A Seattle-based playwright, photographer and novelist, https://www.davidtuckerphotography.com/ (David A. Tucker II) has had several of his plays produced and/or developed at theaters across the nation, including Seattle Repertory Theatre, Abingdon Theater Co., ACT, Tacoma Actors Guild, and Foothill Theater Co. His theatrical works include The Nude, Persistence of Vision, Another Day in Baghdad (about his military experiences in Iraq), Under the Skin and North Wind Blowin', a play with music.  David received 2016 GAP funding for Smoke, a project where he interviews, photographs and videotapes members of Ebola burial teams as well as medical personnel who combatted the disease, an Ebola survivor, and staff on the Dead Body Management Teams in Liberia. His intent is to capture this challenging time in West African history by creating a theatrical work that weaves not only dialogue based upon these interviews, but also black and white photographs and video footage of the Liberian people and the locations in which these events took place. David has also been creating fine art and documentary photographs since 1980. His photographic series, The Human Landscape, explores the human figure in studio and natural environments. In 1995 he began DANCEWORKS, collaborating with ballet and modern dancers to capture the transitory beauty of dancers in motion. He continues to explore and add new images to each photographic series. The images in DEPLOYED: Haiti, Kosovo, Iraq were taken from 1994 - 2004 while a member of the U.S. Army. Tucker has exhibited and sold his photographs at a number of galleries and museums throughout the nation, including the Springfield Art Museum, Blue Sky Gallery, Photographic Center NW, M.I.A. Gallery, New York Center for Photography, Lightbox Photography Gallery, the DeMatteis Gallery, Silver Image Gallery, PhotoZone Gallery, Lumina Gallery and Photography West Gallery. His works may be found in several private collections. As both a fine art and journalism photographer, his images have been published in numerous publications including Black & White Magazine, The San Diego Union-Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The Orange County Register, The Seattle Times, American Theatre Magazine, Dramatics Magazine, InTheatre Magazine, and the book, "Theater in America."

Join me for this special bonus episode as I speak with playwright, Aleshea Harris. Harris' new play, On Sugarland, is in performances at the New York Theatre Workshop until March 13th, 2022. I had the pleasure of speaking with Harris about her career as a playwright and how her passion for telling stories about black people shines through all of her work. Aleshea Harris' play Is God Is (directed by Taibi Magar at Soho Rep.) won the 2016 Relentless Award, an Obie Award for playwriting in 2017, the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award in 2019, was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and made The Kilroys' List of “the most recommended un and underproduced plays by trans and female authors of color” for 2017. What to Send Up When It Goes Down (directed by Whitney White, produced by The Movement Theatre Company), a play-pageant-ritual response to anti-Blackness, had its critically-acclaimed NYC premiere in 2018, was featured in the April 2019 issue of American Theatre Magazine and was nominated for a Drama Desk award. Harris was awarded a Samuel French Next Step Award in 2019, the Windham-Campbell Literary Prize and the Steinberg Playwriting Award in 2020 and the Hermitage Greenfield Prize in 2021. She has performed her own work at the St. Mary's College, Edinburgh and Orlando Fringe Festivals, REDCAT and as part of La Fête du Livre at La Comèdie de Saint-Étienne. Why We Theater
INTERSTATE and Authentic Trans, Queer, and Asian-American Representation

Why We Theater

Representation is the buzzword of the day. But mere presence means nothing if it isn't accurate and genuine. Authentic representation in storytelling benefits not only members of historically excluded groups like Asian-Americans and trans people but members of every group, including the dominant culture. As of 2019, 69.1 percent of all film roles were white. How do we achieve a greater variety of stories, roles, and jobs in theatre, movies, and television? How do we ensure these stories and parts are written “authentically”? How do we get producers to greenlight projects? Interstate, a new musical by Kit Yan and Melissa Li, follows two Asian-American artists (one a lesbian and one a trans man) as they embark on a U.S. tour with their band Queer Malady. Meanwhile, trans teen Henry discovers QM's music and finds his story in theirs. Kit & Melissa join host Ruthie Fierberg and experts Sheena Brevig of the Center for Scholars and Storytellers and AC Dumlao of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund for this discussion about the importance and impact of authentic representation and how we can push for parity. Hear songs from INTERSTATE here. “The power of theatre to transform and shock potential is so huge.” Nina Meehan Theatre has long been perceived to be a powerful tool that spurs conversations as well an avenue in which societal matters can be explored and understood. Nina Meehan has been in the arts space for quite a while and says that theatre helps people to view the world differently and deepens their self-awareness. Nina Meehan is an award-winning director, playwright and producer, and a dedicated arts educator, with expertise in youth development and non-profit management. Her work focuses on nurturing innovation in children and connecting people in our increasingly digital world. Nina's award-winning theatrical work for young people as CEO of Bay Area Children's Theatre has reached more than 1 million kids and adults and has toured nationally and internationally. Some of Nina's most recent credits include: the adaptation of Chelsea Clinton's book, "She Persisted," Grace Lin's "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon," and the New York Times bestselling "Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site" series. She has received the Alumna of the Year Award from Head-Royce School in (2020), the Diablo Valley Innovation Award (2020), the Theatre Bay Area Award Best Director and Best New Musical (Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, 2018). She was an invited speaker at Visioni in Bologna, Italy, and an invited speak at a conference hosted by the National Endowment for the Arts. Nina also serves as Board President for TYA/USA and was named as one of Red Tricycle's “Moms Who Rock.” She holds a BS in theatre from Northwestern University and a Master's of Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco. She is also a certified yoga instructor. Her work has been spotlighted in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, American Theatre Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, Barron's, Red Tricycle, ABC News, NBC News, and CBS News. Nina is our guest today and, in this episode, she will talk about the transformative power of theatre to both children and adults.   Listen in! Social Media www.facebook.com/ninameehan     https://www.instagram.com/nmeehan/ instagram.com/bactheatre    https://www.instagram.com/bactheatre   https://www.facebook.com/bakctheatre    I am the founder of Bay Area children's theatre which me and my friends started 18 years ago and we have produced enough shows to reach literally a million people. [2:58] The part that I think is the most exciting for me is the growth from where we started to now having professional adult actors for family and student audiences and also working with young people. [3:35] The growth of the organization has truly been because of the demand from the community. [4:07] What I have learned over those years as a theatre creator is that art and creativity bring all the soft skills into our world. [4:26] Kids in a lot of ways are far more willing to take that risk of getting up there on stage than adults. [6:40] The power of what it looks like to see a kid stand up and own their art, reflects self-confidence and independence which are skills that children need. [7:35] We did online theatre during the pandemic and interestingly, the same transformative moments were experienced, where participants owned and took charge of their performances. [7:52] The power of theatre to transform and shock potential is so hug [8:10] What I've seen with the adults that we engage with that is interesting, is the conversation that their children's performances initiate afterwards. [8:15] As adults we are often putting limitations on ourselves with the excuse that we are not artists yet maybe we are. [12:27] I have loved working with kids for 18 years and it's been so beautiful seeing adults try to take the step to be creative. [12:55] The more that we can open that potential and that opportunity to redefine what it is to be a creative in our current modern world the more we can be creative and express ourselves. [13:50] We are programmed to be creative beings and that comes in lots of different shapes and forms. [16:26] Encouraging the people around us is important because that is our power, considering so much of being creative is about just allowing ourselves the permission to do it. [18:22] The more that we can say how we feel and appreciate art, the more we can have moments where we can value the creativity in the people around us. [18:52] Commercial break. [20:25] In terms of giving back to your community, I think it is so important to look around and see who in your community is doing work that is inspiring the next generation to become creative leaders. [22:43] We all want empathetic humans taking over from us in the next generation. [ We are all working on a shoestring but there is a whole world of non-profit organizations out there that would love to have support in different ways. [23:45] The other part of it is really looking into your own being and finding your own creative moments that brings you joy, and bring that into your adult world. [24:23] For entrepreneurs, for those who run businesses, board service for non-profit organizations is an insanely huge and powerful gift you can give back to your community. [26:23] The way non-profit sector is set up, we cannot function without a dedicated arm that is our board of directors. [26:44] Find time today to try creative play and just see what happens. A Paris Love Story is the latest play available for streaming and has a semi-biographical narrative, in which he plays Debussy looking at Hershey's life. Earlier this week, I talked to Hershey about the play, what the music of Debussy means to him, the creative process behind his plays and adapting them for the camera. To purchase A Paris Love Story and the other films in Hershey's "Live From Florence" series, go to https://www.hersheyfelder.net. Named to Time Magazine’s 2016 Top 10 Plays and Musicals, Hershey Felder has played over 6,000 performances of his self-created solo productions at some of the world’s most prestigious theatres and has broken box office records consistently. American Theatre Magazine has said, “Hershey Felder is in a category all his own.” His shows include: George Gershwin Alone (Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre, West End’s Duchess Theatre); Monsieur Chopin; Beethoven; Maestro (Leonard Bernstein); Franz Liszt in Musik, Lincoln: An American Story, Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, Our Great Tchaikovsky, and A Paris Love Story. His compositions and recordings include Aliyah, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra; Fairytale, a musical; Les Anges de Paris, Suite for Violin and Piano; Song Settings; Saltimbanques for Piano and Orchestra; Etudes Thematiques for Piano; and An American Story for Actor and Orchestra. Hershey is the adaptor, director and designer for the internationally performed play-with-music The Pianist of Willesden Lane with Steinway artist Mona Golabek; producer and designer for the musical Louis and Keely: ‘Live’ at the Sahara, directed by Taylor Hackford; and writer and director for Flying Solo, featuring opera legend Nathan Gunn. Upcoming projects include Anna and Sergei, a new play featuring the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff; as well as a new musical based on the award-winning book Out on a Ledge by Eva Libitzky. Hershey has operated a full-service production company since 2001. He has been a scholar-in-residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music and is married to Kim Campbell, the first female Prime Minister of Canada. Interview with Hershey recorded 24th November 2020; podcast released 26th November 2020. Music used in the podcast: Music by audionautix.com. Brian James Polak is a playwright, teacher, and host of American Theatre Magazine's podcast The Subtext. I've known Brian on social media for several years, but I'd never sat down for a conversation with him in person (or at least in this case, over the phone). So as one podcaster to another, in this episode I interview him about, well, interviewing, and how he creates his signature show. We also discuss what success means to him, how an ill-fated major in Philosophy led him to theater, and how to navigate the tension between wanting to promote other artists while still developing one's own career. Like many playwrights, Brian also had a production, Welcome to Keene, NH, cancelled due to COVID-19, so he gives us an update on that (hopefully still upcoming!) play and what else he's been working on during the pandemic. As an homage to Brian's monologues at the start of each episode of The Subtext, this episode also begins with some reflections from me on success, and the interview starts at 11:00. She has spent most of her adult life engaged in some form of theatrical pursuit. Whether that was exploring the relationship between religion and drama during her time at Christian Theological Seminary, performing with a small theatrical group in Pennsylvania, or writing plays for special audiences, Hassan says that she has always looked for the ways in which theatre speaks about the human condition. Hassan is now retired from teaching but still works as a freelance director. In 2017, Hassan directed Sonorous Road’s production of Straight, White, Men.' How the #MeToo Movement Has Impacted the Performing Arts

September has become the #MeToo movement’s defining month. Bill Cosby recently received a sentence of 3 to 10 years in prison for the drugging and sexual assault of Andrea Constand. And as I write this, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her allegations of sexual misconduct and attempted rape against the Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Under intense public scrutiny, survivors of sexual assault are often asked to revisit painful, traumatic memories with crystal clear recollection and foolproof evidence about a violent act that, by its very nature, is manipulative and deceitful. As in Congress, so too in the arts: the scales of justice are weighed against survivors of sexual assault. That’s why American Theatre magazine’s thorough investigation of sexual assault allegations in the performing arts is so important. In a field where intense recreations of violence and intimacy are often part of the job description, victims of sexual misconduct are often disregarded or otherwise face effective banishment from the theater community’s predominantly male-run list of organizations. American Theatre’s entire September issue is devoted to investigating the #MeToo movement in the performing arts. Below is a recording of my conversation with the magazine’s senior editor, Diep Tran, wherein we discuss the major allegations facing major regional theaters in Houston, Minneapolis, New Haven, and beyond. A special thanks to Miserable Chillers & Sun Kin for the music to this week’s episode, which features their latest album, Adoration Room.
