tom Cermak remarked, "If you ice fish Chautauqua Lake, you'd be crazy not to enter. With 6 categories, all it takes is one drop of the line and you could win something. It isn't just about walleye!" We are still waiting for the fishing regs to be codified, and should hear something any day now. And the record breaking trend continues as a new Hickory Shad record has been set in Georgia, breaking the old record set last year from the same river. With Spring in the air, bears are moving about - so be bear smart and keep the food away. Spring also means migratory birds are returning, and DEC announced the opening of the Long Island portion of the NYS Birding Trail. NYS DEC also announced the transfer of 34 miles of old rail beds from DOT has been finalized between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid, which marks the start of design and construction of this Tupper Lake to Lake Placid to Sanarac Lake trail corridor for hikers, bikers and snowmobilers. Finally, the renewable green energy fairy tale, something adults should know better than to believe, got another release when Jeckyl and Hyde Basil Seggos and his cadre of zealots released their disadvantaged communities criteria for Climate Justice, and all that is missing is Once Upon a Time. Yet none of what they claim will come to pass, and what is important is what they don't tell you, the truth about electrical energy distribution and delivery. Their climate justice is nothing more than a massive redistribution of wealth, proving the green scheme is only to achieve communism in the name of saving the planet. True Crime All The Time Unsolved

In March of 2012, 18-year-old pre-med student, Colin Gillis, returned to his home in Tupper Lake, New York for spring break. He was excited to see his high school friends and told his parents he felt like it would be a reunion. On March 10th, Colin headed off to a party and he never returned home. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the mysterious disappearance of Colin Gillis. Details emerged about a fight that occurred at the party that night. Colin left a number of voicemails with friends asking for a ride home. But, some people later came forward to say that he had turned down their offers for a ride home. Colin headed off on foot after the party, but instead of turning toward his home, he walked in the opposite direction. A number of people saw him walking on the road in the early morning hours. But, the authorities and Colin's family remain baffled about what happened to him.  You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetime Visit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation information   An Emash Digital production See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was during the years when the Saranacs were divided that Howling Wind, one of the young men of Indian Carry, saw and fell in love with a girl of the family on Tupper Lake. He quickly found a way to tell his liking, and the couple met often in the woods and on the shore. He made bold to row her around the quieter bays, and one moonlight evening he took her to Devil's Rock, or Devil's Pulpit, where he told her the story of the place. This was to the effect that the fiend had paddled, on timbers, by means of his tail, to that rock, and had assembled fish and game about him in large numbers by telling them that he was going to preach to them, instead of which moral procedure he pounced upon and ate all that were within his grasp.
