This entire conversation could be a life coach session. I sat down with Vanessa Garcia, Chief Impact Officer at Nike, at the Paralympic Games, and I feel truly honored to share her immense amount of knowledge and advice with the Hurdler community. Vanessa started out as a human rights lawyer before pivoting to Nike and we talk about her non-traditional career path while keeping her mission of advocating for women and girls at the center of her journey. She sheds light on how her upbringing helps to inform how she makes decisions, where she gets her confidence from, and gets real about navigating the nerves that come with the nature of her role at Nike and what she does to "train for her job like an athlete." Mommy wine culture is pervasive and drinking while parenting has been normalized in recent years. For many people, having a drink at night can feel like a reward for a hard day of parenting. Some parents find their alcohol consumption actually increases after kids as a way to not only reward themselves, but to reconnect with their relaxed and carefree past. There is a debate about how mom wine culture could be a troubling trend and is proof that the pressures of modern parenting are simply too much.On the podcast to share her story is Vanessa Garcia. Karen got to know Vanessa at The Family Room in Toluca Lake. She took Parent & Me with her daughter Scarlett, graduated and just recently aged-out of Toddler & Me. Vanessa, Nicole, and Jackie, talk about how we've been getting women wrong for so many years. They also talk about the movement that's starting around the oh-so-sexy topic of menopause, which will hopefully set things right.

Vanessa Garcia wrote the story of rum. Her play, the Amparo Experience, told the true tale of the Cuban family behind the real Havana Club Rum — and it became the hottest theater ticket in Miami, selling out show after show for six months. Vanessa manages to grab people's attention with her varied work: plays, journalism, fiction, non-fiction and podcasts. Even the pandemic couldn't stop her. She wrote a radio play and another performed virtually, “Jenna and the Whale,” with my buddy Jake Cline. And she's a voice for Cuban artists and dissidents on the island that the government tries to silence. We talk to her about her newest work, “What the Bread Says,” a children's book about how an entire country's story can be told through its bread. Plus an upcoming play that also involves food with the poet Richard Blanco. Plus! An update on Carlos' Planchita and Amy climbs her backyard tree like an avocado monkey. On July 11th of last year protests broke out all over Cuba over several issues, ranging from lack of food and medical access to the general state of oppression. For a moment the world's eyes were on the island and the prospect of a free Cuba seemed to be within grasp. But as humans tend to do, they quickly lose interest and turn their gazes to other matters and distractions. The Cuban dictatorship became more brazen in their oppression of the Cuban people, especially of those who embarrassed them on the world stage. To help us to put names and faces on just a few of those who as I write this are enduring prison, beatings and worse, is Vicky Collado. Vicky wears many hats but one of them she wears is while trying to get the true condition of Cubans out to the worlds ears. Co-Founders of the Abre Caminos Collective, Victoria Collado and Vanessa Garcia join us today for a great conversation. As our old country of Cuba continues to hurt, new voices continue to speak louder from abroad. This is a topic that is very close to our hearts. As Cubans, we have been marked by the pain and trauma that accompanies surviving communism and seeking refuge in the land of the free. And yet, after 62 years, the people of Cuba still struggle to experience the most basic of human rights. All while the world watches and even praises due to lies and deception. It has been an honor to discuss the need our people have for basic rights like freedom, independence and autonomy with the ladies behind the Abre Caminos Collective. Cuba deserves a future filled with freedom and we must see it sooner rather than later. It is our hope to continue to amplify the voices of those affected by communist regimes and advocate for freedom. Vanessa and Vicky: Thank you for sharing your wisdom, motivation, tenacity and perseverance. May our next episode together be a celebration of Cuba's newly found freedom. Vanessa Garcia is a Miami-based novelist, playwright, journalist, and visual artist. Much of her work centers on her Cuban homeland, where her parents and grandparents were born. She is the author of incredible essays you can find all over the web and an immersive theater production called The Amparo Experience. She is the dreamer and 3D printer of so many incredible projects. Shade Mountain Press saw the beauty in Garcia's 2015 novel, White Light, which interrogates one of Garcia's obsessions, color. What if this character was a color? What would it mean if a chapter is cardinal red? We talk about the inspiration for that novel, as well as her most recent project, a radio play called Ich Bin Ein Berliner. This autobiographical story details her reaction to the fall of the Berlin wall and its rippling effect throughout Cuba. We explode the myth of the solitary writer and the rewards inherent in creating art in a collaborative fabric of creatives. The Amparo Experience is an immersive theater experience bringing us the story of the Arrechabala family; a story of “one family's fight for love, country, legacy and the truth behind the real HAVANA CLUB RUM”. We sat down with Writer Vanessa Garcia and Producer Victoria Collado to talk about this moving experience resonating across cultures and with Cuban-Americans who find in it their own stories. Marcos, Raquel and Nelda also sit down to talk about what the experience meant for them providing a generational perspective. This is a true story from the Exiled South; of legacy lost and recovered. Don't tell us we're not Cuban.

When we think of what a food system is, we tend to think of it as a static structure, rather than a complex system of people working at different levels, or the diversity of communities working towards sustaining foodways. This week, we’re discussing how to create more diverse and equitable food systems in America with Vanessa Garcia Polanco. Vanessa is a current graduate student in Community Sustainability at Michigan State University, and an immigrant from the Dominican Republic. She is an alumna of the Food Solutions New England Network Leadership Institute and the University of Rhode Island. As a member of Food Solutions New England and the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, Vanessa has served at the local, state, and regional levels to promote democratic empowerment, racial equity, and visibility of immigrants in food systems. She worked as a chair for communications and outreach at the Rhode Island Food Policy Council and as a program assistant at the URI Cooperative Extension. In our discussion, we explore the idea of what a food system is and the limitations of the term, the ways in which language and actions in food studies can disempower or disenfranchise people of colour and immigrants’ agency, and how Vanessa challenges these ideas with her own research and writing. I first came across her work on Twitter through a hashtag she started called #FoodJusticeFridays and was struck by her activism and perspectives on the food system, so I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to talk with her – as I’m sure she’s going to be out changing food policy and economics one day not so far from now! I am very excited to be broadcasting live at the U R Our Hope Gala. This is their annual fundraiser celebrating all those who have worked hard to help families and individuals with rare and undiagnosed illnesess. This event is being held at Russell's Bistro in Austin, Texas. I will be speaking with board members, parents and supporters of this great organization. I know Mary Elizabeth Parker, Vanessa Garcia and many others will be stopping by to speak with me to give updates on any breakthroughs or NIH news. We will have a link and phone number to donate at that time. What I love about this organization is the dedication and committment of all the members and the families that receive the care. This is going to be fun. Don't miss it!
