CAN WE FEED OUR PEOPLE? Virus Risks Political and Social Unrest With Hunger Rising... Spike in demand for food pantries... MIAMI: Mile-Long Food Bank Car Lines Between Luxury Hotels... Droves of desperate Americans flood food banks... CHARITY GIVING PHILANTHROPIST: Frank Scurlock is the former CEO of Space Walk Inflatables, an amusement park creator, Christian Philanthropist and former mayoral candidate in New Orleans, LA. TALK TO FRANK ABOUT... 1. Frank is a philanthropist who can talk about the struggle that many non-for-profits are facing during the COVID-19 outbreak. Because people are concerned about their personal finances, they are giving less, which is leaving food pantries and soup kitchens strapped. There is a historic demand on them now, as more and more people's employment have been victim to this global pandemic. 2. People throughout the country are looking for safe, isolated ways to entertain their kids. With parks closed and amusment parks shutting down because of shared surfaces -- like Disney -- parents are looking for ways to keep kids active and happy. Frank believes that traditional demolition is inappropriate as bodies are within them, leaving these poor victims without dignity in death. Frank can discuss ways he believes that might be more feasible and respectful for demolition, which includes a dignified exit for those who are victims trapped within the partially collapsed building. BIO: Frank Scurlock is a native New Orleanian born and raised both in our city’s joyful culture and in his family’s business bringing joy to our city’s backyards with their Space Jumps inflatable fun products. He was born and bred & raised and reared within the context of bringing fun directly to the children and families of New Orleans by putting affordable fun within immediate reach of anyone and giving parents in our city regardless of income the chance to add a little extra affordable magic to their kids’ lives. Today Frank’s children are at the reigns of the family business as the third generation of Scurlocks going to work everyday to bring fun and joy to families around the world. I met Frank Meintjies briefly a few times many years ago in Durban in the mid to late 1980’s as far as we can put it together. He was working, as a communications officer for Diakonia. He joined trade union federation COSATU around the same time. Today Frank is a social activist and community organiser, a traveler and a poet. We spoke via Skype late last year when he was in Vietnam as part of a journey through SE Asia where he is looking for the radical Ubuntu that connects the marginalised around the world. We lost the feed a few times and the sound quality is a bit iffy but it worked out okay. I suggest you wear headphones or listen in the car. We spoke about his travels, his childhood in Pietermaritzburg and his work as an organiser and activist over the years including his brushes with the security services in those dark days. We spend some time chatting about the current state of the trade union movement in SA and Frank reflects on how the movement can become more relevant in the age of populism and declining membership. “Make your default mode one of generosity. It’s a nice way to live, and it’s contagious.”Frank Lipman MDHealth isn't the absence of disease. It's a total state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing.Frank Lipman, MD gets it. And today's conversation reflects this very ethos.A leading trailblazer in Functional and Integrative Medicine, Frank began his training in his native South Africa. Disillusioned with the limitations of conventional medicine, he then spent 18 months working at clinics in the bush. Introduced to local traditional healers (sangomas) kindled an interest in non-traditional healing modalities, catalyzing a passion for combining the best of Western medicine with age-old Eastern techniques of healing, including acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, meditation, and yoga.Today Frank treats patients holistically as the founder and director of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City. In addition, he is a New York Times best-selling author of six books: Total Renewal*, Revive*, The New Health Rules*, 10 Reasons You Feel Old and Get Fat* and Young and Slim for Life*.His newest book is entitled How To Be Well*, a beautifully illustrated primer on improving and strengthening your resilience, functioning, and overall health. This conversation expands the aperture on what is required to live truly well. It's about understanding food as the very building blocks of life. It's about the primacy of sleep and movement. It's about how to mitigate and prevent the invisible assaults of everyday toxins. It's about the importance of carving out time to unwind and reboot. And it's about our innate need to connect with each other in order to awaken and enhance a sense of belonging and meaningBut most of all, this is a conversation about the power we all have to take better control over the quality of our health and lives. One caveat: Frank is not vegan or plant-based. Let's just say we don't exactly see eye to eye on everything. But we are great friends who extend a mutual respect for each other. We agree on the majority of things that contribute to wellness and disease. And we enjoy poking fun at each other over our differences. If we want to advance the conversation on the future of health, there is something to be said for building bridges. Based in North London, Frank Lankaster is a semi-retired academic and community development worker with many years experience in education, working both in the UK and US. Today Frank continues to work as a freelance researcher and writer. In his spare time he enjoys watching football and is a keen Liverpool fan. Tim Connor Hits Trouble by Frank Lankaster (published by Clink Street Publishing RRP $12.99, ebook RRP $4.99 ebook) is available to buy online from March 25th from retailers including Amazon.com and to order from all good bookstores. The book: Emerging from an emotionally exhausting relationship break-up, and with his young daughter still contriving to make him feel as guilty as possible, Tim Connor hopes to regain his equilibrium in his new role as lecturer of Social Sciences at the University of Wash. An exciting new romance is also whetting Tim’s appetite. Meanwhile, the college’s resident alcoholic dinosaur, Henry Jones, is at loggerheads with the Dean of Faculty, Howard Swankie and beset by bickering with his stoutly feminist wife. As tensions mount and the battle lines are drawn, Tim finds himself increasingly pulled in, until one day both Henry and Howard inexplicably go missing leaving Tim to deal with the crisis. Set against the backdrop of the financial crisis of 2008, Frank Lankaster has cleverly drawn upon his considerable experience within the education system and brilliantly captures its inherently political landscape. Tim Connor Hits Trouble skillfully and entertainingly combines the clash of ideas, warring egos, the pressure to perform and the delicate balance between working as an academic and as a teacher to produce an uproarious debut novel.
This is the story of a man who transformed great loss and grief into a way to serve others. Frank Freeman survived the Hyatt skywalk collapse in Kansas City more than 30 years ago. His life partner, Roger Grigsby, standing right next to him at the time of the collapse, did not. Today Frank has created a place for survivors and family members of the deceased to grieve and heal. How can we turn our tragedies into ministries and move from victim to victor?
