There are these two big landfills up in north St. Louis. One is called the West Lake Landfill, and it is packed full of radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project. There's hosing and tarps covering these huge sections of fields. It looks like a weird golf course from overhead, or a kind of sore in the land. It deserves to look this way because this nuclear waste site is the end product of a dozen botched techniques for nuclear disposal. How did this radioactive waste wind up in the landfill? Why does the answer involve “men of the Veiled Prophet's court?” Why did the government ignore the health impacts of the site until long after concerned moms started organizing on Facebook? Can our minds even grasp the scale of our destruction of Earth, or are all of these events the byproduct of “hyperobjects” that defy comprehension by limited mortals? Journalist Devin O' Shea brings us a sad and spooky saga of radioactivity in Missouri. This past Thursday, producer Danny Wicentowski joined our show to discuss how VP St. Louis has ousted the central figure and namesake of the secret society that runs St. Louis' Fourth of July Parade — the Veiled Prophet. This episode of STLPR's podcast “We Live Here” takes a deep dive on the history of the Veiled Prophet and explores how it's connected to the Ferguson uprising.
The Veiled Prophet is gone. According to VP St. Louis, the central figure and namesake of the secret society that runs St. Louis' Fourth of July parade “is no longer part” of the group that once bore his name. In a rare public interview, VP St. Louis Chief Operating Officer Michael Ruwitch said the decision to remove the Veiled Prophet was made “for reasons.” He insisted that “VP is just letters.” St. Louis on the Air producer Danny Wicentowski unpacks the news, and what it means for the 146-year-old club.
[originally published on Patreon Jul 28, 2023] I'm rejoined by Monty (@MontyBaby7) to finish our conversation about the Jesters (and many more things) relating to the Gosch and Franklin cases. We start with a high-level overview of the timeline of the Gosch and Franklin cases. Then I examined Alan Baer's family history, which is to say, the Brandeis family, who made their fortune through the Brandeis department store. That led us to examine patterns of immigration to Nebraska including Czech Jews which included practicing Frankists. We revisit the Frankists and discuss US Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. Note: as of the recording, I had not read The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk, but since the recording I have read it. (Monty wanted to add a clarifying note because he felt he may have been unclear or incorrect in discussing the Sabbateans and Frankists: "Sabbateans were in fact Sephardic, while the Frankists seem to be mostly Ashkanazi but some Sephardic as well." After that, we explore the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, Omaha's secret society. The Knights are very similar to the Veiled Prophet Ball of St. Louis as well as Mardi Gras Krewes. By all accounts, the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben "aspired to weld together the business and professional men of the city of Omaha and surrounding area into a compact secret society" and appear to have done so successfully.fter that, we explore the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, Omaha's secret society. Devin Thomas O'Shea – The Veiled ProphetEd is joined by Devin Thomas O'Shea who has researched into the customs and traditions which have continued – together with some of their more unsavoury beliefs, post the American Civil War.From WikipediaThe parade and ball were organized and funded by the Veiled Prophet Organization, an all-male, secret society founded in 1878 by prominent St. Louisans. The organization chooses one member to be a Veiled Prophet who conducts meetings and oversees activities but not necessarily for one year, spokesman Allyn Glaub said in 1991. They were a highly select group culled from the area's business, civic and governmental leaders, "the people who run St. Louis and St. Louis County." At that time the organization was racially mixed.Historian Thomas Spencer believes that the event generally revealed rather than soothed class conflicts.Spencer wrote that the VP parade was created in part to displace the parades regularly held by the trade unions. Spencer believed it cast workingmen in a passive rather than active role, not merely in the celebration, but in the mythology asserted for the history and economic life of the city.[citation needed] Occasionally the unions would stage events intended to mock the pretensions of the VP Ball. The leading socialist and working-class newspaper, St. Louis Labor, "wrote negatively" about the VP event and its organizers between the early 1900s and 1930.The ball, which most recently took place on the Friday before Christmas each year, was attended by thousands, but was protested by Black Lives Matter supporters, as well as the St. Louis-based group Missourians Organized for Reform and Empowerment, which linked St. Louis's wealthiest one percent to the VP organization.Devin's research is both deep and intricate, involving descriptions of the labor movements in the US, the Klan and other events many of which have remained, until now, shrouded in history.Twitter Devin O'Shea Website Devin O'SheaThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
he Veiled Prophet Ball is a debutante ball held each December in St. Louis, Missouri, by the Veiled Prophet Organization, founded by prominent St. Louisans in 1878.Each year, one member of the Veiled Prophet Organization is chosen to serve as the "Veiled Prophet of Khorassan," to preside over the Veiled Prophets Ball and its roughly 2,000 attendees.[1] The event's focus is on the 50-plus debutantes who are walked down the aisle by notable St. Louis businessmen, usually a friend of their father's, to bow before the Veiled Prophet. Five are chosen by the Veiled Prophet to be the Special Maids of Honor of the "Veiled Prophet's Court of Honor", and one is crowned the "Queen of Love and Beauty". [2]Fashion sketch by artist-reporter Marguerite Martyn of women attending the St. Louis Veiled Prophet Ball, 1911Inspired by Mystic Krewe, the founders aimed to create an annual local celebration similar to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, eventually to include pageantry and costuming as well as a parade with floats. The parade and ball were both originally held in October. The ball was eventually moved to the Friday before Christmas; the parade and fair celebration, once called the VP (Veiled Prophet) Fair and VP Parade, are now called Fair St. Louis and America's Birthday Parade and are held during the week of Independence Day.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
One of the most audacious protests in St. Louis history is the inspiration behind a new play chronicling the efforts of the activist group ACTION — which in 1972 sent members to infiltrate the Veiled Prophet ball. That operation, which dramatically unveiled that year's Veiled Prophet, is among the subjects of the play “Action,” opening November 11. Director Kathryn Bentley and actor Miles Brenton discuss bringing the dramatic true stories of “Action” to life.

The Ku Klux Klan, debutantes, Monsanto Chemical and an orientalist poem about a veiled villain. Let's take a look at the creepy "veiled prophet" cult based in Saint Louis, Missouri. It's a men's club of rich and powerful locals dedicated to crushing labor movements and parading their daughters in front of each other. Ellie Kemper (Erin from NBC sitcom The Office) was crowned their "Queen of Love and Beauty" in 1999. But activists played a role in revealing their racist past. You've probably never heard of the Veiled Prophet Ball. Ellie Kemper definitely wishes she hadn't at this point. The gist - it's a twisted southern debutante/racist rich white person party that started in the late 1800s. Kemper was crowned the ball's Veiled Prophet Queen of Love and Beauty in 1999. After photos surfaced recently, Kemper apologized for her involvement. We're not really throwing shade on Kemper so much as we are the ball itself and the white lady involvement from the beginning. What do you get when you put a clown in a KKK outfit? The Veiled Prophet. Stuff of nightmares.
Kathleen opens the show drinking Banff Springs Tunnel 30 Anniversary Lager from Grizzly Paw Brewing Company in Banff, Alberta (one of Kathleen's favorite places to visit.)UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: In an update on her Queens, Kathleen reports the latest bombshell that Lindsey Buckingham's latest wife has filed for divorce, which makes her ask Cardboard Stevie what her thoughts are on the developments. Kathleen tells Paddles that she doesn't think that any of the Queens in her Court would put up with Lindsey's bullsh!t, so anticipates that he will remain single for a while. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Frank's Red Hot Goldfish, which she can't wait to trick her nieces and nephew with the heat. She LOVES her next tasting sauce: Ortega Taco Ranch Taco Sauce, which she vows to take with her to eat Mexican food with her friends Mark and Nicole after the Pubcast is finished. She finishes off this week's tasting menu with Chewy Chips Ahoy with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, in which she's overcome with the sweetness and vows to give to her mom. She wraps her tasting segment discussing her recent day drinking shenanigans with her friends Raelyn and JB, and Raelyn asking their bartender “Do You Have Any Ranch?” to go with her well-timed fries after a few beers. BRITNEY SPEARS CONSERVATORSHIP DEVELOPMENTS: Kathleen is intrigued with the Britney Spears conservatorship drama, and UPDATES her Termites that Britney recently went on a bizarre rant on social media, referring to herself as a "motherf***ing snake" (referring to her iconic MTV Music Awards performance with a Burmese python). The 39-year-old wore a snakeskin bodysuit in her recent Instagram post, which comes as she prepares to speak out against her father, Jamie Spears, in court amid her conservatorship legal battle. Back in April 2021, Britney asked a judge to permanently end her father's control over her $60M fortune and personal life.JEFF BESOS SPACE AUCTION: As a follow-up to Ep44, Kathleen reads an article updating the progress of Jeff Besos's initial space flight aboard his New Shepard rocket. The richest man in the world is auctioned off a seat on its upcoming first crewed spaceflight in June 2021 for $28 million. The winning bidder will fly to the edge of space with the Amazon founder and his brother Mark on July 20th. Blue Origin advised that New Shepard's first passenger flight will carry four people, including both Bezos brothers, the auction winner and a fourth person to be announced later.INVASION OF THE SUPER TERMITES: All of Kathleen's Termites know that she has a fondness for all things “Termite,” and she laughs as she reads an article out of Israel advising of a “Super Termite” invasion in June 2021. This species has been coined as of the most destructive pests in the world, will eat anything containing cellulose, such as wood, paper, or cardboard, and has also been known to devour copper and lead sheets, plaster, asphalt foam insulation boards, plastics, and even underground power lines.THE AUCTION OF AN INVISIBLE SCULPTURE: Kathleen finishes her beer and laughs at the absurdity of an article detailing the recent auction of an invisible sculpture. Italian artist Salvatore Garau just sold an invisible sculpture for $18,000 USD and the work, titled Io Sono or "I Am," doesn't exist except in the artist's imagination. According to the artist, the sculpture doesn't not exist per se, rather it exists in a vacuum, Newsweek reports. "The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy," Garau explained. "And even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that 'nothing' has a weight. Therefore, it has an energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us." Ummmm, ok. Kathleen moves on to tell the termites her own story of “selling something invisible “ to her grade school nuns when she and her dad crafted an oversized vodka display bottle and an egg to demonstrate the power of vacuum energy. Yes Termites, Mama Termite attempted to demonstrate advanced science to nuns. MYSTERIOUS CANADIAN BRAIN DISEASE: Kathleen reads an article about a mysterious disease impacting a small area in Eastern Canada where 48 people have been struck with a baffling mix of symptoms including insomnia, impaired motor function, and hallucinations such as visions of the dead. Conspiracy theories blamed the illness on everything from cellphone towers to vaccine complications. These are some plots of a mystery that has stumped the medical establishment, attracted the attention of top neurologists, and scared residents of New Brunswick, a province of 770,000. In the past 6 years, dozens have fallen ill from the disease, and 6 people have died.ST LOUIS'S VEILED PROPHET BALL: Kathleen reads an article about St. Louis's Veiled Prophet ball, as it has been in the news lately when actress Ellie Kemper was discovered to have been named the ball's “Queen of Love and Beauty” when she was 19 years of age. Inspired by the Mardi Gras krewes of New Orleans and a character in a then-popular poem, the Veiled Prophet organization was established in response to major labor strikes that shut down the city — and the threat of Black and white workers uniting. The entire process of choosing the “queen” every summer was originally suffused with elaborate ritual: A person would be chosen by a secret board of local elites to anonymously play the role of the Veiled Prophet. The Veiled Prophet would choose a Queen of Love and Beauty from among the elite ball attendees (of course, invitation list to be kept strictly confidential as well) with whom he would dance a “Royal Quadrille” before presenting her with an expensive keepsake such as a tiara or pearls. Often these gifts were so expensive that they became family heirlooms. The ball would be accompanied by a just-as-spectacular parade and fair. In October of 1878, civic elites in St. Louis organized the first parade, which attracted more than 50,000 spectators. Kathleen provides her own commentary around attending the parade with her friends, which she says one of the highlights was that you could bring your own cooler of beer.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “Hacks” on HBO Max.

Hi friends, Grab your tea and let's get into it. We start off with a chit-chat and Maggie reads from a piece she contributed to for MTV titled No Pep Talks, Please: Young Melburnians React To Their Fourth Lockdown. After that we delve into the rumours that Harry Styles is starting his own beauty brand. Do celebrities need to make cosmetics? We then debate the news that Pamela Anderson objects to the new TV series about her infamous sex tape with Tommy Lee as well as discussing Grimes' strange TikTok rant about AI and communism. The Internet went into overdrive earlier in the week around the news that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actress was a “KKK Queen”. Jasmine references this newsletter by Charlie Warzel titled The Internet Is Flat and The Mystery of St. Louis's Veiled Prophet by Scott Beauchamp for The Atlantic while Maggie reads from How Twitter Turned Kimmy Schmidt Into a ‘KKK Queen' by EJ Dickson for Rolling Stone. Jasmine recommends season one of the comedy series Feel Good on Netflix and Maggie recommends the book Emotional Female by Yumiko Kadota. Ta-ta for now! Love Jas and Mags xoxo

Dynamics Of is a podcast about the "patterns and processes of change, growth or activity.” An arts and culture broadcast that speaks with people deeply embedded. People that are changing the world, even in granular ways. Hosted by Jake Leech. Devin O'Shea is a St. Louis based writer. His writing is in Current Affairs, Boulevard, CHEAP POP, The New Territory, Midwestern Gothic, and elsewhere. He went on NPR and the TrueAnon podcast to talk about his first novel—he is currently seeking representation and a publisher for Veiled Prophet. He joins Dynamics Of to discuss his upcoming piece for Current Affairs, profiling Rex Sinquefield, libertarian billionaire and chess obsessive whose trying to privatize St. Louis as we know it. We discuss how despite many failed attempts, the imminent threat of his wealth and vision continues to affect St. Louis and what the average person can do to fight it. Library Lunchtime Lecture by Professor Úna Hunt, Professor of Music Performance Research at the TU Dublin Conservatory. The fifth lecture in our series on 'Discovering Thomas Moore.' This lecture series accompanied our exhibition 'Discovering Thomas Moore: Ireland in nineteenth-century Europe'. Curated by musicologist Dr Sarah McCleave, School of Arts, English & Languages, QUB, the exhibition and lecture series exposes the breadth of Moore's research and writing about Ireland and explores Moore's role as an Irish writer with an international reputation in positioning Ireland within Europe through cultural exchange. It also addresses contemporary European fascination with the orient and Moore's influential role in depicting eastern culture, particularly via his hugely successful work, Lalla Rookh. Location: Academy House Date: Wednesday 20 November, 2019 Speaker: Una Hunt is Professor of Music Performance Research at the TU Dublin Conservatory and, as a prominent Moore scholar, has published widely on the subject. Her seminal book: ‘Sources and Style in Moore's Irish Melodies' is published by Routledge. Una also enjoys a flourishing career as an international pianist and curated a 38-venue national tour of Moore's Irish Melodies in 2008 and has since performed Moore in many prestigious international venues including Carnegie Hall, New York. Her discography of world-premiere CDs on Irish music includes the first ever complete archive of the Irish Melodies (6CD box set: My Gentle Harp, 2008) and a collection of the songs performed with a period instrument – Moore's Irish Melodies, the Square Piano Recordings (2009). She compiled the multi-media outputs for the exhibition first shown at the Royal Irish Academy: My Gentle Harp – Moore's Irish Melodies, 1808-2008, which was subsequently toured across Ireland and viewed by 100,000 people. Una is also an award-winning radio producer and presenter and has compiled numerous features for the BBC and RTE, including the 6-programme series: My Gentle Harp. She is presently collaborating with Wexford Festival Opera to mount a performance of The Veiled Prophet opera by Irish composer, Charles Villiers Stanford, based on Moore's oriental romance, Lalla Rookh. Several longstanding St. Louis traditions get underway this week, including Fair St. Louis and the VP Parade. Both events have connections to the Veiled Prophet Organization, which was founded in 1878 by white elites. The organization and its regular celebrations have been associated with civic pride and philanthropy – and at times with controversy, secretive rituals and protest. St. Louis Public Radio’s Shula Neuman looks back on Veiled Prophet history and considers the organization’s evolution and ongoing influence while talking with two guests: Percy Green, a prominent civil rights activist perhaps best known for scaling the Gateway Arch 55 years ago, and Devin Thomas O’Shea, a Chicago-based freelance writer who recently finished an as-yet-unpublished novel inspired by the city’s Veiled Prophet traditions.
