South Africa has a new player chasing the township fibre broadband market: Wire-Wire Networks has deployed fibre to 15 800 homes in Thembisa (previously Tembisa), a sprawling township in central Gauteng. CEO JP Schmidtke joined the TechCentral Show earlier this week to share exclusive details about the company's growth plans and to talk about the business opportunity for fibre companies in South Africa's vast township economy. Schmidtke said Wire-Wire Networks – like other industry players such as Vumatel, Fibertime and Frogfoot – believes townships present the next big expansion opportunity for fibre network operators, though the business model is rather different to the one used to deploy infrastructure in the suburbs. Wire-Wire is offering uncapped fibre – delivered over a meshed Wi-Fi network from fibre endpoints in each home or dwelling, starting at R5 for an hour of uncapped internet access at 100Mbit/s (limited to a single device). Other price plans, which are all uncapped and offer 100Mbit/s, include: • R9 for a one-day plan that connects one device • R39 for a one-week plan that connects one device • R119 for a one-month plan that connects one device • R449 for a one-month plan that supports eight devices • R1 120 for a one-month plan that supports 12 devices Subscribers can connect anywhere in Thembisa where Wire-Wire has coverage and so are not confined to connecting to the network in the vicinity of their own homes. There are no contracts or connection charges, and Wire-Wire provides a “free-to-use” Wi-Fi router and UPS (designed to keep the internet working even during load shedding and other power outages). The fibre is trenched, not delivered aerially, as it the case in many township deployments. The Gauteng health department on Monday opened a case of impersonating a doctor against a man who identifies himself as “Dr Matthew Lani”. The department said Lani assumed various pseudo medical roles as he falsely presented himself as an employee of the department. After being questioned about his true identity on social media, Lani alleged the name he used on social media was not his real name. His real name was Sanele Zingelwa. Zingelwa, however, is a registered media student. He is a second-year medical intern at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital. The department said Zingelwa has opened a case of identity fraud at Thembisa police station.

Pt 2 - "Just yesterday someone left a two-week-old baby at my doorstep." These are the words of Cynthia Nomsa Dinalane, who opened up her own home to young children and abused women. She currently houses, feeds, educates and provides healthcare for close to 50 women and children within the Thembisa and Kempton Park area at Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare. She tells us more about her. daily work, and the hardships of running such an organisation with no funding or help from anyone.

In this week's Property Magicians Podcast, we talk to Brinny Mphogo who was born in Thembisa and raised in Blairegowrie. In 2012 he started working with his dad in the construction company he founded - ABV Construction.   They focus on residential, retail and commercial buildings and he has been able to grow the business by 300-400% since taking over from his dad.   When he started in the business, all he knew was that he knew how to sell. He focused on getting clients because he knew that his dad knew how to service them.   A lot of the clients gave him a lot of opportunities because they knew his dad. The first project they did was a wall in Randburg and it ended up collapsing on the client's Alpha Romeo. He learned a lot from that experience and started working with his dad on the site to learn about construction so he could learn how long things take and how to get things done well.   They have since become known in the business for being time conscious contractors.   There is a body that regulates contractors, where contractors are graded based on what they can handle.   He explains that when working with contractors, you need to have a good team in place: hier a quantity surveyor who will monitor the contract. The QS will also work closely with the architect. You should also look for a completion certificate, which tells you the number of jobs a contractor has finished.   Brinny is also a real estate investor - he owns land and property in different provinces in South Africa and they all have different uses.   This is another eye opening episode.  Tune in and let us know your comments.

In this week's Property Magicians Podcast episode, we talk to Hloni Lebelo. Hloni was born in Thembisa as the eldest of 3 kids, and is a father of 4 and a husband. He works as a team leader at one of the major banks and is also an entrepreneur and an investor.   He bought his first house in Pretoria when his mom fell ill and she was given a package;  he convinced her to get into property to create a passive income.   They bought land with the aim of building a bottle store but they couldn't get a liquor license so they ended up leasing the land to a mechanic to use as his place of work, so his mom still makes money.   In 2015 he was made a permanent employee but he had bad debt - he was driving a nice sports car, was living beyond his means and had more month than money.   He gave himself 2 years to pay off his bad debt, but everything he was getting was going straight into debt and he knew he can't have money on him that's not allocated for anything, he came up with a strategy to get out of debt and become financially free. In the podcast he shares his debt repayment strategy.   He sold the car and downgraded to a smaller car and in 2017 he bought his first house in Thembisa from a distressed seller. The house was a 2 bed house with a garage and 4 tenants in the backyard. He converted the house into a 3 bedroom house and rented the house out for R4500 after extending it.   He later learned that the owner had renovated the face of the house but structurally the house had many issues and was a money pit. He credits the loss he made on that house with why he stayed in real estate investing.   He eventually sold the house and got a nice profit from the house because of all the work he'd put into fixing it. He then bought a nice house in Kempton Park which had staff quarters and a double garage, which he partitioned; he fixed up the staff quarters and ended up with 6 tenants.   He then bought another house in Kempton Park and his parents asked to move into the house and they gave him their house in Thembisa.    He decided to try investing in Thembisa again - he decided to give people in Thembisa a lifestyle they could get in Midrand and converted the house into 7 units so every unit has its own kitchen and bathroom.   And because of his employee benefits at the bank, his mortgage was affordable and he was able to rent out the property at a lower price than usual, which has helped him keep his tenants longer.   In this podcast Hloni shares how his property income is now more than his salary and how he's changed the area he invests in but kept the strategy - he focused on buying properties that have more space and now has 4 properties and is working on his 5th property.   This is another incredible podcast.   Click play on the audio below to listen to this week's episode.

The state has highlighted how murder accused Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu's modus operandi was similar in several of the cases where she lost loved ones under brutal circumstances. Delivering closing arguments in the Gauteng High Court, prosecutor Riana Williams said the pattern observed was that the Thembisa-based former policewoman was seemingly the last person to see her relatives alive, or she was the first one to notice them missing and report it before them being found dead. Reporting from the courthouse, reporter Naledi Shange updates us on all we need to know about the case, ahead of next week's sentencing. 

Pretoria News editor Piet Rampedi has apologised to his colleagues for the damage his story on SA's so-called “Thembisa 10” babies did to Independent Media's reputation. Two weeks ago, Rampedi broke the “story” of how Gosiame Sithole had “given birth to 10 babies at a Pretoria hospital”. But almost immediately suspicions were raised as health officials in Gauteng said they were unable to verify or confirm the births, which would have been a world record. In the interim, the publication — and its online platform IOL — doubled down on the story, continuing to profess its accuracy and, at one stage, saying that health authorities were part of a cover-up. In a letter to Independent Media's editor-in-chief Aneez Salie, Rampedi apologises for how the story was handled — but also accuses other media houses and journalists of scrutinising the story simply because he wrote it and because it was published by an Independent group title.

After a story was published first by the Piet Rampedi on IOL news, reporting a record-breaking birth of decuplets, social media and the media in general have gone through a rollercoaster of versions of the story. Media expert, William Bird highlights how it may be a case requiring media authorities' intervention. Thembisa Fakude, a researcher at the Al Jazeera Center for Studies says Israel should not be called an apartheid state, because it worse than an apartheid state. Fakude was speaking to Radio Islam about the differences between Apartheid South Africa and Apartheid Israel and why Israel has committed worse atrocities against Palestinians than what South Africans experience under the National Party.

I speak to Witness Mdaka who is the Founder and CEO of Quality Growth International. Witness started off is journey at a young age of 19 when his mother gave him mandate to manage their 1st tenants in Thembisa to manage and own just below 200 tenants. His game changed when he was on honeymoon and was exposed to a different experience of offering accommodation.
