In a new Fox interview Trump just declared American citizens and politicians he disagrees with “the enemy within” that the US Military should go after to root out on or after Election Day. Michael Popok does a deep dive into the Posse Comitatus laws passed after the civil war to prevent the use of US troops against Americans on US soil and why it may not be strong enough to protect us in the hands of the MAGA SCOTUS this time aground. Independent investigative journalism, broadcasting, trouble-making and muckraking with Brad Friedman of BradBlog.com
This week, Donald Trump raged at a Fox News poll finding behind, and lashed out at Fox for featuring a guest who dared criticize him. Trump regularly unloads on Fox when it doesn't follow his script, which is remarkable, given that Fox is usually committed to deceiving its viewers on his behalf. Both Trump and Fox draw on a long history, in which grift and scams have been deeply intertwined with the American right for over a half century. We talked to journalist Joe Conason, author of a new book called: “The Longest Con: How Grifters, Swindlers and Frauds Hijacked American Conservatism,” about the place of the tortured Trump-Fox relationship in that long, ugly story. CNN's chief media correspondent Brian Stelter joins The Post to discuss his book "Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News, and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth” and how Fox became deeply aligned with Donald Trump over the course of his presidency.
Join Michael Zeldin for Part II of his interview with CNN anchor and media analyst Brian Stelter on his best-seller, HOAX: Donald Trump, Fox News, and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth. Even before the Trump administration, communicators have long been intrigued by the curious friendship forged by conservative commentators with conservatives in government. But this was the first administration where the friendship is so obvious in its mutual dependence and co-existence. In this no-holds-barred discussion, Stelter reveals the surprising genesis of this strange friendship, how it is impacting the relationship, and how Fox News continues to chip away at our concept of Truth. Listen to Part I here. Guest Brian Stelter Chief Media Correspondent and Anchor of Reliable Sources Brian Stelter is the anchor of “Reliable Sources,” which examines the week's top media stories every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. ET on CNN/U.S, and the chief media correspondent for CNN Worldwide. Over the course of two years writing the book, Stelter spoke with over 250 current and former Fox insiders in an effort to understand the inner workings of Rupert Murdoch's multibillion-dollar media empire. In 2013, he published The New York Times best-selling book, “Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV”, about the competitive world of morning news shows. He is a consulting producer on Apple's drama “The Morning Show,” which is inspired by his book. In 2020, Stelter executive produced the HBO Documentary, “After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News,” directed by Andrew Rossi, who featured Stelter in his 2011 documentary, “Page One: Inside the New York Times.” Stelter was also named to Forbes Magazine's “30 Under 30: Media” for three consecutive years, and Fortune Magazine's “40 Under 40: Media & Entertainment.” In January 2004, while he was a freshman at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, Stelter created TV Newser, a blog dedicated to coverage of the television news industry. Brian Stelter is the anchor of “Reliable Sources,” which examines the week's top media stories every Sunday at 11:00am ET on CNN. He's also the network's Chief Media Correspondent. His new book, Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News, and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth, tells the twisted story of the relationship between Donald Trump and Fox News. The internet changed how we interacted with the news. “It made us all our own publishers.” There's an obvious benefit to a diverse ecosystem of thought, and bad-faith actors playing to extremes take advantage of it. Trump and his media outlets are then able to go out and tell a powerful, compelling story about the “deep state” and white victimhood, but in the end, “it doesn't add up.” ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

It is impossible to tell the story of President Trump's rise to power without understanding his relationship with Fox News. Together they form one of modern America's most defining duos, argues CNN's chief media correspondent Brian Stelter, who documents their symbiotic dance his new book, Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth. Through countless interviews with sources at various of levels of power inside Fox, Stelter reveals how the wildly popular cable channel has subordinated its journalistic integrity to Trump's political interests, while setting the daily agenda for his administration. "Every day's a new episode," Stelter told Mother Jones Editor-in-Chief Clara Jeffery, during a recent livestream event hosted by the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. "Certainly Fox programs his presidency that way." The title of Stelter's book was inspired back-to-back use of the word "hoax" by Trump and Hannity, to describe the emerging coronavirus crisis in the U.S. Both Trump and Fox downplayed the threat at the outset, a deadly error for which they face dual culpability (but zero accountability from Fox brass)—a travesty made all the more apparent following the recent release of Bob Woodward's tapes. This conversation between Brian Stelter and Clara Jeffery is the centerpiece of an episode that explores the toxic feedback loop deepening the crisis in American journalism and democracy.
CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter has watched with amazement and alarm as the relationship between Donald Trump and Fox News has grown ever more intertwined and interdependent. Fox primetime hosts float conspiracy theories and unsubstantiated claims, and Trump tweets and repeats them to the world. Stelter, who anchors the CNN show Reliable Sources, explores this unprecedented relationship in his new book, Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News, and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth. Stelter discusses how Trump has spurned his own briefings in favor of whatever he hears on Fox News and, as the Washington Post writes, "expose[s] a collusion that threatens the pillars of our democracy."
To CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter, President Trump’s ongoing, mutually-reinforcing alliance with Fox News gained permanent traction in January 2017. That was when Trump, enraged over CNN’s coverage of his sparse inauguration crowd, found refuge in sympathetic reporting from Fox News. Stelter says from that point on, the network became Trump’s “humiliation-free zone” and his chief source of information. As detailed in Stelter’s new book “Hoax,” it also marked the start of an alliance in which Trump and Fox worked together to cast the rest of American media as “fake.” Stelter joins us to talk about what he uncovered about the evolution and impact of the Trump-Fox partnership.
The dividing line between Fox News Channel and Donald Trump has become blurred, with each increasingly relying on the other to accomplish their goals. Axios Re:Cap speaks with Brian Stelter, the CNN media critic and author of a new book about FNC's evolution, its internal struggles, and how hosts like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson influence national policy. Psychiatrist and author ROBERT JAY LIFTON has spent a lifetime not turning away from our dark side: writing about Hiroshima survivors, Nazi doctors, and the Japanese cult that released sarin gas in Tokyo’s subways. Now 93, he finds the darkness closer to home. He wrote the foreword to The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Experts Assess a President, and his latest book is LOSING REALITY: On Cults, Cultism, and the Mindset of Political and Religious Zealotry. How can Trump’s alternative facts compete with the harsh realities of this moment?
On today's podcast we have an exclusive hour-long interview with best-selling author Ann Coulter about her recent criticisms of President Trump and she holds nothing back. Coulter explains why she went on her late-night Twitter rant against Trump and tees off on the President as an insecure narcissist and man-child for his attacks on former Attorney General and current Alabama Senate candidate Jeff Sessions. But she wasn't done there. We get into CNN, MSNBC and even Fox News, the President's love affair with the media, she blames Trump for the Mueller investigation, defends White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany from an attack by Jonah Goldberg, and a lot more. We cover a lot of ground and no one - Democrat, Republican, or other - is spared.
Teresa Lundy, a communications strategist and principle at TML Communications, joined hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas to talk about Joe Biden lowering his campaign to the president’s level despite promises to keep it classy, and how the Democratic Party can’t seem to settle on a message. And honestly, at this point, maybe voters would settle for basic communications competence and just one campaign event without honking geese, dropped cue cards and other mistakes. Basic lack of follow through, from digital communication to policy proposals, is dogging the Democrats, again. Donald Trump’s campaign team, on the other hand, might not have a lot of positive information to communicate, but they sure do have money to spend, and that always helps. Trump’s also the only candidate trying to reach the Latino community in the US, which is disappointing a lot of groups, she reports. The three also broke down changes in pandemic and post-pandemic voting. Margaret Kimberly, editor and senior columnist at Black Agenda Report and author of the book "Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents," discussed former President Barack Obama’s commencement speech over the weekend, and his obvious disdain for black people. Saint Obama has always tried to speak over black people to address his white supporters, she argues. The genuine racism Obama faced as well as our overall inability to critique political power and our political system has protected his administration from a real reckoning. Callers argued about Obama’s toxicity, the history of black voting and labor and the complexities of assessing a black president in a white country. The Misfits also broke down Trump’s hydroxychloroquine bombshell, his latest ultimatum to the WHO, accusations of a judicial double standard when it comes to the Obama administration, the latest drama at the State Department, the Trump-Fox feud and the Biden-Trump ad battle.
Plus... A new generation of White House reporters holding power to account; when TV shows become hazardous to public health; and Brian Stelter's message that "it's okay to not be okay." Piers Morgan, Juliette Kayyem, Philip Bump, Kaitlan Collins, Francesca Chambers, Adam Mosseri and Susan Wojcicki join Stelter.

Recapping all of Trump's most embarrassing moments in just 2019 is hard to squeeze into an hour-long show, but for the holidays we decided to try. First, Trump struggles to form coherent sentences during his border visit. Then, we revisit Trump's origin story, which of course turned out to be a complete lie. Chinese officials then laugh in Trump's face as his advisors need to explain important policy terms to him in front of the press. We review the origins of the Trump-Fox news feud, which began with hosts admitting the President's poll numbers weren't looking all that great. Finally, when asked about the Bible, Trump's answer reveals his less-than-holy understanding of religion.Guest: Brett Erlich See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Most people understand the economy through the news—how it’s doing, what the new laws are, and what experts predict for the future. For better or for worse, that means journalists largely dictate our common knowledge of economics issues. What’s the media’s responsibility as they cover the economy? Media Matters senior fellow Matt Gertz joins Steph and Paul to ponder the question: does economics have a media problem? Matt Gertz is a senior fellow at Media Matters, a progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Matt’s work focuses on the relationship between Fox News and the Trump administration, news coverage of politics and elections, and media ethics. His writing on the Trump-Fox feedback loop has appeared in The Daily Beast, HuffPost, and Politico Magazine, and he has discussed his analysis on MSNBC, NPR, and Comedy Central. Attorney General William Barr on Sunday released the "principal conclusions" of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's completed Russia probe in a bombshell four-page letter to Capitol Hill lawmakers, which stated definitively that Mueller did not establish evidence that President Trump's team or any associates of the Trump campaign had conspired with Russia to sway the 2016 election -- "despite multiple offers from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign." Zack, Jenn, and Alex talk about Trump’s late-night tweet about the alleged persecution of white South African farmers. They explain what’s actually happening in South Africa, how Trump’s take on the situation has its roots in an international white nationalist movement, and how Fox News is helping turn these extreme ideas into actual US foreign policy. On Elsewhere, they discuss the recent revelation that Iran has been engaging in a Russia-style disinformation campaign on social media — and why the US can’t seem to fight back against foreign meddling in its politics. Alex recalls his old AOL screen name, Zack reveals a little too much about what the word “cyber” means to him, and Jenn leavens a dark episode with talk of cute cats and dogs. References: Jenn’s piece on President Trump’s South Africa tweet, which we reference throughout the episode. Jenn mentioned that experts contest this narrative. Here are several pieces from Quartz, the New Statesman, and the BBC that dig into that idea further. If you’d like to read more about apartheid in South Africa, this Smithsonian piece is a good place to start. We quoted this tweet from President Trump and this tweet from the South African government, and mentioned this Ann Coulter tweet. Jenn touched on the group that pushes this narrative about white South African farmers under attack, but you can read more about them in this HuffPost piece. More background on Charleston, South Carolina, shooter Dylann Roof. Zack gave a shout-out to Carlos Maza’s Strikethrough video about white supremacists and Tucker Carlson. Jenn mentioned this Guardian piece walking through the journey this narrative took from South Africa to the far right. For Elsewhere, we played a clip from this interview with John Bolton. Here’s a deeper dive into the fake Iranian and Russian accounts. Jenn gave a specific example of a fake Iranian account calling out a Republican candidate for Holocaust denial. For more on the Iranian accounts impersonating Bernie Bros, this Daily Beast piece is a good resource. Alex mentioned Stuxnet, and the hacking of both a dam and JP Morgan. Alex also said that various officials feel they have no real directive from the president on cyber initiatives. Here’s more on that. If you want to know a little more about how vulnerable to cyber threats we really are, Alex recommends this piece. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
