We're getting into the weeds of US industrial this week, discussing a record that captures a very specific early 90s moment, along with some formal experimentation in D.D.T.'s Discomedia, and one which consolidates the strength and range of cyberpunk stalwarts Cyanotic, The Trigger Effect. We're also looking over the solid lineup and new location for this year's Subtance Festival.

Stir of Echoes was David Koepp's second directorial venture following the success of his 1996 thriller The Trigger Effect. Adapted from a lesser-known work by genre legend Richard Matheson, the film hit at a weird and perhaps unfortunate time. Just 6 years off his massive breakthrough penning Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (a film he wrote when he was not yet 30 years old), Koepp was riding high in the industry. But Stir of Echoes was a low-key ghost story thriller involving a boy who can see and talk to dead people, and, suffice to say, a lot of that oxygen had been sucked up when it arrived more than a month after the runaway hit The Sixth Sense. Still, it was a modest, fairly low-budget success that enjoyed critical admiration for the most part, especially in the form of Kevin Bacon's well-tuned performance - one that could have easily gone off the rails in the hands of a different actor. But is Stir of Echoes actually good? Is it scary?? We invited horror journalist Mary Beth McAndrews to talk to us about her experiences with the film and ask those very questions. You can learn more about her here: https://www.mbmcandrews.com/

That's right, it's time to step through that scary door into the twilight zone of 1996 thriller THE TRIGGER EFFECT, screenwriter David Koepp's feature directorial debut and an altogether overlooked entry in the Amblin canon.  Joining Andy and Josh on their journey is newly-minted three-timer Dan Kelly (@DeekingAround), self-proclaimed Koepp-head and general appreciator of this kind of conceptual, slimline blockbusting. Together they talk about the film's conception, the cast of Amblin all-stars and tonal reference points that range from the understandable (Spielberg!) to the unexpected (Shyamalan?). The Mike's find them stuck in the middle of a power and phone outage in mid 90's suburbia...and folks are going CRAZY!!!!!! Mike Field and Mike Butler are talking about the 1996 David Koepp film, Trigger Effect, starring Kyle MacLachlan, Elisabeth Shue, and Dermot Mulroney. The Mikes discuss how this film is Koepp's directorial debut, the weakness in the character of Matt, wanting more of Durmot Mulroney's character and how underwritten Shue's character, Annie, is. Butler and Field also talk about how Butler finds it too absurd that everything goes to Hollywood levels of crazy so fast during a power outage, and the use of color and long shots used to establish the start of the film. So grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits at the front and rear of the auditorium, and settle down for (https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com/).

In this first episode we are very excited to welcome James Burke, who has been called “one of the most intriguing minds in the world". In the late 1970’s he created a 10 part documentary series called Connections, which tells many stories from the history of science and technology and shows how everything really is incredibly connected, which was the starting point for the first half of this really interesting and wide ranging conversation recorded in a cafe in London a few weeks ago. Part 2 of the same conversation will be shared as a follow up called The Age of Abundance in the next episode. To see episode one (The Trigger Effect) of the Connections series discussed in this podcast please see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XetplHcM7aQ And to find out more about James Burke's latest project the Knowledge Web please see here: https://k-web.org/

In this episode, I talk with Dean Trumbley and Kent Michie, hosts of Bushnell’s Trigger Effect TV (triggereffect.tv).  The show is on a number of places including The Sportsman channel, My Outdoor TV (myoutdoortv.com) and you can access prior season’s on their website.  We discuss a number of items ranging from how the show came about, Dean and Kent’s outdoor past, and something we are all passionate about which is stopping hunters from attacking other hunters. Dean and Kent made an awesome video about this called Hunting – The Big Picture (Hunting - The Big Picture). It was fantastic to talk with fellow outdoorsmen who believe like I do that without a change in how some hunters feel that they are entitled to put their views onto others, hunting and fishing could be in trouble for future generations. We also spend time discussing how Dean and Kent run their show and that they do a lot of filming for each other, self-filming and maybe occasionally take a cameraperson with them. This keeps the hunt more intimate without having to have a large number of people go on trips with them. We also discuss the fantastic sponsors that are what make the show possible. This includes Bushnell (bushnell.com), Savage Arms(savagearms.com), Federal Premium(federalpremium.com), Primos(primos.com),  Tactacam(tactacam.com), and the list goes on. During their recent trip to the Shot Show (an industry event in Las Vegas), Dean and Kent were able to visit with some of their sponsors to see new products. Dean and Kent made some great videos on Shot Show products including an awesome Savage Model 212 bolt action Turkey gun (https://youtu.be/PtDjaNh1uZI), and if you are a predator hunter, the new Primo’s DogNet call (https://youtu.be/j6fEogVm-NM
