Dr. Frank Lipman joins us from New York. _________________________ Resolutions not working? Don't give up on your goals. Get on track with a smarter way: Tiny Habits. _________________________ Bio For Dr. Frank Lipman, health is more than just the absence of disease: it is a total state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing. Dr. Lipman is a widely recognized trailblazer and leader in functional and integrative medicine, and he is a New York Times best-selling author of five books, How to Be Well, The New Health Rules, Young and Slim for Life, Revive and Total Renewal. After his initial medical training in his native South Africa, Lipman spent 18 months working at clinics in the bush. He became familiar with the local traditional healers, called sangomas, which kindled his interest in non-Western healing modalities In 1984, Lipman immigrated to the United States, where he became the chief medical resident at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. While there, he became fascinated by the hospital's addiction clinic, which used acupuncture and Chinese medicine making him even more aware of the potential of implementing non-Western medicine to promote holistic wellbeing. He began studying nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, functional medicine, biofeedback, meditation, and yoga. Lipman founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in 1992, where he combines the best of Western medicine and cutting edge nutritional science with age-old healing techniques from the East. As his patient, chef Seamus Mullen, told The New York Times, “If antibiotics are right, he'll try it. If it's an anti-inflammatory diet, he'll do that. He's looking at the body as a system rather than looking at isolated things.” ______________________________ For More on Dr. Frank Lipman Website Better Sleep, Better You: Your No-Stress Guide for Getting the Sleep You Need and the Life You Want The New Rules of Aging Well: A Simple Program for Immune Resilience, Strength, and Vitality _______________________________ Mentioned in this Episode Oura Ring _______________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like Breaking the Age Code – Dr. Becca Levy Take Charge of Your Well-Being – John La Puma, MD The Mind-Body Connection and The Rabbit Effect – Kelli Harding Tiny Habits Can Lead to Big Changes – BJ Fogg ________________________________ Wise Quotes On What Affects Sleep "It's also important to understand with sleep, it's not only about what you do at night before you go to sleep, it's also about what happens during the day that's going to affect your sleep. And it's important to realize it's one of the important pillars of health.  We talk about diet, exercise, and stress, but sleep is up there. And the last thing I'd like to say, especially with your audience and with our age group, alcohol is not your friend. It's not your friend with anything, but particularly when it comes to sleep. A lot of people drink alcohol because it sort of calms them down and they think it makes them fall asleep, but it really disrupts your sleep." On Melatonin "We've always thought of melatonin as something for sleep. But lately I've been exploring a lot of the research using or seeing melatonin as one of the primary anti-aging hormones. So as we get older, our melatonin levels decrease, and that may be why we find it harder to sleep, but melatonin doesn't just affect your sleep. Melatonin affects your immune system, your heart, it affects  metabolism, sugar control and your weight.

If they can start coaching them with meditation or breathing exercises…just trying to teach people to get out of their heads…even teaching clients breathing techniques can be very helpful.”  “...that's sort of where medicine is heading where people will be able to get daily, every minute, some type of information about how they're doing, whether it's their heart rate variability, their heart rate, their blood glucose, how are they sleeping…we're getting to a place where we'll be able to get a lot of this information from wearables.”    Dr. Frank Lipman received his initial medical training in South Africa and emigrated to the United States in 1984. In this episode with Frank Lipman, MD, a pioneer & internationally recognized expert in the fields of Integrative & Functional Medicine, you will learn the keys to living a longer, healthier sleep which often starts with focusing on sleep. In his book Better Sleep, Better You, Dr. Lipman points out that getting quality sleep is literally a matter of life & death. He also points out: 1) 70% of people have sleep issues 2) Sleep is your primary rhythm and most of us are out of rhythm 3) All roads lead to and from sleep. You will learn the vital roles that both Melatonin and Cortisol play at the center of our sleep-wake "choreography" as he puts it. Why Small Stressors Can Actually Be Good For Us | This episode is sponsored by UqoraWe know that chronic, long-term stress can wreak havoc on our health. However, short-term and/or mild stressors can have the exact opposite effect. For instance, when you practice resistance training by lifting heavy weights and inflicting damage on your muscles, your body responds by repairing the damaged fibers, thus creating bigger and stronger muscles. This is called hormesis, a phenomenon that demonstrates the beneficial effects of low-level stressors. A similar process called xenohormesis also occurs in plants, making them stronger and richer in phytochemicals that are good for us. Dr. Hyman recently spoke about these topics in his conversations with Ben Greenfield and Dr. Frank Lipman.Ben Greenfield is a human performance consultant, speaker, and New York Times bestselling author of 13 books, including the wildly popular titles, Beyond Training and Boundless. A former collegiate tennis, water polo, and volleyball player, as well as a bodybuilder, 13-time Ironman triathlete, and professional obstacle course racer, Ben has been voted by the NSCA as America’s top Personal Trainer and by Greatist as one of the top 100 Most Influential People In Health and Fitness. Ben hosts the highly popular fitness, nutrition, and wellness website bengreenfieldfitness.com, a site with over a million monthly visitors, featuring articles, podcasts, and product reviews. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a widely-diagnosed, yet often misunderstood condition that affects approximately 60 million Americans. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain, discomfort, and changes in bowel habits, and is diagnosed when IBD or celiac disease have been ruled out. In other words, IBS is a “diagnosis of exclusion.” The range of symptoms, poorly defined pathogenesis, and functional nature of IBS make it a notoriously difficult disorder to treat. Because there is no widely recognized cause of IBS in the mainstream medical community, standard treatment is based primarily on symptom suppression and management. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Soyona Rafatjah, a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Medical Director and Co-Founder of PrimeHealth in Denver, CO. They discuss the difference between the conventional medicine approach versus the Functional Medicine approach when it comes to testing and treatment options for IBS. They also talk about the importance of identifying food intolerances, and the benefits of a low-FODMAP diet which can significantly reduce the severity of IBS symptoms. For Dr. After his initial medical training in his native South Africa, Dr. Lipman spent 18 months working at clinics in the bush. He became familiar with the local traditional healers, called sangomas, which kindled his interest in non-Western healing modalities In 1984, Dr. Lipman immigrated to the United States, where he became the chief medical resident at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. While there, he became fascinated by the hospital’s addiction clinic, which used acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat people suffering from heroin and crack addiction. Seeing the way these patients responded so positively to acupuncture made him even more aware of the potential of implementing non-Western medicine to promote holistic wellbeing. As a medical student, he was taught to focus on the disease rather than the patient, and now as a doctor he found himself treating symptoms rather than the root causes of illness. Frustrated by the constraints of his training, and the limitations in helping his patients regain true health, he began a journey of discovery to search for the path to meaningful long-term health and wellness. He began studying nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, functional medicine, biofeedback, meditation, and yoga. Dr. Lipman founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in 1992, where he combines the best of Western medicine and cutting edge nutritional science with age-old healing techniques from the East. As his patient chef Seamus Mullen told The New York Times, “If antibiotics are right, he’ll try it. If it’s an anti-inflammatory diet, he’ll do that. He’s looking at the body as a system rather than looking at isolated things.” In addition to his practice, Dr. Lipman is the creator of Be Well, an expanding lifestyle wellness brand he founded in 2010 to help people create, sustain and lead healthier lives. He is also the instructor of the mbg Video Course, 14-Day Detox.

“Make your default mode one of generosity. It’s a nice way to live, and it’s contagious.”Frank Lipman MDHealth isn't the absence of disease. It's a total state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing.Frank Lipman, MD gets it. And today's conversation reflects this very ethos.A leading trailblazer in Functional and Integrative Medicine, Frank began his training in his native South Africa. Disillusioned with the limitations of conventional medicine, he then spent 18 months working at clinics in the bush. Introduced to local traditional healers (sangomas) kindled an interest in non-traditional healing modalities, catalyzing a passion for combining the best of Western medicine with age-old Eastern techniques of healing, including acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, meditation, and yoga.Today Frank treats patients holistically as the founder and director of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City. In addition, he is a New York Times best-selling author of six books: Total Renewal*, Revive*, The New Health Rules*, 10 Reasons You Feel Old and Get Fat* and Young and Slim for Life*.His newest book is entitled How To Be Well*, a beautifully illustrated primer on improving and strengthening your resilience, functioning, and overall health. This conversation expands the aperture on what is required to live truly well. It's about understanding food as the very building blocks of life. It's about the primacy of sleep and movement. It's about how to mitigate and prevent the invisible assaults of everyday toxins. It's about the importance of carving out time to unwind and reboot. And it's about our innate need to connect with each other in order to awaken and enhance a sense of belonging and meaningBut most of all, this is a conversation about the power we all have to take better control over the quality of our health and lives. One caveat: Frank is not vegan or plant-based. Let's just say we don't exactly see eye to eye on everything. But we are great friends who extend a mutual respect for each other. We agree on the majority of things that contribute to wellness and disease. And we enjoy poking fun at each other over our differences. If we want to advance the conversation on the future of health, there is something to be said for building bridges. Dr. Frank Lipman and mbg go way back—if you dive into the mindbodygreen archives, you'll see his contributions started in 2010, just a year after we launched the site. Aside from being my personal doctor, Dr. Lipman is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts on healthy detox and is a pioneer of the holistic, East-meets-West functional medicine movement. He noticed early on that Western medicine was ideal for helping acute medical events like heart attacks and broken bones, but it didn't solve chronic illnesses like insomnia, headaches, and indigestion. These tricky conditions called for alternative holistic and integrative techniques, which proved to be more effective. His philosophy is simple: In practice, he harnesses the healing powers of ancient traditions like Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and more, in the context of his Western medicine training. His work has shaped the way the wellness community heals themselves, encouraging his patients and followers to support their detox pathways and mental health while eschewing unsustainable crash diets. To that end, Dr. Lipman has incited significant shifts in the wellness landscape. He is the founder and director of the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, a functional medicine mecca in New York City where he practices. He's also the creator of Be Well, a lifestyle wellness brand that offers supplements, detoxes, and cleanses to help people look and feel their best. "Detox done properly is an entry point to healthy living. It's not everything, but it's an entry point," Dr. Lipman said on the show. Amen! In our 20th episode, Dr. Lipman shares his fascinating background and how he came to be one of the leading functional medicine doctors in America. Turns out it had a lot to do with early exposure to energetic healers in hospitals during Apartheid, getting a green card in New York City by working in the Bronx, pursuing apprenticeships at holistic wellness centers, and following his then-unpopular vision of a holistic medical practice. I asked him hard questions about the future of wellness and the root cause of most health issues today, which he maintains are stress, poor diet, and restless sleep. Dr. Lipman gives his best tips for better shut-eye, what is wrong with "wellness" today, and a look into the future of well-being. This ethos followed him into his initial training as a doctor in South Africa. In his early work in a Soweto hospital, he was exposed to non-traditional healers who were able to accomplish what a more traditional approach to medicine struggled with.He then emigrated to the United States in 1984, where he worked in the South Bronx, becoming Chief Medical Resident at Lincoln Hospital at the height of the crack epidemic. There, again, Lipman, began to see the limitations of traditional medicine in treating addiction, and embraced complimentary modalities. He deepened his study of nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, functional medicine, biofeedback, meditation, and yoga and began to form a more integrated approach to the practice of medicine and wellbeing.Frank eventually founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in 1992, combining cutting-edge nutritional science with age-old healing techniques from the East. In a quest to bring this unique approach to the masses, he then founded BE WELL, based on the belief that everyone should have a fundamental right to be healthy.Frank lives according to the philosophy of Ubuntu, a Xhosa word that serves as the spiritual foundation of African societies and articulates a basic understanding, caring, respect, and compassion for others. We need more doctors in the world like Dr. Frank Lipman.Western medicine is astounding when it comes to treating acute, isolated conditions — a catastrophic injury, an arterial blockage or a serious infection, for example. But how does it fare when it comes to preventing disease, particularly chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and countless other conditions sweeping the globe like a modern day plague? Well, not so well. On this I think we can all agree. On that note, when was the last time your doctor focused his inquiry on things like increasing energy levels and general vitality, elevating mood, sustaining optimal body weight, or enhancing mental acuity and focus? Not recently I would imagine, if ever. He or she might advise you to reduce the stress in your life, “eat better” and/or “start taking care of yourself” — but these proclamations are rarely combined with an actual specific protocol to implement. And that, my friends is a shame.Dr. Lipman is working to break this paradigm. Early in his medical career, he began to see that the polarization between western modalities and other healing philosophies merely negated positive attributes of both. He began to see that true healing lay in a blend between the two. He now practices his unique method of what he calls “Good Medicine”, which merges the best of the west with many traditions more eastern or alternative in origin — a holistic form of medicine that is truly unique and integrative in its approach to patients. It's for this reason he has become the go-to, in-demand doctor for the celebrated — people like Donna Karan, Kevin Bacon, Gwenyth Paltrow, Peter Sarsgaard & Maggie Gyllenhaal. If pharmaceuticals are truly in order to rectify an acute medical issue, he is happy to prescribe. But disease management isn't what gets him out of bed every morning excited about life. Instead, it's taking the time to evaluate each patient as a complex web of interdependent systems, with a keen lens focused on disease prevention. The idea is to optimize the quality of his patients' lives through implementing techniques such as acupuncture; Chinese, herbal & functional medicine; nutrition; biofeedback; meditation; and yoga. When was the last time your doctor prescribed you to go to yoga? It's never happened to me, and I live in LA.In short, Dr. Lipman's ultimate goal for all his patients is simple: sustained, long-term, optimal wellness.Sustained, long-term, optimal wellness. If you know me, then you know I'm all about this subject. So it was an honor and a treat to sit down with Dr. Lipman in his office at Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in the Flatiron District of Manhattan — with its soothing meditation retreat / yoga studio vibe — where he generously offered up his perspective on medicine & the medical profession, nutrition & food allergies, and the types of things we can and should all focus on more intently if we want to maximize our “wellness” in the truest sense of this all-too often over-hyped word.I hope you enjoy the enlightening conversation. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think. And don't forget to give Tyler — my trusty podcast producer and stepson — a nice shoutout for all his hard work not just putting today's show together, but for all his amazing original music compositions that accompany the interview. Thanks Ty!SHOW NOTESConnect With Dr. Frank Lipman: Website | Facebook | Twitter | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
