This will require a huge increase in the production of electrical transformers, along with more power plants and transmission lines to produce and deliver energy. This overhaul must include upgrading local grid distribution at the roughly 3,000 electric utilities across the country—the wires, poles and transformers that line our streets. There are 60 million to 80 million distribution transformers in neighborhoods, designed for existing loads. Around one million new ones are sold annually, two-thirds of which replace aged-out transformers. That replacement rate isn't close to meeting the EPA's dreams. Millions more—and heavier—transformers will be needed to handle higher power levels and more frequent use, even if many EVs are charged overnight. This will also require replacing many of the existing utility poles to handle new transformers' extra weight.” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/can-we-power-the-epas-ev-fantasy-electrical-grid-energy-vehicles-a786d535?mod=opinion_lead_pos6 6:05pm- Josh Christenson and David Thompson of The New York Post writes: “Attorneys for first son Hunter Biden fought Wednesday to dismiss a federal indictment out of Los Angeles charging that he evaded $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019 — but still had to acknowledge their client did ‘clearly stupid things.' Don starts the show by reflecting upon former President Obama's recent interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. As Republicans in state legislatures across the country are passing bills which restrict voting rights, Obama expressed concern about the state of American democracy and about how Republican senators are willing to follow Trump to save their careers with the harrowing statement: the path towards an undemocratic America “is not going to happen in just one bang. It happens in a series of steps.”   Former Senior Adviser to President Obama Valerie Jarrett joins Don to discuss the former president's statements and the importance of President Biden's legislation making it through Congress. Host of the podcast The Axe Files, David Axelrod and Former Chief Strategist for President George W. Bush Matthew Dowd also join to add context to Obama's statements and to analyze Rep. Liz Cheney's comments on Trump and the GOP.  West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin wrote an op-ed in the Charleston Gazette-Mail on his opposition to the For The People Act, a bill intended to expand voting rights, and his opposition to killing the filibuster. New York's Rep. Mondaire Jones joins to discuss the bipartisan nature of voting rights and why Manchin may as well have called his op-ed “Why I'll Vote to Preserve Jim Crow.”  Obama and Cooper also discussed on how he told the story of race in America as president. Political Commentator Bakari Sellers joins to explain why Obama wasn't forceful enough on the issue of race when he was in office, and Political Commentator and former member of the Obama administration Ashley Allison puts Obama's decisions on speaking about race in perspective.  Later, Adam Jentleson, the former Deputy Chief of Staff to Sen. Harry Reid, joins to discuss how the filibuster was used in the past to exclusively block civil rights bills and how it continues to prevent progressive change.  Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson twisted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words to deny systemic racism and critical race theory. Professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin Peniel Joseph joins to explain why Johnson misrepresented Dr. King and to discuss how white supremacy is still found in some American tradition.  At least 17 people were killed in mass shootings and gun violence across the country this weekend, and this year has seen a 23% incense in deaths from gun violence. National Correspondent Ryan Young reports.  Finally, the youngest survivors of the mass school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida are graduating this year. CNN's Kate Bolduan brings a report that reflects on how two graduating seniors fought to stop gun violence during their time in school, and how they plan on taking their experiences with them as they enter their next chapter.  To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

Census data supports communities Government and businesses rely on census data to provide the necessary services that make healthy and vibrant communities possible. The data reveals how many grocery stores, pharmacies, hospitals, or schools are needed, and even influence public transportation routes and budgets. An accurate and fair count will ensure that adequate resources are allocated. Undercounting and the citizenship question Asking whether the census participant is a citizen could decrease the count because people are afraid that it would undermine their safety and privacy. Undercounting hurts all communities because it will imply that they need fewer resources. The U.S. Conference of Mayors, a bipartisan body of mayors, has joined a lawsuit to take the question off the census. The basis for political power Political redistricting happens as a result of significant demographic shifts. After the 2010 census, 18 states changed their number of congressional seats and Electoral College votes, starting with the 2012 elections. Texas gained four seats, and Florida gained two. Another 6 states gained on seat each, while 8 states lost one seat, and New York and Ohio each lost two. Find out more: Ashley Allison is the Executive Vice President of Campaigns and Programs at The Leadership Conference, the nation’s premier civil and human rights coalition. We talk as a nation about the imperative of voting but probably not enough about the challenges voters are facing now, just days before the mid-term elections. Ashley Allison, Executive Vice President of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, talks to Power Station about the All Voting is Local Campaign, which is building support for, and tackling systemic barriers to, voting in Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Arizona. This campaign operates as a collaborative with national partners including the ACLU and the American Constitution Society, and local nonprofit partners in communities directly impacted by systemic barriers. Their collective advocacy, litigation, organizing and where possible, partnership with supervisors of elections, has increased the numbers of poll workers and bilingual translators, improved accessibility to voting sites in communities of color and by disabled people. As Ashley explains, this Campaign is one of many embraced by The Leadership Conference, a voice for over 200 powerhouse coalition members, including labor unions, civil rights and LGBTQ organizations. She shares her own journey in social change advocacy, informed by her childhood in Youngstown, Ohio, her experiences as a young teacher in Bed-Study, Brooklyn, and as a lawyer, serving in the Obama Administration's Office of Public Engagement. Ashley is strategic, passionate and inspiring. She is also inspired by others, including Desmond Meade, President of The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, a leaders on felon disenfranchisement issues, whose work is making a national impact.
